A very relaxing experience With an abundant supply of arthritic and other complaints, I went to A Balanced Life Massage today seeking some relief. I also have had numerous surgeries after a dissolute life with HS and college athletics and, to be frank, I was hurting. After an hour, I left feeling drained and a bit like one of what I call "puddle" puppies who look so relaxed as to have been poured into a melting heap. I was fixing my thoughts on a nap before dinner. After awaking, I felt that familiar warmth and relaxation that one frequently gets from a good massage, in the hands of a practiced professional. The facility was inviting and clean and the whole experience was very rewarding and satisfying. I would rate the overall experience as being one of the top five massages that I have received in about six different countries. Called and was reminded that I have a groupon and she doesnt care that my appointment was changed and she has no other times during the mon- wed period. 4. My appointment was rescheduled due to the therapist running behind. 5. Finally found an appointment but schedueld me for 60 mins and not 90 as paid for. 6. Therapist had no clue about 90 min massage and had to call 2 people to get my time straight. 7. Therapist didnt ask about pressure and seemed cumbersome. 8. On October 12, 2 weeks ago went to Balanced Life for a massage with Nannette but wound up on the floor on my back. I am still in pain. 15 minutes into the massage I asked to use the bathroom" it's across the hall " she said. I sat up in the dark and put my right leg down, but there was no floor when I put my foot down. I went down into what felt like a deep hole. landing on my right leg, hip, back, cutting my arm and hitting the wall with my head. Can I move my arms and legs was my first thought, I'm not paralyzed. Then a voice up there said " oh, I should have lowered the table". The table had been raised up high, but I was unaware of this. As an OR nurse for over 20 years If I ever let a patient fall off the OR table at any height, I would be looking for another job not actively booking new appointments' have been living on Hydromorphone and Tizanidine. My doctor advised me to write to prevent this from happening to anyone else. This was dangerous, careless and never should have happened. I could have been permanently injured, my doctor said it will take a long time to get back to normal. I am used to swimming at the Y every morning, I miss it. read more

I go to a chiropractor who does not have a massage therapist. I have been going to A Balanced Life Massage for years with Jermain. He is certainly top notch! I have had shoulder, neck and back issues that the chiropractor struggles with correcting. However, when I explained my issue to Jermain, he worked his magic and snap, crackle and pop - all was relieved and the pain never returned! He asked me a series of questions and communicated everything he was going to do to relieve me of the pain. There is no one else I trust, respect or will go to other than Jermaine at A Balanced Life Massage. This explains why I have gone to him for 12 years. Be sure you can hack the music before you book! I was a member for about 4 years and enjoyed many good massages in that time. However, unsuitable music was an issue. Aside from when I was seeing the lead massage therapist, who had a very good playlist, the owner's personal playlist was "on the air." Unfortunately, it includes many inappropriate pieces, some of which are jarring, carry a loud fast beat, or are otherwise incongruent with relaxation and tranquility. Despite years of complaints from staff and clients, including me, Jermaine did not bother to fix the music issue. He made excuses, downplayed the problem, and showed little concern for clients' experience. For $10 a month he could have fixed the problem easily with Spotify, which has a plethora of ready-to-go massage playlists. It's a shame the owner let such an issue fester until one of his top customers left in disgust, but that's how the business rolls. read more

I had a 60 minute massage, purchased via Groupon. I'm not even sure where to start. Not the calm, soothing environment that I prefer for a massage. The room's walls do not go to the ceiling, so you can hear what is happening at the front (phone calls, walk-ins, etc.). The massage therapist had her phone the entire time, and actually laid it on me during the massage. She also had to step out during the massage to handle something at the front. The bed sheets are not luxurious, and the bed actually squeaked during the massage. The oil didn't small nice. And at the end, the massage therapist told me that if I was going to tip in cash, to not leave it at the front because they steal. I will never go back and would not recommend!!! read more

Today (12/4/2020) me and a friend of mines started the new year off right. We went ahead and booked a friendship massage for our girls day out! We both live an hour away in Felton, DE and didn't mind the drive up to Wilmington. When it came time to call and make an appt -We both were able to get in and get an appt set up right away , even for this Saturday, which was such short notice. By the way this was our very first professional massage,So we were already so excited and ready to lay back and relax. Our First impression of the place was that their practice was very clean & peaceful. The staff was also extremely nice & greeted us as soon as we walked in. Literally a few minutes later our massage techs ( Ms.Dorothy + Ms.Nira ) we're ready for us to go back and begin our massage. They explained to us what we had to do to get ready, as well as ask what some of our problem areas were , so that they could focus on that in particular. But the main thing :was to lay down , close our eyes and relax our bodies while they take over . The moment/second, the massage began, I had gotten goose bumps from head to toe!. It felt so amazing! Both ladies were very professional, gentle