This area is grossly overhyped. The marketing people at the City are light years ahead of reality here. Walking around, I found many places closed in the middle of the day on a weekday. Mostly mediocre shops and a few places to get beer. I recommend finding something better to do with your time. read more

When I'm in the warmer southern climate, my man junk usually looks swollen, large, fully functional and all such things. However, it gets smaller and smaller the colder it gets, and when I get up near Scandinavia or Canada, it's "barely there" in the worst sort of way. This micropenis issue which worsens as I distance myself from the Equator, is called "Short North." But this isn't about my penis. Not completely, anyway. This is a neighbourhood of Columbus that is the heartbeat of the city. They have the amazing North Market here, and the convention center across the street where the Arnold is, and all the beautiful people with perfect hard bodies come (but not literally, or maybe that too) once a year. Then you have all the OSU students up and down High Street. So the heartbeat and livelihood of Columbus is all along this street, throughout this area, and it has such a long history. A must stop while in Columbus! We spoke to about 3 different locals about where to go in Columbus and each one said the Short North. Short North did not disappoint! Parking seemed pretty well marked - found a parking garage quickly and it was within walking distance of High Street. Came during the night and winter, but the streets were still very busy. Coming from Detroit and in comparison I felt safe walking around and being a fish out of water. A ton of shopping, unique restaurants, bars, and art galleries. I was not expecting the art galleries especially how late shops and galleries were open. It was about 7p and they were all still open. So nice to have a downtown area with shops and cool stuff to see late. Some eclectic shops along with corporate stores. Great place to walk around and take in what Columbus has to offer! read more

Avoid. The Short North no longer has that boho-artsy vibe. Don't misunderstand, all the nice hotels, restaurants, and shops still exist, but the city has allowed this area to regress into motorcycle racing, a smattering of late-night shootings, and generally lose the night out appeal it used to have. There are many reasons to want to go there and many more not to. There are places around town to spend the night out without dealing with so much stupid. read more

We go to Short North mainly for Entertainment and Dining purposes. Sometimes we shop in the area, as well. It should surprise no one that parking is often a problem, but nothing good comes without a little effort. We've never experienced the safety related issues that some folks relate, so I can't comment. By and large we never hesitate to take advantage of the venues and activities in the area...and we're in our 70's. Growing, dynamic cities have issues with issues. Meh read more

Fabulous transformation of High Street between downtown and OSU campus. In the '80s I shopped at the eclectic stores and furniture shops, and we did the Gallery Hop. Now, those buildings are gone and new taller buildings have retail and restaurant venues. I saw a few art galleries. We visited a few shops and enjoyed a few brews in the modern bars/beer gartens. Everything was very nice. The foresight that was, and is now accomplished, is great. The Short North is cool and fun. The neighborhood and clientele has definitely changed with only a few stragglers remaining. read more

The Short North is a fairly new edition to the city. Gentrification at its finest. A lot of Columbusites tell me how it used to be a pretty crime-heavy area. The Kroger near campus was a mess and you would never be caught dead walking around that area. It was scary. By the time I moved here, it was just an upscale, trendy area of town that OSU students and yuppies like to hang around. There's still lots of construction going on which makes the area noisy, dusty, and often traffic-y but it's something to show any out of town friend. There are chains on the street, Cincinnati-based restaurants, Cameron Mitchell restaurants, and other places. There are also lots of cute stores, bars, and coffee shops. It's still expensive. I don't hang around here much although I've been to Jeni's, Marcella's, Brassica, and Melt, to name a few. There are lots of bike racks and parking garages. A lot of people hate how hard it is to find parking here. You can find meters but it's all about timing and luck. Sometimes you can even park parallel for free on streets off of High. To be honest, the Short North is green. No parking lots encourages carpooling, biking, and taking the bus. Nice work, Columbus! I still think Short North is overhyped. It's fun and I enjoy it but there's more to this city than just hanging around here. There are some stellar food places here, but there's a heckuva lot more amazing places that aren't in the Short North. It's cool though. Lots of murals to see and I love that if you get off High Street, you still see lots of greenery. read more

