This is one of my go to Thai places in Charlottesville, however I do have mixed feelings about this place as the staff consistently messes up my order every time I come. The service ranges from being fast to serving everybody's dishes at random times, sometimes even after everybody else is already finished. Silk Thai only does pick up now since they no longer have a delivery person. Their pick up service is similarly inconsistent, once when calling in an order at 7 they said they were unable to fulfill the order as it was too late, they close at 9:30. They also tend to mess up orders on this one too, thus I would recommend confirming your order when calling in. However with that being said, their food is good. My go to dish is their crispy duck drunken noodles, their duck is very flavorful and their drunken noodles are quite spicy. Their panang curry and Thai tea is also very good. Definitely would not recommend getting their pad Thai as it runs on the blander side. read more

WOW. I've had my share of Thai food, but when it comes to pad see ew, this place definitely takes the cake. Pad see ew is one of my favorite meals, and this is the first place that has offered crispy duck with it. It was absolutely incredible. I asked for a level 2 for the spiciness and it was perfect. The flavors were amazing and the noodles were so tender and delicious. The duck was so crispy and yummy, I could eat it everyday. The ambiance is so cute and inviting, and the service was very quick. Solidly okay thai food in Charlottesville. I mostly go for the convenience factor since I live close-by. Their crispy duck is really good and the meat is generally well cooked. The noodles, however, are usually a bit overdone. The flavors are always slightly off, missing something, maybe it's acidity. This is a good thai place in cville. They have a variety of options for everyone from curries to pad thai. I usually do takeout from this place. The atmosphere is strange inside with random objects on the walls but it is clean and not too noisy. You have to get the thai iced tea as it's amazing. My palette entered a flavor bomb of tasty Thai concoctions that teased my mind with curiosity: "If this is what the soup tastes like, what about every other thing on this menu??" I opted for a chicken curry with broccoli dish and was not disappointed. The only thing that disappointed me was the fact that I was too full to finish it and try something else. However, they have a large menu, so I probably need to go back at least a dozen more times to sample everything I missed on the first go. The service was adequate, and the environment was cool...Somewhat modern with a bar, dining room, and cute outdoor space...but did I mention that soup? Was visiting Charlottesville over Memorial Day Weekend and found this lovely restaurant. It hosts a cozy decor and an incredibly attentive staff. The food came out quickly and everything seemed great quality and fresh. The Pad See Ew with crispy duck was fantastic as was the Shrimp and Pineapple Curry. The papaya salad had a great spicy kick. Soup was overly salty, simple, and lacked aromatics. There were other signs of apathy besides the food. Napkins were never provided until asked. Front door is broken and needs fixing. If you enjoy good Thai food, Charlottesville has a pretty good choosing. Silk has become my personal favorite. Located on Fontaine, in what was the old Thai '99 building. Their quirky decor is fantastically cheesy. They have a nice, quaint outdoor seating area, an indoor waiting area, and a decent bar, but I'm not sure that people go there to drink. The staff is very friendly. As far as food, they have all the Thai soups, curry, and noodle dishes, as well as normal appetizers. My personal recommendations are the Sum Tum (green papaya salad), and Khao Soi (northern Thai coconut curry noodle soup with chicken). Maybe get yourself some Tom Kha Gai, and if in season, don't miss out on the mango sticky rice. Pricing is reasonable for the bounty of food you receive. Treat yourself to a great meal. read more

I was always on the fence about this place, but my most recent visit helped me decide to not really want to come back. Overall, their food, service, and price just don't add up to a worthwhile experience. Came here with a group of 8 and was seated pretty quickly, but then we were left waiting pretty long for water. Same thing happened for ordering our food and then receiving it too. Furthermore, after waiting for about 30 minutes for our food, one of our friends was forgotten and had to wait an extra 10 minutes for his food, which he even had to get packed to-go in order to make a prior engagement. All of our food was at least cooked correctly in terms of what we ordered and the spice level. The taste wasn't anything out of this world though, and all of our noodles were soggy. We all agreed that they likely made a huge batch of noodles and split it up for our orders since many of us ordered pad see ew and pad Thai. Overall, it was pretty disappointing, especially having to wait so long for the food. I would have been more understanding of the wait if the quality of the food was better or even if the wait staff gave us a heads up and asked us to be patient. I'm not usually too harsh with my reviews but with all of these things taken into consideration, I think there are better places to go if you want thai food. read more

Silk Thai provides an authentic experience in Charlottesville. Upon entering there is a very archaic furniture and structure. Aside from the over ambience I was a little disappointed with the service. I ordered the Panang curry and the other two in my party ordered drunken noodles. The drunken noodles came out with in 10 minutes where as my order took 20 minutes. The noodles got very cold by the time we started eating. The spice level in the noodles was also very misleading for a two level spice. It was almost a chore to finish. If your looking for a unique dining experience this is a place to try, however don't expect stellar service. read more

