The Escarpment trail starts there. This trail is hilly but gives you many different views of this area from different vantage points, all with their own beauty. The Big Carp River trail is another beautiful one that is a bit longer. The Presque Isle waterfall loop is an easy short walk with beautiful scenery. I also recommend a day hike starting at the Government peak trail and turn onto the Union Spring trail to Union Spring. I hiked these out and back during peak visiting season and had the place to myself.

I'd like to mention the West Bluff Scenic View as the featured/primary highlight atop Brockway…read moreMountain and situated at the end of Brockway Mountain Drive. It is 1300 feet above sea level overlooking Lake Superior. Most tourists/visitors will hang out at West Bluff as sort of their reward to appreciate the surroundings hovering above Copper Harbor, MI. I was visiting back in the springtime of 2021 getting ready to take the Queen IV Ferry over to Isle Royale National Park. So...the day prior to my departure I was exploring around the sleepy town of Copper Harbor, Michigan and included this Brockway Mountain Drive as part of my activities. To arrive at the West Bluff Scenic View...you simply drive this 4-mile paved Brockway Mountain Drive until it can't go any further. And, the road begins just outside downtown Copper Harbor. While on the drive, I suggest first stopping at the Copper Harbor Overlook about 1/4 of a mile into the trek up the mountain. It can't be missed on the left hand side of the road and there'll be a scenic observation deck for you to admire the setting of the area. This overlook I believe is even better than the sceneries at West Bluff Scenic View. And between these two vista point spots, there's really no other landmark/attractions worthy of exiting your car for along the 4-mile road. Overall, the ambiance at West Bluff Scenic View was pleasant. I could envision how really picturesque the sights would be during autumn when the leaves start changing colors. In the end the landscape is good enough for hanging out 15 - 20 minutes and breathing in the fresh Upper Peninsula Michigan air. And Brockway Mountain Drive will take you about an hour or so to complete. It's short and simple.

More than a few times my husband and I just repeated "WOW WOW WOW" to each other as we drove through. At the peak you can get a really incredible, nearly 360 view of the area below and Lake Superior and in the fall the colors are spectacular. Especially on a sunny day. FYI it can get pretty windy up there! And since it's near the lake you'll get that lake effect wind and temperature so plan for a few degrees cooler than you would experience in town. And also make sure your hat, if you're wearing one, is tightly upon your noggin or you'll have to do like I did and chase it down when it blows off!

We saw lot of fun fungi on our hike in and spotted some folks foraging some of the mushrooms and even overheard them saying that they had found some chanterelles. It was an easy hike in on the main path, or you can switch it up to some more tretcherous terrain slightly closer to the falls along the stream (hiking poles recommended if you do so, especiallyif it's been raining recently). It appears that they recently redid all of the steps down to the main waterfall, but there are probably the equivalent of a 3 or 4 story building worth of stairs, which definitely winded a member of our party experiencing some health issues. The falls themselves are about about 15 feet high and there are some miini waterfalls along the a lot of the path on your way in as well. Beware: Google Maps may send you the wrong way. Based on a sign on someone's driveway on the route that Google told us to take that says it's private property, I gather that Google regularly tries to route folks through what it thinks is a public road but is clearly private property. I feel like this happens pretty regularly and that's that Google maps also seems to be unaware of unaware of incredibly major road construction projects. Its vexing to say the least. These lousy directions cost us about 15 minutes, so be sure to double check your route and enter from the MI side, not the WI one.

So it's important that we find the right mix of natural beauty and for my sanity's sake, brevity. Fallison Lake Nature Trail is a 2.5-mile loop trail rolls through rich birding terrain. The lake is surrounded by a mixed coniferous/deciduous forest of balsam fir, hemlock, red pine, white pine, sugar maple, white birch, and large-toothed and trembling aspen. The trail crosses bogs and a hemlock glade. Some of these ancient giants of the Northwoods are hundreds of years old. The longest loop of the trail goes all the way around 50-acre Fallison Lake: we took a shortcut and skipped the final bog to cut down on my whining!

Maybe this is a rhetorical question, but we didn't know that this little gem was so close by. Yes, there are steps to view the best vista of the falls. Believe me-it's worth it. Bring your sneakers or hiking boots because you are gonna wanna check out this area and it's not set up for lots of tourists (i.e. dirt trails not asphalt trails). Bathrooms are kinda rustic too. There's a shelter by the parking area. I only wish I could have gotten here by bicycle *sigh*

Cascade is a gem of a state park on the North Shore that truly has something for everyone…read more If you're looking to just visit the waterfalls, it's an easy walk less than a mile from the roadside parking into the falls! Great for children and folks who don't want to walk far. If you're looking for more, there are several trails you can take! We ended up doing a 4-mile moderate hike to the lookout point in the park - and it delivered with stunning views of Lake Superior and the trees from up high. I'll definitely be doing this one again in the fall for foliage views! I'll let the photos do the talking for this review :) The trails are mostly well-maintained, the scenery is wonderful, and we're so lucky to have yet another stunning, waterfall-laden State Park on the North Shore.

This state park is best known for a unique waterfall known as the Devil's Kettle. Why such an…read moreinteresting name? Well, it's a waterfall, except half of it plunges into a pothole in solid rock! It used to be unknown where it emerges, with many legends and interesting speculations. However, now scientists have concluded that the separate stream of water reenters the river from underground pretty soon downstream. Boo. Regardless of what is actually happening at Devil's Kettle, the state park is still quite enjoyable. The parking lot has free wifi so if you forgot to pay the entrance fee, you can get it before you depart on your hike. Stop at the composting toilet at the trail head too, while you're at it. The hike itself is very pretty, going through the woods. It's well maintained, and there are several maps on the way so you don't get disoriented. Nearing the waterfall, there are about 176 stairs down heading down to the falls & up on return. There's a small area with river access, where you can view the falls and get sprayed by the mist. Of course, stay on the path and don't get close to the falls since it can get slippery.

Stopped here specifically for Devils kettle and it was quite the sight to see!…read moreAlthough this is only a 2 mile hike, I would say it is not easy. You're pretty much on an incline the whole mile then have to descend ~200 stairs and back up another small incline to get to the kettle. Then climb those stairs to head back home. Make sure to take your time and bring water. Along the way there are plenty of lookouts and rest stops. The only bummer was that the access to the bottom of a smaller waterfall was closed. It looked like there used to be steps and a walk down but it was roped off. Another more adventurous couple scaled down to get some pics but we played it safe. If you're up north, this is a must do hike.
