This was the second time I did a yoga retreat with the Sivananda Center, first was in Kerala over a decade ago and I was really looking forward to diving back in a reviving my yoga practice so signed up for the Beginners Yoga Course at this center in Grass Valley. While I attended unfortunately during the heatwave and wildfire season (and the smoke was no joke) the satsangs, yoga, great food and workshops left my mind much much calmer and body much happier and balanced after my stay. I stayed in the Shanti cabins to make sure I had AC and they did not disappoint, super clean and comfortable. The people are lovely and some of the deepest conversations and connections I've had with strangers in awhile. I appreciated that it was more than just a yoga course and was a holistic yoga/meditation practice that taught me a lot and equipped me with tools to use everyday. I practice Buddhist meditation which focuses on basic breathing and no veneration of gods/guru so I would say I took about 80% of the learnings and didn't implement the rest (e.g. I wasn't fully into the satsang chanting or some of the breathing techniques though appreciated how pretty it was to sing with others and how the chanting and breathing help concentrate the mind). The center is also good about recognizing that there are multiple religions with the same core truth. Finally I do want to say after the retreat I dove more into Swami Vishnudevananda's background (who is now deceased) who brought Swami Sivananda's teachings to the West and similar to the review from Lesley C. found the several allegations of sexual assault. I found it sadly not so surprising. I mean jeez how many religions/leaders have such a seedy past, I did find it a little difficult though some of the chants really still lifted him up as this perfect human and he clearly had flaws. That being said I would still go back, found it much more positive than negative overall and the holistic program really worked for me and again continue to take 80% (aka leave out the chants to the Swami Vishnudevananda, realize that while the teachings are good but the human is imperfect) read more

I took a short retreat here. It was enjoyable and healthy, and I cannot praise the staff enough. I have difficulty rating them down because the staff and volunteers are just so lovely and hard-working. I've had to think for a while about this review. Let's start with the positive: The ashram is lovely and a picturesque oasis. The people working and living there are kind, giving, and astute. I had a lovely retreat and enjoyed the food, ascetic schedule, and meditation. Truly an excellent way to gather one's health and contemplate bigger things. Such a picture of nature and peace. However, it must be said that like most women who read, I am extremely aware of the multiple, extremely distressing sexual assault allegations from multiple parties raised several years ago that the now-deceased founder of this ashram. There has been little public closure, and I very naively thought that this would be addressed head-on by the time I visited in 2021. What I found was starkly different. Yes, they have a harassment policy posted on their boards. However, their founder is not only constantly recognized, he is deified and venerated constantly - in icons, kirtan, and lecture. I recognize that he also accomplished good things and deserves recognition, but at the same time he was raised up as a paragon in almost every class I attended. It was a very, very difficult juxtaposition. More so for somebody who has experienced trauma. Human beings are inherently flawed. No human is perfect, and we all strive to fight our demons. The swamis and staff at the Yoga Farm are astute, insightful, and kind. I can't say enough nice things about them. However, they all seem to have a total blind spot for the truly flawed person who they venerate. It honestly raised some trauma for me, even though I had overall a very nice time and felt safe there. I certainly didn't feel comfortable saying anything. However, how am I to learn to fight my demons from people who refuse to acknowledge their own? As much as I enjoy the writings and teachings of Sivananda, I have not found a home here. read more

