I worked for Silvergate as a caregiver years ago. College freshman-- my first job, and very naive. Please do NOT bring your loved ones here. I've witnessed countless abuse from many caregivers-- both verbal and physical. The upper management turns a blind eye. I remember being in one of the monthly meetings and the director describing our patients as mere money-makers for the company. And each staff member was essentially replaceable. So many caretakers would manhandle our fragile and elderly patients. During showers, if we had a patient in their later stages of dementia, I've seen a caregiver spray them in the face and yell at them to sit down. I've seen them yank them up from their wheelchairs and transport them with absolutely no regard for their safety. I've seen them throw them down onto the beds and change them in a very inhumane way. I've seen a patient choke to death. Our lead med-aid sat there and allowed her to die even when one of our caregivers offered to fish the obstruction out of her mouth. He was instructed to do NOTHING and leave. He sat there and watched her choke to death and die. Our monthly meetings would contain no content and would teach us absolutely nothing. They'd rush their meetings and hand us a paper to sign that we took the "course". I had no first aid experience, but I signed a paper showing they taught me when in fact-- they did nothing. I have no excuse today-- but back then, I was truly naive and thought it was normal. MOST of the caregivers treated the elderly so harshly-- some much more than others. I wish I had spoken up back then-- but I honestly wasn't sure if it was wrong bc everyone made it seem so normal. I treated all my patients are if they were my own grandmother or grandfather. I loved them. And I was teased by the other caregivers for being favorited. I am now a mother of 3 kids and my parents are at that stage where they can't fully take care of themselves. And I think to myself-- I would be devastated if I found out my parents were treated as horribly as what I've witnessed in my younger years. I live with that guilt everyday that I didn't say or do anything. This facility should be investigated and shut down. The woman in this photo should be in jail-- but I think its been so many years-- she might be at that stage where she needs those services herself. read more

My friend Al was at Slivergate in San Marcos for about a year and a half, most of that time in memory care. Everyone there was outstanding. Very welcoming and caring. From care givers to med techs to nurses to front house staff, all were caring, helpful, understanding and sympathetic. I can't praise them enough! It was a difficult time for him, and they were all there to help him. If you are looking for a place for a loved one, I highly recommend Silvergate. read more

I thought I already left a five star review! Friendly, helpful staff. Activity director was excellent at organizing Easter Brunch and greeting clients and their guests. I've been in the senior living industry for over 18 years and had the chance to visit Silvergate San Marcos a couple of times over the years for various partnership opportunities and events. I used to refer to them all the time when I worked at a competitor. There is just something very special about the community, the very welcoming residents and staff (who seem to love their job and passionate about helping others). I follow the social media pages for Silvergate and just love to watch all the fun things they are doing. I've even borrowed some ideas for my community. Joan Rink-Carroll who is the Executive Director, is one of the best in the business. She was meant to serve the senior population and leads a fantastic community. You should strongly consider this community for your loved one as they would be in the best care and social environment! read more

My parents have lived here 2 years. THE ELEVATOR DOESN'T WORK 60% of the time. They tell me in case of an emergency they'll carry my 300 lb father down stairs. Also, the water goes off weekly. The ac didn't work during the hottest season and they're grossly short staffed. I put my parents in here for peace of mind, having had cancer myself and I've taken them to MORE appointments than I ever did!!! There's no one here to help. Weekends? No staff... fishsticks?! REALLY?! Upon completion of this review, they're still begging me to remove it and threatening my GRIEVING father with eviction over the truth!!!! BTW, don't pay any attention to response from Joan Rink! She'll pee on you and tell you it's raining. They've begged me to take down this true review... as my mother died and they're threatening dad, not allowing him to grieve. She literally walked into his apartment and said she couldn't wait for him to move! So, we listened to Joan Fink and moved Dad immediately because she repeatedly tormented him about leaving. Now, we're hiring an attorney to get his deposit back! They booted him out and kept his money! THIEVES!!! Also, what started all this mess was during mom's funeral, $20,000 of all her jewelry was stolen! Miraculously, after reporting it to Joan Fink, she said, it's not stolen, it's just missing. 3 days later, the Sheriff shows up and Miraculously the next day, all but 5items returns! I MOVED DAD TO SANTIANNA IN CARLSBAD. A GORGEOUS, CLEAN, ELEVATOR WORKS, GREAT FOOD, WONDERFUL MANAGEMENT, TONS OF ACTIVITIES, 10/DAY! TODAY DAD SAID HE FINALLY CAN GRIEVE MOM. HE'S SO HAPPY THERE! RUN. 2 months later... and they're still trying to steal from my father!!! Dad gets a call from the bank and he is told Silvergate took $3,000 out of his account! REALLY?!!!Thank God he checked so the charges could be reversed! What are they doing to dementia patients who are being robbed by them? Oh my God!!!! read more

