This place is much better than the prices may leave you expecting. I stayed at Site 61 for 10 days and couldn't have picked a better hostel to stay in. The building is gorgeous on its own, but the art, decorations, and pictures of fellow travelers on the walls endeared me to the place. The kitchen is small, but serviceable. Staff provide some free food and snacks if you're down a buck, or just feel like having a PB&J on the house. There's a small living room area with a record player, a chess board, and a dinky mini-guitar that I strummed on a few times. The best part of the experience, besides it being a very clean place, was definitely the staff. They're volunteers that manage the property in exchange for their stay and some private amenities, so they truly didn't need to do more than the bars minimum. However, the bare minimum was far from what they provided. They were attentive to the guests, fun to chat with, and always kept the place in good shape. A few of us offered to help with minor chores just to give them a break from how hard they're always working, but they'd simply ask us to have the best time possible and continue about their work. I highly recommend staying at this hostel. If you're a queer person like myself that gets worried about safety or acceptance, be it of your sexuality, gender, pronouns, or presentation, you can relax in this place. Respect your fellow human, respect the space, and they'll take the best care of you. read more

I did enjoy my stay, but you have to know what you're getting into in New Orleans and decide if you want to be right in the middle of everything and spend lots of $ or get something that you can afford on a budget. I stayed for a couple of weeknights in November, so that might shade my experience. I only saw the owner/manager when I checked in, but she was nice and full of knowledge of the area. I did come with a car, and although I was able to easily find parking and my car didn't get broken into, I would highly suggest just not driving to New Orleans. That's whether you stay here or elsewhere. Parking prices and driving habits are very Chicago-esque. And there is a large homeless population all around town, so it's hard to tell where is safe and where is not. The owner actually suggested the streetcar which was only 6 blocks away, and that or an Uber is probably your best bet. Especially if you'll be stumbling back. If you plan to come in when it's particularly hot or cold (well as cold as it gets there), I would look to other reviews as far as how cold or hot the house gets, as there didn't seem to be a lot of temperature control. Just a fan that I saw in my room. I was fine, but I had great weather while I was there. I can't vouch for temperature extremes. Other than that, the noise was... I'm sure much quieter than if you stayed closer to the tourist traps, but you're still very much in an urban setting. Road noise, random alarms, conversations from the street... if that bugs you, you'll probably have to stay in the suburbs or in one of the overpriced hotel towers. Past that, it's a hostel. It's safe and clean, but it's not going to be for everyone. read more

Great place located on the bus line in Mid City. This place was right in my price range and seemed to have good reviews. I decided to check it out. The hostel is right off the 39 bus and on the E2 line from the airport. The walk from the trolley at night along S Telemachus felt relatively safe too. The front door had a code-based lock in use at all times. They have several video cameras set up inside and out. The place is very clean and quiet. Nice linens and firm beds. They have lockers but on the first floor (not in any rooms on the second floor). One of the workers said it was because there wasn't enough room but there was definitely space in my 4 bed dorm. There are several individual bathrooms, each with a toilet, sink, and a nice shower. Continental breakfast starts late at 8 am and includes oatmeal, bagels, Orange juice and coffee. There is also a nice outdoor patio in the back. I recommend booking on their site directly. It is cheaper than bulk websites like Hostelworld. They charge a $2 booking fee and a $5 key deposit. read more

THE ROOMS I stayed in a mixed dorm (had three bunks) with shared bathroom. Although the place looked a little worn (nothing bad about that) it was all definitely clean. My bed sheet was a bit thin--the temp seemed to get chillier with the night--but I just tossed my extra towels over me for warmth. I was able to complete lots of internet work in the calm common room although a group watched television and chatted nearby. LOCATION AND SURROUNDINGS There's also a good-sized, cemented back yard with small shed and lots of chairs for relaxing or hanging out. Although there's a lot of things nearby (grocery, restaurants, small stores)... just like a lot of New Orleans, I wouldn't be jogging out there by myself at night. I didn't experience anything bad... it's just a feeling. Parking wasn't that bad--although I wasn't able to grab the few spots in front, I found street parking a block away. SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY Gene (or Jean?) the owner was a constant presence without being overbearing. Very soft-spoken, she quietly read a book on the side at night or fussied over making sure the complimentary breakfast was well-stocked in the morning. Although I was in a full room, the partiers kept their noise away from us and didn't bring any mess back. Great experience over all. read more

