put simply, camp hope is like an adult summer camp…read more remember this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LyRMYcHwf4 that's immediately what came to mind after day one at camp hope. it's actually pretty great. hot water showers, friendly staff, food is pretty good and varied (burgers one night, jambalaya another), and the entire building has wireless (but also a computer lab if you leave your laptop at home). they have board games, playing cards, and a pool table to pass the time. lights out at 10PM and may be turned back on at 6AM. though it was truly *home* for the week and i met amazing people from all over the nation, one star is taken off because someone stole my phone charger. not cool. having said that, i'm definitely going back to camp hope when i return to volunteer again. (camp hope will stay at this location for at least another six years.)

I…read morethought the people that were there they were decent people but you know, there are some people there to have issues and yet they have good programs there that people that want to use the programs but I also realize that camp hope is not for African-American people. It's a very racist place. I also work for Michael Kay and he's a very racist person he pretends to like black people. I seen him mistreat a black man very bad and then he had me working for him. I don't know what it was about he let me go for no reason never explaining me what happened, but he's not fair. It's not African American friendly. It's not a place for African American for black people anybody of color. It's not a good place for them to go to that shelter. Unfortunately Yakima is not a place for African-American. It's a very racist Place black people will be better off going somewhere that accept black people without giving them difficulties because life itself is already difficult. And then you you and environment where you mistreated because of your color and Camp. Hope is basically, you know, a very racist place it really is. They only have one black guy that he's mixed with black and white and he's he's an Uncle Tom person and he's only one that's working there. But most of everybody there other than him is white and they have one native guy and a native girl working there. Other than that everybody else. There is Caucasian. It's a very racist place. I'm glad I'm not there anymore and life is hard enough and then you get around people that despise you because of the color and mistreat you camp. Hope is not a for a place if you occasion you get treated. Well, if you're African-American you get a treat awful, you know, I never had any write ups or anything and you know, I never got any kind of trouble but it's not a good place for African Americans. I would not recommend African-Americans to go there. I would recommend them to go to the Gospel Mission on 1st Street.

This tiny farm setting had all the fun, a playground, massive sand pit, covered dining and picnic area, ponies to ride, varied animals to feed and others to admire. Both kids and adults made their ways to each area. I thought this was a really nice little place to bring kids. Highly recommend.

WELCOME TO THE PARISH!!!!!!…read more St Bernard Parish has flourished post Hurricane Katrina. As a child, I can distinctly remember this area being not as "fun", actually NO FUN; but now there's a hospital, a WalMart, an IHOP, a Home Depot, a movie theater, a plethora of fast food eateries, shops ie dollar tree (my fav), Rue 21 & I can go on & on. There's a new state of the art high school. The police/sheriff department "seems" to be a lot better, although recently marred by scandal but what police/sheriff's department isn't, anywho. Nunez Community College has/is growing by leaps & bounds (although this seems to be the "par for the course" as of late) & is making an impact on the community at large; impressive. Unfortunate for this area, they still get lots of flooding, even now post-Katrina. All in all, I frequent the area more now than ever before. I'm quite pleased with the progress in the area & hope they continue.

RUBARB is a community bike project located in the 9th ward, in the back of St. Mary of the Angels…read morechurch (where Common Ground used to be headquartered). RUBARB stands for Rusted Up Beyond All Recognition Bikes, and began when, after the storm, volunteers began pulling unused bikes out of garbage piles and fixing them up for both residents and volunteers. It is completely volunteer run and thus is only open Mon. 10-2, Wed. 3:30-6, and Sat. 1-6. I just picked up my bike and I love it. The selection is obviously small, since it's all donated or found bikes that are fixed up by volunteers, but I got an excellently shitty Columbia 3-speed (now single-speed since it's missing shifters and gears, ha) for $50. One of the raddest things about RUBARB is their Earn-a-bike program for youth. Saturdays are dedicated to the kids, who come to learn how to fix and build their bikes, learning about parts and mechanics, eating snacks, and just hanging out. If you see a kid biking around the 8th or 9th ward, chances are they got it here. All the volunteer adults that I've met have been really great, extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. This is not a fancy place by any means. They are always in need of volunteers, art supplies, bike supples, tools, etc., so if you've got any extra resources, put them to good use here!

Another customer I met in the store said this has been going on for years, just do away with the color of the day it'll save the workers from having to remove then replace those items back on the racks.