First ashram experience and it was all I hoped it would be and more! I attended a 3 day yoga for stress relief retreat and everything was fantastic, including our amazing teacher Kevin, the delicious, healthy meals, the daily meditation and yoga sessions and cozy cabin. The Permaculture Design class taught by Spencer Nielsen is fantastic. I learned an incredible amount of detailed and inspiring information during the 25 hours of zoom class (spread over 4 months). Sometimes zoom classes are challenging to attend, but not this one! Spencer's deep knowledge about permaculture, "gardening," science, our environment - just about anything pertaining to the outdoor world in which we live - was fascinating. I now have real tools to help me not just in the garden, but in life. I'm sorry that I could not attend the week-long onsite class, as I know that would have really been such a learning treat. Beautiful, sacred place. Everyone goes there for a reason...so many walks of life...all good people. My favorite parts are the kirtan and the ayurvedic food :) Amazing place for spiritual growth and realizing ones potential/issues. Bring a flashlight and make sure you arrive at a reasonable hour-bed time is usually 9 pm for a 5:30 am wakeup call. I attended an on line class from 9/7/20 to 9/11/20: The Bhagavad Gitta chapter 5 with Swami Dharma Ananda at the Sivananda Yoga Farm . Life is so complex and without a deep understanding of your internal world and how to relate to the external world it is impossible or painful to live a life on earth. This is why I go to the Sivananda Yoga Farm to seek guidance, understanding and courage to continue going to the places that scared me with LOVE. Swamidharma Ananda has a way to explain this book in a language that you see the connection with your daily life struggles and since this book is the book of the VEDAS or the wise..... A few weeks ago, my friend and I attended a "ayurvedic massage retreat" at the yoga farm. We had called about four times ahead of time to see if the extra 70 dollars for the retreat was worth it, and what the retreat would entail, and not one person we talked to could answer us. We decided to pay the extra 140 (70 for each) anyway, because we wanted to learn about Ayuvedic MASSAGE. When we first got to the yoga farm, we were told that no one knew what was happening for the retreat, but that we should go put our stuff down and walk around the farm. When we came back for dinner, we found out that we had missed an orientation that the person who checked us in failed to tell us about. On Saturday, we attended a yoga class, and the "retreat" was supposed to be after that. We were still unclear about what it entailed. The yoga farm was extremely unorganized, and not one person could tell us what was happening when. We were walking around and every where we went, people were telling us "this class isn't for you, it is only for the yoga teachers" or, "you aren't supposed to be here." It was extremely unwelcoming, in a place that I expected to welcome us with open arms. We finally found out that we had paid 70 dollars extra for a 1 hour lecture. I was ok with that, but would have liked to know that I was paying for a lecture only, and no massage. That was not clear on the website and no one I had asked about told me that. There were 7 people who were not part of the yoga teacher training going on that weekend, and were just staying at the farm. Only us and one other person had paid the 70 dollars for the "retreat" portion of the weekend. However, when it was time for the lecture, all 4 of the other staying at the farm were invited to attend free of charge. So, we paid 70 for something that we could have gotten into for nothing. When we attended the lecture, the lady was five minutes late, had not prepared adequately, and did not have some of the handouts she was supposed to have brought. Not once did she talk about massage. She also told us that she would do a consultation to find out what Dosha we were, and if we wanted that, we could meet her after dinner. However, she never appeared after dinner, so I never found out what Dosha I was. All in all this was an extremely frustrating experience. We were constantly being told we were in the wrong place, nothing was getting communicated to us, and we paid for something everyone else did not have to pay for. I was extremely dissatisfied (as were the other 7 people staying at the farm that I talked to) so I went to talk to Karuna Devi. She agreed that it was a crazy weekend, and maybe the farm had too much going on and should consider not doing "retreats" during teacher trainings. I attend yoga classes and retreats often, and have never felt so out of place and alienated as I have at this yoga farm. I will not be back. read more

