very much a shotgun style laundromat, plenty of machines, just a narrow space, though the mirrors make the space appear larger. imo it's cozy. restrooms are available, as are detergents, softeners and soaps. there's a vending machine, which only takes cash; i believe the same goes for the quarter machine. laundry carts (complimentary) and bags (for purchase) are available as well. clean joint ! and it's conveniently located near the D24 & C53 bus lines. there's also a table with chairs for sitting and benches outside. last wash is 8:30pm ! speed queens are $3.25 for 24 mins there are two large washers that charge $6 and three x-large washers that charge $9 Dryers a huge and plentiful, charging 25¢ for 10mins. I did two loads in the wash and was able to fit both loads into one dryer. I spent $7.25 in total. was a really great experience and i'll definitely be returning soon read more

By this conversation you know this is a laundry family, the place to be if you need a laundromat. There is a guy here that is probably somebody's grandpa (does he have butterscotch in his pocket?) that was the attendant. He mopped up quickly, he told me it was going to take no less than 30 minutes of drying on low (very true). He was running the place efficiently. It was clean, 90% operable and in a good neighborhood. Although small and they don't take credit cards I will come back if my "Honey Do List" takes me worldwide and back to DC. read more

We were visiting for ten days and needed to do a mid-stay laundry run and hotel prices are a grift. Found this place on the morning of MLK Day and very happy we did. The machines are newer and most work well, cheaper than the same ones back home, the entire laundromat is clean and well-lit. The attendant was very kind and helpful, even giving us directions to a coffee place nearby. 100% would recommend and definitely come again if the need arises. read more

Clean facility and friendly staff. It's a narrow building and they use mirrors to make it feel a lot bigger than it is. I still had a space to sit down and use my laptop while my clothes were in both the washer and dryer. There was a place for me to plug in and the table and chairs were clean. The attendant was very helpful and the washers were in good condition. Pretty straightforward it didn't feel run down or dirty. Thank goodness for Slow Nickel! We needed to do a few loads of laundry while visiting DC and this is one of very few laundromats in the city. Wound up taking a ride-share there and back. The premises are clean, the attendant is very helpful. There is a change machine, vending machine if you need detergent and softener. There's a convenience store across the street. It's clean. Manager present to help. He is friendly, provides help patiently, cheerfully. He will clean at least once while you're there. Machines usually in good repair. Driers are big. They dry in reasonably short order (16+ minutes). 25 cents for four minutes. (Driers are in two rows, top and bottom. Pay attention where you put your quarters (look at the arrows) you might pay for extra drying time for a fellow customer.)​ They have super large washers: $9 a load and regular washers: $6 load. TV to watch while waiting - or two benches outside in good weather. They have a restroom - immaculately clean, attendant has the key. Bus stop immediately across the street - nearly always room for parking, though most customers start their wash and return in 22 minutes Change maker on wall returns quarters for 5, $10, and $20 currency. Slow Nickel Laundromat is the best laundromat on Capitol Hill. Here's why: 1) Location: It's centrally located between Lincoln Park and H Street NE. Across the street is a small corner store where you can buy munchies and snacks. 2) Amenities: All you need to bring is cash. They have two machines that exchange cash ($1, $5, $10, and $20 bills) for quarters. They have a vending machine with drinks and snacks as well as a vending machine with detergent and dryer sheets. They have industrial washes for $9 a load and smaller washers for $3.25 a load. For dryers, they have big ones and small for 25 cents for 4 minutes. There are TVs playing or you can sit in one of the seats and read a book as you wait. 3) Service: The men who run it are so kind and fun to chat with. 4) Safety: It's safe as the men who run it keep an eye out for everyone. I was in pinch to get my clothes done before visiting a friend. So I searched for a laundromat that had great reviews and convenient to Union Station. This place is convenient to Union Station, has clean machines, and a CLEAN establishment! I was able to get off Amtrak, get to Slow Nickel , which is less than 2 miles away, wash and dry my clothes in an hour, and head to my next destination. Grateful! read more

I sat on this review for a while, hoping I'd soften. But the reality is the attendant's surliness is inexplicable, undeserved, disappointing, and on a personal note, one more overtly negative experience in the district for the depressing day, and the weather was nice. Realizing the time was short, I threw my loads in. I was out of practice so I had an airhead question. At first, grimly but then kinder he answered Then urgent (bathroom need) made me rush home and back. I had told him the reason and plan. I didn't make it time. But god forbid i risk the wrath of The ATTENDANT, I went back soiled in plenty of time. But the light was still OFF, HE was packing up, and grumbling at me with undeserved sense of accomplishment that winter...err closing time was coming. No sh*t!! Well I couldn't say that either. Lol Dude, I'm not your enemy. I'm sure some customers are rude to you. I wasn't. Not at all. We're on the same side. I had yet another.sh*tty depressing day. For some asinine reason this place still requires you to wear a mask inside the place. As of 5/23/2023 this is still a requirement. Not really sure what they are hoping to accomplish but they won't allow you to use their services without one. Otherwise washer and dryers work but are somewhat expensive. read more

