When I want to go to NOLA there is only one Hotel I want to stay. My husband knows exactly who to call first for reservations & if they are booked up & we can't get any reservations we usually just cancel going. I have stayed many other places in NOLA. I grew up in the area. I know the city well. The city of my childhood. There is no other place in the world like New Orleans & there is no where else I would rather stay when I visit, than the Soniat House. It's always my first choice. I love several rooms for different reasons. They are all completely different so staying in a few different rooms is the way to go. The junior suites are perfect for longer stays & the room across the street with the jetted tub is quickly becoming my favorite lately. Even though the building is early 19th Century, "The Soniat House" has only been around since 1982. It's owners, New Orleanians Rodney & Frances, bought a group of adjoining early 19th century French Quarter homes & turned them into the hotel that stands today as "The Soniat House." I can't even begin to describe the beauty of this hotel or the level of class it exudes. The furnishing & antiques alone are mind blowing. From their website it says: "The project was undertaken with their keen eye for design and decor, a preference for preservation over renovation, and a desire to seamlessly incorporate modern amenities into the historic structures. Their effort garnered the distinction of being the best restoration for commercial use in the French Quarter in the past 50 years. Each of the 30 accommodations is individually decorated and furnished with carefully selected period antiques." If you like 19th Century French Antiques you will adore this boutique hotel. It's stunning. Completely stunning. You can see the pictures of their rooms on their website but nothing compares to being there. The breakfast delivery is something you should experience at least once in your lifetime. Complete with linen napkins & real silver. I just got off the phone with them & got one of the last reservations. I can't wait to be back in The French Quarter, my beautiful city, the city of my childhood, in the hotel of my dreams. From start to finish our stay here was perfect. Jill was an immense help in helping me figure out what room was right for me and would fit my budget. She was very patient and helpful in helping me plan out the trip. This quaint little home is just far enough that you are in your own little world but close enough that you can walk anywhere in the French Quarter. The staff is impeccable taking care of your every need. The balcony's are beautiful for photos and of course to enjoy a glass of wine. The court yards are also really lovely, breakfast arrives in a timely manner and are the best biscuits I've ever had. We stayed for 4 nights and I've never felt more at home in a hotel. Such a cool boutique. Part of SLH and now the Hyatt umbrella, Soniat House is completely out of left field in terms of outward appearances and actual experience. You walk into what looks like an old townhouse, only to realize that it expands into a cozy little garden surrounded by various hotel rooms. The decor is lovely and the staff super friendly. It really did feel like a quiet oasis in the middle of a bustling city. Absolutely loved my stay here and would recommend it for someone looking for something a little off the beaten path. read more

Incredibly Beautiful Hotel Provides the True NOLA Experience. We stayed here in 2015 and we are heading back in 2018 for our second experience at this amazing hotel. This hotel is much more than lodging, it is evocative of the place in the most wonderful way. The courtyard, the staff, the welcome, the rooms, represent the best of NOLA. I had seen this place in shelter magazines for years before staying here, so I had the highest of expectations and a bit of trepidation before we arrived, as things that are billed to be so wonderful, often, in reality, cannot match the hype. Happily our sojourn at the Soniat House exceeded expectations. The staff are friendly, welcoming and full of enthusiasm and info about all that NOLA has to offer. The day we arrived we were directed to a wonderful free concert in Louis Armstrong Park in Treme that was the essence of NOLA jazz, the type of event that locals relish and tourists rarely learn about. We were also told about Coop's for 'red beans and rice Monday', which we would not have likely discovered on our own. They made inquiries re a carriage ride, which we did not ultimately take, but their efforts were much appreciated and always enthusiastically undertaken. The charming gentlemen in their white jackets made us feel like family as we spent time in the courtyard. With older hotels, the infrastructure can be challenging, but I am happy to report the temperature control, cleanliness, bed, and bathroom facilities were what I expect of a five star hotel. The anticipation of our return to this romantic and beautiful hotel has taken me back down memory lane and prompted my review. read more

