So many famous people buried here. When you arrive there's a map of the area to help you navigate. Once I got close to some famous grave sites I just followed the crowd. Authors Ridge. The graves of Alcott. Hawthorn. Emerson. Thoreau. It's actually a pretty big Cemetery. Decent signage leading you to Authors Ridge. Even a small parking area near the ridge that could hold 3 or 4 cars. It was a pleasant walk around on a beautiful spring day. Why did I dock a star? The trash. Why do people think it's ok to litter on gravestones? You seriously think HDT is in need of a pencil? No. He isn't. So it's called littering. read more

Fellow taphophiles rejoice! Sleepy Hollow is everything I hoped for in a New England cemetery with a cool name. There is history at every turn from the Concord grape guy's grave to author's ridge where one can leave a pen or other writing utensil on the grave of their favorite transcendentalist. There is little more I take pleasure in than strolling old cemeteries and reading the epitaphs and admiring the art. Sleepy Hollow did not disappoint in either regard. If you or anyone you know is a bibliophile, you need to pay a visit to Sleepy Hollow. Here you will find Authors Ridge and the graves of several luminary American authors: Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathanial Hawthorne and my favorite, Henry David Thoreau. I took my wife (she's a writer) here as a surprise outing and she was very moved. If you have kids, and they have seen any of the Sleepy Hollow movies like the old cartoon from Walt (informer) Disney then they will get a kick out of actually visiting a cemetery named Sleepy Hollow. I recommend a visit on a drizzly October day. We visited on such a day and left feeling inspired by these authors whose works continue like a river through time, influencing generations. read more

Certainly most of the visitors come to this cemetery attracted by the famous authors who died while living in Concord. The hill where their graves stand is called "Author's Ridge" and probably is the most busy part of Sleepy Hollow. My advice is take your time to walk throughout the cemetery (the hilly parts will give you a nice view of the whole area). I dare say that even during an uncharacteristically warm winter day, with a lot of mud from the snow that have melted, the walk was very pleasant and peaceful. read more

Luckily, I live close enough to Concord that I can scoot over there on a whim. If the weather is nice and has that certain "New England" feel to it (you might know what I'm talking about) I head over to Concord and, when I do, I just have to pay a visit to Sleepy Hollow. Authors Ridge, as its called, is the final resting place of the Hawthornes, Thoreaus, Alcotts, and Emersons. Lesser-known is the poet Ellery Channing, a good friend of H. D. Thoreau, who is just behind the Hawthorne plot. Off the ridge is Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, sister of Hawthorne's wife Sophia, who was also a Transcendentalist credited with bringing Kindergarten to the United States. You might also find the inventor of the Concord grape, Ephraim Wales Bull. There's also a great memorial sculpture by Daniel Chester French (who also designed the Lincoln Memorial in D.C.) - and he's buried there too, just a quick walk from Authors Ridge. Historians might also like to find Franklin Benjamin Sanborn, one of the infamous "Secret Six" who financed abolitionist John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry. The cemetery itself is a good mix of old-time New England (the stereotypical curved headstone look with the cartoony skull at the top) and Victorian New England (more elaborate or marble show-pieces). It's sort of divided in half naturally and, other than Authors Ridge, the cemetery is usually very quiet. One could easily meander or wander at their own pace for a spiritual or contemplative solo experience. Though, I have to admit, no matter what time I go, whatever the season, it's nice to know that someone else has already left a token for Hawthorne, Thoreau, Alcott, or Emerson. This will be about Author's Ridge and not the whole cemetery. For all the book worms out there, this is a gem! The place is not hard to find although we did miss the entrance to the cemetery itself because only one gate was open, however, once you're inside there are signs that point everywhere to tell you where to go to find Authors Ridge! The place has that beautiful nostalgic feel that only comes with time passing, it's simply awesome! came here in the WINTER and close to SUNSET and the lighting made everything beautiful and serene. There's a very clearly marked path for where to go, but there are no steps, so it can get slippery in the snow (watch out!) but all the graves are clearly marked so you know exactly who you're looking at. Since these are family graves, there is a bit of searching sometimes to find the author themselves and not their extended family members, but even that is quite fun. If you love literature or had a special connection to any of these people when you were in school, this is a must to visit! read more

