The Escarpment trail starts there. This trail is hilly but gives you many different views of this area from different vantage points, all with their own beauty. The Big Carp River trail is another beautiful one that is a bit longer. The Presque Isle waterfall loop is an easy short walk with beautiful scenery. I also recommend a day hike starting at the Government peak trail and turn onto the Union Spring trail to Union Spring. I hiked these out and back during peak visiting season and had the place to myself.

All that being said, Steep Creek is a great stop for kayaking gear with experts on location. They also have real good food and drinks including fruit smoothies. I was just in there a few days ago and the manager let me know that they just picked up an espresso machine and plan on adding espresso drinks to their menu this fall. The atmosphere is sporty and a bit cluttered but fun and warm. The spirit of the northwoods outdoors enthusiast is captured in the decor and the people working there. This will continue to be a stop for us whenever we are in the area.

The trails were well marked and for the most part we could identify the trail. It seemed overgrown in parts, but I get it, they want to maintain the nature. The cove campground we stayed at was on the beach (#2). It was nice. We didn't encounter any moose or wolves...July 13-July 15 2026. We got lucky and got a shelter in Washington campground during our final night. The shelter was clean and pest free. The ranger came by twice to check on us which felt reassuring. We definitely want to return in the future to hike the other side of the island.

This is one of the least visited national parks, and it's not because it isn't worth visiting…read more Rather, it's so isolated that it needs a 3-6 hr ferry ride or a 45-60 min sea plane ride. Even then, there's only one hotel to stay in which is usually booked out pretty far in advance, unless you want to camp with potable water sources not the most reliable. Of course, this is by design in order to preserve the beautiful natural wilderness. I visited in the shoulder season in the first week of June, and there weren't that many people, emphasizing the wild solitude. It seems like all the visitors here are respectful of nature since there was not any litter nor any defacing at all. The trails here are primitive and not paved or lined with gravel. You can see so much wildlife here, from tiny amphibians the size of my fingernail to huge moose. The night sky is amazing with so many stars, and I saw the Milky Way due to the high quality of the night sky. It is very humbling. As a note, limited amounts of foraging is allowed. I didn't take anything, but I saw edible mushrooms and fiddleheads, and later in the season there's wild blueberries, strawberries, and thimbleberries. Even though it is early before the first hatch, the mosquitoes here are ferocious!

I walked off irritated and told my brother he wasn't going to look at it, and said I'll just leave and break a fucking belt! Then the parts salesman that just sold me the belt said as I walked off "At least you have a spare!" As I drove off the lot and circled to cross the toad, I seen Gordy outside not looking like he was really breaking a leg to get to that appointment that he was already late for! None the less, it really didn't look like anorexia beat down any of their staff that would prevent them from a quick diagnosis! I will never do business with these unprofessional asshats again! The kids did a small scavenger hunt in the building and received stickers for completing. A small tree you can clim had stairs and at the top a birds nest. The facility was very clean. The kids were given nets to catch bugs or butterflies (or frogs) and we utilized the "Purple" trail as an easy hike for the kids. The playground area was just the right size and the surrounding flowers we so cheery. The restrooms were very clean as well. We would have stayed longer but had lunch plans nearby. Called Interstate Falls because it's directly on the MI/WI border, this spot is only about a 10…read moreminute drive from Ironwood, MI, and only about a 10 minute hike from the parking lot. We saw lot of fun fungi on our hike in and spotted some folks foraging some of the mushrooms and even overheard them saying that they had found some chanterelles. It was an easy hike in on the main path, or you can switch it up to some more tretcherous terrain slightly closer to the falls along the stream (hiking poles recommended if you do so, especiallyif it's been raining recently). It appears that they recently redid all of the steps down to the main waterfall, but there are probably the equivalent of a 3 or 4 story building worth of stairs, which definitely winded a member of our party experiencing some health issues. The falls themselves are about about 15 feet high and there are some miini waterfalls along the a lot of the path on your way in as well. Beware: Google Maps may send you the wrong way. Based on a sign on someone's driveway on the route that Google told us to take that says it's private property, I gather that Google regularly tries to route folks through what it thinks is a public road but is clearly private property. I feel like this happens pretty regularly and that's that Google maps also seems to be unaware of unaware of incredibly major road construction projects. Its vexing to say the least. These lousy directions cost us about 15 minutes, so be sure to double check your route and enter from the MI side, not the WI one.
