For the last 4 years, Dr. Iwata has been my general doctor, and I couldn't be any happier! 5 stars for Dr. Iwata and his staff!!! If you're looking for a general doctor, you won't be disappointed! Dr. Iwata is the friendliest doctor I've ever had! He has a very gentle and caring personality, and friends of mine who has since switched to Dr. Iwata certainly agree! Unlike previous doctors I've had, Dr. Iwata takes his time to listen to my concerns. In addition, his advice and explanations are always detailed and thorough. Previous doctors I've had always seemed rushed when I went for my annual checkups, hoping to just get through the long line of patients in the waiting room. Definitely not the case with Dr. Iwata! Dr. Iwata's staff is also topnotch! The staff never fails to call me when it's time for my annual checkup, and they are very prompt when they send lab results and/or referrals. Speaking of bloodwork needed for checkups, one of Dr. Iwata's staff members is a dedicated nurse just for blood tests. No need to set up a separate appointment at a different office just for bloodwork! Yes, I still miss the Dr. Iwata's penthouse office on Colorado Boulevard, but I actually prefer the current Bellafontaine office since it's now so easy to park! There's cheap and reasonable underground parking available on Allesandro, one street south of Bellafontaine. The underground parking structure is located right across the street from the office building on Allesandro, and there's an entrance to the building on Allesandro. He was probably one of the worst doctors that I ever visited. He did not do complete physicals. Anything that actually involved touching me was not performed. He was also quite cold to me personally. You can't depend on him to give you an exam at all and catch a problem in time. He will only refer you to other doctors for your issue but that will take weeks and if it's a critical issue it will be missed and you will get sick and he won't apologize. If you're healthy, this doctor is for you. I was healthy. Five years I've been seeing Dr. Iwata. Five years of 5-minute physicals, of being chastised by the admin for running a few minutes late, of being given whatever available appointment times I did not pick. But I put up with it. Seeing a doctor is a necessary evil and the place is at a penthouse with built-in aquarium and Us Weekly's to my heart's content. Oh, and I've never had to wait long either- max five min (you'll see why.) The physical starts with fast-walking to the back to step on the scale, then get blood pressure, heart rate, etc. Then the nurse sits you in a room, takes your blood. This blood is gonna be sent to LabCorp outside of this office, and you'll get your results by mail ten days later. No doctor telling you your results. But I was healthy... who needs human interaction? One day, I picked up an incessant cough. It's been two weeks, I went and checked it out. He prescribed me antibiotics and cough drop with codine- just enough for 10 days. 10 days passed by and the cough was still there. I called back.. saying I need a follow up. Jessica, the easily-rattled-admin/m (it's like walking on egg shells with her), scheduled me. During my follow-up visit, Dr. Iwata said "well, this may be pneumonia, let's get x-ray." I obliged. Results came back, doc said "so your lungs are fine, but you seem to have something in your throat area." You see, the x-ray for my chest just so happened capture my throat. Before this, about a few months before, a "doctor" at a small weight-loss clinic caught this. She told me, I can't prescribe you diet pills until you get that checked out with your doctor. I don't trust pills and I didn't trust her - this second rate "doctor". I thought she was trying to sell me something. I never told anyone. Plus, if it was anything serious.. Dr. Iwata, a REAL doctor would've caught it right? Nope. That thing in my throat - cancer. Cancer. The ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor, the surgeon who took the biopsy, the nurses who touched my neck all said.. Wow, yeah.. that's really huge, it's obvious. My husband was pissed: "I'm really surprised.. how could your doctor not caught that?" How could Dr. Iwata not catch it? Five minute physicals.. that's why. When I saw the ENT doc the first time, before we knew it was cancer, he FAXED Dr. Iwata's office instructing him to refer me to an endocrinologist. No calls, no follow up. I heard NOTHING from Dr. Iwata's office. The ENT doctor told me it was cancer ten days after the biopsy. He said that he sent all these to Dr. Iwata's office AGAIN, I took the initiative the next day and I called Dr. Iwata's office myself and told them, "Dr. Iwata sent me to an ENT and I got a biopsy, and it turned out