Unless you have relatives buried here then you are probably coming here to visit the graves of four famous authors (Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott, and Ralph Waldo Emerson). All four of them are buried in the same section of the cemetery up on a steep hill known as "Author's Ridge". This cemetery gets five stars for having stairs built in to climb said steep hill as well as having several very blunt signs directing you to Author's Ridge in this fairly large cemetery. Once you get to the top of Author's Ridge just look for the graves with the large piles of pens and pencils that have been placed on them and those will be the graves of the authors. Most people know about the four authors buried here but I'm sure there are many other famous historical figures buried here as well. Do your research before you visit. read more

I love old graveyards. Seeing the art on the old headstones and reading the old dates is fascinating. I'd never been to Sleepy Hollow and on a fall feeling day last week decided it was time for a visit. The graveyard is huge. If you're looking for the author graves they're up along Thoreau on the right side of the cemetery. They're chained off but everyone ignores that as each grave had a little memorial with pens and other items. You can see Hawthorne, Alcott, Thoreau and Emerson. Thoreau's grave was my favorite - a beautiful rock. There are graves from varying ages all around the cemetery. I would rank this second to the old graveyard in Plymouth in terms of interesting headstones but there were some great designs to be seen. There's a path that leads to a trail around a pond which is also nice to walk. read more

Fun place to visit for the literary lover in your life. Several great American authors are buried here, and they are pretty close together! Also check out the famous civil war memorial statue. It was made by the same guy who did the Lincoln memorial in DC and the statue at the Revolutionary battle sight in Concord. read more

I'm actually reviewing a cemetary. This is an old one - lots of famous authors are buried here. My favorite one is Louisa May Aclott, of Little Women fame. Her whole family is buried here, and we had a nice time walking around and paying our respects to different famous authors, etc. It's a hilly place so walking is a bit of a chore but it's still a nice way to kill an hour after having visited the home of the Alcotts! read more

As others have noted, Author's Ridge is wonderful and well worth a visit. It's actually amazing how understated the graves are in the sense that their stature means so much more to us now than their graves reflect. Also, it wasn't particularly crowded when we went, but I suppose it is the middle of fall so much less touristy in general. I would recommend walking around the cemetery. In particular, check out the swampy hollow located behind Author's Ridge (behind the Hawthornes' graves if you're looking at them). There is a path to the left of Author's Ridge that takes you by it. When we went, it had a distinctly other-worldly feel to it. I don't know if this is the hollow the cemetery is named after since the entire site seems shaped around a smaller hollow. read more

If you're an American Literature fanatic, what better place to go to be among the giants than Sleepy Hollow Cemetery? I was beside myself when visiting Author's Ridge! The gravestones are aged and mostly nondescript. Mere rocks in some cases. Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and Louisa May Alcott! What was in the water at Concord? The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery was difficult to find. We asked many people while we were walking, and many were tourists looking for the same thing. We finally found it, and you really have to pay attention to find Authors Row. However, when you do find it (a long walk up a big hill) it was worth the find. The graves were marked and you could definitely see that they are visited frequently. It is a peaceful, beautiful cemetery and you can feel the history there. Don't give up when visiting to find this gem....it is worth the trip! read more

I grew up in Conn. and had family in Concord, Mass, so I went to Sleepy Hollow many times. Not only to visit Authors Ridge, but to visit the graves of family members we have lost. The cemetery is a historical because of the author's buried there, but it is also a place to walk and feel the history. I don't find it at all morbid or creepy, I find it a beautiful final resting place. You can visit the town hall In Concord and if you know the name of a family member you think is buried there, they can look it up and tell you how to find them. I now live in Arizona, but have been back to the cemetery often and plan on visiting again when I return to New England. read more
