Fortunate for the restaurant, by the time we left the late lunch crowd on a Friday had arrived, and most of the tables were filled. The wait staff is very friendly. They did forget to bring us the credit card & receipt to sign after they took it. They were very busy at that point. Our food came quickly and was hot. Friend had the Thai noodles with chicken and I had the deluxe vegetable vegetables and chicken. Both are a part of the lunch menu. We both chose medium for heat and that was perfect. Our table of four loved each of their food choices. One raved about her Avocado dish, which looked great from the other side of the table and is likely to be a future selection for me, while another loved her curry dish. My Pad See Ew dinner with chicken was spectacular. It was a yummy big dish with egg noodles, spices, and delicious chicken. I asked for "medium" spicing, and they got it right. On Monday night, I ordered takeout through Toast from Silk Elephant. I ordered Massaman curry at medium spice and drunken noodles at medium spice. The curry was fine. The drunken noodles were so insanely hot they were completely inedible. Not "a little spicy." Not "Thai spicy." Genuinely impossible to eat. We could not even give it to the dogs.. Tuesday morning, I used the "Contact Us" form on their website to explain the issue, assuming someone would follow up. No response. By Wednesday, the food had been thrown out. Tonight, my husband reminded me to call. I spoke with a manager and then the owner. I explained calmly that I eat there often, enjoy their food, and that if I had been dining in, I simply would have sent the dish back and asked for it to be remade. Because it was an online order, I didn't have that option. I asked for a very reasonable resolution: a $20 gift certificate or a remake. I fully intended to come back. They refused to do anything. Their explanations: * Drunken noodles "start at medium," so ordering medium spice makes it "double medium," meaning much hotter. This is not communicated anywhere when ordering. Toast has a 24-hour policy for complaints and to return the food. Fair point. I missed that. What I don't accept is a restaurant choosing policy over basic customer service. No offer to remake the dish. No credit. No goodwill gesture for a loyal customer who spends money there regularly and brings friends. I wasn't asking for a refund. I wasn't being hostile. I was asking them to make it right. Instead, they chose not to and lost a customer. I'm super disappointed! Warning others especially if you order online and assume "medium" means medium heat for drunken noodles. Call and return the food right away if you have a problem because "rules are rules!" LOL! The food has great flavor! The portions were huge though. I'll have leftovers for a couple days. I had the sweet chili tofu with med spice. It had a little kick if you don't like spicy food I would definitely recommend getting less spice to it. But it had great flavor and I would definitely eat here again. Lunch prices are reasonable, with plentiful portions. But, even more so, the food itself was just delicious. There were about eight different entrées that I wanted to order, but I narrowed it down to two. Kua Kai + beef: chewy flat noodle (and I love chewy noodles)! A little wider than a pad Thai noodle, and I prefer wider noodle so I'm glad I opted for this one. Excellent flavor w/ bean sprouts, scrambled eggs, everything was delicious. I should have ordered slightly spicier, next time I'll know. Yellow Curry: this was a great curry, slightly more gingery than I prefer. But I do love a good yellow, soupy curry (not too thick). Orange chicken: I did not try this, but my friend says it was delicious. For three lunches, our total was $45, which I think is a pretty good deal anymore! Food was great! And the patio section where we sat was clean and well maintained. They don't have a lot of patio seating (5-6 tables) but it was well shaded with the umbrellas. What we got for food: -Silk Tea: a blend of Thai tea and their lemonade was an interesting but good drink. It reminds me of plum juice. It's tart, sweet, and a bit of spice. -Mini Crab Cakes: great little bites. Full of crab flavor and very little breading just how it is supposed to be. The spicy Mayo dip was actually spicy and creamy. -Kao Soi : creamy, spicy, nutty, and savory. It was a perfect blend of creamy curry that wasn't overpowered with coconut. -Coconut Curry Noodle: spicy, coconuty, sweet, slightly creamy, and added the lime which gave it that tart tang it needed. Noodles in both dishes were cooked perfect to aldente to slightly soft. Overall would come again, the service was great and the food was good. My only down was we called in to make sure if dogs can be on the patio. The person that answered the phone said yes. But when we got there they said it was not allowed. However since we already had our pup there they allowed her and us to stay as long as she was under the table or close to the fence line. This restaurant is such a vibe, very modern and kind of industrial with soft lighting. Service is great, and the food is ordered came out in less than 5 minutes it seemed. The Angry Elephant was great, the mushrooms were delicious, the bell peppers were slightly crunchy and absorbed the flavors well, and the chicken was tender. My husband got the peanut curry with chicken and I picked the pumpkin curry with tofu. The pumpkin curry was fine- spicy, but otherwise a little one dimensional in flavor. I love seeing new restaurants open in Ankeny, so we were excited to try out Silk Elephant- we have actually been here twice now. We enjoy the atmosphere a lot, it is beautifully decorated and the aesthetic is there for sure- if you appreciate good design you will appreciate the interior. Now onto the food, love the authentic Asian flair of this place. The first time I went I had the garlic noodles, and this time side of fried rice and egg rolls. Their apps are wonderful as well- I could make a whole meal from just their different apps. The kids menu although small has a mix of Asian food and traditional chicken nuggets. The kids portions are huge for what they are- see image. The flavor of the food is pretty top notch and their overall menu is extensive, and the portions sizes are pretty huge. My only reason for 4 stars is both times we've been here we've had to flag down our waiters for water refills, and asking for more napkins and condiments- they haven't regularly come back to the table to check on us after delivering food. Ankeny finally has a worthy competitor to Siam Table. I love the large dining area with tables spaced out. Perfect in the age of covid. They also have an outdoor dining area that will open once the weather warms up. Who knew we would get 2 inches of snow on March 31st. The menu is large and can be a little overwhelming. It all sounded so good. So we tried a duck bacon wonton appetizer. Shared a chicken Pad Thai and chicken pineapple curry. Both at a medium spiciness. All three dishes were A-mazing. I am pretty picky about my curries but these guys nailed it. Only complaint is that the medium spiciness was not spicy at all. Have been twice now and tried both avacado scurry and the Red Curry. Both dishes were absolutely delicious. In fact my only complaint is that the avacado curry had too many avacado slices, and I love avacado. When I got the avacado curry I couldn't decide on the protein I wanted so the waitress suggested I split and get the chicken and shrimp and am so glad she brought that up. Wouldn't have even known that was an option. The service was too notch as well. Drinks refilled before they were empty. I do wish the restaurant had more full. I order through toast online and pre pay for an expedited process. My daughter was hassled for payment when the two prior times of picking up our order she only gave our name. After showing receipt and saying that we would not pay twice, they forgot to give us our Thai iced tea and were unprofessional and dismissive over their mistakes upon needing to drive back to retrieve the drink.
