Do not go here. They fraudulently billed my insurance for a teeth cleaning they never did. There was never once a toothbrush, floss, or scraper touched the entire visit. All they did was take X-rays and do a gum exam (which also was correctly billed). The hygienist was a constant upsell attempt. It felt like a sleazy car dealership. The dentist was in the room for not even 30-seconds tops. Overall it was a horrible experience. Stay as far away as possible from this place. read more

My dentist retired and referred me to Skinner Dental. It was as a horrible experience. After seeing my dentist faithfully every six months for the last 30 years I was told by Justin Skinner that I needed two crowns and had three cavities. I had lots of questions but was told that's what I needed and should get it done sooner than later. In my first visit which was to get a crown and fill two cavities I was there for three hours and at one point had to wait in the lobby because they needed my chair for another patient. Total cost of my procedures was quoted and I paid that amount. About three months later I was told I still owed more money. I was not impressed at all and while I was being worked on the dentist was leaving and seeing other patients while I sat very uncomfortably in the chair. Would not recommend them to my worst enemy!! read more

Apparently, some of the staff doesn't like you questioning cost of service. When I wanted to know about future work done to my mouth. The desk attended responded in a curt manner that she's getting a printout now. I asked about the deductible and all she did was repeat the cost. Customer service went out the window, was it because I questioned the possible bill or was she annoyed that a person of color exercised his rights. I had contacted their office about my treatment and their response was "Thanks and we'll talk to our staff." I've filed a complaint with my insurance and it looks as if I need to find a more Customer Friendly dental office. read more

BEWARE!! Unbelievably disappointed in the service that I received here!!! Thank god for the other reviews or I wouldn't have known to get a second opinion. Just like others have stated my past dentist retired and I was referred to Dr Skinner. I went for my first checkup with some slight sensitivity and wanted to know if I had a cavity. He informed me I had 2 cavities that would need to be filled but they were minor enough that I could wait till my next cleaning in 5 months. When I returned I was informed that I had now around 7 teeth that needed work done and it would cost me almost $2,500 in total. I was shocked to say the least because I am a healthy 23 who has never had a SINGLE cavity in my life. I trusted that Skinner knew what he was doing and that as a medical professional he wouldn't recommend anything I truly didn't need but I assumed very wrong. The day before my appointment I read through other peoples reviews and found that many have had similar experiences. In light of this news, I decided to schedule an appointment with another dentist and thank god I did!!! After taking x rays and doing a full exam he told me I did not even have 1 cavity. I was unbelievably relieved but also extremely angry that someone I trusted with my health tried to take advantage of me. I cannot express my level of disappointment in the care that I received at this dentist. It was emotionally upsetting to deal with cavities that I thought were my fault due to poor hygiene as well as be told to that I needed to shell out over 2k. A cherry of top of everything, my grandpa also was treated my skinner in his last few months of life. We notified him multiple times that my grandfather had dementia and that he would need to speak to my mother about any issues. While my grandpa was in an appointment, they found out that basically all of his teeth were a total loss and there was really nothing we could do about it. Instead of pulling my mother aside to speak with her, he decided to loudly announce "well they all just have to be pulled". Dentures were not an option and even if they were, I think you need to consider that fact that you are treating an 85 year old. I truly cannot believe that this happened and I want to warn anyone else to please save their money and their health. PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE. read more

GET A SECOND OPINION!! I won't be going back to a Dentist who tries to scare you into getting work done that is not necessary! I am new to SLC and Dr Skinner was recommended to me by a coworker. I had my first visit at Dr. Skinner's office for a cleaning last week and the hygienist KeIly was very good, but my overall experience left me appalled and angry. After the cleaning, I was surprised to have Dr. Skinner tell me I had decay in several teeth and needed 3 fillings which would have come to around $600 out of pocket. I questioned this because I get regular cleanings and my teeth are fairly healthy but he was insistent that I had decay and needed immediate work done. Dr. Skinner was adamant that stains (which are normal for an almost 50 YO person) in the grooves of my molars were decay when I have always known how decay shows up as black spots on dental X-rays. Again I questioned this and Dr. Skinner tried to adjust the contrast on the X-rays to prove to me that there was decay but there was none apparent to me at the time and he could not point out any decay on the X-rays either. At this time I let Dr. Skinner know that my father is a Dentist in the midwest and it would be cheaper for me to buy a plane ticket home and have my dad do the fillings if needed. Dr. Skinner dismissed me immediately at that point but offered to email me my photos and X-rays so I could send them to my dad for treatment - which was very nice of him to do. After reviewing the photos and X-rays of my teeth my dad (who is a well regarded dentist who has several national recognitions by professional dental organizations) was shocked that I was told I needed to have 3 fillings done. My dad's diagnosis was that my teeth are in excellent condition and that there was absolutely no sign of decay on the X-rays or photos from Dr. Skinner. It's very troubling to me that Dr. Skinner would have recommended that I need 3 fillings right away when that was clearly not the case. It's very important to me to build a relationship based on trust with any new healthcare provider. I do not trust Dr. Skinner as I felt he was trying to take advantage of me to strongly suggest work that didn't truly need to be done. read more

Writing about a dental practice is going to be at the mercy of many factors a) the staff b) the feel and experience of their office c) the cleanliness d) whether or not their billing practices align with your insurance. Sure, sure... it's going to be a hot mess if everything hits the fan, and as a transplant to Utah, finding the right medical professionals be it a Physician or a Dentist has been a pain-staking process. Skinner Dental was referred to me by a friend. Upon the first visit, I really liked the office. It's clean, the assistants are very friendly and professional, and their front office does exceptional work when it comes to communication, billing, and rapport. Over the last two years, I've had a myriad of work done, be it cleanings, flouride, and so on. Even if it was unfavorable, say a filling (for which I've had a few, even broken ones from my previous Dentist), Dr. Skinner has taken care of it. He's a great advocate for dental health. We all have bad habits, but Dr Skinner is professional when it comes to addressing such issues. I can trust the guy and am pleased I found a great dentist here in the valley. read more