This place was delicious, and this is from someone who's eaten a lot of Thai food in areas well-known for Asian cuisine. The portions are large and the food flavorful and not overly sweet, which some American Thai places are. The Silk calamari is tasty and crisp, if not a tad oily. They do fried foods very well--the eggplant basil was amazing and so was the crispy duck in the pad see ew. Eggplant basil was crisp on the outside but tender inside and came with a wonderfully savory sauce. Pad see ew had a good charred wok flavor, and the crispy duck was phenomenal. The green curry was creamy and good. Lastly, the tom sum (papaya salad) was as good as any I've had at proper Isaan/Northern Thai places. It was fresh and had the right balance of flavors--funky, savory, sour, spicy, and sweet. This place far exceeded expectations! read more

The renovation of this restaurant is by far the most exciting thing that has happened to that area on JPA. By no means is it the best Thai place in Charlottesville but it's definitely a huge step up. I've ordered from them for delivery and takeout. The place is really cute and inviting. They deliver within a 2 mile radius and you have to order at least 20 dollars worth of food. Definitely specify how spicy you want your food or else it may be spicier than you'd like. Their drunken noodles and Thai iced tea are probably my favorite. They're flavorful and chewy. The chef fried rice and the pad thai are also pretty good. They taste great and are well seasoned. I've also tried their crab fried rice. I was pretty disappointed with it because it felt like they just threw on the crab meat. My biggest gripe is probably the vegetables in their fried rice-- the onions in the chef fried rice were way too big, the cucumbers were coarse, and I wasn't a big fan of the cherry tomatoes inside. I've noticed since their opening, their portions have shrunken a bit and I was quite disappointed because their large portions were what kept me going back to them instead of other Thai places. read more

The food was so good the first time I went here that it prompted me to go back 3 additional times within the next week. So I've learned a lot about this place now and I'm going to break it all down for you! Food: my first time here I ordered the green curry and absolutely fell in love with it. Best green curry I've ever had, 5 stars no question about it! Portions were large enough that even my bottomless-stomach date had nothing to complain about. HOWEVER, on subsequent visits, I found the food to be inconsistently spicy. Drunken noodles on one day would be moderately spicy, but on the very next day the noodles were firetruck red and unbearably spicy. Same with the green curry though to a lesser extent. So my suggestion is either specify the level of spice you desire or order something not spicy if you don't want to try your luck (the pad thai is good)! Also get yourself a Thai iced tea when you're there. They are huge and delicious and everyone gets one. I've seen people go just for the iced tea. Service: I was less impressed with the service on my first visit. It was a weekend night within a week of their grand opening and there were tons of people. It took us 40 mins to get a table and then the food was really slow to come out. Also they were SO disorganized. Three waiters came by to take our orders after we had already placed our order, and then we watched one waiter give our appetizer to a table that ordered way after us. They apologized for this and gave us a complementary dessert at the end but it seemed like an easily avoidable situation with some communication and organization in the back. But I will say that this was in their very early days of opening so I suspect it will get better. After that I went on a weekday to get a better idea of the service when it's not completely chaotic with a million guests. The servers were super nice as usual and it was much more organized. So theres a few lessons learned from this: give them a few weeks to figure out the kinks, go on a weekday, or order takeout on the weekend (though plan for the takeout to take longer on weekends when they're busy). Miscellaneous information: they deliver for free within 2 miles. Price is reasonable ~$10-15 for an entree. Sitting in the back room is more comfortable; there's a glass table in the front that looks really cute but the base of it makes it uncomfortable to sit and eat on because you have no where to put your legs. Overall: Honestly I was wavering between 3 and 4 stars, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt since they're new and I think they'll improve with a little more time. I will definitely be back frequently for takeout and on weekdays when I'm looking for somewhere convenient to eat! read more

