I come here once in a while with my mom, who loves this store. The owners are very nice and the store is so cute! So many great things to look at and she charges very fair prices. The painted furniture is beautiful and we actually purchased a dresser for our nursery recently and are so happy with it. I also bought matching paint to paint an end table and the owner went over the whole process with me (painting, waxing, sealing) and it turned out great! This is a great store with wonderful people and it is a true gem in Downtown Howell. read more

A favorite place to shop and I've purchased quite a few items including a wall shelf, cupboard, candles and much more. They are the only shop for miles around that sells Olde Century paint and I was thrilled to learn this as I love to decorate with antiques and primitives and Olde Century paints are the best. I spoke with a sales associate who ordered three gallons of paint for me and picked them up on a Saturday when the owner was there. I mentioned that I may need more and she said there would be no problem getting me more and I also mentioned that I may have some left and she mentioned her return policy. Actually, their return policy is an 'exchange only' policy and she said they ask that you exchange on the same day of the return. I wasn't surprised as a 'no return policy' is not all that uncommon for small businesses. My husband was able to paint the kitchen with only one of those gallons of paint (we'd already had a half gallon at home) so I called and talked with a sales associate to mention I'd be bringing a gallon back and ended up spending another $25 in the store. That gallon of paint ended up costing me $85 - no big surprise as the store is chock-full of really nice things. I was treated with courtesy the day of that day. Upon returning home my husband told me that we'd have yet another gallon left over. Great. The shop is a half an hour from home and with the price of gas, well, this was turning out to be an ex pensive project! I called the shop mid-week and mentioned I"d be bringing back another gallon of paint. I just felt it was in good standing to apologize for ordering too much and letting them know, beforehand, that I'd be returning another gallon. Apparently, the person I spoke with on the phone (a sales associate I will not name but who works there quite often) told the owner (who was away on vacation) that I'd be returning another gallon of paint. I will owe it up to adrenalin pumping and perhaps a bad morning but what happened next was the most embarrassing, humiliating experience of my life in a store. As I entered the store (she must have been watching for me) and before I could even approach the counter, this woman starts announcing, LOUDLY, "I CAN'T LET YOU DO THAT", repeating this statement several times. Truthfully, I had no idea of what she was talking about and, after placing the gallon of paint on the floor, said, "pardon me?". This woman is shaking her head, smirking and announcing over and over that she "can't do that". She said, "I spoke with the owner and she said we cannot accept that paint". I was so embarrassed and surprised to hear her say this that I asked her "why?" and she said, "it's special order. What are we supposed to do with that paint?" Seriously? They sell furniture that they paint, themselves. I realized that there was no point in arguing with her as she started to go in to, "my daughter was here last week and she didn't know any better and that's why she took back the last gallon". I simply mentioned (as quietly as I could in hopes it would calm her down a bit) that the owner should not have mentioned her exchange policy to me, then". She said, smirking the whole time and still very loudly, "UH.... I DON'T THINK SHE SAID THAT". As a side note, if I'd been shopping in that store and heard the disrespectful and impolite language that sales associate was using toward a customer, I would have walked out. That is, in fact, what I did as I didn't want this woman to work herself up into a frenzy. She'd obviously been waiting for me all morning and, as I said, her adrenaline must have been at an all-time high and there was no use in even attempting to argue with her so I politely picked up the gallon and walked out, red-faced. But talk about an embarrassing scene! It has been suggest to me by several friends who have had their homes featured in Country Sampler magazine that I do the same. I have considered it and would have mentioned the paint colors and where I have purchased my paint - at Simply Charming in Howell, MI. Needless to say that will not be happening and I will never set foot in that shop again. In closing, let's just say that Simply Charming is not simply charming. read more

This is a wonderful little store in charming downtown Howell! The ladies working there are super helpful and accommodating. The merchandise is lovely and unique, and priced appropriately. My husband and I stumbled upon this sweet shop a few years ago & purchased several pieces of furniture, and some small decorative pieces on our first visit. We have been back several times and never leave without purchasing something. The prices are appropriate and the owners are so nice. I purchased a few items from Simply Charming. I have always had great service. The owner even offered to teach me her painting technique and her husband loaded my items in my car. I will definitely be going back there for more furniture. The quality and price are great! The lady who had issues returning her paint seems a little unreasonable to me. Everyone knows you can't return custom paint colors... Even at big chains. Why try to bully a small downtown shop that has unique, cool and inexpensive products?? read more
