I took the risotto class and instantly fell in love with this place. There was a small class of about nine, and both Myrna and Jake talked us through how to make four different risottos. It is not feasible for the entire class to be hands-on for all participants at all times because even at nine people, there is not enough room at the two stoves for everyone to be working. However, everyone had an opportunity to cook on at least one of the risottos. I am sure the same could not be said of classes at other large-scale businesses, unless you are wanting to pay for private lessons or attend culinary school. In reading past reviews, I agree that conversation is free flowing and not always focused on cooking. However, Chef Myrna happily answered any and all questions I asked. As a customer, you just need to speak up politely and ask for the information. I learned a great deal and I also had a lot of fun visiting with Myrna and Jake as well as my fellow classmates. I do not recommend this class for people who take themselves too seriously. It is about having fun while you learn some new dishes. So, mission accomplished, in my opinion. With regards to past reviews being frustrated at finding out the wine must be paid for... the wine list with glass and bottle prices was clearly displayed at my seat. The wine glass was already at my place setting, but the same thing happens at some restaurants. You are not surprised you have to pay for the wine at a restaurant, so paying at Silver Whisk should not be a surprise either. When in doubt... ask a question. I do not even own a facebook account and I opened a yelp account just to write this review. With that having been said, let me take a brief moment to paint a picture of the occasion. On my birth day the love of my life surprised me. Driving down 620 I could not have guessed for the life of me where we were going. Upon arrival, we walked into a beatiful and spacious kitchen that felt more like home than a commercial kitchen. I was greeted by Myrna the head Chef and Jake, her trusty sidekick. They were so inviting as a private and local artist played music and sang in the background. The menu had been set up and the wine choice was amazing. Jake took the time to go over the different wines that we paired with the meal we made. The first course was a wonderful salad served with a side of brie, strawberry vinegrette dressing and I believe spinach. It was truely exceptional and tasted as wonderful as it looked. The salad was followed by a home made bread that was made in the oven with artichoke, spices and dried tomatoes that paired well with the muscles that were served along side. As the evening progressed, we personally made the main dishes (with professional supervision of course) that were sword fish, brussle sprouts and mashed potatoes that were well thought out with a squeeze of roasted garlic mashed into the potatoes. The wine was professionally advised as it paired perfectly with the meal and gave us another personal and intimate touch because we were given the luxury of choice. About an hour and a half in and a couple glasses of wine later, I was praying the night would never end and so touched that so much thought had been put into the most romantic night of my life to date :). The way we were engaged left nothing to be desired and what started off as a fun date became a life long memory with new friends that will follow us throught life. If you want your architype of beauty, the love of your life, your better half to have an absolutely unforgettable experience, plan a date he or she will remember for the rest of thier life. Remember that you can be a part of the whole process by picking out the meal you may have never been able to cook yourself in a space that you will not have to clean up with people that will cater to your every need and will make you feel like family. Myrna and Jake can help you choose the food, wine and sides. But be warned by the end of the night you will probably be sharing stories, desert and wine with the chefs so be prepared to make wonderful friends. I gave this place a chance even after reading the reviews and am sorry I didn't take them more seriously. I attended a class on July 29 and listened to the chefs disappointment in not getting a bid on the house she wanted instead of learning more about the food she was cooking. Now, over a week later, I have not received the recipes promised. The food was good, but very little instruction in how to make them was given. After attending classes at Whole Foods, I was very disappointed in the lack of professionalism given in this class and find it very disconcerting that promises made have not been kept. Spend a little more money and get a much better experience at other places! read more

What can I say about this place, It has been the gift that keeps on giving. I originally found out about this place by my Beautiful Lety who got us cooking classes for a great date night. We are now 3 times repeat offenders, and each time gets better. The staff is energetic and interactive. They create a fun learning atmosphere and the food we make is great. What I love about this last one, Mardi Gas Madness was the element of a live musician. It was the perfect compliment. We went and celebrated a friends birthday(we will find any excuse to go back) and he said this was his best birthday ever!! And he is old so he has had a few haha. Chef Myrna is a great host and really makes everyone feel welcomed and likes we are at a friends house. Love it and will be back for burgers and beers night and italian date night. We went for Valentines Day. I highly recommend the experience. Chef Myrna was knowledgeable and had tons of personality to go with it. Assistants were aspiring chefs, most of them enrolled in culinary school. We learned cool tips in a relaxed atmosphere...zero pressure. They offer kids cooking school too. We had a company outing (team building event) at Silver Whisk and it was AWESOME! We had a pretty large group and they were very accommodating and well organized as far as the logistics were concerned. There were customized parting gifts for everyone, a guy playing guitar and singing, as well as plenty of food and drink. We did an Iron Chef competition which allowed us to split into 4 separate groups, each led by a different chef. At the end of the competition winners and losers were declared and prizes awarded. If you're looking to plan a fun, creative, and interactive event for your corporate outing I would highly recommend Silver Whisk. read more

