Use caution. Shady business practices. I purchased 2 surf lessons for the Winter Warriors program and the day after caught a really bad cold. I emailed (a day in advance) to let them know I can't make the lesson and did not hear back. I then tried calling several times, left two more emails, but they've seemed to disappear from the face of the earth. I've taken classes with them before and was very excited to try the winter programs, but I'm now considering filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or escalating to my credit card company, since Skudin is holding hostage my $150 and completely unresponsive. Terrible customer service, complete disregard for honest business practices and protecting the client. read more

On our trip to Long Island (from Western NY) we decided to sign up our grandson (9 1/2 years old) for surf camp. We were hoping for a good experience (Jacob had never surfed before) and wound up with a great one. So MUCH more than we expected. I was hoping for a few instructors basically keeping tabs on the kids and turns out the students were never more than 5-10 feet from the instructors. Each and every one instructive and supportive. We had a surf lesson yesterday, our instructor was Dan. it was awesome! Dan was careful to go over safety and a few basics before we got in the water. in the water Dan was great at putting us on waves. We both did really well and had tons of fun. Dan gave really good pointers after watching us surf and wipe out haha. The overall operation of the surf school is very organized and all the staff were really nice. A great experience! read more

Skudin is the reason I bought a surfboard. True story. We arrived slightly late for our group lesson. No worries, we were given wetsuits and red rash guards and introduced to our instructors. Being mid-September, there were only seven students in our time slot. Tropical Storm "Naughty" Nadine had given us a pretty intense groundswell. With no wind at all, we hit the surf. Divide the seven students by the five instructors that were working, and it was basically a private lesson. The instructors deserve 10 stars. Seriously, they seem to just exude good vibes, getting almost as excited as you when you get up for the first time. They are quick to laugh, share stories about their sport, and congratulate you on everything you get right. Above and beyond what I thought a group surf lesson could be... Would highly recommend to anybody who's ever watched Endless Summer and dreamed. read more

I took private 1:1 lessons from Skudin at Atlantic Beach. It was my first time surfing, and I just wanted to learn with zero previous experience in surfing. The teachers were great. I am slow to warm up because I am pretty shy, but each instructor worked well with me. As I am learning to surf in my 30's, I was a little self-conscious about the process, and each of my instructors made me feel comfortable but pushed me, which is a great balance. I saw myself grow, a little bit at a time, and I am picking up a sport that I want to learn more and more! I highly recommend buying a multi-lesson package of the private lessons; it's a really great deal for really professional, great lessons. I came away each day tired as heck, but invigorated, excited, and ready to learn more! Every person I encountered through my experience with Skudin, from the receptionist who takes calls at their office, to the instructors, to the other employees who were simply there at the start of my lessons to receive me, was patient, friendly, and incredibly helpful. read more

On Saturday, July 14, I wanted to practice surfing. Two weeks ago, me and my husband took semi-private lessons and I was immediately hooked. Knowing that practice is the key to getting better, I thought I would try it on my own. While paddling around, it probably looked like I was struggling (I was) and some of the instructors helped me out before the group lesson got underway. However, it didn't end there - despite my individually renting a board, the instructors took the care to include me in giving advice, including timing the pop-up, body position, and paddling beforehand to catch a wave. (For the ladies, it also helps that the male instructors are really really easy on the eyes! Rawr!) I have never ever been compelled to send an e-mail to a company about great service, but this company has definitely instilled in me a love for surfing after two tries! read more