I'm just going to shed light on a few things that personally stood out to me during my stay at the Ashram in Sacramento and Yoga Center in San Francisco for a total of almost 3 months... Cons: The head Swami Sita definitely has her favorites as far as the people who reside on the farm. Flies by the boat load As much as its said that "Karma Yoga" assignments are designated as far as people who are meant for the job, it's definitely based on favoritism. Pros: Paradise for anyone looking to go away to a natural environment The food is AMAZING The seminars are informative and mixes things up then just the regular routine I resided on the farm for a little over a month to get my feet wet with Meditation, vegetarianism and seclusion. During that time I got to learn the basics of the spiritually practiced there and met a lot of people. The show is ran by Swami Sita which is like the master almighty. At first I was in awe of her knowledge and presence as much as everyone else only for those feelings to diminish rapidly after I saw she had her favorites and really did not treat me as well at the golden ones. I feel as though all of us are equal especially in a "NON-Judgmental " environment. Do not get it twisted, just because this is a place of peace doesn't mean the residents and employees don't have their share of dramas and gossip just like the rest of us. Once I learned that I was a tad bit turned off but also elated with the fact that no matter how spiritual you may seem, nobody's perfect. I have just returned from month long teacher training at the Ashram. Wow, what a truly amazing experience. I learned a lot about myself this past month.And the training itself-an incredible group of dedicated spiritual teachers, who are passing on the teachings of this wonderful lineage. I have much more to learn, and I am grateful to be a part of the Sivananda family. Last weekend, I redeemed the Groupon deal with a friend, and we really enjoyed our experience. Before I left, I read some mixed reviews and felt a bit apprehensive, but after going myself I can confidently recommend Sivananda Ashram for those with open minds. Here are my tips/comments to decide if this is the right place for you. 1) This "Yoga vacation" is not a "vacation" in the mainstream sense of the word. Your schedule is pretty rigid, and you will not be sleeping in til noon and going to yoga when it suits you. This is a retreat, spiritual at its core, with a very established value system. Their goal is not to entertain you or allow you complete freedom: their goal is to show you a day in the life of a devoted yogi (the lifestyle, not just the exercise aspect of yoga). I had fun, but a different kind of fun than a usual vacation. 2) Housing is comfortable, not glamorous. If you are someone on a budget, I would totally recommend the dorm accommodations. The cabins were heated, very clean, with blankets, towels, and pillows. Admittedly, the beds weren't amazingly comfortable, but after a long day and waking up at 5:30am, I slept fairly well. If you have the budget, they actually do have more luxurious and private options. Dorms have 3-4 people with bunk beds. 3) Other reviews talk about a "religious" aspect. My experience was that it was a very multi-cultural community with varying religions (there are flags and statues and paitings of many religious figures, such as Buddha, Jesus, and mostly Siva, Krishna, etc). During the morning and evening Satsangs, after silent meditation, everyone chants and sings from the Chant book. I found this strange at first, but I still find myself humming "Jaya Ganesha Jaya Ganesha..." to myself. After my first Satsang, I really began to enjoy the chanting. People bust out their instruments and make it a fun jam session. You never have to chant, either. My friend enjoyed just sitting and listening. It's a very spiritual but very individual experience. 4) You will get up early and sleep early. 5:30am wake up. 10:30 lights out. Check out the schedule online for the rest of the day. Two yoga, two satsangs, and two buffet vegetarian meals. 5) I was a bit worried about the modesty rules, but I never saw anyone chastised. I was afraid about the preference for "loose" and "light" clothing when all I own are black yoga pants. It's all about your intention and common sense - wear t-shirts and pants that aren't about making that booty pop. It's a retreat. I personally loved getting to dress comfortably and not care about my appearance for a few days. If you go with a sig other, don't show any PDA. (Good note: perhaps not the best trip for a romantic getaway) 6) The food was great. It was healthy, nourishing, and made with love. They cater to all types of dietary concerns, and overall, I loved the food. They do not believe in eating garlic ,onions, alcohol, drugs, meat, or fish. They have their reasons, get over it. All cultures and religions have dietary beliefs. 7) Take off your shoes before entering any building! Bring slip on shoes. 8) Finally, the yoga! The classes are 2 hours, but they go by very fast. A large chunk of class is dedicated to breathing practice. The yoga is very relaxing, not hard at all, though you could go through the difficult poses. You absolutely do NOT have to push yourself if you don't want to. The teachers are helpful and chill. All in all, just please go with an open mind and heart. I felt so great after a few days in the wilderness, watching the beautiful stars, seeing the llamas, hiking up to the Siva temple, and just forcing myself to meditate and relax. read more

