My wife and I booked a stay for a romantic weekend over the winter. The architecture and grounds were beautiful. We also reserved dinner which was an incredibly memorable, delicious meal. Breakfast was simple, not abundant but delicious. These were the positives. Overall, we were left disappointed - for the whopping price tag the service left much to be desired. Some examples: In advance of our stay, it was very difficult to get a hold of the staff by phone. Once there, we had to rush to our room to make a work call but afterward we never got an overview of the property/activities/offerings or how to enter the grounds after the spa closed or when check out was. Several times, we were halfheartedly asked if we needed our bags moved and just not engaged regarding how our stay was going because we would've given this feedback in real time. Every service, including hot tub access, came with a surcharge, which should've been folded in with the price. Additionally, our fire place was broken, our dinner time change/birthday gesture was nearly forgotten, and the hydrotherapy wasn't clean/lit for the one hour designated for communal use. Some shoutouts to the very nice esthetician who returned my jewelry left behind and the chef/Pilates instructor. If you're planning a stay, make sure to ensure you have a king room - some are queen/king, are equally priced and seem to be assigned arbitrarily. read more

This place was just incredible. For starters I was the only one there so truly felt like a king, which we all need to feel like sometimes, especially when the world and our lives are certainly not in the most optimal place. The room was pristine and very comfortable. The grounds and main building were peaceful. I very much enjoyed my massage and (though it's not really my thing) sacred sound journey. Early morning yoga and workout classes were lead by fun staff members who did things at my level and didn't try and do too much nor too little. The food was also a huge highlight. The rice bowls were delicious, breakfast was always an incredible treat (make sure to get the chia seed pudding, miso soup and silken tofu). A big jug of colorful, cold tea is served with each meal but do yourself a favor and get a warm cup of pink moon milk. It might be the nicest thing I've ever drunk in my entire life. The best bit though were the meals prepared by Chef Sabdiel Martinez. I will not soon forget the green matcha potatoes or the delicious fluke en papillote. The dessert being chocolate mousse, my favorite, was such a stroke of good fortune! I enjoyed chatting with all the staff about my experience and truly wish to return. This place is quite pricey, definitely not for your random getaway, but if you want to celebrate something you can't go wrong here! read more

The spa facility is beautiful and the sitting area has a beautiful view of the landscaping. The lockers and amenities were impeccable. Thankfully my husband had a wonderful massage with Nicole. She came out after his massage to further discuss stretches she recommended for his shoulder and it was evident she takes pride in her work and did a phenomenal job. So much so that my husband has rescheduled to see her this Monday. (2/19)Unfortunately my experience was quite different. My therapist took me in late but finished at 3:45 on the dot. As a massage therapist myself I was so disappointed. I was never asked what type of massage I wanted just if I had any issues she should know of. I had to ask for a massage I had seen on the menu before she walked out. I realized 10min into the massage the type of massage I chose was not to my liking(the hot compress was making me cold)so I just requested she massage me with out that part. The time she spent on me face up felt rushed and her strokes were short and abrupt. Quite stressful rather than relaxing. She did some footwork and didn't acknowledge my toes(we were taught to at least do compression to make it feel complete)please note I have nice feet :) It honestly felt like she didn't want to be there. The back work was okay but by then I was so disillusioned by the massage. I am totally aware people may have off days and this is her livelihood but for the price point we paid I could not justify it. I am truly happy my husband had a great experience because he really needed it. I would have loved to give the spa another chance and go with him on Monday but they only had ******* as the other therapist working. I sadly was not willing to give her another try after my experience. FOLLOW UP.... My husband showed up for his massage today and they said it wasn't booked. One of the ladies was rude AF. Told him they called me to make his appointment because they cant book them in person at their front desk. WHAT?!?!?? we were never told they would call to confirm the appointment that we MADE with the lady at the desk after our massages. When they called they said they heard I was interested in booking a massage. I said I was not interested since they only had my therapist available. They never mentioned my husbands appointment with Nicole. SPA 101 you always follow up and rebook clients after their massage. NOT check availability and then have someone else to book the appointment you made at the front desk. So asinine I am dumbfounded by this whole situation. It's really simple: if you pay $400 for a massage, it better be life changing. It's not. It's fine. The masseuses were very kind. The other staff was beyond rude. They were just downright pathetic. They really need to be trained, but the point is that the owner is a lawyer. She doesn't know anything about hospitality or has ever worked in the hospitality business, so how would she have the ability to train and manage people for an extremely high end spa? It's a common misconception with hospitality entrepreneurs. If you want to charge X price for a service or a meal, you need to provide Y output. She really needs to do some landscaping at the front of the property. It's loud everywhere. Something just didn't go right with the development portion. The whole property feels cramped. I felt like I was on top of everybody. One star for the masseuse and one star for the owners effort. It was a good idea in theory. Amazing. Relaxing, peaceful, energizing. I didn't know what to expect; however, they exceed even the highest of expectations that I could have had. You are welcomed to a spectacular facility, with every conceivable amenity. The common areas, rooms and spa are stunning. It is a peaceful and elegant environment. The daily program is thoughtfully crafted and totally flexible to meet my needs. The exercise classes are organized to accommodate any and all levels of strength and flexibility. I had two different spa treatments (massage) and they were fantastic. The entire staff is incredible. I can not say enough about how well they all work together and will go out of their way to ensure your comfort. Guests are treated as a part of the family (in a good way). And the food....sensational, creative (oh, and healthy too). Every meal was unique and really just spectacular. This is not a clinical, hotel/spa factory. It is a warm and peaceful escape with a dedicated and thoughtful staff that is enthusiastic about making sure you have an amazing experience. I will be back. read more

