The Hospice at Mercy said he was not critical enough for their in-patient services, so we had the choice of Dad going back to his Assisted Living home or to a nursing home to die. Assisted Livings are a social model where people live who need daily assistance. Dad had been at the AL for 1 1/2 years at this point and it was his home. The hospital Hospice handed me a list of agencies that provide Home Health Aides for end-of-life work. The only option was to hire a third-party care agency to administer this kind of care 24/7 for as long as Dad lasted. After a maddening 2 days calling every agency on the list, THANK GOD I found Better Home. Right away, they were a cut above many of the agencies I talked to. The intake person was competent and thoughtful of my difficult circumstances and worked to guide me though several decisions. They also could provide experienced Aides within a couple of days as opposed to several agencies I called. Paying immediately before even discussing what was needed was the opening gambit from one agency I encountered! At the AL, we were so lucky to have the Better Home Aides who really knew their business. They were competent, caring, informative and experienced. Dying is hell and witnessing it is sobering. Dad lasted 1 1/2 weeks in Hospice and my brother and I were there participating in his care almost every day. The Aides welcomed our presence and educated us. They were respectful of our needs in letting go of our Dad. I am so grateful to BH for the massive assistance they provided. Especially, I want to mention and thank publicly Sonia, Victoria, Leonard, Delphine (overnight), the very kind intake nurse who came Day 1(cannot recall name), and everyone I dealt with in the office such as Karen and the Financial person (cannot recall name). Their competence across the board made such a difference during the maelstrom of dying. Dying at the AL had hidden costs. The Mercy Hospital Hospice Good Shepherd provided Medicare-covered Hospice Services such as having an RN (Jerry) very helpfully guiding us. GS also provided the bed, oxygen, and some supplies to get us started. They provide a mandated 13 months of bereavement services, also. The AL provided "Room and Board" (no board as Dad could no longer eat), cleaning, and did the massive amounts of laundry we had. They also lent an Aide here and there to assist turning Dad. Long term AL Aides who knew us came in to cheer Dad and us, but were not involved in the care at this point. The rest of the work and direction was provided by the Better Homes Aides I mentioned above. The 24/7 Aides were $32.50/hour, but that added up to approximately $5000 for the first week. The AL had already been paid for the month so this third-party care was additional. There was also lag time in getting needed supplies, so I had to go to a med supply store myself a few times. The hospital Hospice told me they would "pick up" 4 hours of care/day from agencies on that phone list that I was originally handed. That was eventually true, but I had to fight for that discount during the 1 1/2 weeks Dad was dying and I was at his bedside. I wholeheartedly recommend Better Home for many of the reasons stated above. There is cost involved but the competent help they provided was invaluable to our family.

Sometimes you have to try a few aides to find the right fit for your family - the right fit for us has been Blanca. Unesh is our aide coordinator, and he has done an excellent job with communications, and trying to find the right person. Raj is the Operations Manager, and he has been a big help guiding my family with perspective in the home aide industry, and with Medicaid decisions. He is always accessible and has also been a pleasure to work with. I hope to meet the owner one day - she is a former nurse, and therefore brings a great perspective to a company that cares for people in their homes.

From my initial call the office staff walked me through the intake process which was very smooth, and a short time later a Nurse practitioner was at my house doing an initial assessment, in which she addressed all of our issues and concerns and also referred us to all the necessary specialists and agencies. I am truly grateful for all of the care and help they provided me and my family and would highly recommend them to anyone that is in need of a highly skilled, and caring medical provider to come to the home. I waited a month after my mother's passing to write this review so I could have some distance and…read moreperspective from the events. I contracted with Alvita to care for my mother during the last two months of her life after she was injured in a fall. I paid for 24 hour home care seven days a week. Other than Fabienne, I found the caregivers sorely lacking in the most basic of qualities such as companionship and emotional support. Also, other than Fabienne, the one on one care for which they were hired (toileting, hygiene assistance, dressing, grooming, feeding, etc) was mostly delegated by them to the staff at the assisted living facility where my mother resided, which negated the whole point of hiring them in the first place. Chronic lateness was also the norm. Most arrived 10-20 minutes late for the start of the night shift The night shift crew was especially problematic. In addition to generally not performing the basic tasks for which they were hired ("it's not my job" was the common refrain, even though it literally was their job), they often did not even stay in the same room as my mother who was a fall risk. Some slept on the sofa in the living room during the night shift, some spent the night shift doing schoolwork in a separate room, and some spent hours of the night shift on their phone in the hallway outside of the apartment. The complaints became so numerous from the staff at the assisted living facility and from the hospice nurses that I eventually had to change agencies for the night shift. Three of the low points during the Alvita night shift require special mention. (1) There was the night that my mother sat in her own feces for the entirety of the night. When Hospice arrived in the morning, the waste was dry and hard and had been there all night, despite a 12 hour Alvita shift. (2) Many nights, my mother was put to bed at 7 PM for convenience sake without any social interaction or kindness on the part of the aide. (3) My mother suffered a skin tear on her arm the night after I complained about the aides sleeping on the job. I was told that she injured herself, but there are no witnesses other than the Alvita aide involved. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Fabienne. She was the primary Alvita daytime aide for my mother. Fabienne went above and beyond the call of duty. She exuded kindness and compassion. She took the utmost care of my mother and treated her with dignity and respect. When Fabienne was on the job, the staff at the assisted living facility and the hospice staff took a break because everyone knew that she had everything under control. This is the level of care advertised by Alvita and the level of care that I paid for, but only Fabienne met the mark. Not only did she meet expectations, but she blew everyone away with her level of care.