to be cancer. They said they faxed everything to your office. I would like to get a second opinion referral." It was probably Jessica who uhm and ahm'ed and said.. "ok, he'll call you back." NO CALL BACK. I never got a call back. Note I used the alarming word: cancer. What does that conjure in a normal person's mind? Aggressive, fast-growing killer, maybe? And so my husband made me switch primary. We needed someone who cares. I'm not healthy anymore. I need somebody COMPETENT. Dr. Iwata does not care. Dr. Iwata, who I've been seeing for my physical the last five years, cannot catch a rock hard formation on my throat all other doctors since have called "obvious." As soon as I got my new primary, I was like.. ohmygawd.. it's been 20 minutes and this doctor is still here, asking about me, talking to me! Is this what a REAL DOCTOR DOES? YES. It's as simple as that. A REAL DOCTOR CARES. A REAL DOCTOR TOUCHES YOU TO CHECK IF ALL YOUR PARTS ARE RUNNING CORRECTLY. It's like going to a mechanic for your body. You know how to run it, but you don't know how to check it. I urge you: find a doctor you can trust. Find a doctor who cares. Find a doctor who knows how to check your parts. Iwata is not that doctor. He runs a tight ship and he's willing to forfeit you to see more patients. And say he's busy, as long as you can talk to a nurse right. But the nurse has sewn lips. And the rest of his admin are disorganized morons. Jessica, in particular, radiates crazy angry vibes - ironic really since the office is all trying to be zen with aquariums and terrariums. She's in customer service, but I think in her head she's more than that. I called back Dr. Iwata's office. I cried and screamed at the admin. "I called you, the specialist FAXED YOU two different occasions about the FUCK!NG CANCER. All I wanted was a second opinion and for Iwata to call me back, and I HEARD NOTHING BACK!" The pluses: the wait is short, the place looks like Anthropologie. Since moving to Los Angeles two years ago, I've been to a handful of doctors. Every time I go and leave, I'm left feeling "Meh." and wanting to get back to Yelp to find someone else to trust my health with. That journey stops here! Dr. Iwata is amazing, as is his entire staff. I called over the weekend desperate to make an appointment for what I knew was a lung infection after operating a nasty fog machine on set. I left a message for them, letting them know I'm a new patient but VERY close, so I could come in whenever if they had a cancellation. They called me back first thing Monday morning and made space for me. As has been mentioned, his office space is beautiful and relaxing. He is located above the cooking school / 24 hour fitness. Take the elevator to the top! Parking can be a pain, at least I think so. :b There is street / metered parking. Dr. Iwata was great. Calm, patient, friendly, everything you need and want from a doctor! He confirmed I had a lung infection. He wrote me a prescription, but urged me to wait a couple of days to see if I improved before taking them. I dig that. I'm not really one to take medicine ever, so I appreciate a doctor who doesn't just throw pills at the problem. I ended up filling the prescription after a few days, and after another week, I finally felt better. Moral of the story: make someone else operate the fog machine and go see Dr. Iwata. The waiting room looks like you entered a five star Spa with beautiful golden wall paper representing algae and seashells. Ocean decor dominates and classic French-style furniture makes you wonder if it's ok to sit down or if you should admire the antiques on display instead. Ladies in the front were mighty friendly and wouldn't stop smiling from the moment I arrived to the moment I was taken in by the nurse. Nurse was professional but had a warm comforting energy. Moved quickly but was thorough in her preliminary examination. I was led into a room and barely waited 5 minutes for the doctor who mafr sure to knock first before entering. Doctor was not intimidating in the least, he also had a warm comforting energy. Did a thorough check up and listened to my heart and tummy before assessing the cause of my distress. He listened to my concerns and offered great feedback. He took his time and made sure I felt that all my concerns were addressed and all my questions were answered. He offered me a naturopathic remedy to my ailments and said he always suggested young and healthy patients like me to try restoring the balance in the body the natural way before resorting to medication. Best doctor!!! I'm pretty healthy and would go in for an annual checkup. The nurses are great at finding my blood veins to draw out blood and the whole process goes by very smoothly. Wait time is less than 10 min