Much to my surprise, this fine albeit small branch is located within a very good visitors center, which also includes a museum/information on "Spaceport America", most closely identified with Sir Richard Branson & space tourism. Both the library and the visitors center were very capably handled by two extremely knowledgeable women, each dedicated to bringing the best information & services to any curious individuals who enter. Besides a plethora of printed documents in all forms from newspapers to postcards to maps to fliers, she answered all my queries pertaining to this area, notably "Why would any traveler a hundred years and more before venture away from the reliable freshwater source of the exotic Rio Grande/Rio Bravo by veering Northeast through the forbidding/water-less "Jornada Del Mureto" ("Journey of Death")? [To avoid the inevitable/agonizing pre-(motor)vehicle route over a very rough but relatively "flat" route.] My wife & I walked further inside, to the "Spaceport America" information/museum, stopping briefly to observe an appealing hands-on display/command module for children. Far more interesting were hands-on displays concerning gyroscope effects and keeping your balance/center-of-gravity, both very challenging for astronauts, much less for us non-astronauts!

The Very Large Array is one of those must-see sites if you have a bit of scientific curiosity. If it is a visitors center, a welcome center I believe speaking to people is the best tool you have to help visitors and to engage in conversation. It was odd, awkward and uncomfortable even my 14 year old mentioned how rude it was to not speak to us. To welcome people involves speaking.

I would say start with the Visitor center, they provide maps, insight on wild life, environment & safety tips. They offer free guided tours at 7:30am daily & you can rent sleds to use on the dunes! Entrance is $25 p/car, valid for 7 days. The map clearly indicates the trails/hikes, i attempted all, but gave up half way due to the heat, it really was difficult to handle. The trails are easy to walk, great for pictures & do keep an eye for animal paw prints on sand. The picnic area features shade, tables, and grills, might be nice in winter, or sunset. Despite the heat i genuinely enjoyed the experience, and would highly recommend! Preparation: take plenty of water, food, snacks. Theres a tiny gift shop, but NO restaurants onsite. I repeat- bring plenty of water #1 priority

White Sands is worth the visit…read more Wasn't sure what to expect, But it was definitely a fun stop on a road trip. Be sure to bring a sled. I think they may offer rentals, but didn't see. They do have sled waxing though, which will definitely help We found the biggest sand dune, with the steepest way down. I'm still covered in sand, in places I didn't know sand could get into

Roosevelt, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico was created to protect, restore, and provide a vital migratory stopover for sandhill cranes, geese, and ducks. Spanning 57,331 acres (30 000 are wilderness), the area has a deep history, having been a home to the Piro people and later named for the Apache tribes that used the riverside forest. The name means "woodland of the Apache" in Spanish, acknowledging the region's historical use by Prior to the 1600s, the Piro people lived in the area, with archeological sites like Qualu indicating substantial early settlements. The area was part of the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (Royal Road of the Interior Land), with Spanish caravans passing through the vicinity. It's not too far from the Salinas missions. The refuge was officially established in 1939 to conserve migratory birds, particularly after populations had dwindled due to habitat loss. It is famous for playing a critical role in the recovery of the sandhill crane population and serves as a winter home for thousands of waterfowl. It has become an income producer for the hotels. RV's parks and restaurants in the area. It helps rural New Mexico, like many parks in the country, help rural areas. Rep. Vasquez, a New Mexico Congressman stated the consequences of the cancellation of the annual Festival of the Cranes, a major cultural and economic event that typically brings $2 to $3 million in revenue to Socorro County and contributes to the refuge's broader $15.8 to $17 million annual economic impact to the rural area. Like most parks , it's hanging on having had its funding gutted by the recent federal government. Sadly , it's going from forty five staff to ten , which includes several volunteers. There's only two staff assigned to the water management of the wetlands now. They've been able to keep the Visitor Center open with volunteers and a staff member. as it helps provide information and some income from souvenirs. Quite frankly , it almost makes me weep with the amount of intentional destruction that the federal government caused. That's my opinion and I hope and pray that they'll survive to have some funding restored.

This was a really interesting place to visit, but my God it is so far out there lol the roads twist…read more& turn, through a beautiful drive, but ugh The forest is pretty cool, zero service at all for like probably a 50 mile radius or so. You are definitely going off grid out there No gas stations either, so be sure to fill up. The hills will consume more gas compared to driving on a flat road I would've liked to explore the area more, but mainly drive there to see the dwellings. The hike up can be a bit strenuous for some, it's not but about a half a mile hike. It can get rough though for those who don't do any movement at all. Once in the dwellings, you'll be in there for about 30 minutes max, if you're alone. We stumbled on a tour guide, who talked about each of the rooms. He was really cool. Shout out to Keith, & Gus. As well as the guy who gave us a brief modern history of the dwellings. Couldn't see his name tag I will go back one day, but I will plan for a longer stay next time lol Silver City is a little over 1 hour away, but it feels like a lot longer

Our first visit to Silver City so we went and found the Visitors Center. Very nice building with a…read morereplica of Billy the Kid's cabin on site as well. Inside there is quite a bit of information on the area. But we received the best information from the woman who was manning the desk. She informed us that the Bikes and Blues festival was going on, told us about the different events. Everything we wanted to see; old town, where they were holding the festival were all walking distance from the center. We were able to leave our car there and walk to see all the sights.