with a soft touch and made us feel calm +comfortable. They took their time and didn't rush. We had chosen to get a 60minute Swedish/ relaxation massage and I'm telling you, it was the best! The room was warm and the lights were dimmed down, plus they had relaxing music on as well. By the time they were finished with our massage, we were left feeling completely refreshed and relaxed. All of our kinks were massaged out and at one point I even heard my friend snoring from the table across from me. Purchased a couples massage on Amazon and took a random Saturday to go. Easy 30 or so min drive from South Philly. Plenty of parking out front. The lobby was calm and soft, and the recptionists were kind and friendly. Intake was paperless (yes!!!) didnt ask a thousand questions. Our masage staff was friendly, and greeted us right away. The room was big, and bare but certainly calm. Mayve a few large plants could even enhance the welcoming nature! My criticism here is that it was a bit cold in the room but that is to be expected - it is repurposed office space. The room likely can't be heated more so than the whole space, I assume. The massages were great, and we then spent 20 minutes in the salt closet which was this wooden stall with digital controls, lights and music, and nice and hot. That was wonderful! I hate that I have to do this :(, but I used to love this place so much! I had one bad experience here and that's all, but that's because they are playing with my money. The staff are very nice but the communication, and the scheduling is not the best :(! A while ago, I received a massage and at the end of my appointment I scheduled another massage for the upcoming month. Mind you, they already had my card on file. Days before the appointment I had a family emergency, so I called two days in advance, I also called one day in advance, and I called the day of-- Just to RESCHEDULE (not cancel) my massage. Not once did anyone answer the phone. Throughtout that week I called a total of four to five times. Not to mention, when I reached the voicemail, their mailbox was completely full so there was no means of communication. I also did not know their email so it was hard to even communicate with them about my appointment. So on the day of the massage, I tried to call them a few times but they did not answer, and I obviously was not able to attend the appointment. Later on that day while I was out and about, I noticed they charged my card for the appointment! So I decided to contact the place and miraculously they answered after the second call. I told them that they haven't been answering all day and a couple days back as well, and they told me that it has been a busy day! (?) When I told them I tried to reschedule multiple times and that I needed my money back (because they weren't allowing me to get ahold of them), they told me that I needed proof that I tried to call multiple times & they told me where to email the proof to. I emailed them and they decided to use my money as credit for when I come back. They never addressed my proof either. They basically made me feel like it was my fault that they didn't answer the phone or that I didn't send an email to an address that i didn't remember/know at the time? How could I possibly reschedule my appointment if no one would answer? Or even call back? I'm just so confused! So I disputed the charge and got my money back the next day, but TODAY it's showing that they tried to charge me once again (MONEY IS OUT OF MY ACCOUNT) after my bank ruled that it was not my fault at all! It has been months by the way! I provided all statements to my babk saying that I tried to communicate with the massage parlor and about how they did not answer the phone (and best believe I spoke about how their voicemail was completely full). It hurts my feelings to do this because I actually grew a bond with this place and this was the only place I came to for massages. I feel betrayed in a sense. I just want my money, I'm young and I work too hard (two jobs, side career, school and a small business) to have my money played with like that. Disclaimers - I'm writing a review based on an experience from February 2018, and I never actually got to experience a massage there. But the experience I had, both when I visited the location and then when I voiced my complaints to them, were thoroughly rotten to the point that I still feel the need to share. My girlfriend and I went there for an appointment we had made for a couples massage. It was purchased on Groupon for $99. From essentially the moment we met our masseuses, the experience began to grow uncomfortable. This had nothing to do with the masseuse assigned to me, a petite young black female masseuse, and everything to do with the man assigned to my girlfriend (I honestly thought I had requested the man for me and the woman for my girlfriend when I made the reservation on the phone, but it's possible I misremembered where that's concerned). It was a white man, possibly in his 40s, with dark hair and facial hair. He reminded me somewhat of Marc Maron if I had to find someone to compare him to physically. He showed visible and audible annoyance when we informed them that my girlfriend was having trouble smelling due to congestion and that, while I had initially chosen to receive hot towels and she aroma therapy, we wanted to switch who got what. He seemed likewise impatient/annoyed when I asked if I could have a good look at the scents offered to make my pick. In the room, my girlfriend disclosed that she hadn't had a professional massage before to him and was a bit nervous. I asked, noting that we had two totally different tables - mine with a hole for the head for when laying face down, hers not - if we were going to be getting the same basic massage. The male masseuse replied condescendingly and with annoyance, with questions - "What, do you THINK we do the EXACT same massage for EVERY person? What do you MEAN the same