once you arrive for your appointment. I have been two other places where they make you wait for over an hour or two. Not to mention even a longer wait after every procedure. But with Dr. Iwata, there's no waiting around and every staff makes sure that things get done quickly and efficiently! He doesn't rush you and answers all your questions. He's very good at listening and makes sure that you leave without any concerns or unanswered questions. He's honest and makes you feel at ease. Nice physician but as others have mentioned his physicals are not thorough. Bloodwork is taken during the physical so there are no lab results to review or discuss. Results are simply mailed to your home after the fact with a generic printout of things to do (ex. Exercise more). Dr Iwata does not seem to perform physical exams either. I have a family history of thyroid and autoimmune disorders, yet he has never palpated my thyroid or joints. My husband has some health issues as well but other than a referral for ultrasound (which came back abnormal by the way) we heard nothing. I actually called the receptionist who told me to tell my husband to "exercise more" - there was no follow up or actual discussion regarding next steps and monitoring with Dr Iwata himself. They do take vitals but I work in healthcare and can do all that myself. We have switched to a more thorough physician. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Iwata for years now. I am very happy with my care here. He has the best "chair side" manner of any doctor I know. I'm a nurse and you can't run game on me. He's amazing. I miss his previous office because it was an amazing penthouse but the parking was horrendous. The new place is ok. There is a parking structure across the street so no big deal. His staff is great too. You may wait to see him but come on people! He will give you adequate time also so be patient. As far as COVID reg- seats nicely distanced and hand sanitizers are readily available. All staff wearing masks and they take your temp before you walk in. Love my doc! read more

I agree with other posters. Dr Iwata is not thorough - all he does are labs. He will not examine you or even touch you. A friend had an issue with a lump but dr refused to touch. Instead he referred her to a specialist. Also, neither Dr Iwata or his office reviews any records you provide to them or even the previous visit Notes. He wings it which is very sad in view of how much is billed to the patient or insurance. At first, he seems great i.e. Friendly, does labs until you realize that is all he does. His physical exam consisted of: sticking out his arms, wiggling his fingers, and to smile....then he was told "Don't worry, you're a healthy man"....are you kidding me?! It all started with an itch in my throat which led to sporadic coughing and then to constant coughing after a few days and sleepless nights. Being the stubborn person that I am, I refused to see a doctor until almost a week since the itch in my throat started. I called my usual doctor who I've been going to for almost 10 years and was told that the earliest she can squeeze me in is 5 days from now. A few good friends recommended their doctors and so I called only to find out that it would be 6 days from now until those doctors can see me. This only reinforced my stubborness that I can suck it up and tough out this cough. It wasn't until after another night of sleeplessness passed that my fiancee sent me a yelp link and said to call this doctor and see if he can squeeze me in. I figured after reading all of the good reviews - why not, I go to restaurants based off of word of mouth from complete strangers, why not find a doctor too? I called in and asked if they had an availability - I was squeezed in within the half hour and once I got there after filling out the information sheet, my stats were taken and I saw Dr. Iwata within 30 minutes of making my call. Dr. Iwata is everything everyone on here says he is - patient, kind, easy to talk to, and most of all, he doesn't talk down to you and answers all of your questions. Within minutes, he had me diagnosed and gave me helpful suggestions on what I can do besides the medication he was going to prescribe me to start feeling better. He also explained what was going on with my body and why the symptions I had were occuring. He even went so far as to call in my presciption to the pharmacist I wanted so that by the time I had gotten there, my meds were waiting for me! Dr. Iwata is amazing! Almost all doctors that I have met in the US have not been very nice. Most have been abrupt and rude. Dr. Iwata, on the other hand, was extremely caring and gentle. He took the time to listen to me. Seriously, the positive reviews are incomprehensible. I