It's difficult to see it in its entirety due to vegetation, but there is a trail that leads you down to the base of the falls. It's extremely steep and it would still probably be difficult to capture the full size of this waterfall. Some sources say it is around 200 feet tall while others say it's closer to 250 feet. Just from what I could see from the road, I'd be more inclined to agree with the 250' estimation. It is quite long and dramatic, but then again I'm not exactly sure where the fall begins since the river has quite a few cascades before the first major drop. Cullasaja Falls is the last and largest waterfall along the Cullasaja River. The others include Dry Falls and Bust Yer' But Falls (also known as Quarry Falls). In the Cherokee language, Cullasaja mean the place of honey locust. It sits on the Western side of the Eastern Continental Divide, which means the flow of water will eventually find its way to the Gulf of Mexico. Upper Moccasin Creek Falls is a true hidden treasure. If waterfalls were rated on attractiveness,…read morethis one would be a 10!!! ~~~ THE EXPERIENCE You start out on the Hemlock Falls Trail. The trail follows Moccasin Creek closely for its entire length to the falls. The beauty of Moccasin Creek is that nearly all of it is fast flowing water, loaded with endless cascades and multiple waterfalls. You will see at least a dozen waterfalls before you even reach Upper Moccasin Creek Falls. This is due to the river dropping from 2800 feet elevation to 1868 feet elevation on its way to Lake Burton. That's over 932 feet in a 5 mile stretch. There are around 7 falls between 8-12 feet tall and many more that are only 5-8 feet tall, but gorgeous in their own right. My visit was after a 4 day period of rainfall that saturated everything north of Atlanta in Georgia, so the water volume was great. Also, this sort of saturation spawns several other waterfalls that would likely be dry in a less rainy seasons. We found THREE large ribbon-like waterfalls at least 35-50' in height just off the trail looking into the woods. They were not on Moccasin Creek itself, but acted as tributaries [a river or stream flowing into a larger river or body of water]. There is even a small 5 foot waterfall directly on the trail. ~~~ UPPER MOCCASIN CREEK FALLS On my first attempt I was defeated trying to make it to this 2nd waterfall, which is a gorgeous 40' drop upstream. I tried to follow the trail past Hemlock Falls, but did not realize you must cross through Moccasin Creek about 50 yards past the crest of the falls. Once on the other side of the creek you will pick up a faint trail that keeps you above the river most of the 3/4 of a mile journey. I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH that you MUST CROSS through the creek above Hemlock Falls. On my first attempt a few weeks prior, I did not cross through the creek and went as far as I could before reaching an impenetrable rhododendron patch. To reach Upper Moccasin Creek Falls, the creek must be on your right side, not your left. * * * NOTE - The trail to Upper Moccasin Creek Falls is considerably more difficult than the first half of the trail to Hemlock Falls. The trail is not too hard to follow, but it can be hard to see at times if you aren't familiar with hiking. Also, it can be very dangerous in some areas because sheer drops of 30-50 feet are only one footstep away. You will have to climb over and around lots of downed trees. * * * WEAR SHOES WITH GRIP, otherwise don't bother with this trail on days after recent rainfall. Once you reach the falls, we found the easiest trail down to the base was closest to the top of the falls. I regret not using a small spur trail to visit the top of the falls while heading down to the base. Satellite images on Google Earth show what looks like another smaller waterfall or cascade just above Upper Moccasin Creek Falls. ~~~ [ THINGS TO KNOW ] Hiking Distance: 3.5 miles (roundtrip) Difficulty: Moderate (I do not recommend for children under 12 or elderly) Creek Crossings: YES (1 bridged & 1 directly though Moccasin Creek) Elevation Gain: 752 feet Waterfall Height: Approx 40 feet Access to top of falls: YES Access to base of falls: YES Pool of water @ base of Falls: YES Sitting areas @ base: YES RESTROOMS: NO PARKING: YES (12+ cars) ~~~ FINAL THOUGHTS Upper Moccasin Creek Falls is one of the most attractive waterfalls I've seen on one of the most attractive rivers in the state. It is full of cascades and secondary waterfalls to delight the ears and dazzle the eyes. But it is not for the casual walker, it requires a little skill and spirit of adventure. If I knew that Upper Moccasin Creek Falls was as pretty as it ended up being, I would have visited…read moreit sooner when I paid Hemlock Falls Trail a visit a couple years back! So lets start there. To even reach Upper Moccasin Creek falls, you first need to get yourself to Hemlock falls Trail, which is right across the street from Moccasin Creek State park. Drive on into the Hemlock falls trail, which turns into dirt/gravel road. There'll be a trail parking lot and a noticeable trail that ultimately takes you to Hemlock Falls, which is about a mile to Hemlock falls. If you make it to Hemlock falls, which is a fine waterfall, that's just fine! However, if you want to see a much bigger, larger and "whoa" worthy falls, take the trail to just to the right of the opening that leads you to Hemlock. First things first, and this is a cautionary tale from Richard R. If you want to get to Upper Moccasin Creek falls, you have to cross the flowing water above Hemlock falls so that the creek is on your right. Yep, the water feeding hemlock is what you need to cross. When we did cross it it ended up being for us, just about knee deep (I'm 6'1"). Once you cross over, the trail to Upper Moccasin Creek is easily able to follow, but while easy to follow, understand it's also much more challenging than the trail to Hemlock. While more challenging, it's not overbearing or impossible to do. It is slippery, muddy at times, which sucks because the trail sometimes narrows to some pretty large drops you don't want to be a victim of. Heading to the actual falls requires you going down a steep decline to a large set of rocks that rest right in front of the falls. Stand on this (CAREFULLY) and bask at the glory. The actual waterfall is roughly 40 feet, and it crashes powerfully into a pool just at the bottom of the falls. Can you swim in the pool? I don't see why not but I didn't. You can't take bad photos here and while it was tiresome to get here, I think it was worth it. This is coming from a guy who does NOT like getting wet on hikes. Just over 3 miles is the round trip of this hike, and again while the trail to hemlock is not so bad, Upper Moccasin is a bit more of a challenge. I don't recommend tackling this by yourself. Long story short, the falls here were beautiful, which includes Hemlock falls. If you're in this area and you want to see a really beautiful fall that requires some work to get to it, do yourself a favor and check it out!