massage?" I pointed out the difference in tables and that, as a couples massage, I assumed the basic format would be the same, not every move of the actual massage. I wouldn't say I was in any way giving off combative vibes or tones, mind you, just explaining my question. I still absolutely wanted the massage. They asked us to get undressed and left the room to let us do so, but my girlfriend told me she felt uncomfortable about it and wanted to leave her thin tank top on. When the masseuses returned to check on us, we shared this with the male. He firmly assured her "your breasts will not be exposed" (not a concern she had voiced so bluntly) and told her she had to take the top off and left again to let us undress. My girlfriend felt very uncomfortable at this point, having started a bit nervous to begin with and now feeling that her masseuse was being dismissive of her concerns and short with both of us. She began to cry a bit and I asked one more time if, due to her discomfort, he could let her keep the top on, but again, he quickly insisted that wasn't how the massages work and that, yes, tops had to be off. When they left again I went out and told them that we would have to pass on our massages for the day. On the way out, the receptionist noticed that something was wrong and asked my girlfriend if she was ok, noting that she looked like she was about to cry. She suggested we email the office to share our experience. The masseuse in question (I didn't get names unfortunately) was rude and dismissive in all of our interactions and seemed to aggressively ruin every opportunity he had to make my girlfriend more comfortable. Even at the end, when we were talking to the receptionist, he pointlessly felt the need to come out into the lobby when it was clear we had left due to a problem with him and would feel uncomfortable speaking openly. We may have thrown them a minor curve by switching the extra services, but nothing we did warranted such tone deaf treatment. The receptionist and other masseuse, as well as the space and mood inside, were all fine on that day. Fast forward to the aftermath. I was directed to email them at balancedlifemassages@gmail.com. The name that came up when I sent it was Jermaine Cannon, but the content of the email identified its sender as Shauna, the office manager. I shared the same story as I did above. and was told that "they understand that sometimes people's energies don't mix" but that they couldn't refund the money. Instead, they offered us the chance to come in and pay thirty-five additional dollars each "with two of my best therapists" so we could "get the experience we were expecting." I did not take their offer. Now I don't know if all of those staff members are still there or not, but they made it clear that they were not particularly concerned about their customers, and honestly the Marc Maron-looking guy was a total creep. Based on that whole experience, I can't recommend against the place enough. Had I gone alone, maybe my experience would have been completely different, but that was not the case. read more

Massage quality: The massage therapists did a sufficient job (nice people). I left relaxed and was comfortable. Keep in mind the Groupon can only be used with certified massage therapists NOT licensed massage therapists. There is a difference - look it up. I was not told this until I arrived by looking at the back of the sign in form. I was also massaged in areas I did not approve. I only checked that I would like my feet massaged, not glutes, head, face, and chest. However, my glutes, head and face were massaged. This means the therapist didn't even read my sheet. Ambiance: The office overall appeared clean, but the sheets were old, thin, and worn out, the beds smelled like they already had oil on them from the last person, and it was very dark. The music was played low and it was too quiet. I wish I had taken pictures of the beThe free beverage is served in Styrofoam cups. Customer Service: The front desk staff is unprofessional. I walked in, was not greeted. So I walked up to the counter and said "Hello!" and 5 seconds later, I was addressed after the two women behind the counter finished their conversation. When the receptionist saw that the Groupon included "a hot towel or aromatherapy" she said, "They're gonna do a hot towel," as if there was no aromatherapy available. Pricing: I paid $79 for a Groupon. Upon booking, the owner told me Groupon members had to pay a $30 deposit. Be prepared. Bottom line: I wouldn't recommend this place or return. Dingy is my best description. I'll go spend $200+ elsewhere and receive much better care with licensed therapists and quality service. read more

I went here for a massage for the first time and overall I had a pretty good experience. I was a bit nervous because of the bad reviews when it came to noise in the hallways and massage technicians being unprofessional but Yolanda was great, and it was quiet in the building the whole time. I went on a Tuesday night. The beds were heated which was amazing and the rooms were relaxing as well. I also got the first time client 60 minute massage for $39. The only reason I gave A Balanced Life Massage 4 stars is because the music was a little weird. It was instrumentals of a mixture of all types of music. I mean it went from Celene Dion "My heart will go on" to Wiz Khalifa "Black and Yellow" and I feel like the speed of the music subconsciously made my massage technician massage with the music, so it wasn't always consistent. We walked in last night and the receptionist dressed in sweats informed us that only one therapist could be there for the couples' massage or we could wait until 10pm! She said there was a scheduling issue and the therapist said he didn't see it on his schedule and had "stuff to do" so he left. He was out of line and unprofessional. Was there for a 90min massage stayed for 50min which was too long. The upside was Shauna who was working the