Someone once said that, "you get what you give", so I decided to be cheerful when I went to the Goodwill in Sebastopol today. I had tried to go Monday and Tuesday (but they are closed), so I tried again today. Yippee! Open (Wednesday). My first impression was that it didn't look like there was much here, but I looked deeper and treasures started to pop up everywhere. Maybe not for resellers, but for the average person yes. I took some photos to show you. I had fun. The prices are as you would expect, not high. The staff was nice. The other customers were pleasant. Everything was sorted and signed. I got a cool little Japanese bowl, a cool pink glass, and some hooks for my studio. read more

I happened to stop into the Sebastopol Goodwill and although I found a couple of things that I really liked the 2 female staff I spoke with were extremely unpleasant. Unhelpful when asked a simple question, snarky when they answered a question and seemed very unhappy and downright grinchy at the payment desk. I made a casual comment about something I was buying and the reply I got was... some kind of "I'm gritting my teeth, I hate all the customers but I'm forced to be pleasant. I HAVE to seem pleasant but really FU" reply. Very disturbing. I've enjoyed browsing Goodwill for many years and never had a bad experience with the staff until now. These two women were SO unnecessarily unpleasant and offensive. Maybe they were having a bad day? Maybe they got into a spat with each other? I worked at a busy pediatric front desk, often with parents who were impatient and worried so I know it can be difficult but we would never have gotten away with such attitude towards the people we were serving. On the plus side, the male staff who DID answer my question was very helpful and nice UNTIL the snarky one took over and basically said the same thing he had said. Ack! Will I go back? Maybe, but there are other shops with better staff where I wouldn't feel like a burden on their day. read more

This review is for the donation process only. We've had past experiences with GW where we brought furniture that they weren't accepting (although the website stated otherwise) and had to bring it all back home. Having learned that lesson we called ahead of time and asked what they were and weren't accepting. During this time many GW are at capacity for certain items and in need of others. Staff was professional and friendly over the phone and told me which items they could accept. So when I arrived - I let the person know that I had called ahead to confirm the items. This made the process easy and seamless. The only slight negative is that they didn't ask if I wanted a receipt for tax purposes. Not sure why but Salvation Army always asks. Other than than this I think people will have a good donation experience as long as they verify ahead of time. This also cuts down on GW parking lots becoming a dumping ground of unacceptable items as I've seen in the past read more

Literally the best Goodwill in terms of clothing in Sonoma county. There are so many unique pieces of clothing here! Some are handmade and some are from chain stores. They also have some cool frames and paintings for sale. Really fun store! Sadly no bathroom but the Barlow nearby has one. Parking is neutral, I've never had trouble finding a spot but the parking lot is small. Donating is easy and basically a drive through. People at checkout aren't super friendly but it's not the end of the world. read more

Goodwill here is mostly clothes, household wares, books, small odds & ends. no large furniture pieces seen. re-entry to highway 12 is problematic if traffic is heavy. lots of parking available. read more

Clothes were overpriced for a thrift store and comparable to prices at Ross. Staff seemed distracted, but nice. Everything was very neatly organized, but mostly women's clothing. I found a cute cup for $1. Good store for kitchen stuff. read more

A small store (compared to most I visit) but I found a couple useful items, aside from what I was looking for there. They do things a little differently here than what I'm used to. They price their items by rack. So all items "here" are $5.99, all those items are $3.99, etc., instead of having tags on each individual item different colors and different prices. The thrift option is needed in this area. Please shop from and donate to your local area thrift stores. read more

For those of you who don't know, Goodwill has raised all their prices and also stopped doing sales. Now dresses and pants start at $10, all tops start at $7, etc. The prices are getting closer to that of stores like Marshall's or TJ Maxx, except at Goodwill there's a good chance you'll get your clothes home to end up finding stains that you hadn't noticed in their bad lighting. Still, I would give a better review if it weren't for the fact that, for some inconceivable reason, Redwood Empire only hires the most sour-faced cashiers. Mendy at this one is sooo grumpy and lurches around muttering curmudgeonly invectives under her breath. ( Although she's not quite as bad as the actual troll-woman who works at the Stony Point Goodwill. I won't mention her by name for fear of her manifesting in my dreams like a nightmarish Freddy Krouger-esque vision with sharpened plastic hangers for fingers. ) read more

Helpful staff, easy donation process. This is a busy store, so it's worth checking back frequently if you need something specific.

I really like this thrift store and visit regularly (monthly) over the alst few years. Very good prices and specials. The facility is large and has good inventory. The BOOKS are really good here. I have found many treasures on the book shelves. The employees have been very friendly. I donate a good amount of my giving to this location. Heading east after leaving the store is a bit tricky... if you go out the back and through the deli parking lot next door you will be closer to the middle turn lane :) read more

Good stuff but the employees are EXTREMELY rude. Compared to other goodwills, this one is not welcoming at all and sense negative energy.