Ohhh, the Short North is such a magical place. It's been amazing watching it grow and change over the past decade or so. I used to dream of living here and now that I do, it's remarkable and surprises me every day. What do I love about it? Well honestly, where do I start? One of the most enjoyable characteristics of the neighborhood is that you can walk through the entire thing, start to finish, in an hour or so. There's beautiful murals on the buildings, lovely parks (Goodale Park) to enjoy, and when you throw in the awesome businesses scattered throughout, you've got a wonderful way to spend the day! The businesses around here range from restaurants, dive bars, cocktail lounges, and ice cream shops to cool, locally owned retail spots like The Candle Lab, Clothe Ohio, Tiger Tree etc. You can even find salons, co-working, art studios, and more. Now, I consider myself to be a pretty reasonable person so I'll be honest about the few downfalls of this neighborhood. Yes - the parking sucks. The city is working on it, adding parking garages, additional street spots and whatnot but it isn't fun to deal with. I live in the area so it's completely walkable for me. If you're coming from another area of town, that's not the case and I recommend you uber/lyft if you can. Secondly, there's a lot of construction going on at the moment... and by moment, I mean the past year plus and the plan is to continue for a while. This really just means traffic congestion, a lack of sidewalks, and loud noises from time to time. It doesn't bother me much but it can be annoying. The final con comes along with a growing city in a popular neighborhood... panhandlers. Don't worry though, they are no where close to as bad as larger cities like Chicago and San Fran. All in all, I love bringing people to this area of town. In the summer its lively, there's awesome parades that travel through High St. and the tourists aren't too abundant. On the flip side, the winter is beautiful with holiday lights everywhere and cheery shoppers bouncing around. Where do I recommend if you only have one day in the Short North? Northstar Café or Phlico for breakfast, Jeni's Ice Cream for a mid-afternoon treat, Two Truths for a night cap, and Paulie Gee's Pizza for dinner. If you wanna be a true Columbusite definitely grab a script Ohio shirt from Homage and take a photo in front of the mural on the corner of High and Lincoln st. Have fun and enjoy! read more

This is a walk-able neighborhood with shops and restaurants along High Street. Some gems can be found on the side streets. Parking can be somewhat hard to find. There are parking garages, side streets (be careful to watch the signs so you don't get towed or ticketed), and the occasional parking lot. The area gets dressed up for the holidays with lights and decorations and there are public art pieces throughout the year. The pedal beer wagon looks like it's fun. Rain, sleet, or snow, there's the Gallery Hop the first Saturday of each month. Art galleries and shops with earlier hours will stay open late. read more

About 2 1/2 years ago, I can say that I never really ever went to the Short North. Then some friends took me to Standard Hall. This became a popular destination for me for the coming years. Since then the Short has grown and blossomed into one of Columbus's highlights. There is always something new There are so many options for food here. My fav place to eat there is Brassica. But there are other good places people should try. Notably for me: The Eagle, Forno, Macellas, The Pearl and many more. But every place offers something different. If you need things to do there is endless amount of possibilities. You can go hang out at places like Standard or Pint House. Maybe wine tasting at Tastings. There are gyms, shopping, art galleries, just anything you could want, you can find it here. You can plan a whole day around the Short North and have yourself a personal adventure. Another one of my fav things about the Short is the night life. Short has taken the mantel from Park Street as the go to place for nightlife in Columbus. You will find any vibe you want here. Calm, Energetic, that local bar feel, laid back and chill. That's why I believe it has taken over. Whatever people want they come here and find it and enjoy their night out. There is not much negative things I can really say about the short north. But If I had to pick, parking would be number 1. Sometimes it is virtually impossible to get parking there. There are a lot of parking garages, but you don't really want to pay those high prices for parking. Sometimes when I come I just Uber. Sometimes that ends up being less than paying for parking for me. Overall the Short North is quite amazing. There really isn't another place like it in Columbus. It's visually appealing and has anything you could need or want. It's also still growing with is another plus. So it's only up from here. If you have never been I would seriously recommend making a visit up there and try some restaurants or bars, look at the art on the buildings, shopping or whatever. read more

Hai Poke is one of the fun pop ups in Short North nestled between tons of small restaurants & bars. If you are ever looking for somewhere in Columbus to be a local tourist, then this place is gold. It's the epitome of Columbus Cool. It's a real urban neighborhood nestled between downtown and the OSU campus. A seedy and unsafe area back in the day, this neighborhood has made a complete turn around. I remember when the Short North looked like Livingston Avenue. This part of High Street was a nasty part of town. It was not the place for decent people to be in day or night. It was home to the poor, the derelicts, prostitutes and people up to no good hanging around. But times have changed. Drawn in by the potential of the area, low rents and proximity to the new convention center, The Short North started turning around. Gentrified and revitalized, now it's trendy, cool and expensive. Rents are rising but if you've got the money and you want walkable urban cool, you will have found your nirvana. Parking is a little tough but there's easy access to public transportation and you can easily walk the entire neighborhood. The area is ever changing so you may find your favorite is gone the next time you go there, but there's likely to be a new favorite in it's place. The dynamics of change are what are driving this area of Columbus. Makes for a great safe area to hang out in for a while. Its got some really great little shops, galleries, restaurants, bars and clubs. Be sure to check out the Gallery Hop held every first Saturday of the month. read more