I've been to the Sivananda Yoga farm twice now, for weekend courses -- once staying in a tent, and once in a dorm. Looking over some of the critiques, I thought I'd put my 2 cents in: This is not the yoga you'll find at the local gym. The asana practice is rather similar to books that were popular in the 60s and 70s. It is also not severed from its spiritual roots. If you visit you will be exposed to bhakti yoga (devotional chanting), raja yoga (meditation), and karma yoga (selfless service), The food is delicious, but vegetarian and only served twice a day, so bring snacks. (The boutique has a few things, but is only open a few hours a day.) It's also a disciplined environment -- you'll get up at 5:30 and go to bed at 10:00, and are expected to participate in the daily schedule. However, I've noticed that people who are there just for the weekend are cut some slack, and they don't take roll or give you a hard time if you don't show up for something. In many ways, the retreat is just what you make it. I chose to spend satsang doing walking meditation on the labyrinth, because I just felt too stressed trying to make it down the hill by 6:00. Nobody said a word. The only thing they are strict about is not disturbing silent meditation, which takes up the first half-hour of satsang. I found the staff incredibly helpful: One young lady helped me put up my tent on the first trip; another ran clear across the property to the office to replace my lost cabin key on the second. Considering that the whole place is run on volunteer labor, it is run very well, with only a few mishaps. (Brunch was late once, because they lacked help in the kitchen.) My nemesis was the hill you have to walk up to get to the cabins, or even worse, the tents. You can leave some of your stuff at the dressing area near the bathrooms, but it seemed like I always managed to forget something I needed and had to trek up the hill. But then, I'm somewhat older than most of the visitors there, and I confess it caused me some physical stress. Both of the workshops I attended were very basic, even a little boring because I've been familiar with yoga concepts since I was a teenager. I hope to be able to go to some of the workshops on Hindu mythology or scripture study sometime. All-in-all, I enjoyed my weekends there. It may not be your cup of tea, but if you're interested in experiencing the yoga lifestyle, as opposed to just a yoga class, it's well worth trying a weekend up at the Sivananda ashram. read more

I came here for the half price weekend over the summer. I tented which made it dirt cheap. (no pun intended lol) the camping grounds are ok. I felt a little to close to other people but it was kind of a busy weekend and i guess the point is to live like a small community. I could tell you specifics about food, pricing and daily activities but i really think if youre considering going just do it. You wont regret it. There is a bit of a heavy load of meditation and chanting stuff but none of it is really required just encouraged. If you want a chill weekend camping, getting well fed And laying in a hammock all day yiu can do that too. I saw quite a few people who werent so much into chanting or 2 hour yoga just wander around and do their own thing. Awesome: -beautiful grounds -clean bathrooms/showers (like super clean) -DELISH food. And way more than enough for everyone. (im actually kinda glad i only did a weekend because i was eating so well im sure i would have gained weight if i stayes any longer! Thats not to say it isnt healthy. All meals are served buffet style so u have to discipline yourself which was not going well for me haha) Not awesome -most of the staff seeme to be work study kids who were not the most approachable breed. The girl at the front desk was stiff and clinical. Not a good first impression. This place woukd be sooo much better if all the staff was on the same page about the intentions that the place is supposed to be about. The yogis/swamis were all very relaxed and friendly tho. -apparently theres some frowning upon PDA so dont come here with your boy or girlfriend expecting a romantic getaway. read more

My visit to the Ashram was life changing. I did not know anything about yoga and spirituality gobblygook. I just wanted time away from city to relax from work. I was new to satsangs, which includes meditation and chanting. Meditation was extremely tough for me because I could not sit still and crazy things kept coming to my mind when I closed my eyes for a while. During chanting I had no idea what the words were about and what is the point of chanting. By second day I could follow the chanting and shake the shaker (is that the right name for the instrument?) at the same time :) As days went by it got better; therefore, I returned to this place at least once every month. The reason i came back is that I became much more conscious about my thoughts and spirituality. The difference of me before I came to the Ashram and am now are like moon and Sun. I wake up quite early now (~5am), do yoga, maintain a spiritual diary, stopped consuming alcohol and meat. Above all, I am happy now. Also, I started doing much better at work (am a top performer now) and have been promoted twice now since. I liked this place so much that I encouraged my brother to come spend his summer here and he did and he loved it. He is now back in the Czech Republic but he misses and they miss him at the Ashram too. I am thinking of doing my TTC here. read more

