The men and women that work there are very kind and gracious. Everyone was well meaning, I think. However, the "teacher"/"guide" that I spoke to to discuss my intentions and what not for my experience my first day there said and I quote (because it left such a yucky taste in my mouth) "we sell spirituality here." Spirituality is not something to be owned or monetized. This is wrong! I also went to a talk given by another "teacher" there who spoke that suicide was a sin, and playing jazz music was existing on a lower level of consciousness. Sure, I am not giving you the context in which these things were said. But they were said none-the-less. This is all said from a place of ignorance, I realize that, but words have power, we need to be careful with our language and both those statements are hurtful and dangerous to preach, especially from a place of power as a "teacher." Yucko!!

I stayed in the Krishna cabin which is the last cabin on the way out to Bald Mountain (a lovely 360 degree look-out spot on the Sierra foothills). This is as close to a 5 star cabin in the forest as I could have imagined. Everything I could imagine needing was here. Simple but complete. The temple is absolutely silent. You can hear your heart beat in there. A powerful place for renewing your spirit and deeply refreshing for the dive back into civilization. And perhaps this is true civilization! :)

I was a loyal member of Sweat Studio when it was located in Nevada City and continued to support the business after it moved to Grass Valley, even referring others and maintaining my membership through COVID. The expanded space allowed for more classes and room to participate. However, over time I became uncomfortable with certain aspects of how the studio was operated. Classes are consistently heated to around 105-108 degrees, and members are strongly discouraged from leaving the room if they feel overheated or unwell. While I understand the purpose of heated classes, I believe participants should be able to take breaks for their own health and safety without judgment. Additionally, the studio environment increasingly reflected the political views of the owner. Posters and messaging expressing political opinions were displayed in the space, which I found distracting in what I expected to be a neutral setting focused on wellness. I also experienced challenges with how concerns were handled. For example, I reported issues with another male member's behavior over an extended period and did not feel supported or reassured that the matter was being addressed. People also are allowed to park in the handicapped parking spot when able bodied. At times, I also sensed inconsistent treatment among clients, which impacted the overall atmosphere. While there are aspects of Sweat Studio that many people may enjoy, my personal experience ultimately led me to look for a fitness environment where I feel more comfortable, supported, and safe.

Since the start of the pandemic I lost some of my healthy routines and gained weight. I have always been a runner and a yogi, but it has been difficult to lose this pandemic weight just through running, and unlike the Bay Area, in the summer it's too hot to run up here! I also have a strong aversion to lifting weights, I would have never considered it "fun". In the short 3 months I have been here, Sweat Studio has completely changed by life and my body. Shelly, the owner is a fantastic teacher, highly motivating, and so kind and welcoming to beginners like me. For the first time in my life, I enjoy working out and feel motivated to push myself past my physical comfort zone. I strongly recommend that you check out the variety of classes they have here- hot yoga, dance, pilates, sculpt, circuit training, and cycling. There are also a variety of teachers and styles- so if you are looking for someone to kick your butt as you sweat to Cardi B or let your stress go in child's pose, I promise there is a teacher for you. I especially enjoyed the rain drum and the giant gong. Ask about her home-made teas and herbal balms and salves, she is also very skilled in the art of herbalism! I went on a long acoustic journey in her healing studio- It felt like listening to a story being woven with an infinite array of beautiful sounds. I laid back in a relaxing & comfy position, sipped some homemade tea that helped relax into the journey, and enjoyed the beautiful shimmering surroundings and pleasant smells during the entire session. She cares about her clients and puts so much effort into creating a custom experience for each person, to give us what we really need in that moment. A+, highly recommended. I spent four days and three nights at Pleasant Valley in July and thought it was overall a very…read moregood experience. When it comes to yoga retreats, you generally have the option of an insanely expensive luxury resort experience or a commune off the grid for hippies,and this was definitely the latter. I did the "personal retreat", where you show up on whatever days are convenient for you and participate in whatever activities you want. They have yoga for two hours each morning. The temperature at that time is perfect, and then it gets oppressively hot for the rest of the day. The first day, Dennis was our instructor. While he's very nice, it was an awful class. He didn't explain much of anything, the transitions were awkward, and his adjustments were not helpful. The class was so bad that I considered leaving Pleasant Valley early, despite having already paid for everything. Fortunately, we had a different instructor the rest of the time (British lady, I can't remember her name), and she was fantastic. Each of her classes was different, but all of them were really good. The other guests were in agreement. Each yoga class ended with a long meditation session, and there was another meditation session at night. I would have preferred some more yoga at night and less meditation. I stayed in one of the yerts, which was nicer than I was expecting. It's a simple little cabin with a bed, a desk, and a chair. I was worried about the shared bathroom situation, but the bathroom was nice, clean, and modern, and it wasn't very far away from my cabin. The guests staying in the tents mentioned that there were a lot of bugs and noises at night, which was not an issue for me at all. The food situation is VERY hit or miss. The residents take turns cooking, and some people are naturally better than others at cooking. Out of five meals, two were really good, one was OK, and the other two were horrible. Not wanting to take a chance or waste the calories, I left before breakfast on my last day. Based on their comments, the residents clearly recognize the difference in cooking abilities, so maybe it would make more sense to let the people who enjoy and are good at cooking do a disproportionate share of the cooking. July is extremely hot in this area, so I drove down to the river with the other guests. The cold river water was perfect for swimming in the heat. It would have been a very difficult and unsafe hike to the river on the winding mountain road, with a lot of blind corners for cars, so I would highly recommend a rental car. Overall, I had a really nice time, and I think 2-3 nights would be just about right if you're just looking to unwind and do yoga for a few days. I wouldn't have enjoyed it if I'd stayed longer than that.

I cannot wait to go back here again, the peace, comfort and prospective that I experienced here cannot be expressed in words. I found a new me that I never knew before, a person who is in control of thoughts, actions and how surrounding effect her. Every little thing about my journey was unique; nature, delicious food, teachers, sounds of nature and meditation sessions.