A buddy and myself spent three nights here and I was very please. The private bathrooms and Continental breakfast make it well worth the extra $10 or so that it costs for the other local hostels. The owners are very pleasant and helpful and the atmosphere is great. They had just opened and are still in the process of adding the sci-fi atmosphere so can't really comment on that. read more

This is a great place to stay when in New Orleans and trying to be cost-effective. The hostel is laid out very well with several social rooms, kitchen, and a charming outdoor area that is perfect for lounging or socializing. Each of the staff who work here are so friendly and helpful and really strive to very hospitality-driven. I like the fact that it is a short walk to the streetcar (about 5 blocks) or a brief walk to the bus stop just across the street. Taking an Uber/ Lyft to Canal Street may be $9 or $10 depending on time of day. I have stayed here at least five times and may be back in the near future. read more

I love this hostel! With a southern home vibe, Site 61 is surprisingly clean and spacious. The building retains an antebellum feel but because it's recently renovated so you still get the modern comfort. My favorite part about this hostel is that the hallway has eight private bathrooms, so you have the toilet, the sink, and shower in each bathroom - there's virtually no way you won't find an unoccupied bathroom! The bed is super comfortable too, which is absolutely perfect for resting after a whole night of debauchery. The hostel's only potential downside is its somewhat sketchy neighborhood, but really, you should be hopping on and off your cab ride and enter the building anyway, so it's not like you'll be walking around outside too much. Oh yeah, it's only a 10 minute ride from French Quarter and the Garden District, so if you are a tourist in NOLA who don't want to splurge on hotels, Site 61 is your pick! read more

I only stayed here one night briefly so take my review with a grain of salt! PROS: - Personal bathrooms (shower, toilet, sink in each one and all fairly new) - Towel and sheets are included - Organized and clean - Communal kitchen and living room areas with lockers - It was only $36 a night considering I stayed during Jazz Festival week - Close to some good bars and restaurants - Security cameras and door code for everyones safety - WIFI included CONS: - It's either near a highway or a busy street because you can clearly hear cars driving by all throughout the night - Like others have stated, the area seems a little sketch. I was reassured that it wasn't dangerous but, probably like NOLA in general, I was definitely more worried about walking alone at night - Some might consider it charming but I actually thought the dim lighting in the rooms and the wooden nature of the building/bunks were a little creepy. Might have had to do with it being located somewhere a little more isolated and me just being paranoid SUGGESTIONS: (in case someone is reading this) - Having individual lights for each bed/bunk - Larger fans? Rooms got a bit stuffy even with the window open - Rooms that lock automatically behind you Overall they were very accommodating and organized. I checked in later and had to check out really early in the morning and they were able to help me with that. Everyone seems friendly and it was the perfect place for a short stay. read more

I lived in the Lower Garden district in NOLA from 1998-2002, and had been trying to get back for a visit since 2006-- I finally made it happen in April 2016. A lot had changed... once upon a time there used to be only three hostels in NOLA-- now there must be close to 20 if you count some of the guest houses. Unfortunately many of the hostels, including those in my former neighborhood, are now "age-restricted"-- i.e. you have to be 25 or under to stay in a dorm room-- if you are over 25 they are happy to rent you an expensive private room which costs the same for one person as it would for two people splitting it (going rate around $150 a night-- say WHAT?!). This is an irritating policy that some hostels in the southern latitudes of the US are adopting-- I haven't seen it in the north (yet); I first encountered this in Las Vegas and in California in 2008. I am a traveling artist over the age of 40 who goes on road trips to sell my artwork and I often stay in hostels to keep my travel budget within spec, since lodging is by far and away the most expensive of travel costs. So my range of options in NOLA was automatically narrowed. I went withArea 61 because in addition to permitting people my age to sleep in dorms, they had an exemplary and consistent reputation for cleanliness and hospitality, which I would vouch for. Everyone who works there is very friendly and the facilities are terrific. Most days there were waffles and bagels for breakfast, which was great. In fact the ONLY caveat that I have about staying here-- for the benefit of anyone like me who has issues with back pain-- the beds are very hard. I wound up using a bunch of winter clothing as something of a bed liner but I recommend bringing a foam rubber liner of some sort if you have issues of this sort. I would definitely stay again and I will just have to remember to bring one! Area 61 is in Mid-town, an area I rarely visited when I actually lived in New Orleans, and it is "sketchy" to some extent like other reviewers have noticed. However, it is very close to NOLA's Costco, Whole Foods, and one of the best local groceries, and its location turned out to be highly efficient for navigating all over town to see all of my memory places because it is close to multiple highways, major streets and bus and trolley lines. I had thought that the science fiction theme was going to be cheesy and kitschy-- like a giant flying saucer on the roof-- but in actuality it is subdued, literate and even genteel-- there is interesting SF fan art on many walls and books in the hostel library-- but nothing vulgar. The whole place has a pleasant and relaxing vibe. Since the gentrification trend another viewer mentioned is happening in every major metro (the city I live in, Minneapolis, is one of the most rapidly-gentrifying cities in the country and the skyrocketing rents reflect this), I am sure even Mid-Town will experience this. But I wouldn't worry about it too much. Area 61 gets thumbs up from me. read more