It would appear the prior reviewer might benefit from non-attachment training, and a healthy understanding of raja yoga. Humility is a big part of a truly yogic lifestyle. A good teacher gets under your skin to test you. A good student doesn't run away in the middle of the night when the yoga starts to get inconvenient on the inside. Peace and Love isn't about Happy-Go-Lucky. It's about cultivating Serenity in the face of adversity. Not escaping hardship. Can you let go of expectations, in fact everything you are, to unveil a better being? The Yoga Farm is not a yoga spa. If you want a taste of moderated austerities and the benefits of Selfless Service, this place will be the haven to help you see who you truly are, and what you are capable of becoming. Blessings on this lineage for keeping it real, and offering a truly comprehensive yoga approach, something so often missing in the West. Gets hot there in the summers, but they have a swimming pond. Wonderful satsangs each morning and evening. A number of beautiful shrines, and a meditation labyrinth. The morning bell at 5:30am is like a cow walking along the Ganges, welcoming you to the stream. In August 2010, I spent 10 days on a Fast-and-Cleanse program. It was absolutely fantastic. Fasting is hard and, oddly enough, time consuming. It's physically and emotionally complex. The experience can range from pure bliss to a full spiritual crisis. Swami Sita and her staff facilitated the experience with careful attention, a deep well of knowledge and full commitment. The three residents who supported the 12 participants also fasted with us. And still they found the wherewithal to get up an hour earlier than everyone else [at 4:30 a.m.] to get the sauna warm; prepare and serve our juice meals joyfully and kindly; make huge pots of vegetable broth daily [easily a 5-hour task]; guide and support us through all our individual experiences; teach us the foundations of vedic-based food combining, plus other relevant topics; and turn a diverse group of strangers into good friends. Swami Sita was delivering two additional courses concurrently: Healing Through Yoga, and Positive Thinking. We got to enjoy all this amazing content as part of being at the Yoga Farm. In the process, a long-standing chronic ache went away, I sank into the yoga asanas more fully and comfortably than I have in years, and just enjoyed the lovely, calm, beautiful environs. Plus, I lost 10 pounds :^) To the wonderful staff members Parvati, Shakti and Hari Das: Words of gratitude can't come close to expressing my appreciation and fondness for all of you. If you are curious about exploring the benefits of a traditional yogic lifestyle in beautiful natural surroundings, you should definitely visit the Sivananda Yoga Farm. Beware adorable wandering llamas and alpacas which will lumber up to you curiously, smelling of fresh grass. Days are quite structured, beginning with a bell for meditation. As a guest, you're welcome to participate as much or as little as you like. But like so many things in life, the more you put into it the more you'll get out of it. The lovely yoga hall, designed using the Hindu version of Feng Shui, is accessed from the women's cabins and tent area via a walk over a storybook bridge with a babbling brook underneath, then across a gentle meadow. Not so bad even at 6am! Yoga classes are offered at 8am and 4pm by Sivananda trained teachers - just listen for the bell. (: Sivananda yoga is based on a series of 12 classical yoga postures designed to open the chakras sequentially from the crown down to the root. It is not my usual practice but I find the classes satisfying and deeply relaxing. Food served at 10am and 6pm is simple vegetarian fare prepared according to sattvic and Ayurvedic principles. In response to accusations of old food being served: I've participated in karma yoga in the kitchen several times over the last months. There is definitely delicious and fresh food offered buffet style at every meal. The principles of Ayurveda insist that food not consumed within 24 hours shouldn't be eaten. Sometimes items leftover from the previous meal are available. Those are at the end of the buffet, separate from the main meal being ladled out of big, fragrantly steaming pots. This is not a for-profit, party-style retreat. There are comfortable new cabins with bathrooms and a/c, or budget tent options if you prefer, and body treatments available. But noone is on commission or due a bonus based on your happiness here. It's a place to work on yourself and explore the physical, mental and emotional benefits of yogic living. This is an ashram - a Hindu monastery - you know, where monks live. No meat, alcohol/drugs or hanky panky permitted as the guiding values of the place are about purification and self-realization. Staff work long hours and are mostly volunteers. From my first visit, the front desk team has gone above and beyond to make my stays comfortable and to accommodate my unpredictable schedule. Unfortunately they are not always informed of the latest online deals and so forth, so be patient and ask the right questions. If the lifestyle, which is rather ascetic, doesn't meet a guest's expectations then guests are not begged to stay. The place sort of is what it is. A yoga vacation or introductory weekend is a great way to see if it is for you. There are also deeper level programs in the Vedas, Joytish, Ayurveda and Yoga Studies for more advanced seekers. I've always found time spent at the Yoga Farm valuable. From my very first visit, I returned to LA with a compassion for strangers and myself that I didn't think I had in me. The spiritual and personal development benefits are beyond what I've experienced with other yoga or spiritual communities. I leave with a sense of inner peace and openness of heart that has in the past been hard to come by. Arrive with an open mind. While I'm not a devotee, I'm grateful for what the Yoga Farm provides and hope that it's around for at least another 40 years teaching Sw Sivananda's take on service, love, purification, meditation and self-realization. read more

