Hercules Construction had done a couple of small (less then $1,000) jobs for me when I contracted…read morewith them to do a large (over $20,000) project replacing stairs to my upstairs rental, adding decks and under-stairs dry storage rooms and fixing the kitchen porch all while I was out of town. I gave them detailed drawings which I had worked on for months. A couple of days before they started I discovered the planned on changing the design without checking with me. I told them not to change anything without talking to me and then only if there were building code issues. I left town and they started work. A couple weeks later Brad ( the owner) emailed photos and I saw they had gone ahead and built exactly the way I told him not to. When I pointed this out never explained why they ignored my instructions but said he would have them fix it. Although they did re-do the stairs and landings to match my plans, they reconstructed it on the surface without changing the underlying framing which ended up making everything out of whack with railing posts hanging half off the deck and stair supports and railings that looked like they were stuck together in a very hap-hazard way. Railings on different sides were different heights there were design differences in different sections as though they were building with different carpenters and plans from one day to the next without looking at the previous days work. Work was very sloppy. It looked like the were using dull saws as cuts were burned and rough with lots of splinter. Deck boards cut crooked. Screws in exposed areas of hand rails causing splinters where you put your hands. Deck screws not counter sunk until I pointed it out. Storage units that leak and have warped doors and only utilizing a portion of the area in my design. According to my neighbors, the workers had very bad work habits--working slowly, smoking and goofing off and leaving early with the Brad hardly ever being seen at the work site. Brad told me he knew the workers put in a full days work because he had their time sheets (which they filled out). When I got back I was very upset (Brad had never sent more photos after I saw that first problem) when I saw the work. Brad had his workers counter sink the deck screws and adjust and cut a few things but they exhibited a bad attitude and I just wanted them off my property. I had already paid for everything but the porch repair which was supposed to be less than $800 but a figured Brad would be so embarrassed by everything he wouldn't have the gall to bill me for more. To my surprise, he sent a bill for almost $5,000. I told him to come over and we could discuss what he needed to do to fix everything before I would pay him more money. He never replied. I found out later, through another contractor, that Brad had put a lien on my property. I got no official notification of this. I heard through the grapevine that he used this tactic before with other clients when they didn't want to pay for what they felt was sub-standard work. I already knew I was going to have to pay someone else to fix everything but due to the lien I sued Hercules. I got the lien removed but no money back.

    Tillman's Hardwood Floors

I have a cabin on Carpenter Lake that was built in the 30s. In the process of doing some much…read moreneeded renovation, we unearthed hardwood floors under the lovely orange sculpted carpeting my parents had installed back in the 80s (presumably a closeout leftover from the early 70s and very cheap... because I hate to think my parents actually thought that stuff looked good!). My sisters have 2 houses that are next door and were built about the same time and they also found hardwoods and had them refinished about 15 years ago so we were cautiously optimistic that perhaps we might get the same result. Last summer, I had 3 guys come in to assess the floors. One guy (don't remember his name) came over from tomahawk and pronounced them unsalvageable (which wasn't hard to believe given what they looked like). He would, however, have been very happy to install laminate or carpeting to the tune of 2500 bucks for 460 square feet. Then came Dave from Rhinelander. He said they COULD be saved -- for 3700 dollars -- but it could wind up being more depending on what the level of rot was once he actually started working there. One of the Tillman brothers came out and said "oh yeah, we can do this -- I've seen a lot worse." Took some measurements and mailed me an estimate for dustless and well, er, DUSTY sanding and refinishing. The dustless would have been about 300 bucks more than the dusty. Only problem with Tillmans was that they were booked until October -- and about that point, it was almost getting too cold for the winter to do the floors. Due to circumstances that I won't bore you with but through no fault of Tillman's, we missed the fall window of opportunity and they said I would be "first on the list" after the thaw. They called just before April 15th and said they thought it was getting warm enough to get started. They came in the first week and sanded the floors down and it was UNBELIEVABLE in terms of the transformation. The porch floors had been painted bright kelly green at one point and they looked brand new. Scott Tillman called me to give me an update (I live in NC so this was all done long distance) and said there were a couple of spots that from where the carpeting had been stapled down that had black marks and try as they did, they just couldn't get rid of those marks. Frankly, I didn't care because, well, anything had to be better than the orange carpeting (sorry mom and dad ... I know you meant well!) They came back the following week and put down 3 coats of oil and satin finish. The end result is simply UNBELIEVABLE. I showed the pictures to folks who had not seen the cabin and they literally thought I had put down brand new hardwoods in this dilapidated (but beloved) 85-year-old fishing shack! They thought I was lying when I said they were the same floors. THEN I got the bill yesterday. Now mind you, I have been working on renovating this cabin for nearly 2 years now and EVERYTHING has come back about 2/3rds more expensive than the quote so braced myself for the worst -- got out a bottle of tequila and opened the bill. DANG if the final bill wasn't actually nearly 300 bucks LESS than the original estimate. Not only do I have the most glorious hardwoods in my cabin now but by having them redone, it was at least 1/2 the cost of covering them up with even the cheapest tile or laminate or carpeting. I can't speak highly enough of the Tillmans. If I hadn't talked to 2 other flooring guys and gotten everything from "can't be done -- carpet over them" to "MAYBE but 2700 is the starting point -- it will only get more expensive once I actually get in there" I wouldn't have believed it. I understand now why the Tillmans are so booked out months in advance. They, apparently, are the only ones that are willing to do the work for a fair price and their results are simply amazing. THANK YOU Tillmans!!!! You have my undying gratitude!

Remodeling project…read more When we decided it was time to finish the lower level of our relatively new home, one of my wife's fellow Rotarians suggested we contact Brigham at Reed Building, LLC. Despite the fact that contractors in our region are very busy, Reed was able and willing to add our project to their docket. Because we were not in a rush to finish our project we would have been happy just for the fact that Reed could fit us in among their other projects. But they delivered the first wave of materials and a crew began the first phase of the project several weeks before we expected. A week or so later everything was framed up and the electrical service was roughed in. Not long after that the plastering, painting and finishing carpentry was completed. There is still more to finish -- once our vendors deliver the cabinets, tile, etc.. But based on our experience thus far the project will be finished ahead of schedule and on budget. Over the years we have built a couple of houses and I've overseen a commercial contractor complete a million dollar renovation of my place of business. Based on my previous experiences I have to rate Reed as top notch. If you have a building or remodeling project in the Minocqua area, I wholeheartedly suggest getting a bid from Reed Building, LLC.

My screened in porch on my 100 yr old log cabin turned out way beyond my expectations. I am really lucky to have hired Reed Building - I would hire them again in a heartbeat.