One star for the quality of customer service. Granted, Ana always promptly returned my emails and phone calls on class confirmation months before the lesson. I'm still puzzled that, after 2 phone calls, 2 returned calls and two emails of confirmation, we couldn't manage to find their "Rockaway" location due to the fact that the living social coupons listed "Long Beach, NY" and their website listed "Arvern, NY" for their locations. Where does it say Rockaway, and WHY would they not specify that the shop is actually a tent on the beach, not on the street? Do they honestly think that beginner surf students would know what Rockaway meant when looking at locations at "Long Beach" and "Arvern, NY?" Do they expect all new surfer, some never set food on Rockaway beach except during post-Sandy volunteer cleanup effort, would know that the surf schools send their staffs and equipments to little erected tents on the beach away from the roads? We bought the Living Social RAV 4 yoga & surf on the beach. It was $80 pp for 2 hours of surfing lessons and one hour of yoga. Surf lessons were great fun once we got over the drama of having to drive to Long Beach, not finding the shop, and driving back to "Arverne, NY" by paying $4 round trip for the bridge toll and circling around Beach 67th street just to be told that they are "on Beach 67th street." Luckily I spotted the black tent on the beach and we caught the beginning of our lesson. The instructors were enthusiastic and of various qualities. Jeff was on top of his game, so was Daniel (the guy from "Brazil") who didn't mind spending time teaching the basics and giving tips for beginners. Clifford was a comic relief and great icebreaker. Yoga on the beach could have been better if the instructor was mindful of the location of the class and paying attention on how her lack of voice decreased the quality of our supposedly yoga time. Being 43,and never even holding surfing board in my hands ever,I was really worried about my decision to try it. But instructors there made me feel like a star. So calm, enthusiastic about YOUR success and YOUR good time. It had the best time. Came for an Epic Beach Day sponsored by Surfset ane Skudin Surf and had an amazing time. If there was any way to learn how to surf, I highly recommend the epic beach day package. The skudin surf guys were responsible for our surfing lessons and were super chill. We had a total of 6 instructors in the water with us, two to make sure we were able to paddle out appropriately and four to select and send us out on waves that weren't too big or too small for us to handle. At least three of the instructors with us were professional surfers and had a nice laid back vibe. Having caught 10+ waves and gotten some small pointers every few runs, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and would definitely come again. read more

On a Friday in early August, took about ten of my clients here for intro surf lessons. It was a beautiful day, and we had one of the best times all around. Skudin Surf showed everyone a great time, and almost everyone in our group were able to get up on their boards. Ill be honest, I was a little nervous at first but Skudin Surf did a great job of making me feel comfortable and safe. Signed up for the adult camp but since nobody else showed up, I was given a private lesson. Adam was my instructor (a very cool, easy going Aussie). He has been surfing for over 30 years. The weather was gloomy, a little rain and a bit cold, but that did not dampen his enthusiasm to teach me. We got into the water and the rest was history. I never thought I would be able to surf but I was riding every wave I caught, falling only once. I cut the lesson short, however, because I was nauseous and burnt out from not eating breakfast before I surfed. So eat before you surf because it is a workout. I am definitely going back again, hopefully tomorrow. read more

I signed up for one of the Living Social one-day surf camps and could not have been happier with my experience. This is an activity that I have wanted to try out for over ten years and was really excited to take a lesson. I showed up early and meet the instructor before-hand and he could not have been more enthusiastic and supportive. I showed up on a Thursday and the instructors had been giving a class all week. Instead of being frustrated with a starting over for one guy, the head instructor took me aside for 30 minutes to give me an overview of surfing techniques, talk to me about the local surf and wind conditions, and practice standing up on the board. He took me into the surf for some one-on-one time in the waves before I joined the rest of the camp. By the end of the day, I was getting up on the board about once every three attempts, but that had nothing to do with the quality of the instructors and more me being very tall with a high center of gravity and not trusting the board. During the entire day, the instructor were encouraging and did not get frustrated with me. I would absolutely recommend these guys and would gladly sign-up for another lesson. Great morning on the beach! Recommendations for others that follow... - I took my lesson at the Beach 67th St location and took the A subway train. When I got off the train, I was initially confused about where to go as I assumed they would have a physical location on the street somewhere. In reality, they just have a tent ON the beach at the Beach 67th St. access point. - I did not drink much water the day before or the morning before my lesson, therefore two hours into the surf, I started to get very dehydrated with a nasty headache. Highly recommend to drink lots of fluids the day before. They did bring some bottled water to the beach, but by then it was too late. - Even though I was wearing a rash guard, I still received some rashes on my upper arms from the friction of paddling in the waves. I would recommend wearing a long leave under-armour type shirt if you have one for extra protection. read more

