Turtles, squirrels, and birds of all kind added to the experience. The trail I was on offered a lot of shade, so even though it was warm outside I did not feel overly hot or sweaty. It was also very quiet and peaceful, especially considering it was a Saturday afternoon.

Just while searching for beaches in a 30 minute driving radius, we ran into this gem of a park that's so well maintained. They have ample free parking and the walk to the bay is so quick. The bay might not be the best to walk on as sand is relatively less with more gravels and getting down to it from the stairs is little difficult even for well grown adults. This could definitely be wheelchair accessible in a certain way. They also have few picnic enclosures and a memorial to one of their town's fallen soldiers. The walking pavement is neatly laid out for a calm, peaceful and relaxing walk. We went on overcast conditions and had to return to the car just before the rain caught up. Will definitely return here for summers to watch the sunset in this beautiful bay/park.

I am also so happy that Wheeler park welcomes everyone from all over NJ (and elsewhere). Coming from out of the county will cost you a bit more, but not much. If you live outside of Union County it is $4.00 for kids ($2.00 in county) and $6.00 for adults ($3.00 in county). This splash pad has every water feature a kid could ever need - from bigger twisty water slides, to a small dragon water slide. Also, water guns that you can shoot each other with, a pirate boat, water shooting up from the ground, and much more. My kids spent a little over 2 hours here and had an absolute blast. We've been here about 3 times and it never disappoints. Just be sure to bring some sort of shade covering. There isn't much cover at the splash pad so we usually bring our small beach tent with us. There is also a dry playground in the splash pad gated area where kids can play too. They have staff who help keep the kids safe and to make sure everyone goes down the water slides safe and sound. I highly recommend Wheeler Spray Park on a hot summer day.

Before artillery and ordinance became too powerful, coastal defenses were a critical part of…read morenational war efforts to protect our young cities from naval bombardment. The Narrows dividing Upper and Lower New York Bay were the best spot to position those military efforts and the Fort Wadsworth complex on northeastern Staten Island was selected to build those primary fortifications. As we know, the British occupied New York City and Staten Island early in the Revolutionary War. The Reds were aware of the value of this locale, but did not fear the fledgling American Navy. It was not until after independence that our weak central government began to take steps to utilize the area for defense of what became our most important harbor. First sandstone, later granite, were set to allow over 200 cannon to be placed facing the lower harbor to repel invaders. The War of 1812 and the Civil War saw the most activity and growth, until Fort Wadsworth was the largest and most formidable redoubt on the Atlantic seaboard. By the early 20th Century coastal defenses were no longer relevant due to the firepower on ships and the birth of the modern Air Force. Today, the fort has been decommissioned and become part of the Gateway National Recreation Area run by the National Park Service. The 226 acres bracketing the north end of the Verrazano Bridge is now a great place to walk, explore the old naval station and see a spectacular view of Lower Manhattan from the promontory facing Upper New York Harbor that sits directly under the bridge. This whole stretch of eastern Staten Island is mostly deserted in winter, making an ideal time to visit and allow your imagination to run wild with how different this spot was earlier in our national history. I have driven over the VNB hundreds of times, remarked on the fantastic view of city and harbor from the steel span, but never realized Fort Wadsworth was there beneath me. I guess getting onto the Belt Parkway required all my attention. Now that I know and have visited its historic granite walls, I will at the very least acknowledge its stony presence and tip my cap in passing to thank all who served there in defense of our young nation.

This was followed by an excellent, very steep, heart-pumping climb to the top of the "mountain". After about another 1/2 a mile I came to the LaTourette Golf Course and cut across a small parking lot. In the next leg of the hike, I encountered many deer, robins, woodpeckers, big blue jays. bright red cardinals & squirrels. There was a section of the park which turned out to be burned down, I am not even sure if the FDNY is aware of this. I really enjoyed the solace of this place and the way the birds sings and calls echo throughout the forest. There are large trees, some of the largest I have seen on Staten Island. Please be aware of the abundance of poison ivy - stick to the trail!

Many of the families that returned each year were multi-generational. The special part of being a resident were the activities each day run by a hired camp counselor team. We had an orchestra from NYC play every Saturday night starting at 6 PM for the little kids, teenagers danced to records, then the band came back at 10 PM for the adults. We participated in all sports. My first kiss, first beer, first dance all happened at Cedar Grove. We lost our house in 1992 to a strong storm, and I understand the entire beach was decimated during hurricane Sandy. Of all my life long memories, Cedar Grove Beach Club is my most favorite, sacred of all others. I cherish those summers.

I know there are nicer beaches, Jersey Coast and such, but this one is local.

Silver Lake Park is a fairly decent sized park and recreational center located in a very nice neighborhood in the charming and lively area in Staten Island, New York. This park can be accessible from the 278 or Staten Island Expressway to Verrazano Narrows Bridge and also from Shore Parkway and Belt Parkway. Perfectly nestled between Upper Bay and Lower Bay of New York Harbor. This park features many parking options. Silver Lake Park features many engaging amenities, programs and water activities for all ages. This park features opens fields, courts and paved pathways for outdoor activities such as walking, biking, skating, jogging, strolling, soccer and baseball. Warning! There are no bathrooms anywhere to pee! read more

You'd never know this was once a wasteland filled with many abandoned cars, because it's now a very peaceful and good-sized place with six ponds. The two largest (and most beautiful) are Blue Heron Pond & Spring Pond. The reflection of the foliage in the water was really lovely! There are naturalist-guided walks every Sunday at 1:15 & 2:15 p.m. and they leave from the Nature Center. In addition, there are various other programs (see the Friends of Blue Heron Park web site).

We passed an area where they had different types of peacocks, it was like a little peacock zoo. Of course there's beautiful areas with a pond. We saw more then one. The trails we took were a total of 3.38 miles, we did that in 11/2 hours and they went back through the trails again. It's really a beautiful walk/hike that I'd love to go through on a slower pace and photograph more. Not scary if you're going alone. I believe dogs are allowed on leash.