front office. As far as massages go, this place is the best! They have a great price, and a nice atmosphere. I had a massage with Adam, and he is the first therapist to really listen to me when I asked for more or less pressure. At my request, he focused on a few major problem areas, and got everything loosened up and working properly again. My shoulders haven't felt this good in ages. Adam is a wonderful therapist! I had placed my account on a 90 day hold and wanted to use up already paid for massages before continuing with a plan. I spoke with the "manager" and tried to work it out but they wanted me to keep paying even though I was already 12 massages in the hole. NOW they've decided I didn't put in writing that I wanted to cancel and that the cost of the unused massages will be used to "settle" my account leaving $40 that I can use for a service there. As if! I'm not typically one to write negative reviews but felt compelled to after my experience with A Balanced Life Massage. I typically go to A Magical Escape but since they were booked solid today I thought I'd go out on a limb and try this place. I called at 11:30am and after giving the lady my credit card number and some other info was told I was "all set" for a 6pm massage. When I arrived at 6pm, the lady at the front desk told me there was no appointment under my name. The next available appointment with a female therapist was at 8:30pm and was told I could come back then. She offered nothing in order to make up for the massive inconvenience and barely even apologized for the whole mishap. So back home I went. When I returned at 8:30pm, I was greeted promptly by my massage therapist and told her I prefer a deep tissue massage. Her technique was certainly not similar to the deep tissue massages I've been used to having for 10+ years. Her strokes were very fast and all over the place with little pressure. She seemed like she was in a massive hurry and simply trying to make the time go by. It was a very rushed experience and not the relaxation you hope to achieve when paying for a massage. This was hands down the least relaxing and satisfying massage I've had in years. Needless to say I will not be returning. Try A Magical Escape Therapeutic Bodyworks instead. I love my massages (I have chronic pain and on my feet all day at work) but it's hard to find someone good and that actually listens to you. I did the 4 handed/2 therapist massage from Groupon and it was amazing. It was like 2 hours of work in 1 hour. I went for more therapeutic to relieve pain than relaxing. It's interesting to have 4 hands on you! I had Starr and Jessica who were both amazing. Starr knew exactly where to go on my back and neck without me even telling her. Jessica did my lower half and included stretches which felt great and always cares about my modesty with the stretches . I went back for a regular 1 hour with Jessica and she listened to all of my concerns and did an amazing job. What I like most is how well they listen and get your problem areas. Second, I like how soon I've been getting appointments. Usually within 2 days or even that same day! The only downfall is the ambiance. Everyone is nice but it doesn't feel like a spa at all. Everything is tan, dark, and almost gives an office vibe. Ambience is always the least of my concerns because cmon, the therapist is what matters! But it is nice when the place looks nice. VERY LOW CLASS PLACE FOR SURE!!! Horrible experience. Arrived on time 15 minutes early for the couples massage after taking off from work only to find out that they canceled our appointment & we had to wait 2 hours for someone available. Receptionist was unapologetic & very unprofessional. The atmosphere is awful & gloomy. Reception area stunk. The place looks old & run down & the Sofa looks like it was taken from the dumpster. My friend suggested we leave & forget about this place because he felt that the rest of the service is going to be crappy & a waste of time. But because we took off from work & he already paid for it & the receptionist denied our refund request because it was a Groupon offer, we stayed against my better judgement even though my gut was also telling me the same thing before he even mentioned it. Well it was beyond awful & the worst experience. Massage rooms are very unsanitary & also (visually dirty, smelly, heavily soiled linens) on the massage tables, including the headrest. They tell u to put your clothes & other belongings into a also visually dirty storage chest. We had the choice of (hot towel or aroma therapy massage) but there were no hot towels available at all. How unorganized! So we had to settle for unscented oil. The masseuse was very inexperienced & was just rubbing heavy oil on me. It was not relaxing at all. I was uncomfortable & wanted it to be over with at this point because I clearly was not receiving a massage. The room also felt like an icebox. I was very cold the entire time. When it was over, my friend said his masseuse did not give him a massage, she just rubbed oil on him. My masseuse also used way too much oil & it was very heavy oil. I had to wipe a lot of it off & it still wasn't coming off. We weren't offered beverages as advertised, just a tiny styrofoam cup of possible tap water which we declined. We assume it was tap water considering the smelly, dirty, heavily, soiled linens. After all, why in the world would they be offering spring water if they don't even use fresh linens? As soon as we left both of our faces started feeling funny & then we started breaking out. Our bodies & faces were itching badly. When I got home, I had to shower for 30 minutes to get the oils off until I felt clean. Needless to say, this was a horrible experience from the moment we stepped foot in the door & had that awful experience with the receptionist. I should've listened to my gut & my friend & left like he suggested, because we left there feeling worse & itchy to say they least. Not to mention $100 waisted.