The one place where I always go when in Columbus. Whether it be daytime or nighttime it is a great spot in this city to discover something new. Much like the South Side in Pittsburgh, the Short North is a vibrate place that has some of the best places to go. During the daytime you can eat, drink, and shop your way from one end to the other. Some of the best places to go are in this section of the city. I have easily spent a majority of my whole day milling around in the Short North. For people like me, that's ones from out of town, it's kind of a one stop destination. On the one end you have the Arena District and Downtown areas bordering and at the other you have the university area bordering. Then on both sides you have some excellent neighborhoods that a filled with their own little culture. Because of this, I always stay in or near the Short North. It's definitely a bustling place filled with opportunities to keep you busy. You just have to figure out what exactly you want to do with your day, and then just do it. read more

The good: I've lived in the Short North for a couple of years now, and there are a lot of things that I really love about the neighborhood. This is the first time I've actually had the chance to live in a walkable urban neighborhood, having been raised in Norcal suburbs and living in car-centric LA/Orange County for many years. Sometimes when the weather is fair and I'm working the day shift, I can go for days on end without using my car. There's the farmers market at the North Market on Saturdays, a 30 minute walk to OSU, an equally brief stroll to the Basement or the LC for a concert, Goodale Park, the Northside library, Northstar Cafe, Brothers Drake, Tokyo GoGo, coffeeshops and people-watching galore! The bad: Parking can be tricky on weekend if you don't have an assigned spot, and rent has been skyrocketing recently. Some of the newer renovations or constructions are charging upwards for $1000 for a one-bedroom (and I thought I had left California housing prices behind). In my most recent apartment hunt, I must have tried for a dozen viewings, and many times the places were rented overnight, or even sight unseen. It can get extremely noisy and crowded on Gallery Hop, with solicitors and panhandlers turning out in force. There is also a lot of construction noise with the many developments that are taking place. The Short North Arts District is one of Columbus' "gem attractions". This is a great place -- especially during Gallery Hop (1st Saturday of the month) to browse a number of art galleries and boutique stores. For my wife, the art galleries and boutiques are the main attraction. I go along for the food. There are so many great restaurants to try in the Short North (Mac's, Press Grill, Short North Tavern, Melt, Stack City Burger and too many others to name them all. There are also some hi-end restaurants like Hyde Park. The biggest challenge when visiting the Short North is finding parking. Recently, we've been parking in the parking garage affiliated with one of the hotels near the North Market. The new convention center garage - when it's completed - should help with the parking. The other option is to park closer to downtown and to ride the C-bus. The C-bus circulator runs a continuous loop thru the Brewery District, German Village and the Short North. C-bus also lets you park once and then move from one area to another without moving your car. Great place to visit. read more

This being the "downtown" in Clumbus that took a whole lot getting used to. The restaurants are alot of dive bars with a few exclusive food offerings mixed with alot of vintage. I am used to downtowns being full of your usual chain shops, and the same stuff in every corner like every other city. Not here, you can walk to North Market, one of the best on the planet, window shop while you stroll or eat from any ethnic food group you want. My most favourite part of Columbus. Such a favourite that I convince friends to drive the 2 hours up to Columbus every Gallery Hop where we eat way too much, drink way too much, and swear we'll never do it again . . . Until the next Gallery Hop rolls around. The complaints about parking are valid. Its limited and often expensive. But its worth it as you could spend the entire day here eating and drinking and shopping. And bee careful of resident-only permit streets around here - they can get ya. The new CBus circulator makes getting around the Short North super easy. And its free. Yeah. Free. So even if you don't HAVE to take it. Jump on, take a ride, and see how easy taking the bus can be. Especially in the Short North where having a car is optional. Its just way too east to bus, walk, or bike just about everywhere here. There are no shortage of restaurants of varying cuisines and the bars here range from classic cocktails to modern concoctions. There is really something for every taste. read more

