There are and few remaining bookstores in San Francisco. A more rare combination will be a bookstore and a comix shop. One place on Valencia street there is such a place with independent books and comix. This place has graphic novels, great books, comics, and zines from diverse points of views .There are also lots of framed art work on the walls. Horrible experience. Ordered a book and got a UPS tracking number. A month has gone by and UPS has not received the book to ship. Nothing but excuses from customer "service". Asked for a refund. Now they don't even reply. Luckily paid with PayPal. Shared all my communications with them and hope to get a refund. read more

The curation of the contents within the store are what bring me coming back each time when I have a chance when visiting SF. I'm very appreciative of representation of smaller, independent artists and commend them for being a place that gives them a platform to showcase their works to the public/ community. I stumbled upon this place by chance when visiting for the Bernal Heights Film Festival last year and have always found something new to love each time I visit. This place has so many graphic novels and comics for all! Even kids! The employees are really sweet, and there are even places to sit and enjoy the space. They even sell local and non-local artists' works. Items are decently priced, which is also a plus. Really enjoy the vibe in here. If I had the time, I would be in here for hours looking through everything. read more

A comfy haven for queer and/or POC-centered zines, comics, stickers, posters, sweaters, and tees. They stock a diversity of authors, ranging from little known local submissions to Junji Ito, which always makes for a fun experience and constantly changing merchandise. The Silver Sprocket is a Zine store with graphic novels and alternative press publications. Friendly and knowledgeable staff who are also authors and writers. I am in the process of putting out volume one of my memoirs of time abroad in India. Got some good tips from staff here. I also checked out some publications related to memoir and travel. They have some really cool unique publications here. This store is very DIY and punk rock. This store replaces 1-2-3-4 Go Records yet there Oakland branch is still open for music lovers. I love quirky independent shops that allows various artistic expressions flourish, and this is one of them. When I used to manage a comic shop in San Antonio, we would bring a little of their flavor to the central Texas. I brought my family here and they were quite delighted to find such a selection of zines, books, and stories to fill their sponge like brains. I would definitely come back again. When I visited the store Saturday afternoon, I came across a book titled "Wonton Soup" by James Stokoe (a white guy), and it made me uncomfortable, because it was reflective of Orientalism and centers around a white dude fighting ninjas, which has nothing to do with China. A white employee came up to me interjecting himself into my conversation with a friend. He proceeded to white-splain to me, an East Asian-looking man, about the book detailing exploration of "exotic ingredients," defending the author. He is in no position to comment on how an Asian person should feel about cultural appropriation or Orientalism. Train your employees to be better, please. Listen to people of color instead of projecting your own white opinions onto us. Don't shop here. I hope this guy gets fired. He shouldn't be saying those things. read more

Silver Sprocket is a rad shop for art: books, comics, shirts, zines. Lots of artist offerings on resistance & queer topics. I was curious about this spot after Bang On went away, and ended up stopping here initially a few months ago for a gift. Came back this past weekend & picked up a book for myself and brought a couple visitors with. Staff behind the counter was super friendly & offered a poster with a catalog of their publications on the reverse. Definitely recommend checking them out. Great stop when you're in the Haight. I'm not sure how to describe this store...fun, it's a fun store. There is a good selection art, comics and comic inspired items. This is the perfect store for the kid in all of us.