was looking for a doctor in Pasadena to handle some basic health issues. Dr. Iwata did not listen, could not get out of the room fast enough, misdiagnosed the problem and made some comments that showed gaps in medical knowledge. Granted he is an internal medicine dr with no board certifications, but his level of familiarity with cardio-thoracic was so much less than my current family doctor that I will continue making the drive across town. The stars are for the decor. The office looks like a spa with dark wood floors, pale blue walls, several chandeliers, built-in fish tank, and everywhere the most beautiful collection of shells, knicks knacks and bric-a-brac that I have ever seen. The views from the penthouse are fantastic. The nurse and desk staff are very pleasant. No difficulty parking. Elevator arrived quickly. Wait was short. Scheduling an appointment was easy and soon. Though the office is beautiful and everyone is polite, I didn't really have a very good experience there. I had a nurse attempt to draw my blood and try three times before leaving, and another nurse came in and tried two more times. They would insert the needle and move the needle around to search for a vein, and once I felt excruciating pain up and down my arm, and I asked her (with increasing panic) to pull it out and she had a very delayed reaction. Eventually they ended up drawing blood from the top of my hand. I've had my blood drawn before, and though my veins are smaller I never had such an issue before. Also they supposedly called in my medication, but when I went to the pharmacy to pick it up they didn't have it, forcing me to wait over the weekend to get it (I went in on Friday). The pharmacy said it wasn't called in, and the doctor's office said that it was the fault of the pharmacy so I don't really know who to believe. Dr. Iwata is my new Primary care physician. I couldn't be happier. My first visit was exceptional. I was scheduled quickly, the assistants were responsive and professional and the waiting room was comfy. The doctor spent a good deal of time listening to my medical history and offered up quick observations. I was actually taking unnecessary medication and wasn't surprised, as my last physician passed the stuff out like candy. It makes a difference when your doctor really spends the time to evaluate your needs. The labwork was quickly processed and I received a call with results from one of the assistants as promised. I also like that they draw bloodwork in house and you don't have to trek around town and wait in one of those crowded lobbies. While this office is very nicely decorated and the doctor's bedside manner is good, there were a few concerns that I had while I was seen by Dr. Iwata: *Dr. Iwata refused to fill out any paperwork for my insurance (through my employer) unless he received payment from the insurance company; *While I was feeling sick, he neither diagnosed nor referred me to any specialist. As usual, Yelp comes to the rescue...I found Dr. Iwata's info, and called, within 10 minutes I have an appointment for the next day. And it helps that he is open until 7pm. When I went to see him, I thought I had gotten out at the wrong floor because how nice his office is. So not like any other doctor's office you've ever seen. Everything was done in light blue, white, and vintage-y decor...complete with chandellier and print wallpaper... His office staff are really polite and nice. They even do this little Japanese bow when they hand you your paperwork...so cute... When I met the doctor, he's very attentive, a great listener and very frank, which I like. After ward, they sent my prescription directly to my usual pharmacy (a plus), and when the pharmacy wouldn't release one of the meds, I called the doctor's office after 6pm on the way to the pharmacy, and the nurse said she'll call, and by the time I got there, the meds should be ready...and it was...Good thing they were open late. The office staff is a complete joke! Wasted almost a week of my time trying to reason with this office!! I am on thyroid medication which I must take on a daily basis. In the last four months everything changed, my job, address (live in mid city, work in century city) phone number and health insurance provider. I'm in medical insurance limbo! (New HMO insurance kicked in August 1st with appointment in September 2nd) My Rx is running low and technically since he issued my prescription, I'm still his patient. He won't issue a refill because I must to do a follow up visit with him. Btw, I've been on the same dosage for years. I am disappointed with his staff who are especially unprofessional and lacking any humanity. They recommended I just walk into any urgent care and get my prescription. I hope