I've known the Phatso's name and their reputation for years. But today was my first time there. And I'll cut right to it. I have now sampled the button holes, the glazed and jelly donuts, and some of the sweet potato pie. Why the hell did I wait this long? I'll just give you my exact quote while tasting the button hole for the first time in their shop: "MMMMM... to hell with Krispy Kreme!" And my wife's exact words when i brought them home... "We are never going to Dunkin Donuts again!" My favorite donuts in the Philly area in recent years have been Beiler's in Reading Terminal. These are right there with them. I'm calling it a tie overall. But the glazed donuts might be better than anything Beiler's has if that makes sense. They make Krispy Kreme look like a two day old Wawa donut. Lawd have mercy! Get there early and don't expect them to have everything you want. They're small and they get sold out fast. But get whatever you can when you're there and just love it. As I was writing this I also took a bite of the Boston Cream donut. My wife and I agree. It's not too sweet which is actually perfect. They seem to know just how much sweetness works here. This is a hidden gem. The donuts are so fresh and good! The woman behind the counter was so nice, and everything was done with care. From how she placed the donuts in the box, added tissues and napkins, to how she made a little tab with the tape for easy removal for when you opened the box. So thoughtful! We got glazed, a Boston cream, sprinkles, and a sweet potato cinnamon swirl, and the BEST apple fritters. There is a whole case of half priced day old donuts that looked really good as well. And when I had mentioned that I had wanted to try this place for a long time she said, "Hold up, this is your first time? All first time customers get a free treat!". You get to pick a free treat from a case that has muffins, danishes, and cookies. We got a blueberry muffin, and it was so good!! This place may not always be open according to the hours posted on their sign, but it definitely needs more love and support. I love having this mom and pop donut shop near me! read more

I don't generally eat sweets, but I find myself drawn to this place! The Cheese Danish is AMAZING! The cheese is freshly whipped and fluffy, as close to heaven as you can get! Oh, and the service... I am always greeted with a warm smile and QUICK service! They open early, but keep in mind that they close when they sell out... so I would not suggest going after noon (and that's pushing it)! I saw in earlier posts people questioning why don't they make more to sustain during the day... my thoughts are - what if they don't sell? I work down the street and order doughnuts from here about once a month for my coworkers. I'm not a fan of sweets but you can smell them baking each morning so it is impossible to resist every day! I get an assortment of doughnuts and even had a cake from there once. Everything was fresh and delicious. The employees are always extremely helpful and friendly. This is the epitome of an amazing small business. Their prices are extremely reasonable and one time I went in to buy a doughnut and coffee for a homeless man down the street and they gave it to me for free for him anyway. UPDATE!!! I did get the carrot cake I longed for in my first review. I ordered a couple dozen for a coworker's birthday a few weeks ago, and they were amazing. All fresh everything. Their donuts are perfect. My faves are the glazed lemon filled and the apple fritters. Next up, cheesecake! I mentioned it to Rick on my last visit, and he just happened to have a sample, which I tried and it was perfect. Nice and smooth... thick... hefty... just the way it's supposed to be. This is absolutely my go-to bakery, and at least half a dozen people have asked me for the contact information so they could place an order over the past few months. The donuts are amazing! I had some when a coworker brought some in. 5 stars! I talked them up so much that my husband was excited to try them. He went over on Halloween morning for a treat! Sadly, although the lights were on, the doors were locked and no one answered and he had to leave disappointed and without a donut. Stopped in late morning yesterday at Phatso's Bakery on Welsh St in Chester. Warm welcome as soon as we walked in the door. Most locals seem to love this place. I've been there twice by 8 am and the place was sold out, so from a business perspective I'm not sure what their plan is bc there is literally nothing on the shelves at that point, to invite people into the store. But that being said, the donuts I've had there were really good. Covered in glaze so that helps. They've just been doing it this way forever and they'll just continue with . I did have a cupcake and have to say that the icing was a little chemically tasting, so not certain what ingredients are used. read more

I've been to phatso's no 3 times. The hours on their door are not accurate. I've never eaten anything from them because I've showed up when they "open" and no one is there. Today I got there 30 minutes after their advertised opening hours and the place was dark. Not a soul to be found. Very unfortunate that I can no longer use their services. I thoroughly enjoy their cakes but I ordered cake for my birthday in June. The only thing i wanted was their cakes. I ordered them and I was told they'll be done by 1230. Unfortunately I've had car trouble so I called and asked if they could wait or not. He said yea 1:30 . I arrived at 1:29 to find the building closed and locked. As a person that works in a service industry , where i too have to wait and constantly recieve calls on lateness. I always sacrifice my time to stay loyal to my customers . I found that obnoxious. Needless to say I had a cake less birthday. With no explanation on why. I.would've paid for that extra half hour wait if need be. The year before in April I ordered a cake for my daughter arrived at 1230 as instructed and waited almost an hour bc it was not done yet.