I wanted to do something relaxing, spiritual and different to mark the passage of my 40th birthday, so I booked a weekend at the Yoga Farm. It was an Ayurveda weekend so I enjoyed a special choreographed massage performed by two trained therapists that focused on releasing toxins from the body. It was amazing and refreshing. The staff, swamis, location, yoga and workshops were all top notch. I was very impressed with the deluxe cabins, they are very comfortable. The construction on the cabins is brand new, the decor shades of gold and the bed is a foam mattress (super comfy). Highlights: Angelic the singer, the 3 legged cat, the pond and bullfrogs, the labyrinth, the deluxe cabins, the food and the spirit of the center. read more

Extremely disappointing. Upon arriving, they charged us $60 extra for our upgraded cabin. I showed them my email quote from them of $120. The woman who apparently runs the place was summoned. She got close to my face, smiled and said, "Please excuse the human error". Then proceeded to charge me $180.00. I should have argued but didn't want to start my spiritual retreat off with an argument. This was completely unprofessional of them. If they quoted wrong, they need to honor their quote. I'll be taking this up with my credit card company. The grounds are beautiful and the cabins adequate but that's about all that's good. This place is not what it advertises. The food was inedible, I've been a vegetarian so don't mind the no meat. However, the food here was mushy leftovers. Seriously awful. If you're not a fan of curry, you won't be able to eat. There is no service. You're "required" to do Karma yoga while the staff smile and watch. The dish washing station is disgusting and completely unsanitary. The sheets stunk and I slept with my hoodie up the entire night. And the yoga was far more breathing and chanting. The best exercise was the walk we took. I am a spiritual person and I accept all religions. I believe there is something to be learned from all. But this place was regimented and creepy. Any good lessons were lost in the format. The workshop was more chanting and prayer and mindless tips that anyone who's had any sort of spiritual journey already knows. I was there with 4 other friends. We barely made it 24 hours before checking out early. Like the prior reviews, the staff didn't even ask why we were leaving early. I get the feeling they are used to it. I was at the Ashram with family and it was truly an enlightening experience. Its an extremely well managed, clean, friendly, and a holy place. This is true to traditional Yoga ashrams that have existed in India for centuries. So, if you're going in for a luxury retreat and hotel experience, getting up at noon, doing bbq, etc, you'll be disappointed. However, if you go in with an open mind, humility, and wanting to experience what great sages of India have done for centuries; this is the closest you'll get to it in the Western world. I've read previous reviews and would like to make some comments. This is a Yoga Ashram based on the Indian/Hindu Yoga techniques. Yoga in the west is perceived as a set of exercises to relax and lower blood pressure. While that is true, Yoga is a way of life in which exercise (or Asanas) are just one part, meditation, right thinking/attitude, correct eating, breathing, and selfless work are key pieces. Selfless work (Karma Yoga) is not about doing what you're an expert at, its do service with no expectation of returns. (Mahatma Gandhi used to clean toilets regularly at his Ashram) I'd highly recommend this place, go with an open mind to learn and it'll be an experience that you'll not forget. read more

Currently staying at the Ashrum in Northern California where I am taking a beginners course in Yoga. 1. We wake up at 5:30a.m every morning. Mediation starts at 6a.m followed by chants, and preparation for two hour yoga class 2. By 10a.m we have "brunch" aka a very lean, organic, vegetarian meal. Coming from someone who is a meat eater, the food is very good and traditional for those who like Indian inspired meals. 3. Depending what you paid for, you then have a series of duties or tasks you will partake in. This week (January 3-9th 2016) there is a juice cleanse therefore there is a schedule ready for you to start. There is also a suana (seasonal) 80 acres of land, temples to visit, a pond to swim in the winter, and animals. 4. Skipping to the hospitality aspect of it. This a monastery therefore woman sleep in one dormitory and men in another. However, if you have a partner and wish to sleep together/ in the same room, there are cabins that you may purchase but at a higher cost of course. 5. Bathrooms are not apart of the cabin/ dormitories therefore you must walk to use the restroom usually just a 30second -2min walk depending where your located. Everything is exceptionally clean and the members/ staff of the Ashrum are very nice. 6. Directions/location. Since it's all the way up north in Ashburn, California, you must call in advance and they pick you up from the train station or at least we did (from Amtrak). Just about a 15-20 min car ride (no biggie) 7. They don't give you yoga gear/clothing so bring your own clothes for the classes. Preferably cotton/ loose clothing I don't currently have anything else I can think of but as a new comer, I do recommend their facility if you are trying to dive into yoga or a spiritual journey of oneself. good luck! :) read more