going without my medication for weeks will not result into something serious down the road for me. If your looking for competency and compassion here; your signing up with the wrong office!! I just had my first visit to Dr. Iwata's Huntington Healthcare office in Pasadena last weekend. I had moved to LA 18 months ago, and I was eager to find a doctor here I could trust. After reading about Dr. Iwata on Yelp and Vitals.com, I scheduled a Saturday morning appointment. From the moment I entered the office to the moment I left, I felt grateful to have found this place. I still do. The nurses are so helpful, kind, and professional; and the office is gorgeous, clean, and conveniently located. Dr. Iwata himself was clearly up-to-date on his medical knowledge, and his bedside manner left nothing to be desired. As a teacher, I appreciated that Dr. Iwata described to me my few medical issues not only verbally but also by drawing simple sketches on his pad. I had blood work done, and his office called me with the results a few days later and were more than happy to send me a hard copy by mail. I was looking for a new doctor and went immediately to Yelp and found that the majority of Dr. Iwata's reviews were 5 stars! I thought it couldn't be true, but I took the chance and switched doctors with my insurance company and scheduled a physical exam. First of all, the receptionist and nurses are all extremely friendly, and, yes, the office is decorated very nicely. I think one reviewer said "upscale." I liken it more to a spa feeling. Neither of those reasons are why I am giving Dr. Iwata 5 stars. Here is why: 1. I am a 22-year hypothyroid patient, so I'm used to doctors shuffling me off. Dr. Iwata not only listened intently, but explained what the thyroid does and how it effects the rest of the body. He patiently answered all of my questions. 2. On my first visit they did a physical which included some blood work. I asked if they would add in one test for B-12, no problem. Dr. Iwata then mentioned that I would need to be patient because they mail my lab results to me. Who does that??!! But, he said, if you get a call from me that means that something isn't right. Jokingly, he continued by saying, "So, you don't want to get a call from me." 3. I have not once felt rushed or pushed aside. In fact, I asked if he would be willing to work with my Naturopath Doctor to figure out a way to get my thyroid med switched from synthetic to natural. He said, no problem. I hesitated to write this review because, well ... y'know.... you don't want the whole world to know where the good things are. Sometimes you want to be selfish and keep some of the good to yourself, but this guy does need to be shared. I would like for him to stay in business so that I can keep going to him! Yesterday was my first visit; I selected Dr Iwata based on the feedback on Yelp and I have to say that the visit lived up to all the positive reviews posted here. The receptionists were very friendly and helpful and didn't seem put out to be doing their jobs (like so many I've encountered in other doctor's offices). Dr Iwata has such a lovely way about him, listens and offers sound advice instead of jotting off a prescription and pushing you out the door. The only thing that wasn't so awesome is the parking situation, which is out of the control of the office. Just be sure to go a few minutes early in case parking isn't readily available and you've got to search a bit. read more

Dr. Iwata and his staff is amazing. Every one is so friendly and kind hearted! I have been to some doctors office and the receptionist are rude and never try to make any conversation. I feel very welcomed when ever I come in to the office. The wait time is very reasonable, I never waited more than 15 minutes. I have been coming to Dr. Iwata for a few years now. Never thought about writing a review until I saw a few disappointing ones recently. I have been to "shitty" doctors and let me tell you, Dr. Iwata is not one! He never spends less than 20 minutes with me, even when he knows all I have is a simple cold. He has always exceeded my expectations to make sure I am taken care of even though I have an HMO insurance. Most "shitty" doctors that I have been to in the past spend less than 2 minutes with me because of my insurance! It is really upsetting to see these ungrateful comments. If you have a medical condition and need to follow up for a prescription refill then you must go in and see your doctor. There is a reason why it's called "prescription" refill, otherwise go and get something over the counter. You know you have a responsible doctor when he calls you every 3 months to follow up with you. So for those of you who don't see your physician often and you have certain medical conditions you are probably being neglected by your doctor. I know I am in good hands with Dr. Iwata! I agree with the previous comment (Henry C.) I hope Dr. Iwata does not become a boutique or concierge doctor. We will definitely miss out on a great doctor who truly cares about his patients. read more

