I was told to find the building with a unicorn outside of it, which was actually a good tip of how to find this restaurant. But you must walk up the stairs for the entrance as the downstairs/retail level of this building is actually a bar. And when I walked in the restaurant, I found a charming spot with many old framed paintings and ornate decorations. So it was a little stuffy and the staff was not the friendliest, but you know what? This place isn't touristy unlike many of the other Bergen restaurants, so that's a win. The menu was straightforward with many different seafood entrees, a full wine list and some small bites, desserts and cocktails. I started with the salmon carpaccio and had the halibut for my main dish. And let me tell you, the food was amazing. The seafood was incredibly fresh and tasty. The salmon carpaccio had some pickled veggies with for some crunch and was light. And the halibut dish was one of the best halibut dishes I've ever had! It was so flaky with a lemon, dill sauce, dauphinoise potatoes and beans. I could've licked the plate, but this place was way too fancy for that sort of thing. The decor is fun with paintings of landscapes hanging on vibrant colored walls, velvet chairs, and a creaky wood floor. We split the scallops and the bread, and I ordered the hake with paprika sauce for myself. The bread was surprisingly light with a nice flavor. The scallops were swimming in a decadent sauce. The hake was perfectly cooked and paired with piping hot potatoes, a sumptuous sauce, and an assortment of vegetables. Overall, I had a lovely experience at Enhjorningen and would highly recommend for seafood in Bergen.

I had the teriyaki salmon and it was some of the best salmon I've ever had. The Japanese BBQ sauce paired fantastically with the fish, and the veggies and rice were just as yummy. The fish was cooked perfectly for my taste (a little on the moister side), and the dish was actually fairly large and plenty filling. Service was great. Our waitress was super friendly, knowledgeable of the menu, and spoke great English. Prices were very fair by Norwegian & Bergen standards. Knock the stereotype out of your mind that a European cafe is an exotic cosmopolitan place. Cafes do not look like the ancien Europe of the 1890's or 1920's or 1940's with Ernest Hemingway at one table, Jean Paul Sartre at a different table and Toulouse Lautrec painting people's pictures in a corner. People looking for the cliched European cafes of American's postcard imaginations are sitting ducks for the tourist trap operators. The swindlers buy some downtown real estate, decorate it in centuries old style, and charge you triple the going rate for mediocre food so you can have "the authentic European experience." A European cafe is simply a plain old everyday restaurant with a full bar. Take out the liquor and it is another version of a diner on New Jersey's Route 17 or a coffee shop on the Upper East Side. Jersey diners and Manhattan coffee shops are great places. Whether we are talking diner or coffee shop or Euro cafe, The best places have a substantial menu. There is some local food with regional dishes. There is a lot of globalized international food. It is all everyday stuff. The kitchen is good. What you are going to get is going to be comforting and tasty. It doesn't matter if the decor is 1920's or mid-century functional or 2010's normal. What matters is you are going to get a decently priced plate of normal food that will taste good and keep body and soul together for the next couple of hours. * * * Zupperia does just fine as a Euro cafe. We opted for the only two items in the "Meat Dishes" section of the menu. I had the Whale Steak (minke) which is technically a mammal, while my wife got Reindeer Entrecôte. We paired this with a Pinot Noir and Spicy Hot Chocolate. Both tasted like beef with the gamey flavor offsetted by the red wine sauce and the caramelized green beans.