We saw about 3 scenic spots to take pictures and along the trail they had signs for other trails(which weren't that much of a detour). At the end of the trail to get to the twin falls it was breathing, well worth the hike but it was very strenuous.

Since we saw no indication for a trail, I just parked in the best spot possible as I listened for the falls with my car windows down. Turns out when I got out of the car and walked over to the edge of the road, there was a STEEP trail barely visible through the vegetation. The trail leads straight down to the creek, where you will encounter the upper part of the falls. Look to your right and continue downhill to the base of the upper falls, which is about 25-30 feet tall. This was as far as I explored and I was bummed to find out after getting home that there were TWO more waterfalls just a short distance below what I thought was the main falls. The second one is 35 feet tall, multilayered and quite spectacular based on the online pictures I found. The third is shorter, but still attractive. So if you come here, please note the distance to the falls is VERY short, but it is also VERY STEEP and semi-difficult, especially on the return. Enjoy! 2019/77

We also combined the Interpretive Nature Trail with the Station Cove Trail, which made for a longer, albeit nice hike around 3.1 miles. There's about a 260 ft. elevation gain, but wooden steps help with this ascent and then descent. Usually such a long walk would make my leg muscles ache the next day, but strangely enough I felt no soreness. I guess that means that I'm finally in shape enough to handle longer hikes. Woohoo! The large pond or small lake, depending on your opinion of what a body of 4 acres should be, was beautiful and shimmering in green and blue hues. Didn't see any fish or other creatures in it, but it is supposed to be full with bluegill and largemouth bass. Maybe we'll return for some fishing. Not long after the nature trail joins the falls trail you'll cross over Oconee Station Rd. There is an area for parking cars and from here the trail to the waterfall is about 0.75 mile, so if you prefer a shorter version this is it. I loved seeing the flowers starting to bloom and caught some good pictures of bloodroots and hepaticas. Down by one of the creeks an open area under a rock revealed animal footprints (maybe a raccoon?), which was cool to spot. There were more than a few trees down (probably from Hurricane Helene), but not completely obstructing the trail. As you approach the waterfall you step over some rocks from Station Creek to the other side. I'm glad that we had a good rainfall the day before, because it made for a great rush of water. Truly beautiful and my favorite falls discovered so far. We did run into a few people so it's definitely not an isolated area by any means (and we went on a Monday morning) although we did not meet another soul on the nature trail. Also, between the 3rd and 4th bridge is the Oconee Connector Trail which leads to Oconee State Park in case you want to add another 5.4 miles (I think) round trip to this one, but beware it apparently has an 800 ft. elevation change. Maybe one day I'll brave it. Overall, this was a great hike and our boys really enjoyed the beauty of the waterfall and easily travailed it. Looking forward to come back one day soon! Happy yelping!

