Cranbrook, my love! A staple in Oakland County all my life! As a child, I came here for summer…read morecamps at the Science Institute, climbed that stegosaurus, and played about in the fountains. As a teenager, Cranbrook was my rival, as I went to Country Day for high school! As an adult, Cranbrook is one of my favorite places to walk with my dog all year round. We love coming here to appreciate the House & Gardens, walk around the lake, soak in the architecture & art, and share it all with our family and friends! Every time we come here, we see photoshoots happening (and maybe I have done a few for my dog too in the past) - whether it be senior photos, weddings, family photos, or what - Cranbrook is the perfect backdrop! It's dog-friendly, if you haven't gathered that yet, and the campus is so big that there is so much to do here. Nowadays, we love parking at the art museum and walking over to the House & Gardens and around the lake to the Japanese Garden and just doing that path regularly! It's a fantastic time every time we come here and I hope we can continue doing it for years on end. Thanks for being you, Cranbrook!

It's a whole campus: art museum, sculpture garden, grounds, historic homes... The campus began when Detroit newspaper mogul George Booth and his wife Ellen Scripps Booth founded the complex, which eventually included schools, an academy of art, their house and gardens, a church, and more. The Cranbrook House is one of the many reasons to visit the campus. The house was designed for the Booths in 1908. It was designed by Detroit architect Albert Kahn, who designed it as an English Tudor estate in the Arts & Crafts style. They lived in the home for 40 years, and it does feel like a family home. We visited it as part of the Three Houses Tour that Cranbrook offers seasonally. We were only able to visit a few rooms on the main level, but they were worth visiting! The gardens around the house are also very beautiful! We spent pretty much a whole day at Cranbrook between a visit to the art museum and the Three Houses Tour! I wish we'd gotten there earlier to allow more time to explore the grounds and gardens, but the campus as a whole - and the House and Gardens - are worth a visit!

I have done yearly work volunteer events here for the last 6 years. I don't mind setting up the…read moreevents here since it's closer to home. Much of the food is donated by local stores or restaurants. They get a ton of stuff into their warehouse. They always go through the daily protocol in the big conference room. You are to wear gloves and a hair cover and beard cover for those with facial hairs. Now you can add a face mask to the attire too. You start the event work around 9am and work until 11am to noon. The warehouse job is the hardest. I have sorted through some rough looking potatoes, to water logged and decrepit looking cucumbers and tomatoes. It makes you really appreciate the foods we can easily pick through at the grocery store to get the most appealing ones. Any sign of mold gets tossed. This is the hardest of the jobs, but also the most rewarding since it's labor intensive too. I have also had the pleasure of assembling sandwiches in the kitchen too, with wheat squares of bread, some meat like slices of pork meat of some sort and cheese too. Volunteering your time and energy is greatly rewarding and so helpful to those in need. This is a great center that gives back ro the community. At the end of your day, they will brief you on how many bags or boxes of food were boxed that day. It's the only day big the original big 3 OEMs groups can collaborate and work together side by side without any intellectual property issues too.

I also can't emphasize enough…read morehow difficult it it to reach out to this type of organization so I hope we can do more as a community to make it not as difficult to reach out. I have a parent (mother) who essentially is neglected by the family but particularly the spouse in the family. The spouse will (in front of her) praise her but when she is away he will say that he is a victim of her...when in fact he is the abuser and the manipulator. She essentially spends her days alone writing notes to herself and has stopped communicating with all others including family and friends. When she does have love and kindness shown to her she replies with the same, but the spouse has no initiative to help her get any checkups related to her physical or mental health. While she physically slips away and mentally slips away even further her spouse has made no effort to help her. To me that is neglect and a form of domestic violence. In the past the violence was much more direct with physical abuse (multiple types) and verbal abuse. The victim in this case has no willpower to do anything sadly. Still I struggle to get help and to reach out to this organization or others even though I know I should because the situation is so toxic. My mother remains isolated and stuck in a loop of behaviors (repeated writing notes to herself, repeated lack of communication) that are self-destructive as well. We must do more to make the process easier and to support each other in the community because it is still very difficult..,