My Mother spent her last 3 years of life at Silver Gate. She really loved the place , breakfast was he favorite meal. I only hope that when I need a place like Silver Gate it will still be available. When dad first started experiencing memory loss, we decided to look for a facility specializing in memory care san diego and so glad silvergaterr.com/memory-... was one of those we visited. It's a nice community, the staff is very helpful, the environment and surroundings is great and the whole place is very clean. The care that the residents receive, from what I saw, was very nice and pleasant and you can really tell that they are all well taken care of. It does my heart good to see him so happy and well cared for. read more

After touring 3 other memory care communities in the area, a year ago, I decided to place my 95 year old friend in Memory Care at Silvergate and I'm glad I did. I've noticed that the staff works as a team very well. They include me as part of the care team which I believe, is the key to a good senior care community. The Memory Care Suites are different than any other memory care community I checked out. In the building there are 6 wings called "neighborhoods". Each neighborhood has 6 bedrooms which are off a great room....like a house. This allows the staff to keep a better eye and ear on the residents. My friend is almost totally blind does not feel isolated any more, which is a tremendous comfort to her. She can hear everything that is going on in the great room and they can hear her if she's in her apartment, which is not very often. The caregivers have been successful at getting her involve in activities. My friend is on about 18 medications and over the past year there have been about 5 doctor-ordered changes in doses or in the medication. Silvergate communicates well with her assorted doctors and with me, her POA for health care, to assure that we all are understanding what the current medication list contains. She also needs a low sodium diet, and is a picky eater so the kitchen has been working with me on that with great success. Trips to the doctors in Rancho Bernardo are not only handled by their transportation department but the driver sets the appointment and arranges for a caregiver to go with her if I can't. The caregivers I've met have endless patience and "get" my friend--her special needs, and preferences. Silvergate is family owned, and last I heard, the owner's mother is living there. They are building another complex with 3 levels of care in Rancho Bernardo and have another one in Fallbrook. Bottom line, my friend has actually improved over the past year and we could not ask for a better community for her. read more

In 2022: Silvergate has SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED their rates, due to new owners focused on profits, not residents. As a result, I was forced to move my mother in April 2022, to find more affordable care. I was grateful to find a NEWER and QUIETER facility, with more care staff, and a pool, for $3,000 A MONTH LESS than Silvergate - thank you Meridian. Don't let the remodeled front lobby fool you. The plumbing at Silvergate frequently breaks. Attending staff are sparse and slow. Look for yourself: plywood has covered the building exterior for over a month, where a car from the busy street outside crashed into the building. Care charges for Meridian, with my mother assessed in April 2022: $1,400 a month. Silvergate's charge for the same level of care: $3,800 a month! That's $2,400 MORE EACH MONTH. I was advised to move my mother into memory care, despite her NOT having a dementia diagnosis (evaluated by 2 separate Kaiser doctors in April 2022). Why? Because Silvergate didn't want to actually deliver her the level of care they were charging us for ($3,800/month). And of course... Memory Care is more $$. Silvergate is about profits, not residents. You can do better for your loved ones than Silvergate. read more

