The Silver Lake Cafe was a Thankful and pleasant surprise. When you travel through the high desert country in Central and Eastern Oregon where you just don't have many places to eat. Silver Lake Cafe located on the East side of town right on Highway 31 was the only restaurant in over 75 miles that served breakfast on our trip to Boise. It opens at 9 am. It was a simple and clean stop with nice restrooms. The prices were very good as was the food. This old place has changed hands and was empty for a while since I first visited it years ago. It looks is age outside and in with decor that appears to be rejects from am old antique shop. However, the food is first rate. Before I notice a sign advertising the summer specials of Argentine beef pie and chicken pie, I ordered ta hamburger with a tortilla chili with a side of a bowl of chili. The burger was loaded with pickle relish, thousand Island dressing, pickles, tomato, lettuce, onion and a thick round of beef--appropriate for ranch country. It was very good. We stopped in on our way to our vacation at the coast. We've stopped in here before, and never regret it. Small town homey vibe. Always good food. The kids declared their chicken strips the best in the world and my Reuben was fantastic. I will definitely get it again when I go through. My husband had the French dip which he said was extremely tender. They make their own roast for the French dip. The only complaints I heard were that the French dip could have been more flavorful and the ranch was a bit too salty -nothing enough to impact my review. On our way to scope out a few areas along the Fremont National Recreation Trail, we decided to stop in Silver Lake for some burgers. This being the Oregon Outback you never know when somewhere will be open and you can never be sure they will take card, so I always grab cash in La Pine. Thankfully they were open. The lady working told me they were normally open 11-7 and closed Mondays. I went with the bacon cheeseburger. It was outstanding, fresh juicy and cooked perfectly. Hands down best fries I've ever had. They start with whole potatoes and cut them in-house. Although I've had many good burgers over the years, the Baby Hoss at the Silver Lake Cafe is probably better than any of them. I never tire of them and it's my favorite thing on the menu. The Burger was under cooked and soggy enough to saturate the bun. The fries were limp and so salty we couldn't eat them.The wrap was OK but about double in cost as any other small town. There were clues: a paper sign on the wall about the pies for dessert (freshly made on the premises), a local who dropped by some vegetables from his garden, the demeanor of the people around - content. We stayed overnight at Ana Reservoir RV park. Heading north on Hwy 31, we found our new breakfast place! The ONLY place for miles! I looked on Yelp and was very happy to see the wonderful reviews. We were warmly greeted by Maria (owner) and felt right at home. We both had the classic breakfast and it was mighty tasty. My hubby loves a great sausage patty and Maria fixed him right up! Needless to say, I had so much on my plate that I left with 2 pieces of bacon and toast for my late morning snack. Did I mention that I had the best sourdough toast, btw it's grilled on both sides and so yummy! Maria gave us a tour of her new bar, that I might add has only been open for 9 months. You can surely tell all of her hard work she has done to make it homey for the locals and visitors alike. If you're in the neighborhood passing by, this is the place to stop to eat!
