I'd asked for a quote from a few places more than a month before my move. Circumstances dictated that I didn't know exactly when the move would be happening, only that it would be happening.
Larry called me over and over and over again, which was more or less ok because I was truly busy and thought at least someone's reminding me of what stuff I've got to do. He was initially quoting me something like $2500 all told for my one bedroom (though admittedly full) apartment. I kept telling him that that was out of my price range. He kept assuring me we would work something out.
Well, the move is upon us and I still can't afford the numbers he's throwing out, so I say I'm going to do some price shopping. He's combative but says he can do it for $100 an hour for three guys and a truck to put stuff in.
I agree. Morning of the move, two guys show up. With a small pull behind trailer. I ask them to wait and tell them I'm going to have to renegotiate. Larry insists that for two guys, it's $90 an hour and we'll move forward. I try to explain that that does not work for me. While my planning said that three at $100 would probably be doable, two at $90 would not. Larry was very angry about it, but I insisted that this was not something I had agreed to.
I eventually tell him I could do $80 hourly for the two guys (and again, they had a small trailer). He has a fit about it, and I very kindly tell him that I really have to have something that works for me, so I'll go with someone else if I have to. He begrudgingly agrees to it.
In the meantime? His guys have left. Gone. They "freaked out," as Larry put it, because "the place was a mess." Not sure why, if they're getting paid hourly, that would be an issue to begin with, but ... uh, ok. We'd also said that we would pack boxes and they could just take them down as we were ready -- so it's not like they were even being asked to do much.
Really horrible experience, to be honest. Constantly getting called to book them at outrageous prices. Finally do book them -- it's not as agreed, attitude re: renegotiating was awful, and then they just... left, which really left me in a bind.
I frantically made phone calls for a little while and found a delightful company that went above and beyond and got me moved, which honestly meant the world to me because I've been losing three hours a day in a commute in which I don't get to see my end-stage cancer patient husband. Getting those hours -- priceless.
