Through a personal need to dispose large amount of such, I found out the answer is a Transfer Station operated by Miller Waste Management. Located on Rodick Road near the city's electronic and hazardous collection center, the transfer station is a fully functioning waste management facility that opens to public on weekends and some holidays. Public can drive their garbage in residential cars or trucks to the station to dispose the waste for $8/dump, subject to weight and quantity limit. I believe the current limit is 6 bags or 50kg, whichever is larger. If your junk are tires, large appliances, furniture, even large amount of construction materials, the cost is by tonne or by unit. How it works is you drive up to a booth and answer the operator's questions. When your car is next to operator booth, your car is actually sitting on a scale. The operator records the weight of your car. S/he directs you to a drive up to a monstrous sized warehouse that collects garbage and so on. You wait for your turn to drive in and haul the junk out of your car yourself and pile it onto other junk. This is a 100% self serve place, so bring some muscles if your dump is heavy. When done, you drive out following a preset route painted on the ground to the other side of the operator booth onto the scale. Another operator will talk to you. S/he weights your car and tell you the charge. You can pay by cash or credit card (as far as I remember). What I find interesting is that, despite the fee schedule states a bag limit, the people there really care only the weight. So unless your junk is super heavy, the fee is $8 per disposal. For large home appliance, this place charges $26/unit, whereas the City of Markham will collect from your curb at $11/unit. Of course, this wonderful deal has a catch: you need an appointment, and the City only collect once a month from your street. Another note is some of the stuffs that you can dispose here for a fee, the Elgin Mills Community Recycling Center (Elgin Mills and Leslie) will allow you to dispose for free. These stuffs are recyclable. The rest Elgin Mills center will collect for $10, whereas Miller charges $8. Therefore, depending on how willing you are to drive to Elgin Mills Road, and how much and how urgent you must dispose, you can significantly lower the cost. But Miller transfer station is an option when you have too much garbage that you want to be rid of quickly. Plus the City simply doesn't collect large amount of construction materials on regular pick up days.

Move was supposed to start at 12 PM, Truck was not available by 3:30 PM; I was asked to postpone the move for next day when I and my wife took a day off just for the move; Hence it was a loss of pay for my wife. Since the move finished around 11; she again has to take day off the next day. They were dependent on U-Haul for providing truck and did not have their own trucks and they call themself Movers who do professional business Out of your 4 men in service; 3 had their first day on the Job and only one person had some know-how, No Equipment , no planning at all 3 of them were not aware how to dismantle the recliners/sofas/bed; Neither they have the right tool. Hence we have to dismantle the bed ourselves with my own tools. One of your work men introduced us as Rahul while his original name was Gaurav. Despite repeatedly pointing out his laziness and failure to keep pace with others, the other three men were getting increasingly annoyed. Even at the move-in Location, He was sent prior to trucking with my wife in Sienna Car which carried smaller boxes so that Elevator could be started, He didn't start the move which wasted half an hour. Also driving time was 30 mins but he drove so slow that he took 45 mins, witnessed by my wife Since the booking of Elevator time in the move-in condo lapsed, I had to make numerous requests to building management to get us accomodated. In this restlessness, there was no time for wrapping furniture resulting in damages to my work station , Sofas & recliners. I had a Gout Attack last week and took your services for convenience but I along with my brother had to do major lifting of boxes along with loaders. At the new condo location, Work men were seen dragging the furniture in the corridor instead of lifting, which was pointed out by the security guard of the building through CCTV which might have brought a penalty. In all hustle bustle, my mountain bike is left on the move out location worth $450 which is still missing and no Action taken by owner Anuj to address it. Instead they declined that they left anything. They even did not gave a receipt as I made transaction on cash and they cannot generate it for previous day. There were numerous shortcomings and the entire day just went into stress that I cannot even write in one page. Run Away from this company.

We do not really know where garbage, compost, or recycling actually end up, but at least I can do my bit with non-recyclable containers and items. Every time I drop off materials my conscience is a little clearer as I am not throwing these items in the garbage or recycling bins. Huge sign advising you where to drop items off 2) the price has jumped to $10...still a great deal for a trunk full of garbage 3) the dude in the booth now gives you a printed receipt ! 4) I've bumped my 3 stars to 4 because of the changes Original Review From a strictly environmental standpoint, this place is fantastic, as it allows you to drop of items which you can see your neighbours trying to hide in their garbage bags. You see, the city of Vaughan has very strict garbage rules but a very robust recycling program. I'm allowed 3 bags of garage every two weeks, with unlimited recycling (bottles, cans, paper, cardboard, etc) and food waste (green bin). However, the 3 bag rule encompasses ALL non-blue box (recyclable) and green bin (organic waste) items. For example, if you change a toilet, it counts as an item, which drops your garbage bag allotment down to 2 bags. You can purchase extra garbage "tags" from the city (for a nominal fee) which you place on the additional items, but without those tags, the items are left at the curb....the 3 bag rule is pretty enforced. A few times a year we have "double up" pickups...which allows for 6 bags of garbage/waste, but sometimes you don't want things piling up in the garage until a double up day. The McCleary Environmental Centre is the place that accepts items that we used to throw out in our garbage, but which we now know can harm the environment. Fairly easy to locate, you drive in and dispose of household waste items (drywall, tiles, lightbulbs, scrap metal, etc)....in clearly labelled bins. Most items don't require a disposal fee, other than the cost of getting it down to the McCleary Centre. However, some household waste items require a "fee" to be disposed of......on my last visit I was charged $7 for a trunk-full of stuff. This is where I experienced something which left a sour taste in my mouth...and is quite shocking at the lack of controls in place. The city employee is in a booth...you drive up, advise him what you have to dispose of, he asks where you live, he advises you of the fee (in my case, $7)...you pay cash...and he points you in the right direction. I would suggest you have exact change...as on my last visit, I passed a $10 bill to him and suddenly he became Mr. Chatty. When he finally pointed me in the direction to go, I had to ask for my change. He mumbled something and passed me my $3. Not saying this is this guys practice, but if he pulls this stunt on a regular basis, he could walk out with a pretty penny at the end of his shift (there is nothing in place for the city to monitor the number of cars in/out....so staff could potentially make out like bandits). They really need to put proper procedures into place to prevent the public from being ripped off, as there are unscrupulous people out there (I'm not saying this guy is......but in this case, both myself and my passenger felt like he knew exactly what he was doing). This has only happened once to me, and I've dropped items off a few times (being an avid DIYer has its downside). But still........ I've also dropped off items for their "Restore" program. It's sort of like Goodwill...you bring in gently used (or unused) items that you would normally throw out, and they have an on-site store where they resell the items. Reuse at its best. I've brought in electronics, chairs, lamps, tools, etc)...it's free of charge if the items are deemed acceptable for resale. Profits are kept by the store. So, in summary.....a great place to be environmentally conscious, just bring exact change.