Never call his office. His nurses and office never picks up the phone and never answers them. I felt numerous amount of VM but nothing. When i wanted prescription, the pharmacist called but nothing. Their office simply do not want to answer any calls. read more

Clean inviting office. Friendly staff. Easy access in Pasadena located just above the cordon bleu and 24 hours fitness. They are on the 5th floor also know as the Penthouse. I don't know about you but furst impressions of an office are important to me and in most M.D. offices they have the annoying window that is like don't talk to me. Not here, they have a nice inviting open area much like a nice massage office or a day spa. All the colors are bright and they hard wood floors are classy just like the lights. The office is nicely decorated, but that's not why I'm giving it 5 stars. I'm consistently impressed with Dr. Iwata's emphasis on prevention and holistic care rather than dosing me with pharmaceuticals like the doctors at my former HMO that rhymes with Miser. I've never had a long wait time, which is impressive because I understand that the needs of sick patients can be unpredictable and can mess with a schedule. Dr. Iwata's also just a nice guy. He always seems happy to see you. Maybe I'm overly grateful after several years of indifferent care at Miser, but there's something to be said for a great bedside manner. read more

Dr Iwata is awesome. Best doctor I've had in years and across many cities. I've recommended him to practically everyone I know. This doctor's office does not feel like hospital internal medicine, where they're always behind on appointments, cramming in patients, and then you get to spend a whopping three minutes with primary care doctor. Dr Iwata's practice is calming and efficient. His staff is really friendly. You'll never have to wait long for your appointments. There's always a great movie playing on the flat screen in the waiting room, which is never over crowded. Dr Iwata doesn't rush you in and out. He takes the time to listen to your concerns and questions. He's hesitant prescribing long term medications for young people (and not enough doctors are these days). For example sleeping pills or blood pressure medication to a 30 year old with borderline high blood pressure. He told my boyfriend to exhaust the natural remedies first, like regular exercise and healthy eating habits as opposed to pills. At the same time, I went in with an ear infection last week. The emergency clinic in Hollywood had prescribed me the wrong kind of antibiotic, and my ears were hurting bad, Dr Iwata quickly figured it out and explained zitromax doesn't work on ear infections. He prescribed me a amoxicilin and my infection cleared right up. He knows his stuff. He has great bedside manner. My boyfriend and I both see him, and make our appointments together, he's very accommodating to our schedules. We live in the city of LA and will never change our doctor. We don't mind the 20-30 minute drive out to Pasadena. It's totally worth it, and the Le Cordon Blu cafe downstairs is great for lunch afterwards. read more

I scheduled a first time appointment probably about a week and a half ago. My appointment was for tomorrow. The lady in the office called me today to tell me that my insurance is not covered by their office. Would be fine if it was more like last week she told me this instead of the day before the actual appointment. I gave her all my info the day I made the appointment so SURELY she had plenty of time to look into it. Now, the time that i requested off for tomorrow is a total waste. Doctor Iwata is a caring and conscientious doctor! In a world where health insurance companies/managed care have ruined the quality of the doctor-patient relationship, it seems Doctor Iwata is one of the rare doctors who takes his time with his patients and discusses their problems and possible solutions very thoroughly. I was so surprised when Dr. Iwata actually walked me out of his office and into the waiting room (the first time a doctor didn't leave the examination room before I did). His personality and the way in which he interacts with his patients is sure to make them feel at ease. The waiting room staff and nurses are equally friendly. I also must say that the atmosphere of the entire doctors office is decorated as if it were a day spa. Very relaxing and stress-free setting! I highly recommend Dr. Iwata read more
