Sitting on rooftops can show you a whole nother perspective on neighborhoods! I know this because DG and I were on a rooftop on Silver Strand beach yesterday, when we saw these THINGS fly by. DG knew they were called ultralights, which was more than I knew, and we both figured they were manned by some super rich hobbyist locals. We did some Googling around, and fantasizing about building our own from $10k kits in my parents' mostly-empty garage, lol. But then I stumbled upon a website for Sky Rider Ultralight (www.skyrider-ul.com), and realized they were within a half hour's drive from us! It was after hours at that point, but I called and left a message. We were both thrilled when the owner, Mike, called us back first thing the next morning and told us to come on in for a ride! Mike ended up being SUPER friendly and welcoming when we got there. He told us all about how he initially got into ultralights in 1982 as a hobby, and how his business has been around for 15 years. Apparently, he is the last business of this kind, so we felt super lucky to have found him just by a fluke! After giving us jumpsuits and gloves, we waited a bit to let some minor drizzle pass. Then we got buckled in and headset-and-goggled up. Mike took DG up in the ultralight he called "the ballerina", and Jeff took me up in "the tank". It was amazing to see DG in front of me, taxiing down the skinny runway for a short while, and then lift off and go up, up, up, up!! As we flew over farms and the 101 freeway, I was accutely aware of the wing blowing around me - since there wasn't a stitch of cover at all!! We made our way to the coast, then over the water, and along Silver Strand Beach, exactly where we saw them fly the day before. We looked DOWN on pelicans, seagulls, big waves, and the expansive beach. Below me, I even saw Mike and DG spiral down to fly SUPER close to the ocean! With headsets on, we could all communicate with each other, which was pretty cool! Even cooler is the fact that either passenger in the 2-seated craft can steer or control the height of the flight. Jeff let me try it for a minute, which was all I wanted to do - and DG said that Mike let him fly for a long time! I've been on private planes and helicopter rides with the doors off, and this is by far the MOST thrilling experience over both. Because there's NOTHING around you!! The hour long flight price ($150) is SO reasonable! Mike and Jeff were both seasoned professionals, and safety was clearly on their minds at all times. Jeff pointed out things we were seeing below us, as well as a hawk and falcon flying near us! And I took a ton of cool pictures! I highly recommend this as a surprise for your fave thrill seeker or boyfriend or husband. Mike will definitely make this an experience that you'll never forget! The flight was Amazing!! This was one of the best birthday gifts I've ever received!! Mike Chicco is a super friendly and attentive pilot. He's been flying since 1982. I love anything having to do with flying, so this flight was beyond expectations. The flight was 1/2 hour. I've done a flight lesson in a small plane before, but it didn't come close to the thrill I had when Mike took me on a ride in an ultralight. In a small plane you're just so removed from the air, but in an ultralight you feel it on your face. While we were up there a hawk soared near us, and I felt as though I was a bird. Although these guys spend so much time in the sky, flying their Ultralights, they are a really "down to Earth" bunch. The guys that work here are all very welcoming and they are also effective instructors. My father used to come to the Sky Rider Ultralight flight school when I was very young. The drive was always worth it; I loved watching my Pop take off in the Ultralight. It was an exciting experience, to be sure, and I have many fond memories of the times my family would spend in Camarillo. I finally had the opportunity to return to this place after more than a decade and I met Mike. Soon after we spoke, I found myself strapped into the Ultralight and getting ready to take off for a test run. I was amazed with the experience. Rating -10... My husband called to redeem the groupon ticket and left a message on the provided # with no greeting as a business. After waiting a week for a return phone call, he called again to redeem the ticket and a man answered the phone saying "Hello". Clearly not a company when asked, he said it was his cell phone. Gave my husband who is a private pilot, tried to explain we accidentally left the original ticket on the restaurant table so that he realizes there might someone else trying redeeming it..and he flew off the handle and gave my husband an earful and was down right rude and hung up on him. My husband called 2 more times to try to resolve before any complaints were issued the person simply got more aggravated and hung up on my husband. We will be contacting the FAA. Amazing! What a great ride and a great group of people. We were lucky enough to get this Living Social deal for half off the 30 minute flight. And even though Mike says that was his first and last Living Social or Groupon deal, we're considering going back and paying full price for the 1 hour experience. And believe me, that's saying a lot, because we don't pay full price for anything. A beautiful flight out to the coast line then you head up the beach low enough to wave to the people looking up at you. Then you circle around and return along the water flying literally 3-5 ft off the surf. You feel so close you want to dangle your feet in the water. The best part is there's no attempt for an upsell. Bring your cameras, your video cameras, your Go cameras. Take all the pictures and video you want. All they ask is that your camera (or picture phone) has a strap so you can strap it to your wrist. After all the propeller is right behind you. You lose that camera and it'll get sucked back through the propeller which will pretty much end your flight immediately. My son & I had a blast flying with Sky Rider. Mike is an awesome pilot giving his customers a friendly enjoyable & memorable experience. My son went first and as he was getting seated Mike would say don't worry I'll take care of you guys and sure enough he delivered. The sensation of the ride was almost as if just floating in the air slowly moving with spectacular view of landscape to enjoy. 3 things to note: - Sky Rider is located on the west side of the airport runway on the far north end past the control tower when you start seeing these small hangars (there's a SkyRider sign) - it's colder up in the air specially if you head towards the coast, fortunately he had a spare jumpsuit for us to wear - if you have a video camera, Mike has the bottom half of a Go-Pro mount on the front of the ultralight where I secured my own camera to with my adapter for the top half that works with that mount. read more

