Sure, I know how topaint stuff. But, after reading many many Internet horror stories of DIY paint projects, I looked for a professional painter with experience and a history of success. Bam! Shelly's Kitchen and Design. From start to finish, Shelly and her staff were committed to making this project, which also included new countertops for both areas, a complete success, and it was! Everyone who I met or spoke with; Hannah, Holly, Liza, Carrie or Jason, took the time to explain their individual role in this process, including Shelly. Her experience and guidance were invaluable, her patience greatly appreciated and her straightforward approach to decision making was - in a word - refreshing. Visiting the shop a couple of times to choose colors and hardware allowed me to see the operation in person. I saw the same types of cabinetry go in the RUSS booth and come out perfectly painted. The transformation of my tired well-worn kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, to something more contemporary and fresher looking, was incredible. Like they say, its's amazing what a little paint can do. After living in our home for 15 years, we were ready for a change but didn't want to spend a ton of money. Shelly's Kitchens gave us a phenomenal new look for a fraction of the cost of replacing my entire kitchen with new cabinets. Our home is an open concept and seeing our updated, modern kitchen makes me love my home again! The quote process was very easy through the website and I got a response very quickly. They were extremely professional and attentive to all of my questions. My husband and I visited their shop to see what the finished product would look like before deciding and we actually really love the grain of the wood still visible through the paint. It gives our kitchen so much character! Everyone who came to our home was professional and polite. We had a small issue with a hardware hole being in the wrong place and they took the door back to the shop, corrected the issue and brought it back within a week. From beginning to end, the process was about two and a half weeks, and that includes the door they had to make a return trip for. Everything was clearly communicated. I could not be happier with my kitchen! Shelly and her team did an incredible job!!

Old To Gold was responsive and quick with the quote and although their cost was higher than other companies we talked to, they could get our job done much quicker, which was great as we wanted to get the floors done before we moved everything in. Other companies were quoting us a month out or longer! The job itself was quick and everything went well. There were a few dark spots on the floor that they were able to sand out and finish nicely. We also had them interlace some new planks in a spot where the floors had been removed and never put back. Finally, we also paid them to sink and cover the nailheads that were exposed when we ripped up the carpet. We were able to cut some of the costs by removing the carpet and tack strips ourselves. After they finished the job I did notice a few drips of finish that had hardened on some of our newly painted trim and our side door, which was not a big deal but some might have been more upset about that. Everyone I spoke with at Old To Gold including the manager and the guys who came to our house was professional and polite.