After a fun but tiring day at the fields where the sun rays bear down on your back, stumble into Silk Thai--a nook in the college scene at UVA. A stone's throw away from the dorms and across the street from the Crossroads apartment complex off of JPA, Silk Thai is so conveniently located that the place is filled with everyone, year long round, sporting UVA gear--sweatshirts, t-shirts, baseball caps. Amongst the bustle, you may sit down on a cute, cushioned wooden chair in the cozy waiting area to catch your breath. Soon enough, though, you'll be seated within minutes. The eclectic atmosphere is enhanced by the non-uniform coloring of the walls, a collage of hanging decorations, and an assortment of different sets of what appears to be office chairs. Despite the seemingly hodge-podge appearance, it's a local favorite for good reasons. Consistently offering a refuge from the college dining hall while providing affordable, high quality food, Silk Thai ranks as the top one Thai place to eat in the Charlottesville area. The Thai tea is lauded as a perfectly balanced refreshment. Cooling but not too diluted by the ice cubes, the drink had the stronger flavor of tea but was topped with whip cream to provide an additional sweet taste. Rather than having overly bright and borderline fluorescent hues of orange created by artificial coloring present in most Thai teas, Silk Thai offers a darker and richer beverage that is perfectly paired with the spicy kickers on their menu. Their menu has all the standard Thai dishes: Drunken Noodles, Green Curry, Pad See Ew, Pad Thai, Tom Yum Soup. But perhaps its greatest strength is the regional dishes included on the menu. Khao Soi, a northern Thai dish, offers a curry based soup with a spicy kick. A bit thick and creamy, the soup is a filling and hearty meal. The combination of chewy, wide noodles and crunchy, dry noodles offers a texture rich dish. The heavy soup is complemented by the fresh cilantro and lime. The garnishers are fresh red onions and pickled cabbage. However, they are a bit dry where the onions taste slightly withered and bitter and the pickled cabbage has little tang and juice. The abundance of onions are placed at the top, unmixed. So it is very easy to remove if you don't want them. At the price of only $12.95, the meal had a large enough portion to provide two meals where the servers are more than happy to provide a container to help pack away leftovers. If you want friendly service and good food, look elsewhere. I've been to nearly every Thai restaurant in the Charlottesville / Waynesboro area, and while I don't like to leave negative reviews, I feel a responsibility to warn folks when something is truly dreadful. When I go to a new-to-me Thai restaurant, I order Spring / Summer rolls (whatever is fresh to them as opposed to fried), Tom Ka Ga soup and red curry. The Summer rolls were beautiful to look at. The sauce was HOT. Not spicy hot, but heated hotter than the soup. And you are supposed to put this on a fresh roll that has lettuce? The quantity of the sauce was enough for ONE of the four rolls. I asked for a box for the rest of them, which never came. The soup was dreadful. The flavor was just off; my palate is not sophisticated enough to distinguish the particular seasoning, but it was just not right. Normally Tom Ka Ga is slightly sweet, and very creamy. This was neither. There were bits of cardboard-textured planks in the soup I later determined to be the chicken. Very dry and hard - unable to bite into, let alone chew. I gave up about 1/4 of the way through the soup. And still no box. So I got up to leave, and told the person at the cash register I was just going to leave, and why. "Well you have to pay for the food" was the only response. So very disappointed. I wasn't even able to bring home my left overs so someone else could have the "experience". So, my suggestion is: if you want a mediocre at best Thai restaurant in Charlottesville, go soon. I really don't expect them to last very long. read more

Wow! What an improvement! Nothing against the old Thai '99, but this was a much appreciated upgrade. The interior is freshened up - new paint, decor, tables and chairs, and refinished floors. Staff were beyond friendly, welcoming, and attentive. I would come back just for that experience alone. The food is improved as well. The Silk Calamari were freshly made, large, well coated with crispy panko, and served with a not-too-sweet dipping sauce. Drunken Noodles were spicy, very flavorful, and included a good amount of veggies. The Panang Curry with veggies was so much more than the usual bowl of sauce in which one typically must fish around for food. Instead, the plate was filled with lots of vegetables. The panang sauce was beautifully complex. We were even surprised with a complimentary tiramisu for dessert (also delicious). From service to food, this is a hit. Big fan of Thai '99, the old restaurant in this building, & was excited that the owner/chef gave Silk Thai his blessing as he was heading toward his retirement. The renovations are very nice & tasteful, elevating the space a good deal, but could still be considered casual for the family or elegant enough for a nice date. To the food... duck wrap appetizer was absolutely fantastic. Tom Yum soup was better than average, not quite as good as Thai '99, but their version was fit for the gods. Pad Prik Khing was ridiculously delicious & Pad See Ew was very good. I hear the chef specializes in eastern Thai food & curries, so I plan to visit very frequently and try those next! read more

Sadly, Thai 99 is no more. An apt replacement is Silk Thai. Eddie, the previous Thai 99 owner was there and introduced me and my wife to the new owner. Right away I can tell this will be a warm neighborhood staple. I got the Kao Soi Chicken, a warm curry soup with noodles, a crispy nest of fried egg noodle, chicken, and the most delicious pickled mustard greens that balanced the curry. Would recommend during this cold January. My wife got the Tom Yum noodle soup. Large portion and welcome spicy heat. They were out of a couple salads during their soft opening, however we got and order of the Larb Gai and a Duck Roll. Spoiler alert: the duck roll won this battle. We were also treated to a deconstructed banana split spread that featured vanilla ice cream and some fried banana spring rolls drizzled in chocolate and honey by the owner "because we had to wait for our food". Seriously, no wait at all!!! Very generous. Cannot wait until they been open a few months and we've had a chance to try more things. read more

Unfortunately, we didnt find the food nearly as tasty as other reviewers and next time we'll opt for another one of Cville's thai restaurants. Spring rolls: Shrimp were tiny and uncleaned. Sauce was basically a paste. We didn't enjoy the taste. Silk Calamari: All the breading had completely come apart from the calamari. It looked like someone intentionally took a scoop of the oily breading and put it in the side of the delivery box. The pictures from the customers who dined-in looked a lot better so maybe it's just something to avoid for delivery. Vegetable Drunken Noodles: I enjoyed the drunken noodles and it had plenty of vegetables. However, the pieces of tofu were too large and no flavor. Overall: 2.5 read more
