NOW THAT PINE HILL CEMETERY has been expanded and upgraded for the City of Quincy! By making major upgrades this location is truly a wonderful and beautifully designed resting place for All! I'm so impressed that the City has truly done an amazing undertaking to have everyone who now visits here, a place of remembrance and beauty that the final resting place of their loved ones will be honored for generations to come! It has always been well manicured and maintained! So, excited to see what other improvements will follow! The location is perfect with its border touching THE BLUE HILLS RESERVATION! One can find wild turkeys wondering around and deer along with majestic birds of prey and other wild life! The relatives of the departed have taken great pride in maintaining the grave sites with beautiful plants, flowers and shrubs! It's truly a wonderful place to walk around and see all the headstones that are truly monumental! Location has several easy accessibility from highways to major streets! Enjoy the granite stones and pillars and curbs that makes Quincy the Capital of Granite! The expansion is on going and it will make a wonderful and beneficial addition to the City of Quincy! You definitely have to give credit to Quincy City Mayor Koch!, plus all the Cities Departments that make PINE HILL CEMETERY TO BE HONORED!

Such a neat (and very historically significant!) burying ground - very unexpected find! It holds…read morethe grave site of the Chief Justice during the Salem Witch Trials, Judge William Stoughton, and is in the middle of an insanely busy intersection in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. It's a fairly small burying ground but nice to walk around. There are so many ancient headstones here - I even found one from 1688!! Very much worth a visit if you're at all into history or the Salem Witch Trials or even just aesthetically pleasing cemeteries. The gate is always kept locked due to the very busy urban location. You have to call the Mount Auburn Cemetery in advance to schedule a time to visit at 617-635-7361. They'll give you the code to the lock. I took Boston's excellent public transportation to get here so I can't speak to the parking situation- but it looked to be difficult - mostly street parking in the area and limited spaces. But it was easy to get here on public transport from Boston's main core - one train, no transfers and then a bus and there's a stop right out front.

There are approximately 2,345 gravestones and tombs, and it is estimated that over 5,000 people are buried there. There are many noteworthy people buried at the Granary Burying Ground including Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Robert Treat Paine, who signed the Declaration of Independence; Paul Revere; John Phillips, the first mayor of Boston; the five victims of the Boston Massacre; and Benjamin Franklin's parents, whose tomb is commemorated by a 25 foot obelisk. There is also the grave of Mary Goose, a woman who was incorrectly thought to be Mother Goose of nursery rhyme fame. The Granary Burying Ground was a beautiful cemetery and we enjoyed walking around, looking at the interesting grave markers. While entrance to the cemetery is free, at one of the entrances is a man handing out sturdy booklets he made with a map of the cemetery and information on the notable burials that you return after your visit, and inside the cover of the booklet is a pocket where you can leave a donation, which I thought was ingenious -- he is providing a service (information about the cemetery) for free, there is no pressure to donate, and he probably makes a tidy little sum from donations -- I was certainly happy to leave a couple of dollars. It's a very cool and ominous spot. I love the old gravestones and trees. It's easily a walking distance from downtown and the main attractions. The day we went, it was packed. It's best to go early morning or late afternoon or even off season. Overall, a spot worth a visit if you love the spooky and historic aspect.

I don't know if it was part of a tour or an employee. The cemetery had an area right outside the entrance that had memorial benches. People leave things on those benches sometimes. It's like a big square with a path. It overlooks the cemetery, so even if the cemetery is closed, you can still see it.

It also has a nice little gazebo to sit in to take in the wonderful view of the coast.

It is definitely the prettiest, greenest, most walk worthy cemetery I've ever seen! We stopped by the visitor center where a staff recommended a particular way to walk to the Washington tower in the middle and to see Isabella Gardner's grave by Auburn lake. We appreciated the windy, cloudy day with glimpses of sun for our adventure today. Several tombstones were guarded by statues of a favorite family dog. Many were clearly family plots. We climbed up the many winding stairs of the Washington tower for a breathtaking 360 degree panoramic view of Boston and of the greenery below. We'll be back! We only spent an hour here today but could've easily stayed 2-3 just exploring. Highly recommend!

(I walked from campus in 20 minutes.) When you walk in, pop into the main building to use hr restroom and pick up maps of the cemetery. You'll learn the cemetery is the first one in the country intentionally designed as a garden/arboretum too. The map will guide you to monuments and memorials and notable burial sites to abolitionists like Charles Sumner and poets like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. If it's open in the warmer months, climb the Washington Monument for a view of the city. It's closed during the winter, but the hill it's on still offers unobstructed views.