Silvergate San Marcos is a fantastic retirement community. I run a networking group for people who work with Seniors in any way, so I have been in numerous communities like this throughout the county. Silvergate is my favorite. In fact, although I'm only in my mid 50's, I've already told my kids that this is my "place of choice" when I am at the age of moving into an independent care or assisted living facility. Silvergate isn't your most plush or extravagant retirement community- nor by far, your most expensive one out there. But it IS beautifully decorated throughout. The food is some of the best I've seen. Always tasty and delicious. I have recommended it to many people I know, and I continue to recommend it. One of the greatest features about Silvergate is that it is privately owned. Many of these type of communities are owned by large corporations. What's the difference you might ask? Well, when a large corporation owns a place like this, some "bean counter' in Bofunk Nebraska looks at the bottom line, decides it's not making enough, fires everyone, and starts over. Real nice when Grandma has grown to know and love her caretakers, servers, marketing people, janitorial staff and chef. Suddenly, people she sees everyday, and loves are gone, and there is a whole new team, unknown to her! At Silvergate, many of the employees have been there for a number of years. They all seem to love working there, and the residents seem to love them. Another great part of Silvergate, is that they have independent care, assisted living and a special Alzheimer's unit, which is beautiful, and thought out for those living there with Alzheimer's. Silvergate will change all of those preconceived notions people have about "old people's homes" and will make you understand how fabulous retirement living is for people! Silvergate Memory Care facility is just a pretty prison. Our Dad was forced to go in there by the Power Of Attorney and so was our Mom. She didn't even have Dementia or anything like that. Silvergate went out of their way to kiss the P.O.A's B _ _ _ and made it difficult for us to have phone calls or visit. We couldn't see both parents at the same time because they never had enough staff. We were not allowed to make any videos or take any pictures with our parents and they monitored our visits harshly. Our Dad was so over-drugged on Seroquel (he was never given that before) that we were never able to have a good visit. He slurred his words, could no longer walk. It was "One Flew Over The Cuck-Coos Nest" all over again. They say that they provide the best of care.... that is NOT true. Our Dad declined so fast.... it was pathetic. Always sad and crying and asking us when he could go home with us. The visits were emotionally BRUTAL to endure. NOT ONCE was he happy in there. He hated that place and they wouldn't let him leave. If he complained or started acting out.... they just drugged him some more. He was in the early stages of Dementia and shouldn't have even been there. He should have lived another 5 more years but in their Great care.... he passed away a week ago....... less than a year at Silvergate. Thanks for Nothing! read more

I see that most of these reviews were from the years prior to the administrative change, and I can agree that the kudos are what had me choose it over every other place visited. However, in 2019, what was working was traded in for the typical motto-spouting, form-duplicating, double-speaking corporate distancing that absolutely wasn't what I had signed on for to serve as the end of my mother's life. The care staff is priceless and the volunteers are angels, but the lack of governance and understanding, especially in appreciating that these residents are still worthy of human attention, was an immediate and obvious downward spiral. For anyone struggling with memory loss, having different people rotate in and out of their privacy, living with rampant theft of all belongings and being lied to when asking a question is beyond disrespectful; it is classic cruelty. I know the new "leadership" must surely be equipped with knowledge of age-related care, but there was no sign of having the slightest comprehension or judgment of it. If the interest and ability of the pod caregivers was enough, this would be a place of happiness. Unfortunately, the ones running the show are pretty miserable and it does indeed trickle down. Now that I have moved my mother to a better place, my heart is breaking for those left behind - stuck during this pandemic. No matter how clean and friendly the presentation, you'd be wise to run from this one. read more

I wish I had the time to explain all of the good things my Dad said about Silvergate. He was reluctant to come initially but then loved every minute living there. He raved about the food, the people, the amenities. His statement that sums up his feeling was he said everyone should have the opportunity to experience living like he did there before passing.
