Dr. Tang is a gem in Oakland Chinatown - he's the latest in a long line of traumatologists (in Cantonese "Tiet-Dah") who learned how to treat injuries from his father, who learned it from his father, back a couple of generations! Turns out his dad has his own clinic a few doors down! Simon trained in Hong Kong, lived here for a couple decades and thus speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, and English pretty fluently. He is great at what he does and charges reasonably for what he can accomplish. Today's visit for my chronic neck injuries lasted about 30-40 minutes (I didn't keep track of time but it was less than an hour) and involved some history taking, examination, education on specific exercises I could do for wrist and shoulder injuries, then a focused deep tissue massage, and application of a heated herbal poultice. Dr. Tang has a great bedside manner and is focused (he massages each tenderpoint for 1-3 minutes, on a timer). All this for $80. He's much better than the Tiet-Da doctors I went to in Hong Kong. In general, daily treatment for acute injuries can get you better within a few treatments (depending on severity) and longstanding chronic injuries typically resolve with daily treatment for about three weeks. I'm not sure what this was. It was not Chinese Tui Na, which is what Mr. Tang said he provided when I asked. It was more of a vigorous deep tissue massage that was focused on the area of pain and stretching and lasted maybe 15 minutes. He then applied a poultice. There was only one pot on his stove, and he didn't do any traditional tongue or pulse diagnosis, which tells me it's something he "prescribes" for everyone with pain. I did not get any pain relief from the treatment. I am disappointed because I wanted and expected Traditional Chinese medicine but got some other kind of hybrid treatment. Maybe it works for some, but, unlike what I love about Chinese medicine, and like what I don't love about western medicine, it seemed too limited and impersonal for me. Over a month ago, I wrenched my back while running. I was experiencing pain and stiffness in my lower back, groin and iT bands. I went from being a healthy athlete to walking like an old man. I went to a chiropractor, followed by two Kaiser doctors who referred me to physical therapy, followed by Thai massage. I have a hot tub, massage gun, and heat pads -- nothing worked. Simon healed my shoulder pain...something that the western medicine did not do. My shoulder pain was so severe that gave me a headache, nausea and vomiting. The pain was so severe that I had to call in sick for 1-2 days when it happened. This episodes got more frequent from every month to every two weeks to every week and that is when I went to see my primary care physician. My PCP referred me to a neurologist and was told my arm nerves were fine. Got referred to an orthopedic and had X-rays and an MRI and was told everything was fine and that maybe was tension headaches and to take Tylenol. When I had another episode with my pain scale 10/10 I decided to googled sport medicine and found Simon. First appointment with Simon it took him 3 minutes to hear my signs and symptoms and do an evaluation and tell me it was "Frozen shoulder ". He massaged my shoulder for about 20 minutes (The massage was so painful I felt like crying.). Simon ended the session putting a green/black paste and wrapping it with a dressing. At the end of first treatment pain scale was 6/10 and made another appointment for the next day. That night the pain was 4/10. The following day Simon focused where the pain had moved. This time the massage pain felt more tolerable. And at the end made the last appointment Simon recommended. I had sciatica awhile back. PT and chiropractor wasn't effective. In desperate need of help and did not want to constantly drink pain killers that Kasier's physician kept prescribing to me... Simon Tang to the recuse. At first I was quite skeptical but I went through the whole process. At the time, I wasn't able to stand up completely straight or walk without pain. Rotating my hip side to side, front and back hurts as well. I had 2-3 sess every week for about a month where he elbowed my back, hip, and leg (really painful fyi) but I was finally able to move my hip without any pain. Although, I still had this stabbing pain near my right ankle/leg, I continue 1 sess per week for another month where we focus on just that. I have had a swollen ankle for 6 months and pitted edema in my leg related to this (I do alot of high impact exercise). I've now seen Simon twice for foot massage and his therapeutic massage and chinese herbs have definitely helped, my swelling has reduced. He is extremely knowledgeable, explains why I have pain in a particular area of my foot, and then is able to work it out. When he knows it will be painful he says "tickle, tickle." His English is excellent, his small studio is very clean and he is willing to make an appointment. His prices are reasonable. I am also seeing a chiropractor and doing foot exercises so I can't attribute my reduced swelling only to Simon however it coincided with adding his skills to my treatment mix. I pulled an odd muscle in my wrist from lifting something heavy in the wrong way. I thought it would go away, but the pain persisted and got worse over a period of 4 months. It got so that I couldn't even lift or grasp certain objects without pain. When I first went to see Simon, I thought it would be difficult because I had waited so long. He felt my wrist and knew what was wrong without me telling him! I guess he could feel how the muscle was inflamed or something. He worked on my wrist every day for a couple months (with a special kind of massage). Sometimes the massages were painful, but in a good, healing kind of way. I wore an herbal patch after each session, overnight. Simon warned me not to eat spicy food or read meat while wearing the patch. A couple times I did eat spicy food and my skin reacted (becoming itchy and red). It was very interesting how the herbs affected my skin, but did no damage. If I avoided those foods, it was fine. After a while, my pain went away. It felt like a miracle. And the pain hasn't come back since all of this first happened, almost three years ago. I would highly recommend Simon.
