Honestly if there is a bad review here it literally makes no sense so if you read these reviews and see something negativo just know its bogus... Came here last year for the Adult surfing lessons before I had surgery, my surgery wouldn't allow me to go in water for at least another year so I was seriously determined to surf last summer on the east coast. Best experience ever I was actually excited to get up everyday @6 for that week just to surf in freezing water not warm clear water but NY water (not the best huh ) despite it being NY I developed a passion for a sport I never knew I would. But the instructors also helped in the process they are very professional and not up tight and try their best to get you to let your mind free and catch your first wave , which is something we all should experience in our lives riding a wave is an amazing feeling even if its just your first baby wave lol. You surf for a good amount of time break then eat your lunch ( you bring ) and on somedays we had a couple of workout sessh going on ..that's another thing surfing brings out great definition in your butt abs etc you will most deff see a change in your mood and your physique..haven't been back since Sandy but I hope everything restores back to normal ... there are great bike rental shops... food in the area to enjoy if you commute and don't wanna go back to city life right away. I just wanted to take the time to give HUGE compliments to 3 instructors: Jeremy Mo Matt I had my 1st lesson with Mo and Matt. They were both helpful, bubbly, down to earth, patient, attentive, and encouraging. I loved the vibe and energy they brought. It was because of them, I am excited to come back. They made it seem like we were just hanging out which took the edge off and made it possible to truly enjoy ourselves. Most importantly, I am largely grateful to have been instructed by Jeremy. I had another semi private lesson with 4 other girls this past Sunday morning. The waves were more aggressive than I was prepared for. Jeremy KICKED ASS! For the duration of the lesson; on more than one occasion I witnessed him coming to the rescue and guiding more than one of us through the waves at the SAME TIME. It was his selflessness, strength, courage, and passion that inclined me leave a review because it was ground breaking impressive!! Not only did Jeremy provide helpful instructions, he made us all feel safe and comfortable no matter where we were in the water - even when we felt like we were getting beaten up and wanted to give up. I can't say enough of how amazing Skudin is! They took the time to reach out to UCP to give our special needs children an opportunity to surf. One of the owners, Will, took my daughter out on the surf board. What an unbelievable experience. They were so caring, so patient, so careful. I can't say enough about them, a memory for a lifetime. Got to the tents at 11am to rent a surfboard. Was told to come back at 1pm since all the boards were being used for a kids' surf camp. Fair. I came back at 1pm and was told to go to the Hurley Surf Club up on the boardwalk to do the rental. Ok. Go to Surf Club. Leave cards with a guy for surfboard rental, told to go to trailer a block north to retrieve surfboard. Go to said trailer. Told to go to the tents on the beach. Go back to tents on the beach where a younger guy named Ben saw my rental wristband I was given and signaled to go ahead and pick up one of the boards next to the tent and I was free to hop in the water and surf. Stayed 20 minutes in the water, then a surf instructor in a not-so-nice-tone tells me I'm not allowed to surf in that particular area because they're hosting lessons, and that I'd need to go to another beach two jetties away, and that I'd need to wear their official rashguard. I go back to Ben at the tent, who calls somebody and confirms that I'm not allowed to surf in that area and instead needed to go to another beach three jetties away. I ask for my cards back, thankfully they gave them back. All I wanted to do was rent a board and go surf. read more

I finished an adult surf camp today at Rockaway beach and really loved it. I recommend it for anyone that is starting off surfing, wants to do it for fun, and/or are looking to get better. I live in Manhattan, but am at Rockaway for the month of August as a little "staycation/work from home/the beach." So, it was a fun activity to do while I was here. I signed up for a 5 day package, but got a little confused with the dates on the website, so was only able to do 3 days. The company was so great in refunding me the difference, which is something you don't see these days. It really shows how much of a family company they are. Also, I am not sure how I thought I could do 5 days. I was sore after day 1! By day 3, I really didn't know if I could go on! The instructors are so helpful. I particularly enjoyed learning from Eric. He has the right combo of teaching and making sure you are comfortable, but also pushing you into the wave so that you get out there. It is also great that the kids camp happens simultaneously next to the adults. There's something about seeing the kids be so fearless and have so much fun in the water that makes you happy and inspires you. I'll definitely be back , but first I have to recover from all my wipe outs. read more