I had never stayed in a hostel before and I was a little nervous about the quality and cleanliness. I was pleasantly surprised with our stay! The place was clean and the bathrooms were nice, each bathroom has a shower so it does not feel like a dorm hall style bathroom. We stayed in one of the private rooms and had a bunk bed which was more comfortable than I expected and I slept like a baby. The staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the city. The hostel was a great place to stay when I was in town for a week around the French Quarter Fest. The Canal St streetcar is a short walk away and takes you right into the heart of town. The area around the hostel (Mid-City) also has a few great bars and restaurants. The staff are very welcoming (Hi Jess and Justin!) and have plenty of tips for places to see, things to do and ways to get around. The building itself is very clean (especially the bathrooms) and cozy. I'd definitely recommend staying here. read more

I had the most incredible time here this weekend. I kid you not when I say this: this place made my NOLA trip great. I was having a rough time with a couple things when I first got to NOLA, but as soon as I checked into Site 61, things started looking up. I met lovely people from all over that were so open with their life stories and incredibly courteous. I was fortunate enough to come on a day when they were having a pot luck which allowed me to do so and I loved everyone so much that I decided to stay in for the night and just explore the next day. For anyone that's worried about security here: I was worried that it might be a sketchy area, but it's actually a safe, warm, welcoming environment to be in. There are little balconies you can sit on and the courtyard outback is amazing. Me and my friends wanted to save some money and just bought some hot dogs and used the grill they had outback. Such a wonderful place to stay. As a solo traveller I was a little skeptical at first of hostel living, but Josie, Justin, and the rest of the staff made me feel at home. The location was perfect for accessing the heart of New Orleans and I never felt unsafe at any point. Living quarters were comfortable and featured all the amenities you'd expect at a bigger, corporate hotel. A great hostel and probably the best I've stayed at. It was very clean and they provided free towels and breakfast, which was good. The actual hostel has a very modern New Orleans look, it was previously an old boarding house and they did a great job remodelling it. The hostel is in a good location, six blocks away from the streetcar. My only negative is that they had too many cameras, which made me feel like I was being watched all the time. This might be a good thing because they were concerned about security but I felt slightly uneasy. This is a must stay if you're in New Orleans, I would definitely stay again next time I'm in town! Lots of fun common areas (kitchen, living areas, tv with xbox). Staff very helpful and friendly. Continental breakfast with bagels, bananas, coffee, and juice was appreciated. Bathrooms were best I've seen in a hostel - there are a bunch of single rooms including a shower, sink, and toilet with doors that close. Shower is nicer than what I have at home. By far the best hostel I stayed at during my month-long trip the US. I ended up at Site 61 after booking at another hostel in New Orleans. I showed up at my original hostel and was just horrified and knew I needed to stay somewhere else! After a night there and a night at a hotel, I went to Site 61. This hostel is quite new and run by a family. It's more expensive (about $20 more per night than the other hostel I booked at), but it is 100% worth it!!! You can tell they really care about this business. It's incredibly clean, comfortable and you really feel at home. I stayed in a 6-person room, but it was only 2 of us at the time. The bunk beds are sturdy and comfortable. It was a bit warm in the room at night, but there was a fan that helped a lot. There are private bathrooms connected to each room, which is just fantastic. There is also a bathroom outside of the room in the common that can be used as well. You can check in after 4 and I was early, but I just hung out at a bar a few blocks away until 4. I would like to see the option of dropping your bags off early and coming back, but I think because there are only a few people working here they don't have enough staff to do so. You have to use a code to get in to the hostel, which I liked a lot since it felt secure. The rooms had their own keys and the only suggestion I'd have is having doors that automatically lock. It didn't really bother me though since I felt so comfortable and secure in this place. The hostel is about 6 blocks away from a streetcar stop, so I found getting to and from the French Quarter easy enough. There are grocery/convenience stores and a variety of other businesses in the area. It's in residential area, so it was fairly quiet. I wanted to book a swamp and plantation tour, and the manager was super helpful and actually did everything for me. There is breakfast every morning and it was delicious (coffee, juice, bagels, cereal, and even pancakes some days!). The owner was around a lot, but she wasn't in the way and just wanted to ensure everything was in tip-top shape.There are a couple of TVs with cable, a nice reading area with books and a cute fireplace, a very clean kitchen and a backyard area. You can pay $5 and have your laundry done - I got it back folded and everything - it was such a luxury! The WiFi always work and I was able to use it without issue in my room. Overall, this was a wonderful experience and I'll be back soon! read more

