We are not…read moreexperienced kayakers and you should keep that in mind as you read this because that is the perspective from which I write. The person who took my reservation on the phone was fantastic. When we got to their main location, the girls who helped get us ready were outstanding. There was one person in particular, who was so incredibly helpful and put us at ease. When you finish up your registration you can use the restrooms at their store and there's plenty of merchandise that you can buy, both things that are helpful (think sunscreen, dry bags, snacks), and things that are fun, like postcards and stickers. We paid for a tandem kayak and for a valet service, which was very helpful and made it so that we had to drive to the put in place and then only had to pick up our car when we got to the end of our time. I didn't realize that the drive to the place where we would pick up the kayak and start our float (about 18 mins from the store) was over about 2 miles of a VERY bumpy, dusty, rocky road. Somebody might have mentioned it or it was in the literature, but I just missed it and was slightly worried because we just had a 2 wheel drive rental, and it was rough riding to get there so keep that in mind. When we arrived there was a pit toilet which was helpful and the guys helping with the boats were good (You might want to have some cash to give you a tip although I don't think that's expected but our guy was extra helpful.) Also I want to mention that I am plus-sized and had no problems with the kayak at all. We had an incredible time and it took us about three hours altogether including one stop along the way of about 20 minutes where we ate a snack (made sure to clean all of our trash up), swam for a while and went on our way. We went on a Tuesday at 11am and thought it was slightly crowded, it never felt overwhelming, and we were able to slow down or speed up whenever we felt that we were too close to another group. I also thought that people were respectful when they had speakers and it was never loud or obnoxious. Two things I didn't know before that I hope can help someone else. The first is that there were a couple of times when we went over fast moving water (I can't even really call it rapids, but definitely moving quickly) where we got stuck on the rocks and almost turned over. Not a huge deal and almost entirely due to our lack of experience, but just keep that in mind it's not 100% floating peacefully the entire time. Once we had that experience on the first couple times we were completely fine for the rest. The other thing is that just past the place where you pull in and drop off your kayak is a super fun area where you can paddle into a cave, jump from the rocks, and just kind of hang out. If we would've known that it was there we would've stayed around a bit longer. Again, nobody's fault Just something we didn't know beforehand. I highly recommend Buffalo River outfitters - we had a blast!

After maybe 3 or 4 times calling them throughout the course of a day (yes, I can sometimes be that person - not always, I promise!), we finally booked. We rented 2 single kayaks for a Sunday morning. Once we got there, we actually decided to push back the time for the 3 hours float vs. the original 5 we booked. Once the time came for our float, there was a school bus out in the parking lot, and a number of hopped on. The driver was very accommodating and told us a great deal of info. After going through the woods, we made it to our destination in what looked like the middle of nowhere. We hopped out, she told us how to find the destination point for pick up and what all to look out for in the water. They picked us up shortly after we finished our float and we were headed back to Houston!

They've shuttled our vehicles to a variety of locations as we ventured up and down for more of the Buffalo. Crockett's have always offered the best and most dependable advice - and have ALWAYS under promised and then over delivered!

John provided a bronco busting bus ride to the river. The people at the shop were friendly and helpful. Kayak rental was $69 plus tax. But they do provide a 30 minute bus ride to the drop off to save you the trouble of running cars.

So one of two things happened, the owners of wild Bill outfitter do not know the river conditions or they did not tell us the truth. So unfortunate. Needless to say, we did not show up the next morning bright and early to rent anything. I felt like I dodged a $100 bullet of frustration by not renting from these people. And I would not recommend wild bills outfitter for river conditions, information, go look for yourself.

The driveway is extremely steep and gravel. The first time I only made it half way in my Subaru Impreza. I bottomed out. Attempts after that I stayed to the far left in low gear and could make it. Then the stairs up to the cabin are very steep with high steps. Inside, the stairs to the left are steep and unevenly spaced. Other than that , the cabin is beautiful. Kitchen fully stocked with whatever pan, bowl or utensil needed. Beds are comfy. Shower is amazing. So is the hot tub. The fire pit area is landscaped nicely . River was up. So, we didn't get to float. However, hiking areas are beautiful. Found our way to Jasper one day and explored there.

We spent one day canoeing on the river and another day hiking to Sunrise Bluff and the old ghost town of Pinnacle Springs. The partners, John and Matt, were so friendly and able to recommend floating/excursion ideas for my day. Their shuttle service was perfect and they arrived when they said they would. The equipment was top notch and most importantly affordable. Seeing the sheer amount of white water rapids, large boulders, and deep pools filled with fish definitely are going to lure me back here. If only I had brought my fishing pole with me... The campsites were clean and dispersed which made me able to connect with the woods teeming with bird songs and wildlife.