My friend and I had the best time. We took the adult group lesson and it was perfect! The instructors, Brian, Mike and Roy were amazing! They gave us an on land overview of how to stand up and some safety info and then off in to the water we went. I was surfing, riding waves! Woohoo! I'll def be going back again. read more

I called Skudin and they were really friendly and worked their magic to line up a winter/spring surf lesson for three the next morning. This is my first Yelp review ever but I have to share the joy! I signed up for a semi private lesson with three of my girlfriends and we had the best time ever! Ashley our instructor was excellent, clear, and fun! It It was our first time surfing and we all were able to get up and ride the waves (with help :) ) !! Even more importantly, I must comment on the attitude of the entire staff. They were friendly, patient and basically unbelievable as we had some logistical problems at the start that they totally worked out for us! Five stars for customer service!! This place is great! The instructors are right on with the kids. They make it fun and safe! My daughter attended one of the summer camps and this last weekend we went to an event because they were hosting clinics at the event. Alex was instructor and he was great. Over the summer OC and Adam and the rest of the instructors were point on. Not only are they a business but they are a part of the community. My husband booked a group lesson in the beginning of the summer for both of us and we haven't stopped surfing since then! I have taken group lessons, private and semi-private lessons with the Skudin team and can't recommend them enough. Couldn't find the location and the area was vigorously patrolled by "law enforcement", specifically looking for people who were not from the area. Despite emailing Skudin looking for a location to plug into my GPS, I was told, to "just look for west end parking lot", didn't see any signs for said parking lot. It would've been nice to get a heads up or some sort of direction on how to get there and where to go. If it's your first time going here, don't, but if you insist on proceeding, don't expect guidance because you won't receive any. read more

My experience at the Skudin Adult Performace Clinic was exactly what I had anticipated and hoped it would be. Our instructor Adam was very personable, knowlegable, and most importantly, an excellent positive teacher. He instantly made our small group feel comfortable. He carefully listened to what aspects of our surfing we wanted to improve. As we surfed, he sat on the beach and recorded our session. Then as a group he reviewed our waves and offered tips on things we needed to work on in order to improve our technique. After our second session, each of us made improvements, which after all.... was the goal of the day. I own and operate Stacey's Surf and Paddle in Margate NJ and  I frequently go to other camps where I can be the student and enjoy the magic that happens when you put like minded people together in the ocean. Skudin Surf has a great group of instructors who took the time to teach us the basics on land, how to lay on a board, how to get up and where to place our feet. They watched each one of us get up one by one and critiqued us on what we did right and wrong. All with good spirit and making sure we had a good time. After ~15 minutes on land, they took us out to the water and I guarantee if you listened to what they taught you on land, you'll catch a wave by the end of your lesson. They made it as easy as can be, as we lay on our foam longboards and they pushed us into the wave and told us when to get up. Super fun and great group of guys who'd I recommend to anyone that is looking to surf. We took our lessons at Lincoln Blvd., Long Beach, which is a designated all-season long surf spot. Tame 1-2 ft. waves with clean sand (no seaweed/plants), with a rare occasion of a crab or critter. The water is about 4 feet high at 40 feet out, which made surfing easy because you didn't have to tire yourself out by paddling over the waves, but focus more on catching and riding the wave. I also had the chance to meet Will Skudin who was a down-to-earth funny guy. He and his crew definitely made surfing a lot of fun, so much that I'm looking to buy my very own surfboard. read more

My first ever Yelp review written...just had to do it since this was such a great experience. Had my first surfing lesson with Ollie. He was very nice and a great instructor. My biggest fear was the cold water. Ollie got me all set up with west suit, gloves, hood, and booties for my feet....water wasn't cold at all once I got all sutied up. He definitely hussled out there with me to make sure I was catching good waves. Had me riding on waves within 15 minutes of the class starting. Didn' t take long before we went further out to catch some better waves as they first started breaking. Great instructor!!! Tons of fun!!! Will be back next weekend as I am now addicted! read more