This is an amazing magical place filled with wonderful people. Sad to hear that some people had a negative experience, but in a way it's not really the place for people looking for a cheap yoga getaway. It's a Yoga Ashram, waking time is 5:30AM and there are strict rules. However, this is exactly what many people including myself are missing from our daily lives. I relished in the fact that there were tight rules on food, clothing and promiscuous behavior. I was able to focus on mind on what's important, my practice. I first came to the Yoga Farm in Dec. of 2014 and it changed my life. It lifted me up and made me a healthier, happier and more conscientious person as a result. In May of 2015, I returned to the Yoga Farm for the Yoga Teachers Training program and it was one of the best things I have done for my life so far. I now have the mental and spiritual toolkit to face any challenge in life. The food is ayuverdic and super healthy. The ayuverdic treatments are spot on. The animals are everywhere, I have never seen so many different birds in the wild! All in All. If you are looking for the real traditional Yoga Deal this is it. If you are looking for a cheap and easy weekend you might be disappointed. read more

I went for my first visit this past week to take their (5 day) course on Positive Thinking and stress relief. I had an amazing experience and can't wait to return for another stay. The teachers were very inspiring yet relatable, the atmosphere so relaxing. The food was delicious and prepared with fresh organic ingredients. The pond was so refreshing for a swim. I learned so many new tools that will help me be a happier person in life. Give it a try with an open mind :) (FYI: If you have never been to an Ashram before, like me, you might not know but you need to dress modestly, meaning no bare shoulders, shorts or tight fitting clothing. This was not obvious to me when I signed up so I brought too many tank tops and shorts. Most people wear T-shirts and flowy pants.) read more

I think it is very hard to judge or give a rating for a place like ashram because spiritual practice is a highly personal experience. Although the staff was kind, food very good and my cabin clean and comfortable, it is still hard to give high rating because I did not feel good there. The main reasons are religious chants and the general feel that the environment doesn't seem happy and elevated. I spent 3 days in the ashram with a friend who has been there before and loved it. I've never been in an ashram before and I was not familiar with Sivananda yoga in particular, but I practiced Hatha yoga starting from young age and read many books. Later in life I found "explanations" for my spiritual experiences in Kundalini yoga books, and I've been practicing it for many years now. I meditate daily, have no trouble with discipline, don't take stimulants anyway (alcohol, coffee etc.), and so I expected any ashram to be deeply spiritual, blissful place. Unfortunately, it did not feel that way to me. After being in a presence of extraordinary healers and yogis elsewhere who can elevate large groups of people solely with their presence, I can say that I found practice in the ashram mechanical and repetitive. The pace of yoga classes works very well for some people, but it is not a good fit for those who are used to more intensity, dynamics and challenge (there is a set of basic asanas that are repeated in every class). I must admit I skipped most satsangs after I got a feel for them. I am accustomed to Kundalini yoga practice, so in order to stay neutral and avoid comparing them (because different styles suit different people), I will only mention the discomfort with the religious aspect of satsang. All the chants seem to be devoted to specific Gods and Deities and they are not particularly meditative. In addition, reaching deep meditative state can be taught and I felt there was no instruction in the ashram, beyond suggestions to sit peacefully and breathe. On the positive side, the grounds are very peaceful and everyone was kind. It felt really good to be in the nature and I enjoyed short hikes there. There is a 4 hour break every day at the ashram so we went to beautiful, perfectly clear Yuba river nearby to swim and cool down. Visiting Nevada City was also a very nice experience. To conclude, I understand that many, many people have wonderful experience at this ashram because the pace and the style works well for them. I think those less comfortable with the religious aspects, and with more meditation experience, may be disappointed. Although the experience is always personal, I give two stars because I've seen places that felt more elevated. read more