A dynamic force that reinvigorates cities with exploding cultural significance, or a Trojan horse displacing the underserved in favor of the chaffing corporate state, I am of two minds about gentrification. And so I am of the Short North, an area that finds me loving and loathing, has me energized and exhausted, fills me with fantasies of--and frustrations for--the future. Named after police slang for the area just short of downtown, its boundaries are not well defined as planners, residents, and developers have there own geography. Columbusites usually defined it as the strip centered by High Street between Park/Front Streets on the west and Pearl Alley on the east. It starts at the 5th Avenue intersection and ends at I670, though The Cap, a development that hides the freeway, effectively extends it to Nationwide Blvd. You can identify it by the arches spanning High. These are facsimiles of historic ones that were put up to light Civil War vets on reunion in the late 19th century. Later they supported trolley cars and were placed throughout the city giving the nickname Arch City. Visitors will compare it to the likes of Carson Street in Pittsburgh or other art districts in cities throughout America. Full of fading bourgeois boutiques, specilty stores, gastropubs, furniture shops, hangouts, and fashion. Many of the top restaurants and pubs in town are here, too many to list off. A few off the top of my head is the meadry Brothers Drake, the chef designed Rossi, the irresistible Le Chocolaholic, and the brunch-tastic Tasi. A transplant, I found the area in the 1990s when the process was in its infancy. I loved the cacophony of architecture, the multistories close to the street, and even the grittiness of its urban culture. Gallory Hop, a tradition alive today, had the gallories open ever first Saturday of the month, was cutting edge and thick with creativity then. It once had the most bohemian coffee houses in town, though it still has great coffee spots. Gallory hop is still an event worth experiencing even if its former greatness is relagated to nostalgia. I still suggest vistors come here, though beloved spots have closed in the last 15. Sure the process brings blight to bright; but, if left unchecked, there is a point it can turn neighborhoods south again; sterile sameness has the same void of soul as distressed dilapidation, maybe even more so. Think of it as a yelp score on a graph, the Y-axes is the star ratings, the X is the level of gentrification. Gentrification makes a bell curve: we start out as one star-- then the artist moves in eventually bringing to three; later, indy restaurants and bars come and we reach 4; at some point, when the cool balance of art, new indy shops, and the old time biz is perfect we have primo neighborhood. But add a little more gentrification and suddenly rent increases, artist are praiced out, and it start to fall. Four-stars, three-stars. The unique local joints move out and close and we reach 2. All the usual chains, cloaked in posh trimings move in, and we have returned to a one star neighborhood which I derogatorily name 'Easton Downtown'. (A good mall yes, but a neighborhood, no.) Typical trendy urban downtown touristy kind of place. Lots of "cute" restaurants and shops with all the trendy iPhone type people walking around in their super fresh gear... while staring at their phones the entire time and everyone has headphones. Wait... I also had headphones in, but I was by myself and I have a Samsung. Almost made it to the cool kids table. I think this is a good "date night" place and something to show out of town friends. Probably going to be packed with college kids and tourists. And, as typical urban areas go, parking is complete crap. Good luck! Hope you like walking. Way back in the day (I think it was probably late 2003) I had my very first experience visiting Columbus, Ohio with friends. We had ventured down to the Short North for the monthly Gallery Hop. I remember falling in love with the funky vibe and gay friendly atmosphere. It was so different than the rest of the Midwest. It reminded me of the small neighborhood off Fillmore in San Francisco I had briefly lived in with my mom and brother. My barely 18-year-old self fell in love. It was a very different place then than it is now, but it is still equally magical. It's safer, cleaner, more alive than ever before. The city and the community have done so much to revitalize the area. I'm loving the new street art I see going up on the buildings. I dug the little Short North Pole theme they had for the holidays. The restaurants, bars, shops, they all come together to make it a really neat area to explore when you have time to kill. read more

Short North has shown me what Cincinnati's Gateway Quarter will be like in another five years. Like Short North, our Gateway Quarter was riddled with crime and known as a squatters' neighborhood before it began revitalization ten years ago. We've come a long way since then, with a portion resembling the artistic and local eateries found in Short North. But there are still several blocks that need improvement. Here's where a visit to Short North becomes inspiring. Having been in the same boat, but just working at it longer, Short North is at least three times as big as the rejuvenated Gateway Quarter. It's exciting to see vitality in the neighborhood, to see swarms of people out during Gallery Hop, and to see many local businesses opening up shop in this once desolate area. If you're coming to Columbus, this is definitely THE place to explore. Favorite stomping ground!