I take issues with most laundromat. While I don't begrudge anyone making money, $6 for a medium load seems like a tax on poor people. Most folks don't have the space or capital to invest in washer/dryer, especially in rental property, so many folks have to go to laundromat and it gets really expensive. With that said, Slow Nickel is solid for a laundromat. It's not terribly large, but that's an asset. It's tucked between Capitol Hill and Kingman Park, which isn't a high traffic area. They have small, medium, and large machines along with the basic immensities (change machine, vending machines, soap dispenser, etc). And the staff person there was really helpful and friendly (which I don't generally see in DC customer service). They also seemed to be fairly COVID-consious with hand santizer, requiring masks, and regularly wiping down machines. Although the price for the medium and large machines was a bit pricey, I would definitely go back. read more

Thankfully I found this location on my Maps. Was out of town and needed to do just 1 load of laundry. I brought my own detergent and dryer sheet. They had plenty of washers ($3.50 for the smaller size) and dryers (.25 cents for 4 minutes I think). I only needed ~24 minutes in the dryer and was good! There's a vending machine and a few places to sit to read (or whatever you want to do to pass the time). Also there are two machines for quarters and a machine for detergent, etc. Would return if needed! read more

So clean and great service! I almost used a dryer that was out and the attendant was so helpful to me. I also brought my laptop to do some work while my laundry was on. I've chosen not to relive my experience earlier today, BUT see my attached screenshots from my google review. The machines I used were #17 and the one directly in front of the change machines. We were in DC and due to the weather we had to stay another night. We found this laundromat close to our hotel and took a cab on an early Sunday morning. The attendant was nice, friendly and the place was very clean. You will need a face mask to enter and if you don't have one, the attendant will provide one. I would definitely recommend. read more

The service and sanitation of the establishment is GREAT! I rarely have to worry about waiting for a washer/dryer because they offer so many. It's never crowded with customers and the staff is so helpful and friendly. Unfortunately, their dryers are the issue at hand for this low rating. For the best 5-6 months, I have noticed a lingering smell in my clothes after using their dryers. I never notice when I take my clothes out of their washers. I believe the vents of their dryers need to be replaced. The smell has become so bad that rewashing my clothes does not help. Hopefully this review will get their attention if no one else has said anything. read more

The smaller dryers are only $.25 but i ended up having to run it 4 times (costing me $1) & my clothes still weren't completely dry. My washing machine has been broken for about a month and a half now, and the new one arrives next Monday. While there's a sense of relief in that, I also have to admit that I'm going to miss Slow Nickel. Located in a residential neighborhood in Capitol Hill, this feels like everything a laundromat should be: small, clean, well-maintained, friendly. There's also a lovely little outdoor seating area, which is great, since Slow Nickel is strategically located between the Pretzel Bakery and The Wydown. An ideal routine would be to pick up some coffee and a treat to enjoy outside while you wait for your clothes to wash and dry. I usually bring a copy of New York Magazine to read, but the last time I was here, I listened to PDQ Bach's "Iphigenia in Brooklyn," and laughed 'til I cried, much to the enjoyment of all of the friendly patrons A small washer is $3.25 and a dryer is 25 cents per 6 minutes. I have no idea what the going rate is in D.C., so this might be pricey. The washing machines and dryers have gentle/delicate settings, which I really appreciate. There's a change machine, but if you need cash, the 7 River Mart across the street has an ATM--and a solid wine collection, btw! All in all, this place makes me feel connected to D.C. Had a good experience here. We were in town for 2 weeks and our AirBNB didn't have a W/D. We arrived around noon on a Saturday and there were plenty of open 2hr parking spots right out front. It was steadily busy, and a lot of people seemed to know each other from the neighborhood but no one had to wait for a machine. The two regular sized washers we used were $3.25/load. There was a working change machine that would change $1/$5/$10/$20 bills. We had soap with us but forgot dryer sheets. The machine on the wall had boxes of 2 dryer sheets for $1. We threw both loads in the smallest dryer together (which was quite large). Each quarter got us 6 min of dry time. We started with $1.50 (36 minutes) and it was enough to dry everything. Only the last 2 minutes was cool down cycle, which I appreciated. Only a couple of items were still very slightly damp at the waist, and they air dried just fine overnight. Even forgetting dryer sheets, I was impressed to get out of a laundromat for under $10. A movie was on the televisions to keep us occupied, and there some chairs near the entrance to sit. There was a bench under the awning right outside to get out of the warm building, take a break from your mask and keep out of the rain. The manager/owner unlocked the bathroom for our use while we waited for our laundry. It was clean and I really appreciated having available facilities. Local COVID restrictions were just starting to lift, but everyone was courteous and did their best to keep distance and remained masked inside. We were in-and-out in about 75 minutes. read more

I would have given a higher rating, but the attendant was extremely rude. I don't know his name, but he was an older African American man, with salt and pepper hair and beard. I called ahead to double check what time they closed and he told me that last wash was at 8:15 and the doors locked at 8:30. Upon arrival at 7:47, he griped and said they were closed. He even said that I had too many clothes and estimated what time he thought I would be done. After all of that, he did allow me to wash, but complained and watched me the entire time. I've patronized this business before, but this experience will make me think twice before coming back. read more
