Everything went smoothly: getting through the PASSENGERS ONLY point was easy and their check in counters were easy to find. We were mindful and were compliant about the weight of our bags, so we knew that wasn't going to be an issue. What I liked is they taped up the zipper latches (at least those that weren't secured or locked) to avoid accidental snags or openings during transit. The staff were very friendly - even making a strong point and advised us that gate assignments happen frequently and to be mindful of it. No biggie. The flight was short and smooth. Snacks on the plane were available for purchase, but given it was less than an hour flight (plus we had hours before our flight, so we snacked during the wait) we didn't feel the need for it. And I hate to admit this, but I did my research and didn't expect much, but I'm glad they proved me wrong! Excellent first run! AirAsia - please keep it up!

The open service counters were VERY SLOW. The staff working the counters as I observed were working at a VERY SLOW pace with no sense of urgency. If you like waiting in very long lines and receiving SUPER SLOW SERVICE, fly AirAsia. The planes itself were basic. The isles were narrow. If you are fat, good luck squeezing in. The flight crew looked stress. Thumbs down to AirAsia Philippines overall.

Then we also travelled from Philippines to Japan for our family and friends vacation. As well as our Manila to Boracay trip. We haven't used Philippine Airlines for 8 years as we've been booking with other airlines for our previous flights to Philippines. We decided to try Philippine Airlines since they are the only airline that flies direct. Also because they were highly recommended to us by family and friends for the best customer care. We experienced excellent customer care for all our travels both international and domestic. Great experience for us from checking in at the counter to the flight attendants on board and all the way to the captain navigating the plane for take off and smooth landing. Philippine Airlines staff at check in as well as flight attendants onboard provided our child with specialized meals due to our child's peanut and tree nut allergies. They were accommodating. They catered to families with food allergies. The flight attendants were consistent with delivering our child's peanut free and nut free meals half hour before serving everyone's meals to avoid cross contamination. Thank you so much to the amazing staff of Philippine Airlines. You guys are excellent. Mabuhay!

We booked our flight through Hawaiian/Alaska connection through Japan via Japan airlines to Manila and PAL back to Japan. Upon checking in at NAIA the ladies told us we had to pay for our check in luggages $120 each even though we didn't pay anything at all as we were allowed 2 free checked bags each coming to Philippines. But because PAL wants to nickel and dime everyone to death they wanted to charge us so we paid for 4 bags and carried on 2. About a month prior to this we flew from Hawaii to Italy and back booked through KLM and no bags were charged even though WE DID NOT ACTUALLY FLY ON A KLM PLANE! Instead we flew delta, Air France and virgin Atlantic. They all honored the 2 free checked bags when traveling internationally. That wasn't the only time we've flown to Europe a few times as well as Asia and of course all over North America and never experienced this. We will never ever fly with PAL ever again and we will tell our friends and family not to either.to make things worse we had a senior traveling with us who had to stand over an hour at counter before we finished checked in! We could afford to pay $480 for 4 bags but what about people who can't afford it? The fact that they're the only airlines that do this says a lot about them. Next time we're in Philippines we'll use another airline for sure.

Philippines review #21…read more I took a chance when booking my flight to Manila because the price was right, just $579.18 US (P26,970), round trip. Yes it was economy class and yes I had to change planes in Guangzhou, China, but the layover was just over an hour each way, so it worked out well. The plane going there was a Boeing 777-300, which was clean and looked very new. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/china-southern-airlines-manila?select=RtH0uxTSr9ICLDYyfXPdlQ Checking in at LAX was smooth and the counter staff were friendly, etc. I got to the airport early enough that I was able to request and get exit row seats for my flights. You see I'm 6 foot 3 and legroom in economy class is a problem, especially for almost 15 hours. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/china-southern-airlines-manila?select=wmLzpGYAnzJgheU2DcxYMg The first leg of the flight was 30 mins late arriving at LAX, and thus 30 minutes late leaving. As such, we were 30 minutes late arriving in Guangzhou, China and with only a 1hr 10 min layover, I was rightfully concerned. It turns out however, that there were a lot of people on this fight going to Manila, so they held the connecting flight. By time we arrived in Manila we were an hour late. Meal 1: Seafood or chicken and I choose the chicken with rice & veggie, croissant & butter, fruit, yogurt, plus a little white wine. It was actually pretty darn tasty even though it's "airline food" ... or maybe I was just really hungry, LOL. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/china-southern-airlines-manila?select=KARFIgpxK4dkQ_HPAMgNMg Snack: I saw a flight attendant give another passenger a large cup-o-noodles, so I asked and got one too. It hit the spot perfectly! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/china-southern-airlines-manila?select=7i8D43xmCukBh8DtUKuZXQ Meal 2: Breakfast was about 3 hours before landing in China. By time they got to me the American breakfast gone, so the Chinese breakfast (stir fired noodles & veggie, roll & butter, chicken salad with a slice of turkey or chicken(?) and fruit) it was. This was actually fine, but the first meal was better. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/china-southern-airlines-manila?select=9Cy3peHi3LN-ebLpTXjMFQ Return flight: Manila to Guangzhou. On the 1st flight they literally gave us a box lunch. Chicken with rice & veggie, salad, bread, fruit & dried mango chipc. While it hit the spot, it was nothing special. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/china-southern-airlines-manila?select=dgNdXsp82YIB8GD-MMWWSg http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/china-southern-airlines-manila?select=OTllttT4ttPjf09wyf6ifw The next flight, Guangzhou to LA was on an A380 super jumbo plane with 506 passengers, WOW! Comfortable and very quiet. Meal #1 Stir fried beef noodles, veggie, bread, yogurt & fruit. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/china-southern-airlines-manila?select=Ouj4jlXqJdsfkP3NyfIE9A Meal #2 Pepper beef w/ rice, veggie, bread, crackers, seaweed salad & a whipped cream cake. Both of these meals were pretty tasty... or maybe I'm just not that picky. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/china-southern-airlines-manila?select=R-RbSGELQLxfDafaZk6mog OVERALL: While there was a delay on my initial flight, the ground staff and flight attendants were very friendly / nice, the planes were newer, comfortable and the food was better than I was expecting! 3.5 start rounded up.

The staff are ok and do what they can with what they have. Make sure to constantly check on their website for updates on promos, price drops, and other special new destinations locally and abroad. Make sure to always read your booking details and guidelines so as to not have any hassle when you check in or travel (make sure to purchase your correct luggage allocation because they are getting stricter now about overweight luggages). After checking in, we were brought to the lounge which I believe was part of my parents' traveling perks. The lounge was nice and clean, food was pleasant, and the restrooms well kept. For short flights on these smaller planes, you just can't compare them to bigger flights on bigger jet planes. I found the employees to be just fine, especially at the airport level. There were employees sitting right next to the self check kiosk that processed my ticket for me. Don't think that would happen on US soil. Lol. There is an option to purchase snacks or drinks but not many use it for this short of a flight. These smaller planes you usually have to deboard straight on the tarmac going down some steep stairs. Baggage claim is much smaller thus much easier. The airports on the smaller islands are much more mimimal, definitely has that travel adventure spirit to it. The airport in Manila looks like any big city airport, and actually to get to the gate or plane from this airport, you will usually have to take a shuttle to get to another part of the airport. I found it to be pretty straight forward and organized. For bringing me to a much more remote area, even tho not the most comfy, I just gotta give them props on doing that in a professional and more importantly safe manner.

In this case, it was a gentleman named Robert, but the name is almost irrelevant because I have found this to be a consistent pattern across the airline: employees seem unable or unwilling to resolve even basic service issues.