I have been to a lot of spas in my time and while I understood this was to be a more "tranquil experience" it was a bit too austere and unfriendly for my taste. There was one woman at the front who seemed annoyed that my friend and I were there. She was running to and fro and never seemed to smile at anyone or ask us how our day was or just anything. We went on a weekend and note if you are not staying at the hotel on the weekend you can't use the water circuit. The massage was very good and the masseur was very good-I loved the dry brush technique as part of the massage but I have had just as good of massages for half the price. The real star of Shou is Olga the facialist. I highly recommend asking for her. She was extremely friendly, and a true pro--probably the best facial I have ever had. All and all I would not go back at those prices. It is The Hamptons so I expense cost but I also expect friendly welcoming service and appreciation for the client. I felt like a bother and just one more person to seat, ask if they want a water and then never talk to me again. This place is a piece of heaven. As s workaholic I do not know how to relax and the serene atmosphere , no distractions, no kids, no TV's, everything organic made me totally relaxed. The spa services were phenomenal . I had a session with Amy Lynn and Megan ( sorry for misspelling) and they both Performed a very relaxing massage sessions. Highly recommend. Just booked another weekend retreat again. This please is a perfect couples get away for a weekend to simply restore and rejuvenate. You will not regret. It's a hidden gem. I had high hopes for this place. My girlfriend booked this place for a relaxing girls weekend. Was that too much to ask from Shou Sugi Ban? First, before we even arrived, it was impossible to get a hold of someone because they never answer their phones. We tried on multiple occasions, on multiple days. On the day of our appointment, we arrived late due to the unpredicted heavy traffic coming from the city. I missed an entire service. The front desk girl was not empathetic at all and could care less. She still charged me full for my missed appointment and didn't try to do anything about it. Then, once I changed, every service I got, they told me to wait in the waiting room until it was a few mins into my appointment time, then they came in and rushed me to my appointment. I did not feel relaxed and hated the feeling of being rushed from one place to another. As a result, the services started late and ended early for some reason. I barely felt like I went to a spa. And for the price I'm paying, I did not find this to match the quality of the service I received. If you are looking for a relaxing weekend, do NOT come to Shou Sugi Ban. read more

What a disappointment. The prices are exorbitant and the services amateurish. The reflexology treatment was a glorified foot massage that had nothing to do with reflexology; the cranial sacral (sic) practitioner did not touch the head of the client; the facial was primitive and the body massages ordinary. On the plus side, the place is beautiful and the food delicious and beautifully served. Many of the spa facilities were closed because of the pandemic so I do not know what the experience would be like when fully operating. Not worth the very high prices. read more

The spa is beautiful and located right next to the Parrish museum. The Hamptons definitely needed something like this. With that being said the half day spa package is overrated and extensive for what you get... I received a 60 minute massage treatment. It was just okay. I used the sauna, steam room and pools which are included in the package. Nothing spectacular to be honest. After I checked out the facilities it was time for my "tea tasting". There is a house dedicated for the teas but it was being used for a sound meditation so one of the girls at the front desk brewed some tea. Didn't seem like much of an experience :/ Overall the property is beautiful but I wouldn't run back to pretty much pay $350 for a 60 min massage - because that's really all you are getting. read more
