4.5 stars, rounding up as usual. Silk Road has a little bit of a thrift store vibe from the outside, but I couldn't be more wrong. What a great, and occasionally strange collection of goods, mostly clothes and jewelry. First I'll note that they carry Jess and Jane apparel, a favorite of The Wife. They also carry several Merrill shoes, which our family loves. There's a Buddhist influence as well, like one of those ubiquitous Nepalese stores, with all the jewelry and scarves you'd expect with that. And men's clothes too! Very colorful stuff. Clothes shopping for a specific purpose is challenging for me and not often fun. I discovered Silk Moon last year on a trip to the area and they made all the difference. They have a lovely selection of clothes, shoes, and accessories, but what sets Silk Moon apart is the wonderful staff. I explained the occassion for which I was buying clothes and with their knowledge of the inventory they began pulling out pieces for me to try. When asked, they provided opinions and I was able to find things I loved. This year on my visit in the area I made a point to go back to Silk Moon, since I have an upcoming trip and needed some things. Maeve was the best! She helped me find what I needed and I had a marvelous time. The encouragement and support received from the entire staff is priceless. I recently bought hiking shoes for an upcoming trip, and Andrea, by using the store's stretcher actually went ahead and broke them in for me. I could never have had them so ready in the three weeks before my departure, but through a series of me wearing them, and then reporting back on the specifics of the fit, (which was reasonably comfortable to start with which is why I purchased them) she was able to make a few adjustments so they were just perfect. A family member told me about this store on Main Street in downtown Sebastopol that sells Eangee lamps. So when I was in town, off I went to Silk Moon. Eangee lamps are beautiful hand crafted lamps by artisans made from renewable and/or recyclable materials. Silk Moon had a small inventory of Eangee lighting products. They were beautifully displayed throughout the store. Since I have never been here before, I had no clue what they sold besides the lamps. As I walked into the store from the back parking lot entry, it brought me to the shoe area. They have a variety of women's designer quality comfort shoes ranging from stylish dress heels, summer sandals, and athletic shoes. They also carry women's clothes, some men's clothes, hand crafted jewelry (affordable prices--I spyed copper hammered hoop earrings for $19), stationary, notions, hats (men and women), and small trinkets & knickknacks. Not everything in the store was my style though. But that is the great thing about this store; it has a diverse inventory of merchandise. read more

This boutique-y clothing store in Sebastopol reminded me of the kind of place my grandmother would bring me when I was a little girl - not in a bad way - my father's mother was always well-dressed and fashionable, and she took my sister and I shopping with her at places like Chico's and cute little stores, just like Silk Moon Textile Arts. I walked around the store, not really finding anything but enjoying my browsing. They had a clearance rack in the back but items on that rack were still pretty expensive. A lady was sitting at a desk in the back, helping a girl with shoe selections. They had a lot of cute shoes. I'm more of a sock person though! I love fun, funky socks - and these they had a lot of fun. Really cute designs, including lots of ones with cat pictures, for less than $10 each. Another woman acknowledged me at the front desk as I left. A small, sparkly bracelet caught my eye, but I ended up leaving without making any purchases. read more

What a wonderful store. Why can't I find anything like this back home? Such friendly service. The whole shopping experience was just so much fun! I hate, and I do mean hate shoe shopping. I just feel like I dropped into a portal of some kind and found shoe heaven when I came to this place. Comfort and style! And real service with a genuineness that can't be beat. This place was the best shoe buying experience I've ever had. But they have so much more. Beautiful clothes and fun whimsical items like gorgeous kites. I could get lost in this store and not come out for awhile. Instead both my fiancé and found one thing we really liked and decided to keep the rest of exploring for another time. I think because we both knew we could potentially spend way too much money in that place. It hit all the right points for to want to stay. I had an awkward experience last time I shopped at this store and I haven't been back. I visited the store infrequently since I live in SF, so I'm only in Sebastopol once in a while. While I'm there I love to shop at Sebastopol's small independent businesses. Anyway, last time I was at silk moon, I was buying a scarf for my mom when the salesperson spent about 10 minutes double checking the scarf's price tag against similar items, apparently to see if I had switched tags. I wonder how many customers are treated like thieves for no reason. I really don't know what I did to spark her distrust in me as a person. Maybe just because I'm under 50?? Luckily there are still many other great places to shop in Sebastopol. read more

Lovely independent clothing and shoe store in Sebastopol. It's predominantly a woman's store but they do have a small men's section. I like the clothing selection and almost always find something. My partner and I wandered in here after shopping nearby. My partner believes strongly in shipping local and has been needing to shop for a new wardrobe for a while, so he asked one of the women working if they had a couple different men's items. She said no, and finally admitted that they didn't have much in the way of menswear. He decided to buy a couple of their pairs of (overpriced) socks, and when we were checking out the woman suggested snidely that he "try the hardware store" for pants, which seemed to be a crack about his weight. This place is very crunchy/yuppy/artsy... And I mean that in the best of ways! Beautiful clothing and scarves. Cute hates. Great shoe and boot collection they even have great baby and kids shoes. Can't go wrong here, this is a small business (as in go in and meet the owner)that travels Asia and gathers amazing silk products. The store helps support women in other countries. Do not shop at this clothing store in Sebastopol! You will never go anywhere else if you do. Their clothing is primarily natural fabrics, breathable, and, some of it is made in the US. You can browse as much as you like without intrusive questions from the sales staff. It is a relaxing refreshing way to shop--in person--for quality clothes at fair to high prices. I have purcased three diffferent items of clothing on different occasions from this store. They are cute on the hanger, they look nice when you try them on, but wash them once and they lose their shape and look like they came from the Goodwill.