Hip, trendy, and teeming with youthful energy*, the Short North Arts District features many boutiques, bars, galleries, and eateries not at all found elsewhere. Lovely arches adorn this stretch of High Street. I especially love Marcella's Ristorante and Tigertree, and some rather elegant art galleries nestle among grittier or more provocative ones. The Short North is where little twenty-four-year-old me would rather spend her free time than the immediate periphery off the campus of Ohio State. Many stereotypically liberal-lookin' folks abound in the arts district, but *this* particularly strait-laced, moderate-to-conservative Democrat isn't complaining. Bring your out-of-town guests here; this is *the* "it" spot for all those who can (legally) drink. *Yes, I realize I'm far from the first person to describe the SN as such, but in using such clichés I merely affirm the inevitable truth that the Short North *is* what's happenin' in Columbus, Ohio. read more

The Short North, just for clarification, consists of High only; it's a shared corridor with Italian Village on the east side of High and Victorian Village on the west side, both with their own flavors once you leave High. The neighborhood is commonly regarded as both the city's best urban neighborhood and as a great example of urban revitalization, which in recent years has taken a gentrification slant with a good deal of expensive establishments moving in and changing the artsy character of the neighborhood. You know this is the case when numerous galleries during the last Gallery Hop didn't even bother to be open in the evening, so you can imagine my new San Franciscan roommate being confused since this wasn't the case just a few months ago. The Short North, for all its touted "vibrancy", is rather quiet outside of weekend evenings and could use just a bit more hustle and bustle. A little more focus on utilitarian goods (try buying some basic hardware here) vs. luxury goods would probably do the trick. There are still a decent number of places worth checking out for sure. Basically, the northern half of the neighborhood is less gentrified, but still healthy and retains the feel of what the southern half used to be like more or less. There are even some old standbys back from when this was the worst neighborhood in the city and by that I mean you would rather walk down Cleveland Ave at night in a heartbeat than walk down High in the Short North in broad daylight. The Short North was a sh!tstorm of all the worst things that could befall an urban neighborhood. Public transit was ripped out, businesses left the neighborhood, and residents followed them on the new shiny "free"ways out to the problem-free way of futuristic living: suburbia. The neighborhood became ground zero for undesirables like drug dealers, hustlers, muggers, etc and on top of that you had the projects plopped right here too, which was simply social experimentation imposed on vulnerable and low-income individuals who had to live in the same complexes with the aforementioned denizens, who I'm sure had no qualms about their subsidized housing. A former resident of Victorian Village who I spoke with recalled the time when he lived there back in the 80's and saw a guy get shot in the face on High, which matched the other horrible incidents I had read about like women being raped in Goodale Park and one elderly man being beaten within an inch of his life for what little money he had in his wallet. The transformation of the neighborhood has been so great that you wouldn't recognize old pictures of the area without a local landmark giving its location away. The present day Short North has been seeing rents go way up for businesses and residents alike. Columbus residents tend to brush it off and say that all of the creative types that lived there will just move in to another run-down business district and voila: the same process will occur like clockwork. Unfortunately, there is no large urban business district that is emerging to fill the void of the more alternative Short North. Columbus should, like numerous other cities between the coasts, have a variety of blossoming Short North-type business districts, which is a big reason why the neighborhood gets 4 stars, not 5. If you're going to be a city's one and only arts/dining/boutique district of any significant size, then you better live up to the hype and I'm just not convinced that the Short North makes up for all of the rest of the long empty urban business districts (eight) on every other major street branching out of Downtown. Even so, it has no rival coming anywhere close in its sister Ohio cities of Cleveland and Cincinnati. read more

I enjoy living in the Short North. It is central for my work - I'm always traveling the opposite direction of the morning rush hour! There are several things to do and see, within a two mile radius. Galleries, restaurants, sporting events, dancing, cultural events, etc. biking and walking is popular here - the OSU campus starts about half a mile above the Short North, thus when there's nice weather, people are always outside! There are a plethora of restaurants - American, Indian, Italian, German, sushi, Thai, fats food, pizza joints, gourmet street carts - you name it, I'm sure you can find it here. read more

This upper-midlevel (did I make that up?) neighborhood isn't for everyone. It's busy, noisy, and full of trendy, sometimes seemingly fly-by-night establishments. But I feel that lately there have been some new businesses that seem built-to-last. Bakersfield and Oddfellows comes to mind. But then there are other new establishments like The Pint House that make me roll my eyes. Of course there are the old standbys like Bernard's, Short North Tavern, Mac's, etc. Nothing wrong with these places. I could take them or leave them personally, but I know that the crowds that frequent them are generally good people. But I hate to see places like La Fogata, with it's world class terrible service and food, thrive. Went to the short north for a 21st birthday weekend getaway with my boyfriend. If you want a hot bed of constant night life, go here! Many of the bars and clubs are within walking distance from each other, too. We stayed at a hotel, then spent the next day checking out the shops and restaurants. Day or night, the short north is always lively. The only reason I didn't give five stars, is because hotel accommodations in this area are outrageously expensive, we stayed at a hotel probably 15 minutes away simply for that reason. read more

Loved Short North! Great mix of shops (vintage, art galleries, toy shops), most were reasonably priced. Good food options. Parking was a little hard to find but besides that it was a great experience! read more
