My dog had conjunctivitis late on Saturday morning. He was the 3rd vet I called. The first one she went to before but I was told she couldn't be seen until Wednesday which obviously unacceptable. I called the 2nd vet and was told she couldn't be seen until Thursday. Now I called Silver Sands and Dr DeForge and she was seen that day and was able to start on it that day. I have been bringing my pets to Dr. DeForge for years now. He and the staff at Silver Sands Veterinary have been consistently helpful and compassionate when caring for my fur babies. My dog was born with a spinal deformity, limiting her range of motion. Thanks to pain management and physical therapy done here she is moving around much better than she used to. She loves her visits with the Dr. and especially with Crystal, one of the very caring staff members who gives her lots of love (and cookies!) Overall, the staff has been wonderful. I was referred to Dr. Deforge by my primary vet, for my dog who was diagnosed with osteomyelitis in his jaw. At first I had very high hopes. Then, to my surprise, I had the same experience as multiple other patients of dealing with a condescending, egotistical, and rude doctor. If you do not agree with something, choose to take a different path, or simply do not want to do whatever extensive diagnostic he suggests, you will receive multiple condescending emails basically of him gloating about himself and then sending you elsewhere if you do not agree to his ridiculous demands. Yes, Dr. Deforge, I am in fact in control of MY dog and how I want to navigate treating him. I had to reread many of his emails over and over again to actually believe a professional in fact sent me this. You are not allowed inside the office, you meet one of the techs outside in the parking lot to hand off your dog. Ridiculous. Although, the techs were very nice to deal with. Dr. Deforge may be a great veterinarian to some, although I would not know, because the procedure he performed on my dog was unsuccessful and cost me close to 4k and when I did not want to do further testing on an issue totally separate from his osteomyelitis (the entire reason I began seeing him in the first place), he had his receptionist send me an email and send me on my way elsewhere. I'd give ZERO stars if I could. Prime example of bait & switch. I previously called roughly 10 other vets in the area to get my dogs teeth cleaned. Some estimates were from $400-800, 600-1000, 800-1200. $200 gets you in the door here, but the estimates after were ridiculous. My grand total would've been $1550 minimum !!! The Dr wanted to shave down my dogs face to clean his teeth !!! I've never heard of ANY vet wanting to do so. Needless to say that after the initial visit I didn't return. A terrible experience. Dr. Deforge is rude, abrupt and just plain mean. I am sorry I even made the hour plus drive to have my dogs tooth extracted. I ended up crying in the parking lot as he was so rude and aggressive. If I calmed down and took a minute I would have left. He quoted me between $799-$1000 (and upon pick up charged me over $1700). I wish I had read the reviews but I was worried my dogs tooth infection was urgent. Stay clear of this place unless you want to get treated badly and pay way more than needed disgusted. to bad they don't have a negative star read more

Dr. Deforge and his amazing staff have taken such good loving care of all of my pets as if they were family. Both my two dogs and now my current pet which is a cat. I would go here over anyone else. i will never return to this dr defoe of silver sands veterinary practice. the man is condescending self justifying and has no shame. they left my 6 month old puppy dog on a noose in his foyer unsupervised, although for only a few moments she was got all tangled and when i entered she was yelping in agnoy as the rope was all twisted up around her legs. i had to work quickly to release her as the danger was clear and present she could have easily broken her legs struggling. she was so scared before i could even get my leash on her she ran out of the foyer scared and limping into the parking lotn and almost ran into the street. i called out for assistance and no one came. but they were quick to rum my credit card i was shocked when i went to tell him what happened all he could do was tell me what a difficult person to deal. i have investigated him on social media and looked for other reviews and see others have had nightmare experiences with . so a word to the wise stay far far away from this man and this silver sands veterinary practice. dr. defoe has it all twisted up as far as i am concerned. read more

Am not a regular with Dr. DeForge but my boyfriends dog needed to be put down recently and we had originally needed the Doctor to come to his house to do the procedure. Unfortunately they do not have a van big enough yet to bring an 80+ lb dog back with them after the procedure is done so we ended up bringing him there instead. Dr. DeForge and Jennifer the vet tech were nothing but apologetic about the situation and the lack of transportation had we have put him down at home. They let us go at our own pace with the euthanisation and gave us as much time as we needed afterwards. They were nothing but accommodating and understanding during an extremely sad situation. I am very thankful to them and will definitely recommend them to others in the future. read more