We bought a LivingSocial voucher to learn to surf. I was pretty excited and nervous coming into the lesson but felt pretty frustrated when it ended. First of all, I think the two lead instructors are full of heart and passion for surfing. They make great instructors. Though I can't say the same for the few others I came across. There wasnt really enthusiasm, more like a job they just need to get through. Second of all, the class size is large. For me that translates into a hectic scene on the ocean. It's hard to peddle out to a piece of water where you are not in someone's way as they are ready to launch into a surf. The edge of the water is always free but there are no instrutors there. At the end I really felt like I didn't get much help, which is frustrating and disappointing when you enroll in a class and is excited to learn. read more

He can give you the tools you need to become a better surfer, no matter what your level. He made special arrangements to open up the shop early and set me up with an excellent board rental and a wetsuit at a fair price. I didn't need a lesson that day, but there were many return students and instructors seemed to know what they're talking about, so I'd take lesson here if I needed one. Honestly if there is a bad review here it literally makes no sense so if you read these reviews and see something negativo just know its bogus... Came here last year for the Adult surfing lessons before I had surgery, my surgery wouldn't allow me to go in water for at least another year so I was seriously determined to surf last summer on the east coast. Best experience ever I was actually excited to get up everyday @6 for that week just to surf in freezing water not warm clear water but NY water (not the best huh ) despite it being NY I developed a passion for a sport I never knew I would. But the instructors also helped in the process they are very professional and not up tight and try their best to get you to let your mind free and catch your first wave , which is something we all should experience in our lives riding a wave is an amazing feeling even if its just your first baby wave lol. You surf for a good amount of time break then eat your lunch ( you bring ) and on somedays we had a couple of workout sessh going on ..that's another thing surfing brings out great definition in your butt abs etc you will most deff see a change in your mood and your physique..haven't been back since Sandy but I hope everything restores back to normal ... there are great bike rental shops... food in the area to enjoy if you commute and don't wanna go back to city life right away. They were both helpful, bubbly, down to earth, patient, attentive, and encouraging. I loved the vibe and energy they brought. It was because of them, I am excited to come back. They made it seem like we were just hanging out which took the edge off and made it possible to truly enjoy ourselves. Most importantly, I am largely grateful to have been instructed by Jeremy. I had another semi private lesson with 4 other girls this past Sunday morning. The waves were more aggressive than I was prepared for. Jeremy KICKED ASS! For the duration of the lesson; on more than one occasion I witnessed him coming to the rescue and guiding more than one of us through the waves at the SAME TIME. It was his selflessness, strength, courage, and passion that inclined me leave a review because it was ground breaking impressive!! Got to the tents at 11am to rent a surfboard. Was told to come back at 1pm since all the boards were being used for a kids' surf camp. Fair. I came back at 1pm and was told to go to the Hurley Surf Club up on the boardwalk to do the rental. Ok. Go to Surf Club. Leave cards with a guy for surfboard rental, told to go to trailer a block north to retrieve surfboard. Go to said trailer. Told to go to the tents on the beach. Go back to tents on the beach where a younger guy named Ben saw my rental wristband I was given and signaled to go ahead and pick up one of the boards next to the tent and I was free to hop in the water and surf. Stayed 20 minutes in the water, then a surf instructor in a not-so-nice-tone tells me I'm not allowed to surf in that particular area because they're hosting lessons, and that I'd need to go to another beach two jetties away, and that I'd need to wear their official rashguard. I go back to Ben at the tent, who calls somebody and confirms that I'm not allowed to surf in that area and instead needed to go to another beach three jetties away. I ask for my cards back, thankfully they gave them back. All I wanted to do was rent a board and go surf. read more
