What was supposed to be a simple 7-day job, done by April 11, turned into a total nightmare. From Day 1, this company was a joke. Instead of doing the job they were paid for, they tried to upsell $6000 for roofs we didn't need -- even after we made it very clear we only wanted basic fixes for the city inspection. Before they even started, all plumbing passed inspection -- but somehow, on their first day, the outdoor spigot got "accidentally" broken. They tried blaming it on us when they broke it trying to use the hose. We argued, let it slide, and kept it moving just to get the job done. After every little half-done job, the owner was begging for money -- $100 here, $100 there -- always some excuse: "I can't pay my workers," "I need a babysitter," "I have to leave early." It was endless whining. He even screwed up the contract math and argued about that too, instead of owning his mistakes. Then came the front door fiasco. He called right off jump to complain about having to drill holes on the universal door. Five trips later, and many texts of bull shit excuses he couldn't hang a simple door properly. Screws falling out, door flopping around, and still no wind chain installed like promised. He blamed the frame. We told him flat out (and it's in text): if you find something wrong, tell us. A real contractor would fix it the right way. Instead, he just made more excuses. I finally had enough. I cussed him and his trash crew out. Then he sent me a text --saying my husband wanted him to "n-rig" the job (using the hard R). Yeah. Full-on racist. And dumb enough to put it in writing. If we wanted a half-assed job we wouldn't have complained and made him fix the crap job 5 times from the start . I'm beyond furious. And now, I'm making sure everyone in the community knows exactly what kind of business this is. If he'll lie, cheat, do garbage work, AND send racist messages -- he'll do it to anyone. Previous contractors have been less than thorough and fairly dismissive of the issue. However, I was pleasantly surprised by and incredibly pleased with the amount of work that J Williams did to locate and repair the leak. I'm now confident that the roof is fully repaired and the leak is no more. The workers kept me apprised of the process throughout, and afterwards even showed me pictures of the specifics steps taken to repair the roof. The process was lengthy, but everyone I spoke to at the company (the workers, the woman who scheduled the appointments, the owner... everyone) was pleasant and professional throughout. I did notice a negative review from a former employee, James, who actually worked in our home. While I normally wouldn't address something like this, I feel it's worth noting that our personal experience with him was far from positive, he often seemed unhappy and was quick to complain. It's no surprise to us that he's no longer with the company and is leaving poor reviews years later. Our experience with Whelan was difficult, frustrating and huge waste of our time and money. They lack integrity, transparency, communication and were extremely high priced. Their customer service is very poor, they do not listen to their customer and refused to provide detailed cost for our contract. We tried twice (2021 and 2025) to work with MJ Whelan for our home remodel which consisted of 3 additions: new first floor master suite, entertainment room with bathroom and front porch addition but ran into issues both times. We were unable to get to a signed contract. The first time in 2021, we provided prints but they came in with a price that was crazy high (thought maybe due to Covid) so we shopped around. We had some of the work done by another company then came back to Whelan (2025) to requote. After paying them $8400 for new "sketches" (not even CAD or construction prints) with minor changes to our original drawings, they actually tripled the price!! Unbelievable! We asked them to see what they could do to reduce the cost and all they did was take out content or lower product quality (windows, siding, cabinets, etc.). Ironically, the prices weren't reducing. It's like they played the shell game. They didn't listen or hear us. They did what they wanted. We would tell them what we wanted, then they'd come back with something different. And all this with no detailed costs to work with. We kept getting back total numbers and cost TBDs (cost to be determined)! We were so frustrated. We tried for 7 months only to end up with nothing. We decided to cut our losses $8400 and 7months and walked away. We thought, If it was this difficult to get a contract signed we didn't have any confidence or trust the building experience would be any better! Either MJWhelan got greedy due to covid or grew too fast and can't manage the business. Not sure, but we weren't willing to pay $500k-$1.4m without knowing exactly what we were paying for.

Of three bids I received, theirs was among the lowest. I talked directly to the owner, and I was pleased right off with his design ideas and knowledge about concrete. He was responsive to my questions and communications. Scheduling was easy: I had some other work being done on my house that wasn't done by our original scheduled day, so we had to reschedule once. When the work started, the crew was obviously very experienced and talented. I really enjoyed watching! They showed up on time and the owner came on-site a few times during the day. They consulted with me on some of the form setting to make sure I was pleased with it. Drainage is tricky on my property because the houses are very close together and the grade slopes upward toward the street, but they were careful with the leveling, and the water sheds nicely. The brush finish looks great. Stress lines and edging were all well done. They finished the entire project in a day, which was impressive, and came in a week to pull forms and cut another stress line. I'm very happy with the end result and would recommend Lacaria highly for any concrete work!