Unless you want to be frustrated and finish the job yourself after spending a lot of money, avoid this company. The selection of products is good and the quality of the granite stone is great. The service, installation, and finishing were poor. We were told installation would be two weeks after the design was submitted and the downpayment paid. Five weeks later, the installation was scheduled. No call, no show! One day off from work burned. Another week goes by after making a few calls and sending emails. Finally, a call out of the blue to install on that day. But only part of the countertops because the "guys at the shop did not polish the bottom of the island. Another week and a half and the island is brought to the house but not the rest of the countertops or the backsplash. After another week, another call out of the blue to come and do the installation. Another excuse; the owner says he left the keys to the truck at home. Another day off work burned! A couple of days later, a call out of the blue asking if anyone would be home for the installation. Finally, the last countertop and backsplash are to be installed. The backsplash sections are not even but supposedly, the wall is not straight so it's the best that can be done. The rounded corners are jagged but "if I use any type of diamond drill, it can be smoothed out." When I started to install the kitchen hardware, the drilled granite access holes are too small, the sink holes do not align with the drilled granite access holes, and the cut-outs for the electrical outlets and boxes are not large enough for the screws to align with the electrical boxes. At this point, the final payment had been submitted and there is no more contact. I texted, emailed, called, and spoke to a person in the office, and no returned phone calls, emails, or text messages. After two weeks, of waiting I am doing the finishing and polishing myself. My wife and I went to Granite Direct fr a piece of granite for a bathroom vanity and after dealing…read morewith Russ we had it all laid out for with Russ, we had the stone marked out for where we wanted it cut so all of the veins would match (keep this part in mind for later). We then spent the next month and a half finding tile colored to match the piece of stone we chose. We finally got the bathroom to the point where we could have the top set and contacted Russ to make the appointment to have them come out and template. The appointment was set for a Thursday, the people showed up on Tuesday. We contacted the store (Russ again) and said it must have been a mix-up due to similar names on the calendar, the appointment for Thursday was still set. My wife took a four day weekend (Thursday and Friday) as long as they were set to come out on Thursday she may as well get some other things done that Friday. They never showed up. Contacted the store again, "They'll definitely be there tomorrow." (Friday) Again... never showed up. Now bear in mind, we understand that a single bathroom vanity isn't a big dollar job but, it's important to US. Saturday we went and talked to Russ (again), and he said he was having issues with his installers (not our problem but, it's turning into our problem) so he'd show up and do it himself, which he did that following Monday after hours. Asked him approximately when the stone would be ready for install and he said he had a huge job coming up and he wanted to get it done before then so, about a week and a half. Got the call that the stone was ready and made the appointment to have it installed, two weeks after the template was measured on a Friday. Installer showed up at the agreed upon time WITHOUT the backsplash. He said he would get the situation resolved and contact us first thing Monday morning. Monday morning came and went and I heard nothing, as I work about a mile down the road, I drove up to the store during my lunch hour to find out why it is so difficult to get a simple vanity installed in a timely manner and wound up being berated by Russ in front of two other employees. I was told "I'm tired of being yelled at over this job..." (pretty sure I hadn't yelled at him once, and he'd definitely know about that) "...we can just come pull the granite and be done with it." Now, please realize, if this had been for me personally, I would have said "Let's go, I'll follow you. Just give me back the money I've already paid you." and I would have found another source for a countertop. But, it's for my wife, and one does not simply toss a month and a half of tile searching with your wife in order to make things easy. It's Wednesday morning now, my wife sends me a picture of the countertop via text(Remember what I asked you to keep in the back of your mind for later?), I look at the picture and the countertop is backwards. The part that we had drawn pictures of, and spent 45 minutes discussing the layout of the grain in relation to the splash... all wrong. Long story short. Find someone who will appreciate your business for what it is, big or small. It's money you earned and want to pay for a service that's deserving. Granite Direct in Kentwood (Grand Rapids), Michigan is Definitely not deserving.

On the bad side, they charged 50% more than the estimate ( given 30 days before by the same fellow who did the work) and the up charge proved to be without basis. I asked why the labor charge doubled from $400 to $800 ? The answer was that the job took longer than estimated. Good answer if true. It wasn't. Then the worker added he estimated 3 hours and they charge $160 an hour and they arrived at 8:30 ( It was actually a little after that). I pulled out my phone and showed him it was 11:40. 3 hours 10 minutes. At $160 an hour the labor charge should not have been more than $508. The worker was red in the face. He was irritated- I guess because he was caught. He fumbled over his words and mumbled that they had an hour travel time. As a rule service companies don't charge for travel, the company builds it into it's hourly rate. But even if I accept that they do charge for travel, my house is 9 miles from the office. A call was made to the main office. The labor charge was reduced by $200. No apology. No admitting a mistake. I didn't bring up the overcharge on the parts. I wanted to but-the worker was getting too rude. In addition to the overcharge, the worker broke a water pipe to a guest house. No one's fault. It was old galvanized pipe. But he didn't fix it or offer to. In fact, he said he could not. He demonstrated complete indifference about leaving the guest house without water. Someone was staying in the house. The pipe needed to be fixed. I went to the local hardware store, bought three fittings and a piece of pex pipe and made the repair. I'm not a plumber or a well worker, just logical. The repair took about 1.5 hours with my travel time included. I think most of the older workers at King Wells must do a good job. The reviews I read before I decided to hire King Wells tend to support that conclusion. The worker at my house was on the younger side. That of course does not excuse the padded labor charge, rudeness or leaving the customer with a broken pipe unresolved. Dave B. Newaygo
