When I walk into Bruno's, I see a clean and organized deli/butcher, with knowledgeable staff and skilled butchers. Bruno's has an open concept, so you can actually look through a window and watch them chop up your meat. When I walk in, I also see dry-aged prime rib in a special dry-aging compartment. Once I asked about the price, and the reply was, "Do you REALLY want to know??" Ok, fair enough, I was wearing my everyday clothes and probably looked like I couldn't even afford a sausage. I'll get my husband to go in there, on his way home from work, and see if he can buy a single rib Dry Aged Prime Rib for me to prepare for a Mother's Day gift. Meanwhile, I bought something more economical ....but still kind of luxe. I bought an entire striploin on sale. The price was actually only $1 more than No Frills, and I got 12 steaks!! That will certainly last us a while. After laying 3 aside for our evening meal, I tossed the rest in the freezer. That steak is so great, just butter-basted in a skillet with your favourite aromatics. Despite my above anecdote, Bruno's is not a stuck-up or snobby place at all, but just your neighbourhood butcher. And, if you keep an eye on their specials, it is not to pricey at all. However, you can spend a fortune if you aren't aware of reasonable pricing. As grocery store food prices soar upward, Bruno's prices seem to remain relatively static, in a good way, so that it is worth my money to check it out, especially when they have deals or sales. To go with, I grabbed a peppers, olives and feta salad in a tub, and for dessert, a raisin butter tart. Even though the sammies are not over-priced, if you combine all that, it adds up to a few bucks. The sandwich was excellent! After reading the reviews, I expected a little more of the smoke meat piled high, but instead it had more of a reasonable amount. But omg, the bread stole the show! When I first perused the aisles, I noticed they carry Fred's bread, which I believe Healthy Butcher also sells. If you look at my photo, the bread slices look typical of any brand of mass-produced whole-wheat bread, nothing special. But the taste jumped out at me and over-powered the heavy sweetness of the meat and the tangy sourness of the mustard. Combined together it was heavenly. The salad was ok, can't go wrong with something basic like that and the butter tart was a perfect way to top off my lunch. Actually since I wasn't overly hungry that day I only ate half leaving the other half for later, which made me venture out for a slice, but hey, that's part of living downtown, it's just that convenient to stuff yourself.

I called ahead to Pavao and asked if they had a 6-8lbs brisket cut available. Rodrigo, that gem, not only had one, he put it aside and told me to ask my husband to ask for him by name. When the call was made a very mean grumpy miserable old man had answered the phone and in a very angry voice said "this is the meat department ! You should be calling the main store line !" I told him this was the main number on the website that given. If this is not the number can you transfer me? He said " NO !" With that the man hung up on me. Let's be honest, the supermarket meat section has been a source of profound disappointment for me…read morelately. So, on a quest for a better protein experience, I did a search for local butchers after my Saturday Tai Chi class in Parkdale. Nothing like finding your center and then immediately seeking out a center-cut pork chop. This shop was a short, pleasant walk away and I was immediately impressed by the selection. I left with an armful of goodies: steaks, whole chicken legs, pork, and even some local eggs and house-made bone broth. I also had the pleasure of trying their house-made pork and beef sausages, both of which were fantastic. These are definitely on the list for the next time I have guests over. The service was quick, the attendant got me sorted out efficiently, and the prices were noticeably better than what I'm used to paying in midtown. It's conveniently located right on the 501 streetcar line on Queen St. West. While my hunt for a go-to butcher closer to home continues, I would absolutely come back here anytime I'm in the neighborhood.