I don't shop here often but I do drop off giveaway. People in the back are often super rude and bossy. Makes the effort feel unwelcome. I try to bring my giveaway elsewhere if I can. read more

Always loved finding great deals at goodwill and loved their sales! Well, all that is now a thing of the past.... EVERYTHING is a set price $7 for a Hanes t-shirt that has been well loved is absurd.... I found a pair of pants that I was looking for but when I learned that their price was equivalent to the price at Ross and not reflective of a second hand store I decided to go elsewhere and won't be returning. Pulled up the other day to drop off some donations. I set an item down on the ramp and turned to walk back to my truck for more stuff and the donation manager yelled at me "Hey, you can't set your stuff down there! You have to put it in this shopping cart." Which was about 2' away, she just didnt want to pick it up herself... Well, the cart was full and I told her so and she said to set it on top and they would swap out the carts as I filled them up. I explained I had a lot of items in the back of the truck, could I borrow a shopping cart? Nope, I would have to move my truck closer. Ok... so I did that and slowly started taking things out of my truck. Slowly, because I had to get in the back of it so I could reach things. Climbing in and out of my truck bed is hard, it's a tall truck and I had to do it like 10 times... As I was bringing things to her, she kept saying "Ma'am, we don't take this... or we don't take that..." and it was normal stuff, like sporting equipment or camping gear... I was getting pretty frustrated. What a pain in the butt. They barely took anything. It was a waste of my time. Next time I will just stick it on the curb with a free sign. read more

I wanted to update my review. I have gone back to this goodwill recently multiple times and the woman I complained about in the past has since become much nicer. I am very grateful because it's my local goodwill and I'd like to support Sebastopol. However I wish the kids section were better. The shoes are usually great but the kids clothes are usually not and very limited. But I was pleasantly surprised that the staff has become much friendlier. read more

I have been to Goodwill store in Sebastopol several times without issues except their prices keep increasing. I brought some clothes (in good shape) and dishes etc. Figuring folks affected by floods could use some of these items. The woman in the area for drop-offs was not only unpleasant but rude. I am donating quality items hopefully to be used for a good purpose, I don't appreciate being treated this way. I will never go to that store again. read more

Surprisingly decent stuff here. I found some nice costume jewelry and numerous cotton tops, and even a red leather jacket, yay!! I was passing through en route to Sonoma, and stopped here for some fun bargain hunting. Prices are decent, and there is a good selection of clothes. I really appreciated the clothes being sorted by size and also type. Jackets were plentiful, and lots of nice leather jackets there from $15 to $30. Mine was $15, real bargain. Shorts for men and women are $5, and womens tops are $4 to $6 each unless marked higher. Most necklaces are $4. Nice selection of glass ware as well. They had LOTS of vinyl records for the collector! Not my thing, but you could spend a day here looking at these! Park across the street - parking is easy in Sebastopol. read more

For those of you who don't know, Goodwill gets all the stuff they sell for free as donations, and each Goodwill Franchise pays very little in taxes / business license, rent, and does not have to collect, calculate and remit sales tax, etc. But Goodwill has raised all their prices and also stopped doing sales. Also by not putting tags on some stuff, Goodwill has reduced the amount of effort it takes their staff to put things out for sale. But then some stuff will have high price tags like "special find, $25" or something like that. But run of the mill stuff is all just a set price, for example all unmarked / un-price-tagged dinner plates are $2 each, all unmarked / un-price-tagged pots and pans are all $4 each, etc. and there's a little problem with that "new" pricing system... the staff will sometimes accuse you of removing the price tag (even though they never put one on the item), or tell you that something is priced more because it is bigger, thicker, etc. even though it is supposed to be the unmarked / un-price-tagged general price for run of the mill stuff. So, it can be a pain to shop there now. And the staff should sure as hell smile more and be more respectful and kind and helpful and grateful to customers... not rude, after all they all get to go out back and smoke more, now that there's less effort going into pricing each item. And now here's something nice to say: LIKE MANY WOMEN, I LOVE SHOES, so I always buy shoes, good decent shoes for a pretty "ok" price each and every time I shop at the Sebastopol Goodwill, and I actually like the fact that all the unmarked / un-price-tagged run of the mill shoes are all a set price even shoes for my petite narrow feet. read more

I would consider myself a regular and have been coming to this store since moving to Sebastopol over 10 years ago. Each Goodwill store, seems to have one department in which it excels over the others. You can usually trace this back to a manager or salesperson, who has a particular interest, even a love, of the items in that particular department. This store has a well rounded selection in women's clothing and housewares, while excelling in books, linens and women's jackets. Due to space, there is little to no furniture or similarly large items, and I wish there was more wall decor (posters, framed paintings and prints, empty frames, decorative shelving, etc.) but that's just me. As the gentleman stated below, the book selection is wonderful and I usually find a DVD or CD to take home as well. In fact, I can't remember the last time I walked out empty handed! Even if I didn't find what I was hoping to, I usually find another item "too good to pass up", that turns out to be just what I needed...for that unfinished project, for an upcoming weekend outing, or just a special, "I saw this and thought of you right away!" surprise gift for someone. I have always found the staff very helpful, and having worked retail myself for many years, realize that anyone can have a bad day. That being said, nobody should have rude, condescending, apathetic or ignorant salespeople, ruin their shopping experience. I hold management responsible for such people, since they hire and (supposedly), train their staff. I believe I know which salesperson, the woman earlier referenced as being unhelpful, rude etc., is. And I have sometimes noticed her stoic countenance as well. But while she may seem gruff on the outside, when I engage her in conversation or with a question, she has always been friendly and helpful. So give this store a visit and I doubt you will be disappointed, nor walk out without a treasure. read more

Goodwill prices are too high for used items. When I shop used, I want to feel I got a really good deal. I guess Goodwill does a lot of charitable things, but I'm not aware what they are, and I still don't think things should be overpriced. read more
