I have had a few elderly neighbors stay here over the years. One of them for just a short stay and…read morethe others for longer stays or had moved in there. Each time I went to visit I found their accommodations to be professional, friendly and the care specialized to each resident, and you can tell the people are truly invested in the care of the residents. I was also invited to stay for lunch a few times. It was good, but fairly average as long-term and skilled nursing care facilities go. They have a dedicated room for physical therapy and will be honest with their assessments for future and appropriate placement in one of their specialized wings. I observed one neighbor in the PT room and the staff was very friendly, yet serious about the help they were providing. Sadly, one of my neighbors passed away there and she had said if she had to end up somewhere other than her home, it would be at Mt. Baker Care Center.

Honestly, I was shocked at how bad this place was. This rehab facility (for mostly old people) was…read morerecommended by a care nurse at the local hospital. I thought the 1st place my dad was at last year (in Anacortes) wasn't that good, but at least they seemed to care for my dad....Shuksan couldn't have given a rats ass about him or anything else. For example: until my dad was given the all clear to walk, he wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom without assistance. The 2nd weekend I visited, he couldn't get anyone to help out. It took them 5 hours to come around to help him to the bathroom, and by then he had sh*t himself. Then it took another 3 hours to clean it up and while cleaning him up they ridiculed him. This man ran industries and was a world expert in fisheries. I found the CNA's in the common room watching tv and playing cards. I ripped them a new one....and it did no good. Another visit, I walked by a room with its blinds open. The patient was naked with no sheets covering her, falling off the bed (looked like she was hardly hanging on and screaming in pain. My friend who was with me tried to get the nurses to help, but they were more interested in playing with the cat. My friend eventually helped the patient back into the bed (and was then threatened with expulsion and arrest). Finally, at the end of dad's stay, we had a meeting with dad and I, the head staff of each department and a coordinator. I was told (I still had the medical POA) in the meeting that they were releasing him because his insurance had run out and that he could do everything well enough to live on his own. That was a load of bs, he still struggled to walk and do basic tasks....and the coordinator didn't pay any attention to the concerns I had. To top it all off, when I asked for a copy of her notes, she told me I wasn't allowed to see them. That turned into a big fight.... My dad didn't want me to write a review of Shuksan, but now that he passed away, I will do my duty to ensure that this place dies a miserable death and its staff gets their licenses revoked.

I…read moreautomatically think more on the negative side because it is a skilled facility for end of life and I have seen too many nursing homes/rehab facilities, etc that have/had no business being in business. I know the Whatcom Hospice House is not a nursing home - but I hadn't any past experience with a Hospice facility. It was a complete shocker walking in their front doors. It was very beautiful, very warm, and very inviting. The employees were so polite, caring, and there every step of the way through this last journey for our Mom. The facility is very clean and has "NO" fowl odor that you would normally smell in the other facilities I mentioned above. It was clean top to bottom and side to side. Beautiful wood floors, fountains in the back yards of the rooms with benches to sit and enjoy the water, to smiles walking down the hallways as you pass the employees. This is a game changer for anyone like me that has doubts. I want to let each and everyone of you reading this know that our family would put any other family members that needed this care in the Whatcom Hospice House without question or doubt. I give them my 100% support and endorsement for being one of the BEST medical/care facilities I have ever seen. You all have knocked it out of the park. Unfortunately there is no ZERO ,definitely ,…read more I complain about the extreme cold weather in room number 10 ( as there was a drop in the temperature and that is due to: 1- horrible metal doors & big window on the garden ,which all staff mentioned that issue EXITED before . 2- air vent of your disgusting air condition- directly on the head of the patient . 3-poor maintenance temperature panel that you can't increase the temperature or even turn it off .. 4-cracks around the broken rubber frame around the metal door . your staff changed our room to 12 & I changed the location of the bed to avoid the air vent and I slept next to my beloved poor mother on the reclining chair but unfortunately ,it was the worse ever experience I have ever had . Even I am healthy person ,but I was freeze the whole night even I had legging and trouser and I put scarf on my mother and I. All your staff without exceptions ,confirmed that it is like this and they have been mentioning it to their management without any single respond as the building is very old . I walked in, sat down with Christine and cried from every emotion I had built up trying to find out where and how to start. Its all history from there, everything fell into place with all the contacts she provided as well as her personal help. It has been 6 months now and they are both healthier and more alive with spunk thanks too the caring nature of all who work in this facility.
