My third visit today. I'm almost 70 had a cervical fusion 17 years ago and have arthritus and other shoulder issue. Been through PT and doctors but no real fix for neck and shoulder pain. Seen Yuki twice for Swedish massage and she is amazing. She knows I have neck and shoulder issues and focuses her efforts there a bit more , not a cookbook massage. The massage therapist was very in tune and knowledgeable about the body and my individual/prenatal massage needs. It was clean, professional, and quiet. I was extremely satisfied with my massage. The amount of pressure i requested was perfect and the therapist listened when I requested lighter or firmer pressure. It is located in a house type building/minimalistic appearance and they share a parking lot with an auto mechanic. I wasn't sure what to expect but it is a Sunday and most places are closed and the few that were open I was familiar with and knew they wouldn't be able to do the work I needed so I thought I would give this place a try. Worst case scenario, it would be a disappointment. Best case scenario, it would be better than I had hoped for. First thing is first. Marie worked on me and she is good at what she does and has training in multiple modalities which helps considerably when you have problems that aren't solved by a simple back rub. I walked in hobbling from plantar fascitis issues that involved my entire lateral leg and a back so strained and locked up that I could barely move with any comfort. As she worked, the massage revealed multiple points of tenderness and strain patterns and she addressed them with both intensity and competence. She is VERY knowledgeable but English is her second language which can make it difficult for her to express the full scope of her understanding and knowledge base. Based on what she was doing and where she was focusing, she is not a McD's of Massage experience like you find at the national massage franchise chains. If you don't mind discomfort and you want a proper, therapeutic massage - this is one of the places I would recommend. Word of warning: Asian therapeutic massage is NOT a sensual massage experience. It is more like a combination of mild torture, bad tasting medicine that's good for you, and feeling like someone just gave you a brand, new functional body afterwards as your reward for getting through the session. I was not only able to walk without hobbling but my back was significantly improved. I have more work that needs to be done to undo years of working and not having better body care but what she accomplished in 90 minutes was impressive (and more than a little uncomfortable in areas I didn't know were so tender until she worked on them!) I will be back to get worked on by her. There are also overhead "ashiatsu" bars in the office for those of you who like someone "walking on your back". I do, I had it done and I am so thrilled to have found this office that offers it. This massage is not for the faint of heart or the petite and less robust. People who like really deep, firm pressure (big, muscular people or people with tightly bound up muscles in the back and glutes like myself) will get more out of this style massage because you are NOT being assaulted with thumbs and elbows jamming into you until tears well up in your eyes for the entire session. Thai massage is offered there as well as "gua sha" or "scraping". In PT circles, the man who co-opted this Asian technique, wrote a research paper on it and came up with a fancier tool for it named it after himself so you can look up "Graston Technique" or the generic "IASTM" (instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization) on Youtube if you are curious about this. It is next on the list of services I want to explore on my next visit. This is a fantastic small business and I am relieved that I do not have to write another "word of warning" review of yet another less than acceptable massage experience. Set aside your prejudices and racial profiling, and you will be amazed at the skills and competence you will find in some of these places. This place is definitely one of them. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HEAR ASIAN SPA AND IMMEDIATELY MAKE ASSUMPTIONS: If you are looking for a massage that includes "extras for tips", this is NOT that kind of business. Noone with her education, skills and competency has to resort to THAT to make a living. Please don't insult her by assuming that, don't waste your time and just move on. You wouldn't ask your proctologist or your gynecologist for those kinds of "extras" during your appointment with them because they are trained and respected professionals. Treat all your massage therapists with the same respect. Remember that a Massage Envy in NJ filed a lawsuit about a male massage therapist landing face first in his female client's lap (not once but twice according to her), those "services" you are looking for aren't "race or gender" based and you should really ask yourself why you want to readily embrace racist assumptions about Asians based on what? ... Something that someone (you wouldn't/shouldn't trust alone with your daughter or her friends) told you? Don't let the location or outside look of the place fool you! It's off the highway and these practitioners are new to this spa location. With that being said the outside signage hasn't been updated just yet. I'm sharing this because I want to highlight-the inside is beautiful and the spa is 100% professional! I worked with Jennie. Jennie is a miracle worker! Before I came I was balled up in pain, even laying down hurt. I booked a one hour thai massage. She was AMAZING because of my level of pain she was incredibly slow and careful, applied appropriate pressure, was responsive to my body and took the time needed. She talked through everything and let me know what was going on with my body. When I went to leave, I felt 100x better. The massage even opened up my sinuses! It was amazing!