My wife and I participated in the Valentine Couples Cooking class at Silver Whisk The staff was friendly and their service was very good. Jake was the chef that led our class through the creating of a Petite Filet, Shrimp Scampi dinner. We will likely go to other classes for fun in the future! read more

I am going to agree with one of the other comments. Chef Myrna Is very knowledgable and her love and passion for food is very apparent, however I have been cooking for years and to some degree felt that I was being talked down to the entire class. I could have answered each question that was asked and would of been correct. BUT the real problem was the follow through. The class was promised that e-mails would be sent out with the recipes. Maybe the e-mails were sent, but no one in the group I went with got them. I know for a fact I didnt and asked each of my friends if they got them. Nope, they didnt. Recipes are rather easy to find on the web and Myrna herself didn't follow the printed direction when working with us on a few of the recipies. I just do not understand why they say they will send them if they have no intention of doing so. Follow thru is everything for a company name and their follow thru is less than steller. The other part that bothered me was the wine and drink service. When you arrive they ask "Would you like a glass of wine?" One of us said "No, thank-you." They then offer water or Tea. Then at the end of the class you are billed per glass. At no time did they say there was a charge for the wine or mention it on the website. Several of us did this as a group, but I don't think any of us will ever do it again. We just call it lesson learned. read more

Myrna and Jake came to my house last week and did an in home cooking class. It was absolutely fantastic. The food was outstanding and they let us participate as much (or as little) as we wanted. They brought all the food and did a wonderful job describing what they were doing as they went along. BBQ shrimp and home made scratch biscuits were just wonderful as a starter and we rolled right in to the honey glazed pork tenderloin and then the chocolate bread pudding was a great end. They were so much fun and we all just had a really fun and relaxing evening. I would use them again in an instant !! read more

Given the price, the attitude, and yes, even the slick name and logo, I was expecting something a little more polished. Starting with the plastic aprons -- really? Cloth, washable, reusable ones aren't that expensive and they are really much classier, not to mention greener!! The food choice was fairly mundane and not terribly innovative; there were a couple of food restrictions in the group and unfortunately the chef approach seemed very binary ("well, you SAID we COULDN'T do X or Y"). This issue has always been addressed in a more nuanced way in the past, when working with other cooking schools and programs (maybe they make it with one food but show how it could be done differently or make half with one item and half with something else). In other reviews, I saw others mention that they had trouble tracking down recipes; this was not a problem and we appreciated receiving them. read more

I will have to concur with Ginger's comments from June of this year. I held off on this posting, hoping ownership would do the right thing in correcting their mistakes, but unfortunately they are not holding to their word. We were looking for a team event in Austin for a managers outing. In speaking with Jake he shared how the process would work and it tied to his Facebook postings for recently having an event with Visa and the pictures were of a restaurant setup with a commercial kitchen where easily 20 people could fit comfortably. There were also pictures of nicely laid out dining room tables and the teams being in a fun environment with music and hats, etc. I stated to him that due to our allocation of properties paying each expense we would need to pay him with multiple checks and he was OK with that and cooperated. Less than a week before the event I requested the address of the venue. He stated he was working on it and that was concerning because how could he not know where we were holding this event. I later received an email stating that location was no longer available but rest assured you will be taken care of before your event. That wasn't acceptable and I told him I needed to know by 5pm the next day to ensure we could have a backup plan for our team who were coming in from out of town in some instances. he provided another event the Swoop House and even confirmed it in email. On Friday before the event Monday we exchanged emails after 5pm and no where was it mentioned this new location was a problem. At 4:08 pm on Saturday afternoon (less than 2 days before event) and I'm not in Austin, he emails to state he moved locations on us. Now we are in a home, with no commercial kitchen setup. I can only say it goes downhill from here. We paid $3,000 for a restaurant experience and commercial kitchen equipment and good food. We were thrown into a residential home (even though it was beautiful), had just a regular stove and oven. He brought in individual burners to cook on. Tried to place 17 servings of fish in the oven that couldn't get cooked and they were going to serve to us until I said something. the house smelled of fish/onions and so did we because no ventilation so back door had to be opened up. I have so much more to elaborate on and happy for anyone to email me for specifics. If you are looking to host something in Austin of a team environment this is not the company for you. They are no longer based here or have the connections they may have had in the past. They are in Houston and for the money there are many things out there your teams would benefit from and having a better experience. Again, my hope was the right thing would be done with some discounting off of our pricing, but they didn't waiver a penny. We didn't get what we paid for. read more