I can't give high enough praise for Skudin Surf. My husband and I have taken 3 semi-private lessons over the past 4 weekends, and love everything about Skudin Surf! It's clear that the instructors are expert surfers, but they're also fantastic teachers: Thor and Mikey were patient, encouraging, knowledgeable and fun! Will took the time to introduce himself to us and, at one point during our first lesson, called both of us to shore for some pointers (placement of front foot, stance) that enabled us to get up, stay up, and cut up the line (or steer, for novices like me). I love that Will - one of the top-ranked surfers IN THE WORLD - has shared his talent and skill with locals. I love that the waves are challenging but approachable, and I love that Thor and Mikey made it their goal to get us comfortable with surfing. Great surf lessons. Had a great time. Learned the basics. My instructor (an Aussie who's name I can't remember) was very patient and explained everything, including what I was doing right and wrong, in great detail. Once in the water me and the girl I was in the lesson with were both able to catch and ride a few waves. Which for first time means we were taught correctly. I'd definitely take more lessons with them to progress even further. read more

Skudin Surf is an amazing operation. Every day in summer, they manage 50 kids in the water in different stages of learning, and everyone is always happy. the kids, the instructors, the parents. They run a tight ship. everything is organized. Cliff has a Masters Degree in Phys Ed and it shows. All the instructors are super enthusiastic and do not stop until they have each kid standing. They mix it up with wate rgames, volleyball, snacks, and other beach games. They are super into water safety as well. They do not hesitate to cancel the session in the rare event that they find conditions unsafe. if you are traveling from far away, it is well worth teh trip but you might want to call first and ake sure the conditions for the day are deemed "OK". read more

Did a group lesson via Living social, and it was BEYOND my expectations! I've taken 4 group lessons from different companies in Hawaii, Belmar and Long Beach and this class was the ABSOLUTE BEST! Very organized, extremely professional. Being afraid of the open water (and sharks!) kept me away from learning how to surf, but I felt EXTREMELY relaxed with this surf school. I will never use anyone else other than SKUDIN SURF! Kudos to Jeff Anthony, such a friendly, awesome person and awesome awesome instructor! There were plenty of instructors present during the lesson. And despite having at least 15+ people in the group, I felt like I received a 1:1 private instruction. I can't wait to get out in the water with these guys again! Thank you for an awesome experience. While the owner, Will Skudin demonstrates genuine enthusiasm for teaching students how to surf, the overall customer service at Skudin Surf is poor. Staff attitudes range somewhere between solidly indifferent to downright condescending and rude. It's a pity that Mr. Skudin's staff is not more interested in connecting with the student/customer,who is essentially paying them to hangout at the beach and share their love for surfing. read more

AMAZING! AMAZING! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! My two kids, 10 and 7, are finishing Skudin Surf Camp this week in Atlantic Beach. From the instructors to the owners, they are a fantastic group of knowledgeable, kid friendly, and all around fabulous individuals. In the first three days alone, the kids learned about rip currents, waves, winds, ocean safety, safe surfing skills and life lessons about gratitude. Skudin had taught my kids to be confident and skilled. I am utterly impressed! The other day I shot 900 pictures during the four hour surf camp - I couldn't help myself. My kids were standing up and riding their boards to shore. More impressive than that was looking at the instructors in the pics. They are smiling ear to ear and cheering for the kids in EVERY picture. They love instructing the kids and it is apparent in the success of the students. Their enthusiasm and positive attitudes are contagious! My kids begged to take more surf lessons with them! As a result of this great experience, my kids are hooked! We will be surfing with Skudin for years to come! Thank you Will and Woody Skudin! The Skudin Camp and their staff provide an excellent and consistent product. I've participated in the adult camp and several private lessons. The instructors are knowledgeable, helpful, encouraging and they keep it very real! The Skudin's are true "hands-on" professionals and interact with customers on the beach, both kids and adults. They and their staff,, from instructors to the staff that work at The Shack and at the check-in tables, are role models for all ages. After becoming a more familiar and confident student, the instructors pushed me beyond my comfort zone, coaching me to use what I had learned and just do it. That entailed studying the water/ conditions, checking the line-up, keeping an eye on other surfers and paddling in on my own waves. Instead of sitting in the water like a buoy, I implemented what they had coached and have been able to catch waves on my own. This encouragement has propelled me into surfing at the designated beaches on my own, using my skills, asking questions and staying humble!! My daughter is having her 12th birthday party there in a few weeks and she is also totally hooked on surfing because of her exposure at Skudin Surf.
