Chiricahua National Monument - Fungus on a tree

Chiricahua National Monument

Fee free park!…read more Beautiful scenic drive, reminiscent of Bryce Canyon and the red hoodoos they have there. I'm insane and did the Big Loop (~13.5 miles, ~4.5hrs). Also camped at Bonita Campground. When I visited, they have a shuttle on Saturdays and Sundays (~9am departure) to so you can do a point to point (one way) decline hike back to your car. Rangers very friendly!

I've been here twice and each time I have visited, it is mesmerizing and I don't want to leave!…read more This place is famous for their hoodoos and amazing rock formations that will leave you speechless and in awe! And while this place is a national monument, one thing our government could do instead of all the other nonsense going on is to upgrade this place to a national park. We stopped in here after spending time at Kartchner Caverns and today the scenic drive beyond the campground was closed because of the rain and snow that came down steadily last night. And because of this and due to the amount of time we had, we did a shorter walk along the Silver Spur Meadow. This trail is very easy, well shaded and what a beautiful place to view birds! I think may have seen 15 or more species in just the short walk we did here today. I was also here about 2 years ago and did the Echo Canyon Trail to the Grotto and that was such a lovely easy hike with all sorts of cool rock formations and I enjoyed climbing around. Id like to come back and do a more strenuous hike and when I get a chance, will come back and do the Heart of the Rocks trail! Visitor center is very cool with a really nice gift shop, museum, bathrooms and very informative rangers. Parking lot can be a bit tight but more parking available down the road. I was able to get a fun stuffed sandhill crane! I could spend a lot more time here and just love this place! Great place to get a dose of nature and love how the air feels at close to 5500 feet!

Gernimo Trail National Scenic Byway Visitors Center - Excellent information about the "Jornado Del Muerto"!

On the main one-way street [Broadway] through downtown, a sign identifies where to find the public…read morelibrary--an easy block West on Foch Street. Much to my surprise, this fine albeit small branch is located within a very good visitors center, which also includes a museum/information on "Spaceport America", most closely identified with Sir Richard Branson & space tourism. Both the library and the visitors center were very capably handled by two extremely knowledgeable women, each dedicated to bringing the best information & services to any curious individuals who enter. Besides a plethora of printed documents in all forms from newspapers to postcards to maps to fliers, she answered all my queries pertaining to this area, notably "Why would any traveler a hundred years and more before venture away from the reliable freshwater source of the exotic Rio Grande/Rio Bravo by veering Northeast through the forbidding/water-less "Jornada Del Mureto" ("Journey of Death")? [To avoid the inevitable/agonizing pre-(motor)vehicle route over a very rough but relatively "flat" route.] My wife & I walked further inside, to the "Spaceport America" information/museum, stopping briefly to observe an appealing hands-on display/command module for children. Far more interesting were hands-on displays concerning gyroscope effects and keeping your balance/center-of-gravity, both very challenging for astronauts, much less for us non-astronauts!

Possibly the best National Historic Site I've been to in a very long time…read more - Great mile and half trail to access the fort. There is also an ADA road access option but I'd recommend the trail unless you can't make the hike. It's a fairly easy trail. Going back to the trailhead, take the Overlook Ridge trail located north of the visitor center. It affords better views of the site. - Lots of informative signs along the trail and at the fort describing the history (which is sordid - Cochise was framed!). - Also lots of signs identifying the various plants. - Visitor center has a great collection of artifacts and especially, old photos. - The fort itself is very interesting - many buildings (or rather, the remains of buildings) to explore. Don't forget to walk up the short trail on the west side to see the original fort.

This is certainly an interesting set up for a national historic site. You drive partially on a dirt…read moreroad and then park and set out on a 1.5 mile hike with placards and historic points of interest along the way. Make sure to bring water! If you have a disability, you can skip the hike and drive in, but you have to make prior arrangements so they can open the road for you. It's due to the road crossing sensitive ecological areas so they want to limit traffic. Since I visited in winter, a lot of the critters were hibernating/less active, so I didn't see any wildlife. The hike was ok. Sometimes the trail was narrow and so you were brushing up against grass. There's no water on the trail until the visitor center so make sure you bring water. There's a spring along the way (0.25 miles from the visitor center) but it's not treated and not recommended to drink from it. The ruins are not going to be restored, rather they put concrete/plaster over it to preserve them. There's some exhibits in the visitor center explaining things, but the volunteer and rangers are better sources of information. Otherwise I wish that there were more details. There's a small gift shop as well. Restrooms are at the trailhead and at the visitor center.