Their cancellation policy is absolutely ridiculous -- no changes within 30 days of arrival! We could not make it as it turns out because my girlfriend got sick. They would not allow any change to the reservation, or make any concession whatsoever. No, they charged the entire $800 to my credit card for a 2 night stay! The hotel was not fully booked, so it's not like they turned away anyone in order to hold my room. I think this is a very greedy and selfish hotel and unless you are the kind of person who never ever needs to change their plans, I would not advise booking here. read more

This is not review about the hotel itself, but about the customer service. As a patron who intended on staying at the hotel in October, the online reservation system and I inadvertently made a reservation in July (less than two weeks from the arrival date). Knowing that the punitive 15 days-or-full-stay-charge cancellation policy, I understood I had until mid October to cancel if necessary. Much to my surprise, I was emailed a review form asking about y recent stay only a week and a half later. After inquiring, the realization that my reservation was mistakenly made three months in advance, I was told that the "policy is the policy" and I was out of luck. Needless to say, I persisted and was met with such a lack of understanding that I cannot see how this wonderful place could survive such poor customer service. As someone in the business of taking care of people, I don't know how such a rigid attitude can help anyone. Having explained that myself and another couple (who had incidentally booked for October) and possibly another couple to do the same, would take our business elsewhere if some compromise could not be met, I was told that the summer is the slow season and they depend on every reservation. Or, in other words, "we got your money, and there's nothing you can do about it". Unfortunately, as someone born and raised in NOLA, I didn't expect this sort of experience from my hometown. The laissez-faire, big easy attitude certainly doesn't extend down the far end of Chartres street. Best look around before booking with Soniat House. read more

My boyfriend picked this place for a romantic long getaway weekend. WOW!!! I loved it from the minute I got there...from the keys, to the fact we had to cross the street to get to our suite, to the walk up the votive lined stairs, to the small walkway to our suite...everything! Its was quaint and romantic. An oasis. Beautiful. We were never bothered, but were always welcome to ask questions. The staff helped us make dinner reservations at very nice places with great food and service. In a town that's colorful, loud, lively, fun, and so many other things, it was nice to have a patch of peace to go to. Just far enough away from Bourbon "happenings" so we could easily walk back and forth, and also to the French Market area. It almost felt as if we were the only ones there. We came in late every night, and were never disturbed by other guests. The courtyards are gorgeous, and we made drinks in the honor bar, and sat outside to enjoy them. This was one of the best places I have ever stayed, and will definately be back!! read more

Stayed at the Ritz Carlton in New Orleans on this same trip and much preferred the homey atmosphere at Soniat. I was upgraded to a suite on the top floor and it was astoundingly gorgeous. I really liked this hotel. It's location was great! We were able to walk everywhere in the French Quarter and to some places in Marigny. The staff was great and our room was extremely large and decorated nicely. The only downside is the noise we experienced because we had a ground floor room. The occupants in the room above us must wore cement shoes because we heard every step they made. If you stay there request a upper floor room. read more

**SKIP THIS DISCRIMINATORY HOTEL IN THE FRENCH QUARTER** My husband and I came from NY to stay in this very well reviewed hotel in the beautiful French Quarter. I have a service dog and was told it would not be a problem but they mention there was a "hotel cat". I let them know as a service dog, she has been trained to ignore other animals when she is working and anyone with a service dog knows this even means cats. Regardless, I assured them not only of her training, but let them know we have a cat at home and there has never been an problem. Upon our arrival, the staff was alarmed I walked in to check-in with my dog. I let them know I had spoken with someone when I made the reservation and they said they had no idea and repeatedly stated they have a strict no pets policy. I offered my dogs certification information, but they said to go on up to my room and it is not a problem. In the morning, a new staff member told my husband the hotel cat ran away, passively suggesting that my dog -Who did not leave the room after my late night check in- has caused this to occur. Again we said we didn't understand the confusion and we don't want to be blamed for a cat's behavior. To make a long story short, Michelle at the front desk kept talking about " the poor cat" and how " in her entire life she has only left twice." and that she is " not saying it was my dog but it is a strange coincidence that the beloved cat has run off for the night." She asked to move our room by the front door so that we might " be discreet with our dog and not to disturb the cat if she should come back." At this point I just could not believe this!! There is cute quirky hotel things and then there is just plain unprofessional. I asked her if this hotel is basically, made to serve the cat and when her behavior is not "normal" if it is practice here to blame a guest and make them feel guilty that they have need for a service animal. I felt very unwelcome and let her know that this is just very uncomfortable all around. Again she repeated the not pet policy BUT the exception they make for service animals. I said I was not seeing any exception and did not feel this is what was happening. She told me the hotel IS BUILT to house that cat and THE CAT is a PRIORITY and BELOVED by guests and staff and everyone is very concerned with her "sudden behavior" so yes, we need to be accommodated due to the CAT!!!!! incredible. Honestly, i love animals. I love cats dogs -they are my family. BUT to run a BUSINESS where you service GUESTS who PAY A LOT of money to stay and be told THE CAT is priority is totally INSANE. not to mention it is ILLEGAL to kick someone out because they have need for a service. It is OUT RIGHT DISCRIMINATION against persons with disabilities that require the service of an animal. SURE this hotel is beautiful-- but so is ALL of New Orleans and the French Quarter. Stay here if you must but i recommend you choose from one of the many other beautiful places to stay in the French Quarter that are NOT DISCRIMINATORY and WHOSE GENERAL MANAGER IS NOT A CAT. best wishes and safe travels. read more