The hike to Lee Falls is similar to some relationships, beautiful and easygoing in the beginning,…read moreyet difficult and tumultuous in the end. Lee Falls sure is a pretty girl or handsome guy (depending on your preference), but man, what you have to go through to be with Lee might make you wonder if the hike is actually worth it in the end! { DRIVING NOTES } The drive to Lee Falls was a tad confusing, kinda like bumbling over words when you first introduce yourself to someone. I approached the falls heading north on Hwy 11 and then turning left onto Cheohee Valley Road. I sometimes bring a notepad with me and self drawn maps with directions just in case I lose signal or my phone battery dies. My map had me turning left off Cheohee Valley Road onto Tamassee Knob Road, which is correct. However, Tamassee Knob Road meets Cheohee Valley Road TWICE, and I was supposed to take the second left, not the first. I was taken off course slightly, but eventually found my way to the trailhead parking area. { THE HIKE } Once parked, I headed past the large gate into a field of gorgeous green grass several football fields in length. There are NO blazes on this trail to tell you where to go, however, someone did tie ribbons to trees in key spots to give some sort of direction. Sometimes the ribbons are blue, other times they were orange. At the end of the first field, you will need to cross directly through the Tamassee Creek. There is no footbridge here and you will most definitely get your shoes wet. Actually, there are a total of 6 water crossings, so wear proper shoes and bring an extra pair + socks to change into when you return to your car after the hike. After the first creek crossing, you will enter into the second of FOUR grassy fields. This field is by far the prettiest as it has an island of trees in the center. I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to own this land and build a home here. It truly is what I would expect Hanzel & Gretel's land to look like from childhood fairy tales. A small strip of woods separates the second field from the third. At the end of the third grassy field you will cross Tamassee Creek once again before entering into the fourth and final field. It will be all forest from here, but be forewarned: the trail will become more difficult to follow the closer you get to the falls. This literally is the part of your relationship with Lee where you start to have doubts, but you fight through them to make the relationship work! --- Once you cross the creek for the 6th time, the hike takes a turn from pleasant (grassy fields), then confusing (forest) to outright difficult (the final climb). Each step you make will be heavily calculated and your route to the falls will be determined by your own security. The trail becomes undefined and you will scramble over rocks, huge boulders, downed trees and through the creek itself to make your way to the falls. Talk about relationship obstacles! Although the falls are easily within view, it is an uphill battle to get to the best viewing area. It is very likely you will need to stop and catch your breath. It is this part of my relationship with Lee Falls that I wondered if all of this fighting to be together was worth it. But I pressed on, determined to make it work! { THE FALLS } Once you reach a satisfactory viewing area, take a snack & water break! You have truly earned it! Soak in the sights and sounds of nature as you stare 70 feet up at Lee Falls in all its mossy beauty. Truly one of the most unique waterfalls I've ever seen in the South. My favorite spot was leaning against a large boulder in the middle of the river. Oddly as I looked down I caught the remains of a frog trapped in between two stones. "I feel you bro" I whispered. { FINAL THOUGHTS } I spent about 15 minutes with Lee regaining my strength before saying my farewell and heading back to my car. The return down the boulders was no less difficult, but at least I could walk though the woods more confidently than I did when I first encountered the difficult to follow trail. It's so true that difficulties make you smarter & stronger. The trail to Lee certainly took me through the ringer, but I emerged wiser from the experience nonetheless. It was a short fling that I will always remember. SCOUTING NOTES: * The parking area along 715A is to the right just before you cross the creek. *Parking area can easily handle a dozen or more cars. * Road to the parking area is gravel, but smooth. * Some parts of the FIRST grassy field can be really muddy. Best not to follow the path through the grass. Instead stay close to the treeline on the left for this field. * Trail is approximately 1.5 miles in length to the falls. The first half is super easy & pleasant. * Pack a lunch! You're gonna want to stay here for a while. * Bring extra shoes & socks to change into after the hike. Several crossings have ankle deep water. * NO RESTROOMS * NO PARKING FEES 2019/45

The trail starts at a gate connected to the first of many grassy fields that you have to pass through. This is the part that didn't seem like most trails I've done. It was mostly tall grass, but there was a beaten path that you could find and walk on. Even though it was beautiful, it was in direct sunlight, so depending on the season and time of day, you could be a little warm and easily sunburn if you are not prepared! There are also a handful of water crossings, so wear Chocos or bring another pair of socks and shoes. This is not a trail for the weak! Or for people who prefer a nice, well laid out pathway. I barely noticed trail markers or blaze markers. It is kind of hard to follow at times. The trail was very narrow and full of foliage. There is no way to avoid the plants touching you. Some kind of plant that is similar to poison ivy was everywhere and made me itch like crazy. But once I got to one of the water crossings, I was able to wash my legs off and feel better. Once you get closer to the waterfall, you have to almost rock climb and navigate through a really rocky area to make it to the top of the falls. But all of this was worth it when you finally reach the falls. WOW. It is huge! And there are several spots to rest on the rocks as you take in this lovely view. There are no bathrooms, so make sure you stop somewhere before you get there.