Everyone at Silver Sands is great. When I needed a vet to look at my dog who was in pain, they were able to take him right away. My other vet (who I was with for many many years), would not be able to see my dog for 2 weeks even though my dog was shaking in pain and it was an urgent matter. The folks at Silver Sands are very kind and care about the animals. Dr. DeForge is wonderful at answering my questions, no matter how silly they may be. I know my dogs are in good hands. read more

Dr.Deforge will claims that he is a cat-person but certainly doesn't act like it. Even something as simple as administering a shot- he will make the nurse, or worse you, hold the cat all the while freaking out and screaming that he doesn't want to get scratched. There's no calmness to his demeanor regarding the animals and they can sense it. His answer to every problem is switching your pets food to science diet. I swear he gets paid by them and any vet who claims science diet is good for your pet, can't be trusted. They are overpriced and he often tacks on unnecessary procedures. More than anything I wish I couid give a glowing report of this establishment after the death of my beloved Austrailian Sheppard Quiggley who died a weeek ago from cancer. Dr Deforge is a good vet unless pet parent question him about anything and then insted of taking peoples concerns seriously enough to talk to them he responds only by email reminding the owner of what a wonderful vet Deforge thinks he is. He CLAIMS to be the only hospice for animals in the state of Ct but ANY vet can proscrible pain medication for a terminally ill animal and thats all Deforge diid. Having lost my mum three years ago I have seen REAL Hospice care in action. Nothing Deforge did qualifies as Hospice. Quiggley was going to die regsrdless of any thing done for him and my heart is broken not just at his loss but at the behavior of a yet who rambles on and on about how much compassion he has. His skills in dealing with human beings is attrocious. I have spoken to enough ex patients of his and read enough reviews to know that , despite any nastiness he will engage in when he sees this review the problem is with Donald Deforge NOT any of the many people who are less than impressed with the care he gives. He seems to be completely incapable of understanding that while he may have the professional credentials pet owners know their animals much better than he does. When i talked about ending Quiggleys more life more than once I was belittled and made to feel like I was an idiot who just wanted to kill my dog. Apparently for him quality of live decisions are to be made by reading a piece of paper insted of insted of offering to see the animal. .I scheduled a date to end Quiggleys life because I knew from looking in his eyes he wanted to go. I simply said IF it looked like he could go for a couple of more days I would like to p[ost pone the date. I told the office I would make that decision when I saw my boy as Id been away for a couple of days . He decided that he was going to cancel the euthanasia and then lied to my face abouit it. I am so grateful that my Quiggley died on his own terms . i came home last Thursday from bein away for work for a couple of days. . i kissed my face wagged his tail had some water and then died. I know Quiggley chose to not be put down by Deforge, I have every reason to know that Deforge will bad mouth me because thats what he has done to every one who has given a less than flattering review . That is his right. I am writing this review out concern for any one who may get sucked in by Deforges self agrandising critiques of his work. PLEASE before you choose a vet for yyour beloved pets ask around . Be willing to go beyond just listening to what Deforgr claims about himself. Make phone calls. Talk to every one you can. Your pets are loved by you and your family dont let any vet make you feel as if questionin him or her is not to happen. If i had done my home work I never would have stepped foot into Deforges establishment. i will end tis with saying that I have a couple of good friens who i respect greatly and who have helped me in moe ways than i can list here. My family and I love Silver Sands Vet. We had a very sick 13 year old cat who had been seeing another vet throughout her whole life. We took her to Dr. Deforge when she was in need of immediate attention and him and his staff took her in right away. They were all so kind to us and really made us feel comfortable. Dr. Deforge offers a range of payment options and cost-effective strategies that don't cost an arm and a leg when dealing with your pet's problems, provides comprehensive discharge instructions after procedures and frequently compiles additional time-consuming follow-up information and options for your benefit. The office staff is always attentive and responsive to concerns and issues and the practice always tries to work around your schedule with flexible and extended hours. I'm not sure why others have disparaged the Dr's demeanor, overall he and the staff have handled our pets professionally and skillfully, including several that are, to put it kindly, less than savvy about going to the vet or being handled by 'strangers'. Additionally, the office rehabilitated and adopted a cat with significant medical problems that was going to be euthanized and Dr. Deforge also has his own personal cats.