You absolutely have to do this. Have you ever wondered would it feel like to be able to fly, like really fly. I don't mean get stuffed in a 747 between a baby that appears to never need to a sleep and person who's idea of personal hygiene is occasionally chancing their shit, I mean fly out in the open, in the air. Well you can, and it's by doing a flight with Mike and Jeff. I'm a little bit of a nervous flyer. I don't like turbulence and somehow think planes are always going too fast when they're landing. I didn't feel a moment of nerves throughout the whole flight. Because the planes are so light you are only flying at around 50-60 MPH and you really just feel like you're floating through the air. We took off and rode over Camarillo before flying down to the beach. We flew only a few feet above the water and saw a pod of dolphins and two sharks. Mike and Jeff are both so warm, and welcoming. They really have a wonderful little community there are you feel like a part of it as soon as you arrive. We did the hour long flight and my only regret is that I couldn't go back up as soon we landed. read more

Last year I casually asked my girlfriend if birds knew how amazing it was to fly.By the time by birthday rolled around I had long forgotten about that but she had a surprise in store. We drove up to Camarillo and I had no idea what we were doing at this seemingly random airport in the middle of nowhere. Then it all became clear. I was going up in an ultra light. Well I'll tell you right off the bat that this is about as close as we can get to flying like a bird. What an incredible experience! Mike is a real, genuine character and he'll make sure you have a great time. For me that included Mike handing over the controls for most of the flight. A little nerve wracking because the 'plane' is pretty much a go-kart with wings. Half way through I was a bit relieved when Mike took back the controls. Then he told me to take out my camera. "Ready?" "For what" i thought... WOOOSH, we dive bomb the beach, pulling up at the last second, evening out a few inches above the crashing waves. Whoooa! The hour flew by and before I knew it I was bringing us back around to land. These things aren't easier to steer! "Watch out for that cargo plane!" Good times. Even if you aren't lucky enough to have a girlfriend full of surprises, it's worth your time to check this out. Only thing I'd do is ask a bit more about the limits of the Ultra Light. I wasn't sure if I could royally screw up by steering to hard to the left or right. Mike has over 60,000 flight hours under his belt (USAF) so I was confident in his hands.. but mine... well I don't think Microsoft Flight Simulator (from 1999) counts as much. read more

THINK TWICE!!!! REALLY, REALLY UPSET WITH THIS BUSINESS, IT'S OWNER & IT"S CONDUCT, DECEPTIVE BUSINESS PRACTICES!! Sadly someone who seemingly is respected and enjoying success becomes a Deceptive Scammer when it comes to offering services on Groupon (what else am I left to believe)?? Thought I did due diligence, covered the basis looking into this company and it's owner Mike Chicco (rave Yelp reviews on what a GREAT, stand up guy he is, etc. etc.) before even considering buying a Groupon Voucher for two experiences w/flight video for $150 (valued @ $390) a very special gift for someone really in need of a special "pick me up" experience. It goes downhill from there and I have never even gotten to speak to them personally or been able to share/schedule the said $390 valued experience with the person it was intended for. The voucher is ready to expire, phone messages left never returned, and now for some time you can't even leave a message as the box is full, no one ever answers the phone?? Wait it gets worse, assuming they would honor the voucher past the expiration date due to their unprofessional practices of not returning calls or answering the phone. I have in the meantime come to learn that this Groupon Offer is a complete RIPOFF by complete omission of any details other than the stated value itself which according to the pricing on their website would lead you to believe that the only possibilities to reach the value they have stated ($390 for two persons) would have to be either the "Skyrider Extreme Ocean View" @ $150 & assuming the other $90/$45pp goes toward the said video which isn't offered anywhere on the site OR the "Sunset Run" @ $160 and they are charging $35pp for the video??? Those would be the only two ways one could tally a value of $390.............. WHAT ARE THEY GIVING YOU INSTEAD.... to add insult to injury I have come to learn they are giving you their "Skyrider Discovery" flight, a 15 min ride to Santa Paula valued at $60 & apparently charging you $15 pp for the video which equals $150???? What is the problem....... you are paying FULL PRICE and the notion that you are getting the stated value of $390 on the package for 2 persons and up to 62% off as stated on the Groupon header is a complete LIE and TOTAL RIP OFF (you haven't saved anything). Utterly amazing experience. For those of you who have spent hours on Google Maps, zooming in and out of the view over your ex's house, dressed in a pterodactyl costume, you should 1. Give it up, it's over and 2. Sell that pterodactyl costume and use the funds for a much more realistic experience. Besides, you need to get out of the house anyway. This is a much better experience than Google maps as long as you stay outside the range of the restraining order. Lucy Y. and I found this place after Googling "ultralight California" after seeing a couple of the flying machines buzz past flying up the coast in Oxnard. We called and left a