Stayed here an entire month. I was sad to leave, but will be back again. Beside the day-to-day happenings, there are a lot of different classes and special events here. We came for a juice fast. It was right at the beginning of the year - a perfect time to clear one's body after the holiday excesses, with good-quality tasty home-made juices twice a day, plus veggie broth in the evening. I started this fast with some trepidation, but was never really hungry during this time. When the fast was done there was more weeks of delicious vegetarian food - in all that time there was only one dish i didn't like - if they opened up a restaurant they'd have people coming from far and near. Asana and pranayama classes twice a day. I got a lot stronger and more adept after a month of this. I have some physical issues and they were quite able and willing to make adaptations for these. This is a place to do some serious work on yourself - the staff are here for the same purpose and will help you with what you need, but are not here to wait on you hand and foot. Go somewhere else for that... This is a "working farm" - but though they do grow some tasty produce here, the real growth is in the spirit. Other observations about the ashram: - The kindness of the folks living here, the sense of community - llamas, goats, alpacas, dogs, cats - beautiful quiet countryside. The narrow valley seems to keep the air still here, when it's blowing hard in other parts of the county. read more

I have been to the Ashram twice now within the past 3 years and wonder why it took me so long to go back. This place is very spiritual, open minded and gives the mind a chance to rest and focus on your inner Divine self. It's where people from all walks of life came together. Everyone is welcome to use this experience as they want. You can follow the schedule or just go one hikes all day. Plus they have animals! They have cats, dogs, llamas, cranes, fish..... the list goes on. Lastly, the staff, students and other guests I met where all so nice, friendly and respectful. I spent a month of my life here, learning to teach Yoga. It was one of the best times of my life (so far), met some amazing people (RIP jennifer Leeder) and learnt an incredible amount about life, myself and Yoga. You have to be either disciplined or willing to be disciplined if you are going here as NONE of the following are permitted; alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, caffeine, garlic, onions, mushrooms, meat....probably a lot more (oh yes and sex isn't allowed either)...bramacharya. A wonderful and insightful place where they tell you when to wake, sleep, eat, breath and much much more. I miss this place and 90% of the people I met there. read more

The Yoga Farm is my go-to place for yoga and Vedanta practice and courses. I've taken many courses there through the years, from Beginning Yoga, to Meditation Practice to the month-long Yoga Teacher Training. It's my life-long spiritual home! The teachers are individuals deep into their subject matter and highly committed. Many are Swamis. I've grown and learned there from these exceptional and inspiring human beings. If you haven't been to the Sivananda Yoga Farm, Grass Valley, I highly recommend you go for beautiful retreat. Pick an event to attend and I would gaurantee you will come home with more knowledge for you spirituality than when you arrived. Not just by what you learn from the course but for just being at the ashram and having time to think and reflect and BE. The Sivananda Yoga Farm is an authentic hatha yoga ashram. You just don't find places like this is the states. This ashram is one of a kind in the states, from the asana classes, meditation, lectures by Swami's and courses to study. I completed the Week-end Meditation Course and the 5-day Introduction to Yoga course. Here's my summary: 1. Expect to learn all facets of Yoga - from Pranayama (breathing), Chanting, Ayurveda (Healing, Health, Diet), Meditation, and Asanas (the Poses) 2. The place is simple, beautiful, and conducive to relaxing. 3. Unless you are the type of person who needs to use the bathroom at night, then try the campsites or the shanti shared cabins. I used the Deluxe cabin with its own bathroom and small dining area, and air conditioning and I loved staying there! 4. The instructors you will get are also learning how to instruct so they will be utilizing their notes and books. The good news is classes are usually small and the teachers are more than willing to help you learn the material or slowly learn the poses. 5. Highly recommend the book they cover. It's a very good read! It is true that they have a schedule that starts at 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. But if you are open to learning something new and giving their program a chance, you will most likely reap the benefits of the wellness they are talking about.....just as an example, as I drove home after this retreat I was singing the chants for 3 hours (not once did I turn on the radio). read more

The quality of the courses, the daily meals, and yoga classes is superb.