My friend and I stayed at Site 61 over Mardi Gras weekend and it is probably one of the better hostels I have stayed in. The beds were soft, rooms were clean, and the bathrooms were single user (and there were a lot of them!) The sci fi theme was pretty fun, too, although I couldn't figure out the "theme" of my room. More than anything, though, this place felt safe, which for two solo female travelers was a big deal! There are lots of security cameras around and everyone was friendly. I brought my own lock and grabbed a locker right at check-in, because there were only so many big lockers. The hostel is on a bus line and only a few blocks from the streetcar... both are shut down during Mardi Gras so the location at the time wasn't ideal, but during non-festival times I think the location would be fine. Although, if you do going during Mardi Gras, be prepared for the hour and a half walk from the French Quarter. read more

FACILITY: This building was recently renovated  and is a beautiful home on the historic register. ACCOMMODATIONS:  Abundant beautiful bathrooms with high-end tile, shower heads, and great hot water.  Beds are comfortable and towels provided.  Kitchen has nice cooking facility and refrigerator. Decent extra storage available for extra bags, etc. LOUNGING: Two really nice areas to kick back and also to watch TV on nice big screens. ACCESS and HOURS: Very generous hours and easy "keys" access to both the main door and our dorm rooms.  I felt very secure. STAFF: Friendly and knowledgeable. PRICE:  CAN'T BEAT IT. read more

They even let us print our boarding passes there so we saved a few bucks at the airport! This hostel is also very close to a bus route and we had no problem getting from there to the French quarter, or anywhere else in the city. I stayed at Site 61 for 2.5 weeks in January 2017 and it was the best hostel experience I've ever had. The house is super clean, and the people working there were awesome. The house is big enough that you can find a place to do your own thing when you want to, but small enough that meeting other people happens very naturally. The location is also great, being walking distance from a 24-hour streetcar, and walking/running distance to City Park. Wednesday nights there were potlucks, and Saturday mornings someone usually found a tour for interested parties to attend. A bar just a couple blocks away also hosts open-mic comedy nights every week. Great hostel. read more

I adored this place. I had such a great experience here that I stayed a few extra days in New Orleans. The price was right. They serve bagels and coffee in the morning...until 11, no less. It is safe, there is parking and the neighborhood is just fine. The people that work here are fantastic and I love the building, it's about 100 years old and has great character. I don't write a lot of reviews but this was my second stay at Site 61 and it was wonderful again! This time around they had more youth workers, which was nice, but no digs on the owners who worked desk last time! It was just nice to see friendly faces around the neighborhood dives :) the neighborhood could be construed as sketchy I guess. I don't feel like it's that bad, but I don't live in an amazing neighborhood at home so I guess I have a high tolerance for that. It's very close to the canal street car, but the facility itself has nice beds, very nice and clean bathrooms and a REALLY WONDERFUL back yard space. It's off the beaten path but you can get a good amount of exploring in ;) read more