message, and our phone call was returned the next morning. We set up an appointment for 11:30AM and made our way out to Camarillo Airport. There was a little rain, so Mike, the owner suggested that we wait for a while until it stopped. Mike was friendly, and was even pretty entertaining. We eventually decided to go up, rain or not. We were given flight suits, as it can get pretty cold during the flight. We also got goggles and head sets so that we could communicate with each other and the other ultralight. I was given some quick flight instructions on the ground as I got to take over the controls for a while because I was Mike's copilot, and he's cool like that. A couple of warm-up laps and we were off. I was surprised at how quickly the craft took off, not even taking up the entire runway. Up in the air, we were totally out in the open, free to look out either side and even BELOW the craft! We followed the 101 for a while, and then headed out to the coast. I was taking pictures and video the entire way. When we arrived at the coast, Mike spiraled the ultralight down to the water WOOHOO!! and we coasted a few feet above it for a bit until we hit patches of rain. We then had to pull up from the water to keep the engine clear of water due to the rain. After gaining some altitude, I was given the controls for a while. I noticed that the controls were very touchy and took some time to get used to. Mike was encouraging the entire way, jumping in to steer when I started to dive. Heading back toward the airport, we encountered patches of rain that were a bit painful on the face, as we were totally out in the open. The experience was so exhilarating that it barely bothered me, though. The landing was quick and the first thing that I noticed was how quickly the air temperature warmed as we descended. Mike was patient enough to wait for us while we went to the cash machine to get dough to pay for the flight as he did not have his credit card scanner with him. A great experience that would be even better on a clear sunny day. Get out there and get UP there! read more

My boyfriend kept saying he wanted to fly in an ultralight, so after much searching around online for a birthday present, I found Skyrider... and what a find!! My boyfriend had a great time!! He got to fly right over the ocean and got to help with the flying. The instructor/owner, Mike, knows a ton about ultralights and makes the ride really enjoyable (and, he's really nice)! Plus, the prices are super reasonable!! An hour flight (and they don't short you on the time at all!) over the ocean, with just you and the instructor, for only $150! There are shorter flights for less. (I'm not even sure that they are making any money on this -- they just all love being out there and flying). It seems to be the last business around doing ultralight flights, and I really hope it stays in business! Heights are really not my thing, so I opted not to go this time, but one of the flight instructors took me for a ride around the runway so that I could see what it was like to be in the ultralight... and, next time I just might go along for the flight. If you have time to loose, try it! I called Mike from Skyrider to book a 1 hour ultralight flight for my husband, for his birthday which was 2 weeks later. After several messages to confirm time, date, rate and place (during those 2 weeks), it was finally THE DAY (today). Here is a quick review of what happened this specific day : 1. The location was wrong 2. We waited 30mn without any answer to our calls, expecting to know about what to do and where to go 3. When Mike finally called me, he told me he was waiting for me since 30 mm, that it was too late now so I would have to wait an other hour (very logic, as I booked a 1h trip. Seriously). He didn't even apologize as it was obvious he didn't give good informations nor answer the phone calls. A man of good faith for sure. 4. We went to meet him at the good location, ready to wait for an hour... to finally do this flight. BUT when we arrived we met an angry guy (Miky Miky), very unpleasant and complaining about his work and his team. We had to hear boring stories about his life with his coworkers "driving him crazy" (in his words). 5. He finally told me the flight was not possible, that we would have to reschedule it next week because he had too much to do this evening. Logic again, as he told me 10 minutes ago that we would be able to do the flight this same evening. Again, his work with Groupon was driving him crazy, which I totally didn't care because I had nothing to do with this. 6. Always accusing others and being more and more agressive, he didn't give me other choice than leave. He was still speaking when I went back to my car but I promise it was not interesting. my husband & I went out for a ride this weekend and what an AMAZING experience! We aren'tgood at hieghts, but it was no problem at all. When you get up in the sky, surounded by gorgeous Ventura County scenery and headout to the ocean, you forget about everything except the wonderment of all you see and just the total experience. My pilot let me literally fly the ultrlight, where my husband's pilot took him on a ride down along the waves, swooping up and down over gettys and piers. We both had fabulous but very different experiences. I'd recommend this in a minute. It's one of those things everyone should try at least once. Just bought a 1-hour flight as a surprise gift for my boyfriend for his birthday and what can I say: he was thrilled! I called to ask a couple of questions before booking the flight (When's the best time of day to go? Sunset. How many days do I need to book in advance? 2-3. Does he need to wear anything special? Just jeans and sneakers...) Mike was so friendly and answered all of my quickly and clearly. When we showed up for the ride, Mike was ready and waiting for us. He gave my boyfriend a flight suit, had him sign a couple of forms, put some goggles and a headset on him, then they took to the skies! When they landed, my boyfriend was THRILLED. He said it was an amazing and unforgettable experience. He kept thanking me multiple times the next day and said that it's definitely something he's going to tell his buddies about and something he is very likely to do again.
