As I entered my adult years I always told myself that I should catch a show here some time. I'm happy to say that I FINALLY made it in. A couple of my close friends and I caught a Leading Ladies performance. The place itself is so quaint and charming. It was a packed house for sure!! I recommend showing up earlier than 10 mins before showtime. The performance was amazing. I had tears streaming down my face the whole first half. The actors were genius. Really threw themselves into their roles and engaged the audience with every word and facial expression. It was so good that I'm going back to see the same show again and plan on going to a couple of other shows scheduled this year. It was a great experience and I'd highly recommend giving it a shot.

Long story short as I was scrolling through the feed on that blue app I saw an ad for a horror themed circus that promised extra fright. Curiously I pondered at the date and thought why the heck not. Then as I looked at the website I discovered it was being hosted right at the Kimo. The light bulb in my head clicked on and I thought let me see if a friend wants to join so I can make a better decision. Needless to say I waited to buy a ticket. Why you ask? Well Ill be honest I wasn't quite sure at the time. Then fast forward to last weekend and the same ad appeared with a beautiful promotion setting a price I just couldn't refuse. I just knew I had to go. My friend canceled on me but that was ok because when I stepped through those door it was a refreshing experience. I couldn't help but get lost in its great grandeur. As I entered the seating area I looked around and the vibe had me so excited. The show was phenomenal. I had a really great time. I'm so glad I went. Not only did I get to see the inside of this place for the first time but I got to experience a show here which made it so much more special. I look forward to returning for the next show here!

Even within the local performing arts community, few artists know that Albuquerque boasts a…read moresurprisingly vibrant, expansive theatre scene. A 2014 American Theatre article tallied more than 40 performance companies throughout the city, more than 60 in the state. There aren't many avenues for working actors; the vast majority of New Mexican artists give their creative blood voluntarily, simply because they're compelled to breathe life into an art form that's famously always dying. And it's this kind of dedication, passion and energy that can, occasionally, deliver a performance that's truly memorable, sometimes unforgettable. I witnessed one such show a couple of weeks ago at the Black Cat Cultural Center, in Nob Hill -- a venue that used to house Aux Dog Theatre Company. I was there to watch "Life Sucks" by Aaron Posner, a modern take on Chekov's Uncle Vanya. It absolutely didn't disappoint, and honestly, I fully anticipated a let-down. Blame the pandemic. Blame my unfamiliarity with the current Burque scene. I anticipated classic community theatre, you know what I'm talking about: clunky set design, amature talent, an audience of friends and family. What I witnessed was a cast dedicated to the material. Whatever I initially felt the actors lacked, they more than compensated by pure ambition. This was, quite simply, the gift of true community theatre: meditated suspension of disbelief. I'm really glad I stumbled across an ad for Actors Studio 66, and managed to speak with a couple of the Board members, Linda and Tim. This company is committed to presenting diverse stories about diverse people, and based on their inaugural show, they're on the right track. I'm also thrilled there's new dramatic life in this historic neighborhood. If you're looking for the next cool theatre company to support, check 'em out.

I'm here tonight watching "The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told" on an appropriately stormy night. This play, written about twenty years ago by Paul Rudnick, has been brought back at a perfect time in American Cultural history by director Dagmar Garza. The play is a reinvisioning of the creation story familiar in the Bible in the expected way for a queer-revisioning: with Adam and Steve. The play is much more complex, however, than just making a statement about homosexuality. We the audience watch as the characters discover the world and grapple with philosophical questions as if they were children, unaware of dogma. The play also includes an interesting narrative style, with the "Stage Director," a character in the play, providing the kind of narration traditionally supplied by a chorus. The play is mostly funny and bawdy. As far as being philosophically insightful, it lacks any powerful punch that might elevated it beyond the level of entertainment. Nevertheless, the show is well acted, timely, and interesting. I recommend you see it before it closes on the 28th. PS. Billy Mallard really stole the show as gay Santa. And as for The Desert Rose: I'll be back. :)

The director had taken stickers with you name on it and placed it on the chairs. She had a list at the door of who went where. When we complained it was to no avail. We were all mixed up in different locations. The tickets were expensive and nothing was said about assigned seats. I attend community theater frequently and have never seen anything like this. The theater is not very nice and the acoustics were terrible. I would not recommend this theater and certainly would not go to the venue again.

New Mexico's only dedicated jazz club, according to owner Tracey Whitney (famously a Ray Charles backup singer), features local talent Thursdays and Saturdays, and Ms Whitney herself Friday nights. Finally! A date night worthy of true gussied-up fashion! Ladies, wear some nylons! Gentlemen, wear a tie! You won't feel entirely out of place in jeans and a collared shirt, but come on, let's keep at least one Albuquerque nightclub classy! $35 tickets for showtimes at 6:30 and 8:30. Make a reservation though, because apparently they're full-up for almost every show. You might otherwise be bummed to show up and find no seats available. We went to the later show Friday night and hung around afterwards for another 30/45 min. They weren't rushing to shove us out the door, and we had ample time to finish our DELICIOUS Old Fashioned as Ms Whitney and her bandmates mingled with the crowd. They (the performers) were wonderful, btw, if you care for those old American Songbook Jazz standards (I love em!) and somewhat more contemporary tunes interpreted in the same style. (Although, other bands they feature lean more heavily towards Blues.) They were charming in their bandmate banter and crowd engagement. They called on people celebrating special occasions and encouraged a singalong for one song in particular. The space is draped in blue velvet and set up well, where all of the limited intimate tables have a great view, and there are lounge chairs directly facing the stage. It could be a little dimmer to enhance the sultry feel, but I suppose folks like me need the brighter light anyway, to read the cocktail menu by! Service was gracious, atmosphere was legitimate for a jazz club living in Burque, and the cocktail prices aren't unreasonably high. I'm so excited to have a place like this in town! I kinda wanna keep it a secret, but more than that, I want Babydoll's to thrive! So get cleaned up and go check it out! And keep it classy.
