I had heard how Sleeping Bird Cafe had opened this outlet featuring donuts so I stopped in to see if I could by some without preordering. The menu changes every two weeks but the website did not say where they were in that cycle so I was disappointed that the toffee cream filled donut that I saw on the menu the day before was not available on the next open day. I bought one of each of the remaining donuts as some varieties were sold out. The shop advertises that some of the donuts are made with brioche dough. While eggy like a brioche, I found the dough not sweet enough. The Love Me Nots is a good example, composed of donut holes fried together and glazed and topped with jimmies, it tasted like glazed bread. The rocky road donut was a cake donut that was also composed of a not sweet enough and overly dense chocolate donut with a chocolate glaze and barely taste-able marshmallow drizzle. The chocolate raspberry was just ok One of the two donuts we did like were the Neapolitan because it was topped generously with a vanilla cream, a chocolate drizzle and a strawberry glaze. The toppings were prominent enough to sweeten the bite. The best of the was the mint chocolate chip filled donut which was filled fully and satisfied our sweet tooth. The shop is so cute and has lots of fun rotating flavors! The employee working was very kind and helpful. I got the Boston cream, coconut cream pie, and lemon poppyseed old fashioned donuts. The coconut cream pie was incredible, so fluffy and had a nice coconut flavor that wasn't too overpowering. The lemon poppyseed old fashioned had a good flavor, though I definitely preferred the texture of the yeast donut. Delicious gourmet donuts with a plenty full selection, robust flavors, and a $$$ price. I had the bread pudding and it was mediocre. I need to go back and try an actual donut but my indecisiveness got the best of me. I got a doughnut for each of my kids and they loved it! My advice is to get here as close to the opening time as possible (8AM) because they sell out quickly. This is a hidden gem, and once they sell out of their donuts, they close for the day. Just look at their hours! They are doing all the right things. For example, they have an excellent location with ample parking, a wide selection of flavors without having too many, and they've cornered the market so the price is right for the value! I really do wish they that SB would still have some of the donuts at their original coffee shop or better coffee options here. I got all 9 flavors to try a little of everything. 4 of us ate them and they were all gone within 24 hours. I love how creative the flavors are! There is something for everyone. Okay - came here because my daughter has been raving about this place, so this morning I decided to try it out. People were already waiting for the doors to open. The line went quick and the selection was awesome. The smell alone had me in donut heaven. I tried the Mummy - a brioche donut filled with buttercream. Love the crunch of the donut and plenty of cream in every single bite. I have never had a donut this good in my life. Pricey? Yes. However, it is worth it in my opinion. I tried this place three different times, because the flavor ideas are innovative and I was hoping it was just a bad day for the execution of those ideas on previous visits. Nope. It's no secret I'm a fan of sleeping bird. Literally the best coffee shop in Wilmington. So it's no surprise the donut shop is on par with the coffee shop. The donuts are on point. Are they worth the $4 price tag, debatable. I got the blueberry cheesecake and chocolate buttercream and a brioche ring. All flavors were fantastic. I do wish they up their inventory so that items aren't sold out so quick and they are open past the 10/11 mark and eliminate the lines but I understand it's new and they are still trying to figure things out. Worse than Krispy Kreme on a bad day Today I stood in line from 7:35 am to 8:06 am to purchase 6 donuts. I was hoping from the long line the donuts would be hot, fresh, and delicious. The donuts were not hot, fresh, or delicious. The brioche donuts are heavy and bread like as if they don't know to add enough eggs to the batter to get the proper consistency. The maple glaze old fashioned donuts tasted so bad they were inedible. They tasted heavy and like the dough was stored with vegetables and there was an off flavor. The frosting of the brown butter brioche ring tasted ok but the donut part was so bready and heavy instead of light that it wasn't good. The filling in the South of Boston donut tastes goopy and like they've never tasted a filled donut or have an understanding of what that should be like. The cinnamon brown sugar brioche ring had many fewer toppings on it than the advertised picture on Facebook which is pretty chintzy. I found the topping to be overly sweet and again the brioche was heavy and bread like. The s'more brioche was divisive. My Mom liked it and finished it after I took one bite and refused to eat any more. I wanted to like this place because it's local and a small business. Unfortunately I think they don't know how to bake and the donuts certainly weren't fresh. I also don't think much of people who don't provide a public restroom. I will also note the register asks for a tip which is absurd for putting some donuts in a box and ringing them up. This was a one time stop for me. I hope north Wilmington one day gets a decent donut shop and or a bakery. This is a small owned business, every donut is handmade and they're doing an incredible job. The staff is friendly, the place is clean and inviting.