We just came back from a 3 night stay in one of the suites. The hotel was in a great location, and it was quiet & authentic. It was our first time at this hotel. We prefer staying at smaller, luxury properties for a more intimate experience. This place was good for that, however it all went out the window quickly. Upon checkout, I was reading the paper outside the hotel office, got up to use the restroom just inside and came to find my phone was stolen. This is a secure building, so not just anyone can come inside. There was another couple on their way out and a small handful of staff members present. I hate to point fingers, but it doesn't seem likely that the couple who was also paying $450/nt to stay there would pocket my $650 Iphone. I alerted the woman at the front desk who was polite about it, but also a bit helpless. Unfortunately I had a flight to catch back to Los Angeles, so I did not have time to call the police and go through all of that. All they really offered at the front desk was a sorry and a shoulder shrug. It was a very disappointing end to the holiday weekend. Keep your valuables close if you're going to stay here. read more

Soniat House is a charming & elegant boutique hotel. The entire staff (Linda, Scott, Jessie, Irving & Calvin) are exceptionally helpful & friendly. While there for 8-days my husband became ill on our final day. Early in the morning the hotel staff found an open drug store & went there to get him some medicine. Claire, the hotel cat, is entertaining & amusing. Being located on the outer edge of the French Quarter, Soniat House is convenient and within easy walking distance to many historical sites & great restaurants, as well as quiet & peaceful. read more

The ungracious Soniat House, fairly or not, negatively colored my entire view of New Orleans. This place has all the charm of a slap in the face. My room, #11, just inches from busy Chartres Street and right by the front door, was so loud and terrible that I begged each day to be moved. While they had an empty suite available during my entire stay, they refused to move me unless I paid the upgraded price. Since I was already paying for a night I could not even stay at the hotel (due to their ridiculous four night minimum "weekend" policy), they let a suite sit empty rather than have a satisfied customer. The front staff is patronizing and condescending, telling me I was assigned such a poor room because I "booked late" (6 months in advance) and online (I booked in person). Who treats guests this way? I suspect the Soniat House is in for a rude awakening--the kind of rude awakening I experienced each night in this dreadful hotel. read more

The Soniat House was everything I hoped it would be. Gorgeous, private, the perfect location. It is like staying in your own quiet, exquisitely decorated apartment in the Quarter. I really felt like a resident of New Orleans while staying here for three days in late August, rather than a tourist. The amenities are impeccable -- comfortable bed, pillows, sheets, Molton Brown toiletries, beautiful antique furniture -- as is the service. Concierge Bill, whom we contacted before we arrived and who even called us on his day off, helped us make the most of our three days in the city by suggesting restaurants and tours and making reservations for us. Hand-written notes were left in our room telling us where to be at what time. We took advantage of great summer rates to treat ourselves by staying here (we booked a junior suite, which was huge), and it is going to be really hard to ever stay anywhere else!
