When I met my future wife's family, I soon learned that Jeanne was the guest of honour at every special event. Jeanne being one of many amazing creations from Jeanne's Bakery. Jeanne's to me embodies tradition, attention to detail, commitment to community, and pride in work hard and well done. Today I'm heading down to the bakery to buy a marble cake for my wife's birthday. Jeanne will be at our table tomorrow evening and help make the family celebration something special. I grew up with very different tastes than my wife and her family. Jeanne's cakes aren't MY favourite, but that doesn't take even one ounce away from how special they are to the people that matter in my life. My jaw is hitting the floor as I type, and I'm not sure whether to be appalled at the lack of reviews or thankful that I get the first one. Winnipeg is my second home, and the thing I love about it is this: they never tear anything down. Unlike Vancouver, where we bulldoze, repave, and redo almost constantly, there are legions of old businesses that have flourished in the very same spot they opened up in for decades, and many of my parent's old teenage hangouts and favourite spots still exist today. Jeanne's Bakery, well, it's a Winnipeg landmark. She first opened her doors in the 30's, and has been serving up cookie-bottom cakes that have been enjoyed by Winnipeggers, out-of-towners, and even celebrities and royalty (no joke, they've served J.Lo and the Queen!) for over 70 years. For me personally, Jeanne's has been a family tradition for my entire life, and the cakes have remained virtually unaltered since I was a kid. Always a sucker for the banana flavour, I requested my dad bring one back for me on his recent visit to the flatlands. What can I say about the cake? Delicious banana goodness, signature shortbread bottom, everything I love and remember. As long as they keep whipping them up, people will still be lining up for these cakes for birthdays, weddings, or just to haul back to Vancouver to scarf back in one sitting (not that I did that, or anything). A Winnipeg institution, for sure, and I hope to see this business continue to be successful for 70 years more.
